Preview: Rangers (19-23) at Yankees (22-20)
    Game: 3
    Venue: Yankee Stadium
    Date: May 24, 2015 8:05 PM EDT

When the Texas Rangers acquired Josh Hamilton on April 27, they ended the day as the worst hitting team in the majors. Help couldn't come soon enough.

Now entering what could be their final game without the rehabbing outfielder, the Rangers feature a lineup manager Jeff Banister might be hesitant to change.

Consecutive big days at the plate have the Rangers in position for a three-game road sweep of the free-falling New York Yankees on Sunday night, as well as their top winning streak of the season with Hamilton possibly making his season debut Monday in Cleveland.

Saturday's 15-4 win was the fourth in a row for Texas (20-23), which has 25 runs and 27 hits in this series. Every starter had a hit, and after batting .210 in April, the team is at .274 in May with an MLB-best 116 runs.

"Our guys have been working on a lot of things since spring training and you can really see that it's starting to pay off," Banister told MLB's official website. "I'm really proud of the effort they have put in."

The Rangers scored their first 10 runs in the third inning with Shin-soo Choo delivering a three-run homer and an RBI single. Choo hit .096 with one homer and five RBIs in 16 April games, but he's batting .316 with six home runs and 17 RBIs in 22 games this month.

Prince Fielder also had two hits in the inning and finished 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. He's gone deep three times with seven RBIs in the series and is batting .405 on a 10-game hitting streak against New York.

The Rangers have experienced most of their success on the road, going 14-10 with wins in 10 of their last 13, and now seek their first sweep at Yankee Stadium since May 2003.

New York (22-21), which hasn't been swept at home since June 30-July 2 against Tampa Bay, has dropped nine of 10 overall with a 6.59 ERA and is in danger of its first six-game skid since May 11-16, 2011.

Those struggles could continue with Chris Capuano on the mound. The left-hander made his season debut in a 6-0 loss at Kansas City last Sunday, surrendering four runs and four hits with two walks in three innings. Capuano had been out with a quadriceps strain suffered in spring training.

"It's disappointing," Capuano said. "Physically, I feel great. It was nice to be out there competing. I hope to stay locked in for the whole game next time, not have a letdown."

At Yankee Stadium, Capuano is 0-1 with a 5.50 ERA in seven starts since being traded from Colorado on July 24. Fielder is 2 for 8 with two home runs against the veteran.

The Rangers' last defeat came with Yovani Gallardo on the mound, and that result has been all too common lately. Gallardo (3-6, 4.26 ERA) allowed four runs and 10 hits in Tuesday's 4-3 loss in Boston. The right-hander fell to 1-5 with a 4.63 ERA in his last six starts, but the record is in part due to a 2.31 run-support average in that time.

"I felt good," Gallardo said. "I have been feeling pretty good, but my command was a little off. I wasn't able to command my sinker and I hung some pitches up in the zone."

Chase Headley (7 for 19) has had the most success against Gallardo, while Mark Teixeira (0 for 6), Chris Young (2 for 16), Stephen Drew (2 for 16 with eight strikeouts) and Brian McCann (3 for 17) have all struggled.

While Gallardo's only career start against the Yankees was a loss May 9 of last year, giving up four runs in 5 2-3 innings, Capuano hasn't started against Texas since 2007.

The Rangers last scored at least 10 runs in three straight games in September 2009.

Preview: Angels (22-20) at Red Sox (19-23)
      Game: 3
      Venue: Fenway Park
      Date: May 24, 2015 1:35 PM EDT

If Mike Napoli could face his former team more often, he might have avoided going through an early season slump.

The Boston first baseman will try to continue to pester the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday while leading the Red Sox to their first series victory at home this month.

Napoli was batting .178 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 36 games before this series but showed signs that he was perhaps ready to break out this past week. He went 4 for 12 with a home run in three contests against Texas and has followed with three more longballs against Los Angeles (22-21). He had a pair in an 8-3 win Saturday that ended a three-game losing streak for Boston (20-23).

Napoli, who played his first five seasons with the Angels, is batting .327 with 17 homers and 32 RBIs in 46 games against them. His .716 slugging percentage and 1.163 OPS are the best all-time marks against Los Angeles among qualifying players.

"It's been impressive to see what he's done against that team," manager John Farrell said. "I think more importantly for us, he's on time. It's more consistent than what we've seen in a number of years from Nap."

The Red Sox will next try to win a home series for the first time since taking two of three from Toronto from April 27-29. They had lost eight of 10 at Fenway Park before Saturday.

The Angels, winners in 11 of 17, will send out Hector Santiago (3-2, 2.25 ERA) as they try to finish with a winning record on a 10-game trip. The left-hander is 1-0 with a 0.93 ERA in his last three starts and 3-1 with a 1.90 ERA in his last seven.

Santiago yielded two runs in seven innings Tuesday in a 3-2 win at Toronto.

"What Hector is doing is really impressive. He's staying away of a lot of the trouble he got into last year," manager Mike Scioscia told MLB's official website. "He's able to command the ball better. And he has good stuff. He has the stuff to pitch out of jams, and he's done it."

Santiago is 0-2 with a 3.45 ERA in three career starts against Boston and pitched six scoreless innings Aug. 10 in his lone matchup last season.

Wade Miley (3-4, 5.10) will attempt to capture his third consecutive win after losing in three straight starts. The left-hander, owner of a 1.32 ERA in his past two outings, gave up two runs in seven innings and struck out seven in a 4-3 win over Texas on Tuesday.

Miley will face the Angels for the first time. David Freese and Chris Iannetta are among the three Los Angeles players to have batted against him with each going 3 for 5.

Iannetta did not play Saturday after hitting a three-run homer in a 12-5 victory Friday, Los Angeles' fifth in a row against the Red Sox. He is 9 for 21 with two homers and eight RBIs in his last six games.

Napoli is 0 for 4 with three strikeouts against Santiago but has walked five times. Dustin Pedroia has three doubles in seven at_bats versus Santiago and Shane Victorino is 2 for 2.

It's unclear if Victorino will play after leaving Saturday with an ailing left calf.

Preview: Orioles (19-20) at Marlins (16-27)
        Game: 3
        Venue: Marlins Park
        Date: May 24, 2015 1:10 PM EDT

Regardless of what the future holds, Dan Jennings and the Miami Marlins made the most of his first managerial victory.

Now that the party's ended, they'll look to win consecutive games for the first time in three weeks Sunday against the visiting Baltimore Orioles.

Miami (17-27) recorded seven hits in 13 innings but the last by Martin Prado with two-out and the bases loaded was the difference in Saturday's 1-0 victory that snapped an eight-game skid and gave Jennings his first victory since moving from the front office to the dugout.

"It has been a tough week and a half," Prado said. "Everybody was trying so hard to win a game. Everybody was trying to be a hero, but sometimes it doesn't happen.'

The Marlins came close over the previous five games since Jennings took over for the fired Mike Redmond, losing 3-2 in 13 innings to Arizona in his debut Monday and 7-6 to the Diamondbacks on Thursday.

'This is not about me,' said Jennings, the team's former general manager who splashed around in the stadium's nightclub pool after the win. 'Am I thrilled to have a first win as a manager? You bet. But much more important to me as a manager is to break an eight-game losing streak.'

While the victory was a relief, the Marlins still have been held to two or fewer runs seven times while winning twice in the last 13 games. They last won two straight as part of a four-game run April 28-May 2.

Giancarlo Stanton hasn't helped much while going 3 for 27 in his last seven games.

Building on that much-needed victory likely won't be easy against Miguel Gonzalez (5-2, 3.24 ERA), who tries to win a third straight start for Baltimore (19-21).

The right-hander allowed a solo homer and a three-run shot over the first three innings of the seven he lasted during Tuesday's 9-4 win over Seattle. It's the fourth time he's completed at least seven innings.

"He finds a way to sit there and make pitches when he needs to and keep the team in the game," catcher Caleb Joseph told MLB's official website.

Gonzalez is 2-1 with a 2.36 ERA in five interleague starts.

It remains to be seen if any disciplinary action will be taken against Baltimore reliever Brian Matusz, who was ejected in the 12th after umpires checked his arm for a foreign substance. The incident came one day after Milwaukee's Will Smith was suspended eight games for a similar issue Thursday in Atlanta.

'We're not going to address the issue right now,' said Matusz, 1-2 with a 3.60 ERA in 13 games. 'Obviously I have my own personal opinions about the issue, but right now with emotions running high we're going to let this settle and address questions at a later time.'

With two hits Saturday, teammate Jimmy Paredes is tied for the AL lead with a .352 average. He's 10 for 20 in the last four road games.

Baltimore slugger Chris Davis continues to struggle, going 0 for 6 with four strikeouts Saturday to drop his average to .210. He's 2 for 29 with 11 strikeouts in his last eight games.

The Orioles will get their first look at Tom Koehler (2-3, 3.70), who makes a second straight start with Jarred Cosart on the disabled list. Following one relief appearance, Koehler allowed two unearned runs in 6 2-3 innings while not factoring in the decision of Tuesday's 4-2 loss to Arizona.

"I'm not a guy that feels good about outings when we end up losing," said Koehler, who has yielded one earned run over 12 2-3 innings in his last two starts.

Though the right-hander has a 5.66 ERA in his last four interleague starts, he's gone 3-0.

Pitcher change - Reds' Johnny Cueto scratched

Cleveland vs. Cincinnati on May 24 at 1:10 PM. New Starter: Raisel Iglesias

Unders have another solid day on the diamond

The under came through for bettors in Major League Baseball action once again, going 10-6 Saturday.

In fact, the under has been the total to bet over the last week, going an impressive 58-35, cashing 62.37 percent of the time.

The recent under run has it catching up the over for the season at 296-313.

                  Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Top 6 teams as ranked by the Athlon Sports college football magazine, on newsstands everywhere.....

                  6) USC-- Defense needs to improve after a "disappointing" 9-4 season.

                  5) TCU-- Four seniors start on their offensive line, with a senior QB

                  4) Auburn-- Will Muschamp is the new DC; they don't play Florida.

                  3) Baylor-- Breaking in new QB; play Horned Frogs Nov 27.

                  2) Alabama-- Only two starters back on offense; they open with Wisconsin.

                  1) Ohio State-- Their #3 QB would start almost anywhere else.

                  **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.......

                  13) Imagine if the Warriors win the NBA title and Steve Kerr quits as coach to go back to ESPN to replace Jeff Van Gundy if he goes to New Orleans? Would that be a unique situation or what?

                  12) Tampa Bay Rays lost their GM, their manager, were given up for dead, but on May 24, they're in first place in AL East. Would be nice if their fans support them or they could wind up as the Montreal Expos one of these days.

                  11) I've heard all the arguments, still don't get the value of a pitcher batting 8thin the lineup; think the only reason some teams do it is because Tony Larussa used to do it, so if its good enough for him, it must be smart. Thing is, Larussa never did it in the playoffs, which is the truest test of what he thought of it.

                  10) Baseball players whine about playing 162 games, but they don't complain about how long spring training is; this I don't understand.

                  9) Baseball season is seven weeks old today; I watch a lot of games every day and I'm thinking my favorite analyst right now is Bob Brenly out in Arizona. He talks about the game, he is friendly and you learn stuff listening to him.

                  8) Mets are 7-14 on the road and David Wright has spinal stenosis; this isn't good for the New Yorkers, who need to use their pitching/catching depth to shore up their lineup and infield defense.

                  7) Giants split a twinbill in Denver last night; their win streak ended at 8; last time they had a 9-game win streak was in 2004, even though they've won three of the last five World Series.

                  6) Reds lost seven games in row; manager Brian Bleepin' Price was tossed before the game Saturday for bitching at the guy umpiring second base-- this was at home plate, while exchanging lineup cards.

Johnny Cueto was scratched from Sunday's start with a stiff elbow, so things aren't going too well for Cincinnati right now.

                  5) One of my favorite movie scenes: Steve Martin runs amuck in Roxanne:

                  4) Warriors 115, Rockets 80-- I gave up Houston for dead after they fell behind the Clippers 3-1 in last series; this will be a much tougher hill to climb.

                  3) NBA teams are 0-116 in 7-game series when they trailed 3-0.

                  2) If you're making a list of all-time great shooters, where is Curry on it?

                  1) Hank Aaron had 301 more RBI than anyone else who ever played.

Game of the Day: Hawks at Cavaliers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Cleveland Cavaliers (-9, 190)

                        Cavaliers lead series 2-0

The Atlanta Hawks are becoming short on time and will be without a key player when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers in Sunday’s Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals. Atlanta trails 2-0 in the best-of-7 series and announced Saturday that All-Star shooting guard Kyle Korver will miss the rest of the postseason with a severe right ankle sprain.

Korver had 12 points before being injured in Game 2 and the regular-season sharpshooter had a shaky postseason but still represents a big loss for the Hawks. Cleveland held out point guard Kyrie Irving (knee) on Friday and could so again Sunday as it returns home thinking of a sweep. Forward LeBron James has back-to-back 30-point outings in the series and was superb in Game 2 with 30 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds. “He helps us elevate our game,” power forward Tristan Thompson told reporters. “Playing with a great player like him just makes you want to get better, makes you want to put the time in watching film and I think that’s what great players do.”

                        TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: The lines opened at CLE -8, 191, but those dropped to CLE -9, 190 after the announcement of Korver's injury.

                        INJURY REPORT: Hawks - G Kyle Korver (Ques-Ankle), C Al Horford (Ques-Knee) Cavaliers - G Kyrie Irving (Ques-Knee)

ABOUT THE HAWKS: Two other Atlanta starters are ailing as center Al Horford briefly left Game 2 after hurting his right knee and small forward DeMarre Carroll was largely ineffective after playing with a sprained left knee suffered in Game 1. “I wouldn’t turn this chance down,” Carroll told reporters after having just six points and three rebounds in 34 minutes. “I wouldn’t turn this opportunity down for the world. I would’ve gone out there on one leg.” To remain in the series, the Hawks will hope key reserve Dennis Schroder steps up as well as receiving contributions from substitutes such as Kent Bazemore, Shelvin Mack and Mike Scott.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: Cleveland didn’t miss Irving in Game 2 as James took a playmaking approach and the Hawks were powerless to defend him. “I have a gift and that’s why I’m able to keep defenses off guard because they say ‘OK, we’re going to make him score or make him pass,’” James said in his postgame press conference. “They really can’t make me do what I don’t want to do. I go out and I play the game the right way.” The loss of power forward Kevin Love (shoulder) for the rest of the playoffs has become a non-issue with Thompson (16 rebounds in Game 2) controlling the boards to help the Cavaliers outrebound Atlanta 96-76 in the first two games.

                        TRENDS:

*Hawks are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a double-digit loss at home.
*Cavaliers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days.
*Under is 4-0 in Hawks last 4 overall.
*Under is 9-2 in Cavaliers last 11 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.

CONSENSUS: 60.4 percent of users are backing the Hawks with 59 percent on the over.

Hawks' Korver out for remainder of playoffs

According to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Hawks shooting guard Kyle Korver is out for the remainder of the NBA playoffs with an ankle injury.

The sharpshooter suffered the injury in Friday's Game 2 94-82 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Hawks find themselves in a 2-0 hole as the series shifts to Ohio.

Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals takes place on Sunday. As of this writing, the Hawks were +8.5 with a total of 190.5.

Irving's return for Game 3 a question mark for Cavs

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving tested his ailing left knee with a brace during practice and was listed as questionable for Sunday's Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Atlanta Hawks.

Irving sat out the Cavs' 94-82 victory over the Hawks in Game 2 on Friday night after tendinitis flared up in the knee. Cleveland took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series and could close out Atlanta at home.

During a workout on Saturday in Cleveland, Irving made cuts and drove to the basket while testing the knee. Trainers worked with him to adjust a brace.

Cavaliers coach David Blatt said the decision to play Irving on Sunday will be based on his medical condition. Irving went to Florida on Friday to consult renowned surgery Dr. James Andrews, who confirmed the tendinitis diagnosis but offered other ideas on how to treat the injury.

"If he's able to play, then he'll play," Blatt said.

LeBron's teams have never lost a series when up 2-0

The Cleveland Cavaliers topped the Atlanta Hawks 94-82 in hoops action Friday evening, grabbing a 2-0 series lead in the process.

In series when his teams have gone up two games to none, LeBron James-led squads have never allowed the other side to come back en route to advancing to the next round 14 times. Cleveland's series price at 5Dimes is sitting at -3,500.

Oddsmakers have tabbed the wine and gold as 8.5-point home favorites when action resumes Sunday in Cleveland.
