Game of the day: Warriors at Rockets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets (-1.5, 215.5)

    Warriors lead series 2-0

The Houston Rockets have their backs against the wall and hope to begin a comeback when they host the Golden State Warriors in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals on Saturday. Houston dropped the first two games on the road and failed to earn a split when James Harden fumbled the ball in the final seconds and didn’t get a shot off in a 99-98 defeat.

League MVP Stephen Curry is waging a major showdown with Harden and paced Golden State with 33 points in Game 2 and has made 11 3-pointers while averaging 33.5 points over the first two games. Harden is averaging 33 points, 10.5 rebounds, nine assists and 3.5 steals in the series but his 38-point effort in Game 2 was stained by the costly turnover at the finish. “Frustrating to give the game away like that for myself but my teammates and coaches were behind me, just saying that we’re going home to secure home now,” Harden said in his postgame press conference. “Ten out of 10 times we’ll take that play. It gave me confidence but it’s still frustrating when I know I could have at least got a shot up.” The Warriors have dominated the Rockets this season by winning all six meetings.

    TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY:The Rockets opened at 1-point underdogs before shifting to -1.5 by Friday. The total has been bet down from 216 to 215.5 since open.

    INJURY REPORT: Warriors - C Ognjen Kuzmic (Ques-Ankle) Rockets - C Dwight Howard (Prob-Knee)

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Center Andrew Bogut has bought into Golden State’s up-tempo offensive approach by accepting a role as a defender and rebounder and seldom puts up the solid offensive numbers he did earlier in his career. Yet he was a huge factor in Game 2 with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and also produced eight rebounds, five blocked shots and four assists. Bogut also put his typical strong defense on display and earlier in the week was named to NBA All-Defensive second team while teammate Draymond Green was a first-team choice.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS: Center Dwight Howard is listed as probable for Game 3 and will again wear a brace on his injured left knee after a surprisingly solid performance on Thursday. Howard sprained knee ligaments in the opening game and his availability for Game 2 was in question but he played 40 minutes and contributed 19 points and 17 rebounds. “I just tried to play as hard as I could,” Howard told reporters afterward. “I didn’t think about it at all. We’ll see how it feels. I just went out there and gave my teammates all that I could give them despite what happened with my knee.”

    TRENDS:

*Warriors are 4-9 ATS in the last 13 meetings in Houston.
*Rockets are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
*Under is 8-1 in Warriors last 9 overall.
*Over is 11-3 in Rockets last 14 home games.

CONSENSUS: 68.8 percent of users are backing the Rockets with 55.2 percent on the over.

Rockets continue to cash as underdogs

The Houston Rockets have covered their past five games, all of which saw the team as the underdog. The Rockets, who went 3-2 straight-up in their past five, have faced an average closing spread of +6.5.

The Rockets have not dropped either of their two SU losses, both to Golden State, by more than four points.

The Rockets are currently +1.5 as their series with the Warriors switches to Houston.

LeBron's teams have never lost when up 2-0

The Cleveland Cavaliers topped the Atlanta Hawks 94-82 in hoops action Friday evening, grabbing a 2-0 series lead in the process.

In series when his teams have gone up two games to none, LeBron James-led squads have never allowed the other side to come back en route to advancing to the next round 14 times.

Oddsmakers have tabbed the wine and gold as 8.5-point home favorites when the series resumes Sunday in Cleveland.

Reds scratch Cueto vs Indians (stiffness)

                        May 23, 2015

CLEVELAND (AP) - Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto was scratched from Sunday's start against the Cleveland Indians because of elbow stiffness and rookie Raisel Iglesias will start in his place.

The right-hander Iglesias is 1-0 with a 3.94 ERA in four appearances, including two starts.

Reds manager Bryan Price said he doesn't believe Cueto's stiffness is a serious issue, but wants to give the pitcher an extra day or two between starts. Cueto is 3-4 with a 3.03 ERA in nine starts.

''I've asked a lot of Johnny - he's been our workhorse - so if he needs a little rest, he certainly has earned it,'' Price said. ''We'll just plug him in whenever he's ready.''

Cueto was 20-9 with a 2.25 ERA and finished second in the NL Cy Young voting last season. He led the league with 34 starts, 243 2-3 innings pitched and 242 strikeouts. Cueto also made the All-Star team for the first time.

Catcher Devin Mesoraco has been sidelined again with a hip injury. He experienced increased pain in his left hip Friday while attempting catching drills.

Price said a decision to place Mesoraco on the disabled list ''is pending because he's not doing very well.''

He hasn't caught a game since April 12 and will be examined by team doctors when the Reds return to Cincinnati on Monday.

''Yesterday didn't go well and my hip doesn't feel good,'' said Mesoraco, who is batting .178 with two RBIs in 45 at_bats. ''It's upsetting because I expected to feel better by now, but it feels like it did at the beginning when I got hurt.''

Mesoraco has made four starts - all at designated hitter - and 13 pinch-hitting appearances since being injured.

He also made the All-Star team for the first time last season when he batted .273 and led NL catchers with 25 homers and 80 RBIs.

A's place Crisp on DL with cervical strain

                          May 23, 2015

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics have placed outfielder Coco Crisp on the 15-day disabled list with a cervical strain and recalled right-hander Kendall Graveman from Triple-A Nashville.

The moves were announced before Saturday's game against Tampa Bay.

Crisp hit .044 in 13 games this year. He began the season on the DL after having surgery on his right elbow and returned May 6.

Crisp also missed time with a neck injury in 2014 but did not go on the disabled list.

Graveman, called up to start Saturday against the Rays, went 1-2 with an 8.27 ERA in four starts before he was optioned to Nashville April 26.

Hawks' Korver out for rest of playoffs

                            May 23, 2015

ATLANTA (AP) - Hawks guard Kyle Korver is done for the playoffs because of an ankle injury, another blow to a team already trailing Cleveland 2-0 in the Eastern Conference finals.

He has a severe high right ankle sprain, and a foot and ankle specialist will determine the course of treatment, the team said Saturday.

While diving for a loose ball, Cleveland's Matthew Dellavedova slammed into the side of Korver's right ankle late in the third quarter of Game 2 Friday night. Korver hobbled off the court to the locker room and didn't return.

The Cavaliers won 94-82 and are home for Game 3 on Sunday night.

The 34-year-old Korver was selected for his first All-Star Game and for much of the season appeared on course to become the first player in NBA history to hit 90 percent of his free throws, 50 percent of his field goals and 50 percent of his 3-pointers.

But Korver slumped late in the season, missing out in all three categories. He continued to struggle in the playoffs as defenses clamped down, denying him many open looks. He was shooting just 39 percent and averaging 11.1 points.

The Hawks already were dealing with DeMarre Carroll's sprained left knee. After being helped off the court in the series opener, he was able to play in Game 2 but clearly didn't look at full speed, scoring only six points.

Atlanta, of course, won't get much sympathy from the Cavaliers. Kevin Love is out for the playoffs with a shoulder injury and Kyrie Irving has lingering knee problems. The point guard didn't play in Game 2, but the Cavaliers still romped behind LeBron James' 30 points.

                              Cavs' Irving tests knee, questionable

                              May 23, 2015

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) - Cavaliers All-Star guard Kyrie Irving played one-on-one while wearing a brace on his left knee, but remains questionable for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Irving sat out Cleveland's Game 2 win Friday in Atlanta after visiting famed surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Florida earlier in the day. Irving has been slowed by tendinitis in his left knee, an injury that resulted from him compensating for a sprained right foot.

Irving made sharp cuts and moved well Saturday during a short workout watched intently by coach David Blatt and the training staff.

Blatt says Irving's status for Sunday will depend on how he feels and a doctor's assessment. Blatt adds that the team's 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series will have no bearing on whether Irving plays.

Rangers searching for answers on D

                                May 21, 2015

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Henrik Lundqvist seems baffled.

The New York Rangers allowed 12 goals in losing their last two playoff games, and one of the NHL's top goalies is at a loss to explain why.

If Lundqvist and his teammates can't find answers in a hurry, their chances of overcoming a 2-1 deficit in the best-of-7 Eastern Conference finals don't appear good.

''It's really challenging for me, the way they move the puck and find open ice for the shot, the way they get scoring chances from right in front. They're good, but I need to be more consistent with my game plan,'' Lundqvist said Wednesday night after a 6-5 overtime loss in Game 3.

Game 4 is Friday night, with the Lightning looking to move a step closer to a spot in the Stanley Cup and the Rangers hoping even the series heading back to New York for Game 5 on Sunday.

''Sometimes as a team, we can be a little bit better, but also I have to be better,'' Lundqvist said. ''We're not going to win if I give up six goals.''

And the Rangers realize they have to help their goalie.

The speedy Lightning are only halfway to the four wins necessary to advance, however the way they've forged their series edge after dropping Game 1 2-1 on the road has been impressive.

The Rangers have a fast team, too, yet they've still had difficulty keeping up with Tampa Bay's Triplets, the high-scoring line featuring Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat and Nikita Kucherov.

Johnson scored his NHL playoff-leading 12th goal, Palate scored twice and Kucherov rammed the Game 3 winner past Lundqvist 3:33 into overtime.

''We found a way, and that's what the playoffs are all about - finding a way,'' Lightning captain Steven Stamkos said. ''It wasn't pretty at times, but you get the win and that's all that matters.''

Both team squandered two-goal leads Wednesday night. Tampa Bay went ahead again with under 6 minutes left in regulation, only to see the Rangers counter with under 2 minutes remaining.

Lundqvist said it's been tough to keep track of the puck with the Lightning seemingly able to do anything they want the past two games.

And while the Rangers say they need to do a better job on defense in front of the goaltender, both teams agree it won't be easy to slow the pace of play.

''I think both teams want to play fast. I think that's been our identity all season long,'' Stamkos said.

''How do you slow a game down between two really fast teams?'' Lightning coach Jon Cooper offered. ''I think it's just two hockey teams trying to win a game. If it's 6-5 or 2-1, you're still trying to win a game.''

Nevertheless, it's difficult to imagine the Rangers prevailing without finding a way to get back to playing low-scoring games.

Nine of the 15 games they've played this postseason have been decided by a score of 2-1, with New York winning seven of those games.

Still, coach Alain Vigneault rejected the notion that his team has to prevent the Lightning from setting the tempo.

''I don't think either team can dictate the pace of the game,'' Vigneault said Thursday, noting the Rangers did score five goals on Tampa Bay's Ben Bishop in Game 3.

''It was a good hockey game,'' the coach added.

Tampa Bay won Game 2 on the road, converting three of six power-play opportunities. Wednesday night, they scored at least five goals on Lundqvist for the fourth time in six meetings between the teams this season (including three regular season games).

Rangers center Derek Stepan said a lack of discipline, leading to penalties, undermined New York in Game 2. He called Game 3 ''just one of those games'' where each team was able to take advantage of mistakes by the other and put the puck in the net.

Even though the Lightning won, they weren't entirely comfortable with it turning into a run-and-gun game.

''We think we definitely have the talent to'' play that way,'' center Alex Killorn said. ''But I think prefer not to trade chances because you never know what could happen. I think if we played a more structured game defensively, that would be to our advantage.''

The Rangers aim to play better defense, too, in hopes of giving Lundqvist a chance.

''You have to believe you can make a difference,'' the goalie said. ''I have to play better. I'll do whatever I can.''

New York is counting on it.

''Hank is very accountable, very demanding of himself,'' Vigneault said. ''He's going to do what any good goaltender does. He's going to put (Wednesday's) game behind him and move on to (Friday night).''
