    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Athlon college football magazine's six coaches on hot seat this year:

    6) Kevin Wilson, Indiana-- Four years, no bowls=no job security

    5) Ron Caragher, San Jose State-- Mike MacIntyre was tough act to follow.

    4) Al Golden, Miami-- 16-16 in ACC games; the natives are restless.

    3) Norm Chow, Hawai'i-- 4-9 last year was actually a big improvement.

    2) Tim Beckman, Illinois-- This was before abuse allegations surfaced.

    1) Mike London, Virginia-- 11-29 in ACC games; that not good.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week thoughts.......

    13) Cavaliers 118, Hawks 88-- Atlanta had a terrific season, but 4-0 sweep in this series leaves a sour taste.

    12) Cleveland was 97-215 in the four years Lebron James played for the Heat; now they're in the NBA Finals again. Who is the MVP?

    11) My all-time NBA team: Magic-Jordan-Lebron-Russell-Kareem.

    10) Rangers 7, Lightning 3-- 27 goals were scored in three games in Tampa in this series- Game 7 in Friday night in Manhattan.

    9) Adrian Gonzalez got his 1,000th RBI last night; why did the Padres ever get rid of him? Boston traded him so they could shed the hideous contracts of Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett. San Diego has no such excuses.

    8) Broadcaster Kenny Albert has had two separate 11-day stretches since April 1 when he called a baseball or hockey game every day. The man works hard.

    7) Pablo Sandoval was 3-42 vs lefty pitchers, so the switch-hitter batted lefty against Glen Perkins in 8th inning last night and got an infield hit.

    6) Josh Donaldson had four hits, two HRs, one of which was a walk-off, scored five runs, knocked in four as Toronto beat the White Sox 10-9. He is the first player in at least 100 years to do all that in the same game.

    5) Meanwhile the A's lost 1-0 to a lefty pitcher in Oakland; they make movies about GMs, but great players are the ones who win games. A's are 1-10 when a lefty starter goes against them, after they traded Cespedes/Donaldson.

    4) Hanley Ramirez has one RBI in May; today is May 27th. Oy.

    3) Miami Marlins are incredibly dysfunctional; now come reports that the new bench coach and third base coach Brett Butler are at odds, after Butler lost his 3rd base coaching job and was demoted to outfield coach.

    2) Kenny Payne is Kentucky's #1 basketball recruiter; he makes $700K a year, more than 22 of the 68 head coaches in this year's NCAA tournament.

    1) When Michael Jordan retired from the Bulls, he had played 35,887 regular season minutes; right now, Lebron James has played 35,769.

          MLB roundup: Four walk-off wins

CINCINNATI -- Skip Schumaker's pinch-hit double drove home Marlon Byrd with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies on a rainy Tuesday night at Great American Ball Park.

The win ended the Reds' nine-game losing streak, their longest since 1998.

Chris Rusin was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to replace scheduled Reds starter Jorge De La Rosa, who was scratched due to a cut on his left middle finger. Rusin, 28, delivered a bullpen-saving performance, allowing just one run and four hits in seven innings. He walked four and fanned five.

Catcher Nick Hundley homered and collected two of the Rockies' four hits.

          Mets 5, Phillies 4 (10 innings)

NEW YORK -- Wilmer Flores tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and won it with an RBI single with two outs in the 10th as New York edged Philadelphia.

Juan Lagares led off the 10th by singling against right-hander Jeanmar Gomez (0-1). Left-hander Elvis Araujo then walked Lucas Duda before Daniel Murphy hit into a double play. Michael Cuddyer drew a walk before Flores laced the first pitch he saw for a single over leaping shortstop Freddy Galvis.

Jeurys Familia (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings.

Blue Jays 10, White Sox 9

TORONTO -- Josh Donaldson hit two home runs, including a three-run shot in the bottom of the ninth, leading Toronto past Chicago.

The game-winning blast against David Robertson (3-1) was Donaldson's fifth career walk-off homer and his second this season.

Jose Bautista drove in five runs with three doubles for the Blue Jays, who won their third in a row. Jose Abreu drove in four runs, three with a home run, for the White Sox, who lost their fourth in a row.

          Cubs 3, Nationals 2

CHICAGO -- Addison Russell's walk-off RBI double scored Jonathan Herrera from second base, lifting Chicago to a victory over Washington.

Russell's two-out hit to deep center snapped a 2-2 tie and ended a two-game Cubs losing skid. Hector Rondon (3-0) worked a scoreless ninth for the victory.

Washington's Denard Span collected his second home run in two days to snap a 1-1 tie with two out in the eighth inning.

          Astros 4, Orioles 1

BALTIMORE -- Jason Castro gave Houston the lead for good with a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning, and Luis Valbeuna added a two-run single in the eighth as the Astros rallied late to beat Baltimore.

The Orioles broke a scoreless tie in the sixth on Chris Davis' sacrifice fly. The Astros answered with two runs in the seventh. Chris Carter tied the game with a two-out single to left, and Castro followed with a double to deep right-center. The Astros added two more in the eighth when Valbuena lined a two-run single to right.

Astros starter Scott Feldman (4-4) gave up one run on four hits in six innings, wriggling out of trouble a few times against his former team.

          Yankees 5, Royals 1

NEW YORK -- Adam Warren pitched effectively into the seventh inning, and he combined with three relievers on a four-hitter as New York defeated Kansas City.

Warren (3-3) made it to the seventh for the third straight start, allowing one run and two hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five without a walk and threw 62 of 88 pitches for strikes.

Mark Teixeira drove in four runs, hitting a two-run home run in the first inning off Jason Vargas (3-2) and a two-run double off Joe Blanton in the fifth.

          Pirates 5, Marlins 1

PITTSBURGH -- Jeff Locke held the Marlins scoreless into the sixth inning, and each starter in the Pittsburgh lineup reached base as the Pirates beat Miami.

Locke (3-2) gave up four hits and four walks in 5 2/3 shutout innings. He struck out six.

Pittsburgh scored all five of its runs with two outs, finishing 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The Pirates rapped 10 hits and left only five men on base.

          Cardinals 6, Diamondbacks 4

ST. LOUIS -- Jaime Garcia shrugged off a shaky start to work through six innings and grab the victory as St. Louis beat Arizona.

Garcia (1-1) allowed eight hits and four runs, three earned, over six innings. He walked none and fanned five. Seth Maness, closing with Trevor Rosenthal unavailable after pitching two innings Monday, retired Yasmany Tomas on a grounder with the tying runs in scoring position for his third save.

St. Louis' Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run double, and Randal Grichuk added a solo homer and an RBI single.

          Mariners 7, Rays 6 (10 innings)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- After propelling Seattle back into the lead with an eighth-inning grand slam, Kyle Seager finished off Tampa Bay in the 10th with a solo homer off closer Brad Boxberger.

Mariners left-hander Joe Beimel pitched a perfect 10th to secure the win and hand the Rays their fourth consecutive setback.

Tampa Bay tied the game with three runs off Mariners closer Fernando Rodney in the ninth, the last scoring when second baseman Robinson Cano's throw on a potential game-ending double play was up the line.

          Giants 6, Brewers 3

MILWAUKEE -- An "off" night from Madison Bumgarner was still plenty good enough to lead San Francisco past Milwaukee.

Bumgarner (6-2) struck out three and gave up four hits and two walks over six innings. He didn't allow a hit until the fourth, when third baseman Aramis Ramirez broke the shutout with a solo home run to left.

Brewers starter Matt Garza (2-7) went five innings and struck out seven, but he gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks to earn his fourth loss in five decisions.

          Rangers 4, Indians 3

CLEVELAND -- Prince Fielder's three-run home run and Mitch Moreland's solo homer accounted for all of the Texas' runs in a victory over Cleveland.

The Rangers came back from an early 3-0 deficit on the strength of the long ball. Five Texas pitchers combined on a five-hitter, with right-hander Keone Kela (4-1) getting the win. Right-hander Shawn Tolleson pitched a scoreless inning to earn his fifth save.

In the bottom of the ninth, an error and a hit batter put Indians at first and second with two outs, but Tolleson retired Michael Brantley on a grounder back to the mound to end the game.

          Twins 2, Red Sox 1

MINNEAPOLIS -- Mike Pelfrey tossed seven innings of one-run ball, leading Minnesota over Boston.

After a lengthy delay forced a late start to the game, Pelfrey (4-1) gave up a run in the second inning, then cruised from there, scattering just five hits and a walk. He is the third Twins starter in the past 20 years to enter June with an ERA under 3.00 after making at least five starts. His ERA is 2.77.

Boston's Clay Buchholz (2-6) allowed just two first-inning runs in his 7 1/3-inning stint.

          Padres 4, Angels 0 (10 innings)

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Matt Kemp broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, three-run double off Joe Smith in the 10th inning, lifting San Diego over Los Angeles.

Kemp's big hit made a winner of Padres reliever Dale Thayer (1-0), one of six San Diego pitchers to combine on a five-hit shutout. Craig Kimbrel pitched the bottom of the 10th in a non-save situation.

In the 10th, Jedd Gyorko singled, and he was replaced by pinch runner Abraham Almonte. A sacrifice bunt by Alexi Amarista and walks by Yangervis Solarte and Will Venable loaded the bases. One out later, Kemp came through with his bases-clearing hit, and he scored on Derek Norris' single.

          Tigers 1, A's 0

OAKLAND, Calif. -- David Price pitched seven shutout innings, and Detroit snapped its three-game losing streak with a victory over Oakland.

Price (4-1) allowed five hits, struck out three, walked one and hit a batter. He threw 109 pitches, 75 for strikes. The A's had runners on base in each of the first five innings, but Price escaped each of those jams, then retired the final six batters he faced.

A's right-hander Jesse Chavez (1-5) allowed one unearned run and five hits over eight innings but lost his third consecutive decision. Oakland's season-high, three-game winning streak came to a quiet end.

          Dodgers 8, Braves 0

LOS ANGELES -- Adrian Gonzalez homered and topped 1,000 career RBIs, and Clayton Kershaw fanned 10, sparking Los Angeles to a rout of Atlanta.

With his two-run shot in the fifth inning, Gonzalez became the 12th active player to reach the RBI milestone. His teammates forced him to the dugout steps to acknowledge the curtain call from the fans. Andre Ethier also drove in two runs for the Dodgers.

Kershaw (3-3) blanked the Braves on four hits and no walks in seven innings.

Rangers win seventh straight, all as dogs

The Texas Rangers are the hottest and most valuable bet in baseball, edging the Cleveland Indians 4-3 Tuesday night for their seventh straight win, all of which they were underdogs.

The Rangers have made $1060 during the streak and are now the fifth best money team in the bigs at $814 for the season.

The Rangers will be dogs once again when they go for eight in a row, as they close out their series with the Indians Wednesday afternoon.

Texas is currently a +150 road dog with Colby Lewis (4-2, 3.49 ERA) expected to start. Carlos Carrasco (5-4, 4.74 ERA) gets the call for the Tribe.

              Mets struggling with Carapazza umpiring

The New York Mets are 0-7 in their last seven ball games with umpire Victor Carapazza behind home plate calling pitches.

Carapazza will be working Wednesday's game at Citi Field as the Mets host the Philadelphia Phillies. It will be the first Mets game he's worked behind the dish this season.

Noah Syndergaard is the probable starter for the Mets (-177), while the Phillies are scheduled to counter with Sean O'Sullivan.

              Possible thunderstorms in Baltimore Wednesday

According to forecasts, there is a 58 percent possibility of thunderstorms in Baltimore when the Orioles host the Houston Astros Wednesday afternoon at Camden Yards.

The O's, scheduled to give Ubaldo Jimenez the ball, are presently -107, while the Astros are currently -101 with Colin McHugh scheduled to start.
