Preview: Giants (22-18) at Rockies (14-23)
    Game: 1
    Venue: Coors Field
    Date: May 22, 2015 8:10 PM EDT

The San Francisco Giants ended their previous series against one of the NL's best teams without surrendering a run.

Now they get to face one of the league's worst.

Ryan Vogelsong will be tasked with maintaining the Giants' winning and shutout streaks Friday night in the opener of a four-game series with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

The Giants (23-18) are riding high after extending their win streak to six by sweeping the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers to become the first team since Milwaukee in July 2013 to not allow a run over a three-game series.

San Francisco last accomplished the feat June 25-27, 2012, also against the Dodgers, and with one three-game shutout streak already under their belt May 3-5, the Giants became the first team since Atlanta in 1992 to have multiple streaks of three games in one season.

San Francisco hasn't won seven in a row since an eight-game run in September 2011, and it has won 20 of 29 after getting off to a poor start.

"Your offense, your pitching, sometimes it's up and down but what you do is come out and play hard and fight for nine innings," manager Bruce Bochy said. "They never stopped that."

Vogelsong (2-2, 5.31 ERA) has been solid recently, touting a 1.37 ERA over his last three starts while holding batters to a .181 average.

He has been terrible in his last five starts against Colorado, however, going 0-3 with a 10.55 ERA. All three of those decisions came at Coors Field behind a 13.50 ERA.

Vogelsong matched a career high with eight runs allowed Sept. 3 at Colorado and tied the second-shortest start of his career with 1 1-3 innings and five runs allowed on three homers at Coors Field on April 21, 2014.

Troy Tulowitzki has surprisingly inflicted none of that damage, going 0 for 10 against the right-hander - one of two pitchers Tulowitzki has failed to record a hit against in at least 10 at_bats.

Carlos Gonzalez has also struggled in the matchup, managing one hit in 15 at_bats and striking out five times.

The rest of Colorado's lineup has done just fine. Michael McKenry and Nolan Arenado are a combined 8 for 18 with two home runs apiece against Vogelsong, and Wilin Rosario has three homers.

Colorado (15-23) beat Philadelphia 7-3 on Thursday to win two of the last three in the four-game series. McKenry hit a two-run homer and Brandon Barnes went 4 for 4 in his second game of the season after being recalled Wednesday.

"Some guys contributed, some guys that have been role players so far," said manager Walt Weiss, whose team hasn't won two in a row since a three-game run April 22-24.

Kyle Kendrick (1-5, 6.70) will take the mound after allowing three runs over 14 innings in his last two starts, but he's still winless since the season opener.

The right-hander made five starts against the Giants during his eight-year stint with the Phillies, going 1-2 with a 5.81 ERA.

Justin Morneau is eligible to return from the seven-day concussion disabled list Friday but is still not ready to play. Morneau missed time with concussions in 2005, '10 and '11.

"It's a concern. It's still a mild concern," Weiss told MLB's official website. "He's showing improvement, getting better, but it's all tied to his history."

Preview: Brewers (15-27) at Braves (20-20)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Turner Field
      Date: May 22, 2015 7:35 PM EDT

The Atlanta Braves are capitalizing on strong efforts on the mound, while an infraction on it proved costly for the Milwaukee Brewers.

After an ejection for an illegal substance led to a big inning for the Braves, they look to Alex Wood to deliver another impressive performance against the NL-worst Brewers on Friday night.

Atlanta (20-20) has a 3.97 ERA on the season, but the staff has a 1.83 mark while winning five of the last six games. Julio Teheran and two relievers combined on a two-hitter in a 10-1 win over Milwaukee (15-27) in Thursday's opener of this four-game set.

The Braves' highest scoring performance of the month featured a seven-run seventh inning, and six came after Brewers reliever Will Smith was ejected for having a combination of rosin and sunscreen on his right forearm.

"It was about as plain as it could be," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "It's pretty blatant. Really. It's glistening through the lights. You could see it in the dugout."

Wood (2-2, 3.83 ERA), meanwhile, is 0-2 with a 6.19 ERA in three home starts after compiling a 1.59 ERA while winning four of his final five there last year.

However, he is coming off one of his best performances of the season, allowing two runs - one earned - and seven hits in seven innings of Saturday's 5-3 win at Miami. That was six days after the left-hander overcame a three-run first by tossing 5 1-3 scoreless while not getting a decision in a 5-4 loss at Washington.

"We're still talking about some things and working on those," Wood told MLB's official website. "But the results the last two starts are definitely encouraging. It's nice to know when I'm working on things and trying to figure things out, I can still put up outings like (Saturday). I've just got to keep working and go from there."

Wood is 2-0 while allowing one run in 10 1-3 innings over five meetings with the Brewers. He yielded one run in seven innings in a 5-2 win in his only career start against them April 1, 2014.

The Brewers' .226 batting average is the worst in the majors, and they've hit .195 with 2.3 runs per game while losing six of the last seven games with Atlanta.

Ryan Braun is 2 for 25 with a homer and two RBIs over that stretch. He went 0 for 3 with an RBI on a sacrifice fly Thursday after batting .340 with five homers and 15 RBIs over the previous 14 games.

Milwaukee is starting Wily Peralta (1-5, 4.32), who is 0-5 with a 5.18 ERA over his last six road starts. He's dropped all three this year with a 5.63 ERA while allowing opponents to hit .380.

The right-hander was hammered for five runs and nine hits with three walks in five-plus innings of a 5-1 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday.

He's 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in three career starts against the Braves, but lost his only visit to Atlanta 9-3 on May 19, 2014. He gave up three runs and nine hits with four walks in five innings.

Peralta served up a solo homer to Freddie Freeman, who went 2 for 3 in that meeting.

Freeman is batting .348 in 16 games after collecting two hits and two RBIs on Thursday.

Preview: Reds (18-22) at Indians (17-23)
        Game: 1
        Venue: Progressive Field
        Date: May 22, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

The Cincinnati Reds have been baseball's worst team with runners in scoring position, and they're trending in the wrong direction during their longest losing streak of the season.

They're hoping some of their top hitters can draw on past success against the Cleveland Indians as they rekindle the Battle of Ohio on Friday night at Progressive Field.

Cincinnati (18-22) has been outscored 40-13 while losing five straight, and Wednesday's 7-1 defeat at Kansas City dropped it a season-worst four games below .500.

The Reds, batting a big league-worst .189 with runners in scoring position this year, are 10 for 73 (.137) in those situations during a 3-8 stretch. They haven't had a lead during the five-game skid and trailed by the second inning in each defeat.

"We've got to find a will to get back into a game when we get down," said Brandon Phillips, batting a team-leading .314. "It comes down to expectations. It's easy to say that it's early, but one day we're going to come in here and it won't be. We've got to play better baseball."

Zack Cozart and Marlon Byrd are each 2 for 20 during the losing streak while Joey Votto is 4 for 20 and hasn't driven in a run in six games. All three have had success versus Cleveland, however.

Votto has eight homers and 18 RBIs in his last 17 meetings, though injury kept him out for last year's meetings. Byrd is 15 for 35 with 12 RBIs in his last nine against the Indians but hasn't faced them since 2012. While Cozart has hit .405 in 11 career matchups, Phillips is a lifetime .350 hitter versus Cleveland.

The Reds need Mike Leake (2-2, 3.62 ERA) to bounce back from one of the worst outings of his career. He gave up a personal-worst nine runs and 11 hits - including three homers - over five innings in Saturday's 11-2 loss to San Francisco. The right-hander had given up one run in his previous 22 innings.

Leake is 1-0 with a 3.28 ERA in four matchups with Cleveland.

This interleague rivalry has been extremely competitive, with the Indians holding a 45-44 advantage. Though Cleveland won nine more games last year, the Reds won three of four meetings. The Indians had won 10 straight at home in the series before a 9-2 loss Aug. 5.

Cleveland (17-23) comes into this one with much better vibes after a 5-2 road trip, though it needs to improve upon a 6-12 home start.

"You've got to start somewhere, and we have a long way to go but we're playing better baseball," manager Terry Francona said. "Hopefully, that will continue for the rest of the season."

The Indians scored four runs in the first inning of Thursday's 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox with Mike Aviles and Nick Swisher both homering. Aviles is batting .406 over his last nine games.

Carlos Santana was 0 for 4 after missing four games with back spasms.

Carlos Carrasco (4-4, 4.98) comes off the fourth complete game of his career, though it wasn't overly impressive in a 5-1 loss at Texas on Sunday. He's received three runs of support over his four losses.

Like his team, Carrasco has struggled at home, going 1-2 with a 7.11 ERA in three outings. He's given up seven runs over 10 innings in two career starts versus Cincinnati.

Votto is 2 for 3 off Carrasco with a home run and a double.

Preview: Cubs (23-17) at Diamondbacks (19-21)
          Game: 1
          Venue: Chase Field
          Date: May 22, 2015 9:40 PM EDT

As Jon Lester tries to remain perfect this month for the Chicago Cubs, the Arizona Diamondbacks look to stay undefeated for this week.

The left-hander attempts to win five straight starts for the first time in almost five years and help the visiting Cubs keep the Diamondbacks from extending their longest winning streak in nearly two years Friday night.

Lester (4-2, 3.70 ERA) didn't fret while going 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in four April starts, and he's regrouped quite nicely to go 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four May outings. The only time he's won more consecutive starts was a six-game streak Aug. 27-Sept. 25, 2010.

He overcame nine hits to allow a run and strike out seven over seven innings of Saturday's 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh. After successfully pitching the Cubs (23-17) out of a jam in the seventh, Lester empathetically pumped his fist while walking off the mound to further ignite an already raucous crowd.

"He wears his heart on his sleeve and it's pretty cool to see out of a guy like that," Cubs rookie Kris Bryant said.

Because Lester has a personal catcher in backup David Ross, who has started all of Lester's eight games, Miguel Montero may have to wait a day to make his return to the field in Arizona (19-21). Montero spent his first nine seasons with the Diamondbacks, reaching No. 2 in franchise history in games played (906) and third in RBIs (448), before being traded to Chicago in December.

"To move Miggy was a difficult decision," Arizona general manager Dave Stewart said at the time.

Montero, batting .286 after going 1 for 11 this week in San Diego, had helped Arizona win the final five meetings with the Cubs last season.

His former team now returns home from recording a four-game sweep at Miami after being swept in three at Philadelphia. It's the Diamondbacks' longest winning stretch since taking five in a row July 3-7, 2013.

"To rebound from the last series really shows our character," center fielder A.J. Pollock said after Arizona used a four-run sixth inning to win 7-6 on Thursday.

Pollock went 6 for 10 with a homer, three RBIs, three steals and five runs in the last three games of the trip after going 2 for 16 in the first four.

Though Josh Collmenter (3-5, 5.36) is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in three home starts against the Cubs, he's 1-4 with a 6.84 ERA at Chase Field this year. The right-hander has yielded six home runs while posting an 11.30 ERA in May after giving up four runs in six innings of Sunday's 6-0 defeat at Philadelphia.

          "Not very good," Collmenter said.

Chicago's Anthony Rizzo is 1 for 13 in the last four games but 4 for 10 with two doubles and a home run against Collmenter.

Bryant is batting .394 during a 10-game hitting streak. He has five home runs and 14 RBIs over the last 12 after hitting a two-run homer in Thursday's 3-0 victory at San Diego.

"I finally got a hanging curve ball," Bryant said. "I like to hit those. Those are usually easier to get in the air."

Arizona rookie Yasmany Tomas, meanwhile, is 13 for 26 with four RBIs while recording six straight multihit games.

Lester's only start against the Diamondbacks in the past five years came in 2013 when he gave up six runs and 11 hits over 4 1-3 innings of a 7-6 loss with Boston.

Preview: Twins (23-17) at White Sox (18-20)
            Game: 1
            Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
            Date: May 22, 2015 8:10 PM EDT

The Minnesota Twins' turnaround can be traced to their series sweep of the Chicago White Sox three weeks ago.

The Twins look to continue rolling as they face the White Sox in the opener of this three-game set on the South Side on Friday night.

Minnesota (23-17) was three games under .500 before outscoring Chicago 31-8 and winning all four games from April 30-May 3. The Twins had five homers among their 50 hits, batted .347 and posted a 1.75 ERA.

That started Minnesota on a 14-5 stretch, moving it six games over .500 this late in a season for the first time since ending 2010 as AL Central champion.

Joe Mauer delivered the latest victory, hitting a solo homer in the 13th of a 4-3 win at Pittsburgh on Wednesday. He's 7 for 20 with five RBIs in five games after connecting for his first homer since Aug. 17, a span of 76 games.

"They can come in bunches, hopefully that's the case," Mauer said. "It was a matter of time before I got the first one under my belt. Took a little longer than it has before, but I'm glad it came when it did."

Phil Hughes (3-4, 4.76 ERA) takes the mound, and he's won three straight starts despite a 5.12 ERA after his first five ended in defeat for the Twins. The right-hander is also coming off his best outing of that stretch, yielding two runs in seven innings of a 3-2 win over Tampa Bay last Friday.

"Everybody has to step up and do their job. You can't really afford to have guys that aren't pitching well in the rotation," Hughes said. "I knew I had to be better. Hopefully this puts me in a spot where I can continue to improve."

Hughes has a 4.50 ERA while losing three consecutive starts against the White Sox (18-20), and he's 0-3 with a 4.32 ERA over his last four in Chicago.

He didn't pitch in Minnesota's sweep of Chicago, but he allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings of a 6-2 road loss April 12 as Minnesota dropped two of three at U.S. Cellular Field.

Chicago has lost a season-high three straight games at home after falling 5-2 to Cleveland on Thursday.

Turning to Jeff Samardzija (3-2, 4.58) could help since he's 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in five career starts at U.S. Cellular - two as a visitor.

The right-hander has won his last two games there, yielding two runs in 13 innings. However, that came after he gave up four runs and eight hits in seven innings while not figuring in the decision of a 5-4 win against Minnesota on April 11.

He's 1-1 with a 7.56 ERA in three career starts versus the Twins.

Samardzija was solid at Oakland on Sunday, yielding three runs and eight hits while throwing a season-high 120 pitches over eight innings of a 7-3 win.

"He's always been a high-pitch guy," manager Robin Ventura told MLB's official website. "I think as the game went along you're looking at him as just getting sharper. You understand he's been there. I think he thrives on it somewhat."

Jose Abreu has a .323 average during a 16-game hitting streak, the longest active run in the majors. While the stretch started with a single at Minnesota on May 3, he's 4 for 25 against the Twins this season after hitting .391 in 18 meetings last year.

Abreu is 6 for 13 with three doubles versus Hughes.

Preview: Cardinals (27-14) at Royals (26-14)
              Game: 1
              Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
              Date: May 22, 2015 8:10 PM EDT

Chris Young entered the Kansas City Royals' rotation on a fill-in basis, and while he maintains his endurance was at first lacking, success came immediately.

His fellow starters seem to be catching on, and a recent hot streak has the Royals off to their best 40-game start heading into a three-game home series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.

The Royals (26-14) have won five of six after sweeping a two-game home set against Cincinnati with Wednesday's 7-1 victory. The run came off the bullpen, giving their starters a 20-inning scoreless stretch over a three-game winning streak. Dating to Young's last outing, the starters have allowed five runs in five games after posting a 4.64 ERA.

It's the latest ingredient to the club's confidence.

"There is a real strong feeling when they walk through those clubhouse doors, they are going to win the baseball game that day," manager Ned Yost said. "It's a great feeling to have."

Young improved to 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA in three starts with last Friday's 12-1 home win over the New York Yankees. The right-hander allowed four hits and his first earned run as a starter with a season-high 91 pitches over 5 2-3 innings as he occupies the injured Jason Vargas' spot in the rotation.

Young (3-0, 0.94), whose future as a starter is undetermined with Vargas expected to throw a simulated game Friday, felt he could have gone deeper into the game.

"My endurance has definitely gotten better," Young told MLB's official website. "Last time in the sixth inning, I felt a little tired, but tonight I felt good. But the matchups and the game dictated tonight I come out."

He hasn't faced St. Louis (27-14) since 2010 and is 0-3 with a 3.65 ERA in five starts.

Lance Lynn (3-3, 2.96) has arguably been better than Young while winning consecutive starts. Lynn held Detroit to a run and six hits in 7 1-3 innings of Sunday's 2-1 home win after throwing six scoreless innings in a victory at Cleveland on May 12.

It's the kind of stretch manager Mike Matheny was hoping for from Lynn with ace Adam Wainwright done for the season.

"Lance was great, no question about it," Matheny said Sunday. "That's what you really want from a guy who is taking charge of a staff."

Against the Royals, the right-hander has a 5.84 ERA in two starts without a decision. Alex Gordon is 5 for 7 off Lynn, while Mike Moustakas is 3 for 6 with two home runs. Moustakas, a .333 hitter in 14 games against St. Louis, was 6 for 8 against Cincinnati. A season after managing two three-hit performances in 140 games, he has seven with at least three.

Both of Lynn's recent wins have followed defeats, and he'll get another chance to turn things around after Thursday's 5-0 road loss to the New York Mets.

With Matt Holliday out of the lineup, St. Louis managed two hits and settled for a four-game split. Holliday has reached base in each of his 38 games, which is four shy of matching Albert Pujols' club record to start a season in 2008. The left fielder has a .536 on-base percentage in his last 12 against Kansas City.

The Royals have won four of the last five against the Cardinals, and this is the first time in the clubs' 80-game history both are entering a series alone in first place.

                Date: May 22, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Dodgers can enter the record books with another futile offensive effort, but they may not need to do much with Zack Greinke facing the San Diego Padres.

Greinke looks to bounce back from his first loss of the season by continuing his mastery of the visiting Padres in the opener of this three-game set Friday night.

The Dodgers (24-16) are among the highest scoring teams in the majors at 4.7 runs per game. However, they failed to produce a run while being swept in a three-game set at San Francisco, losing the finale 4-0 on Thursday to extend their scoreless streak to 31 innings.

A shutout Friday would set a franchise record and make Los Angeles the first team in the majors to go four straight games without a run since the Chicago Cubs from April 27-May 1, 1992.

It would also surpass the Dodgers' 36 consecutive scoreless innings from 1937, their longest such streak since 1912. They went 33 innings without a run in June 2012.

"You don't think you'll come here and not score a run for three games," said manager Don Mattingly, who watched his team hit .220, go 0 for 17 with runners in scoring position and strand 29 overall in San Francisco.

Greinke (5-1, 1.52 ERA) didn't get any support while allowing one run in six innings of Saturday's 7-1 loss to Colorado, but he shrugged it off.

"It happens," said Greinke, who was 16-0 with a 1.79 ERA over his previous 20 starts against NL West teams.

Still, the right-hander is 22-2 with a 1.94 ERA in 33 intradivision starts since joining the Dodgers two years ago. He's also 5-0 with a 1.58 ERA in nine career outings against the Padres (20-22), allowing one run and six hits in 13 innings in two meetings this year.

Greinke earned a 3-0 win at San Diego on April 24, scattering four hits and striking out seven in seven innings. He could be due for another gem since the Padres have hit .184 and scored 12 runs while dropping five of their last six.

They mustered five singles and had only one runner reach scoring position in Thursday's 3-0 loss to the Cubs.

"We can't hang our heads. We've got a big road (trip) coming up, we'll be facing good pitching. We should be used to it by now," third baseman Will Middlebrooks told MLB's official website of facing the Dodgers and Angels over the next six games.

Middlebrooks has been a rare offensive bright spot with four hits in two games, improving to 9 for 26 (.346) in his past seven.

Andrew Cashner (1-7, 3.24) has been backed by two total runs while losing a career-high five straight starts with a 3.55 ERA. That includes a loss opposite Greinke on April 24, when he allowed two runs in seven innings.

The right-hander didn't help himself Saturday, giving up three runs in the first inning before allowing one more over the next five of a 4-1 loss to Washington.

"I left a lot of fastballs up. I've got to be better," said Cashner, who leads the majors in losses while already matching his total from last year.

He surrendered six runs and eight hits in five innings of a 7-4 loss at Dodger Stadium on April 8, and continued to have major problems with Adrian Gonzalez, who hit three homers.

Gonzalez's four home runs are the most Cashner has allowed to any hitter, and he's 10 for 28 (.357) lifetime off him.

                  Angels visit Red Sox

                  May 22, 2015

LOS ANGELES ANGELS (21-20) at BOSTON RED SOX (19-22)

                  Sportsbook.ag Line: Boston -110, Los Angeles +100, Total: 8.5

The Los Angeles Angels and Boston Red Sox meet at Fenway Park for the start of a weekend series on Friday night.

The Angels have been flirting around the .500 mark all year and they have recently been able to get over the hump with a 10-5 record in their last 15 games. They have won or split each of the last five series and recently took 2-of-4 games in Toronto to start the week. L.A. was outscored 23-17 in the split and was unable to win the series after an 8-4 loss on Thursday. The offense had limited opportunities to score, going 2-for-5 with RISP as three of the four runs came from the long ball. OF Mike Trout (.295) has continued to play at an elite level and was 5-for-10 with a double, HR and five runs in the last three contests.

Boston has not given itself much of a chance this year with its inconsistent play and has lost four of its last six games coming into this matchup. They were unable to do much of anything against the lowly Texas Rangers, losing 2-of-3 games and scoring a meager six runs in the process. The final game was a 3-1 defeat as the Red Sox were 0-for-6 with RISP and failed to back a solid outing by starter Clay Buchholz (7.1 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K). It will be RHP Garrett Richards (3-2, 2.29 ERA) that gets the call for the Angels in this matchup as he goes against RHP Rick Porcello (4-2, 4.26 ERA) of the host Red Sox.

With Thursday’s loss, Los Angeles saw its road record move to .500 (11-11) as it faces this Boston group which is a poor 8-11 when playing at home. The Angels have gotten the best of this opponent recently, winning 8-of-13 games since the start of 2013 and are a solid 5-2 in Fenway Park. Last time they visited here they took 3-of-4 games as the Red Sox scored a total of eight runs. Trends show that Boston is a putrid 26-47 (.356) at home when the total is 8.5 to 10 in the past two seasons as Porcello’s teams are 17-6 (.739) in the first half of the season when he starts in the same timeframe. The injury report has 1B Albert Pujols (Wrist) as questionable for the Angels while 3B Pablo Sandoval (Knee) is questionable and Cs Ryan Hanigan (Hand) and Christian Vazquez (Elbow) are out for the Red Sox.

Richards has been phenomenal through his first six starts of the year with 36 strikeouts in 39.1 IP (8.2 K/9) and a 2.29 ERA. He has done this despite showing some shaky control (3.9 BB/9) as he is giving up a mere 0.23 HR/9. The 26-year-old is getting away with batters hitting a mere .220 BABIP as he has let just 2.8% of his fastballs leave the park. He has not allowed more than three runs in any of his outings this year and has given his team at least six frames of work in all but his first start. He’s pitched against the Red Sox six times (2 starts) in his career, going 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA (1.80 WHIP) with a poor 11:6 K/BB ratio in 13.1 innings. In the two starts he has totaled eight innings, giving up five runs (3 ER) with a hit given up per inning.

No one on Boston has more than seven at-bats against the righty, but 1B Mike Napoli (4-for-7, 1 double, 1 HR, 3 RBI) has been great in the limited time as OF Brock Holt is hitless with two strikeouts in six at-bats. The bullpen for Los Angeles is 6-5 with a 3.30 ERA (1.14 WHIP) and are 14-for-21 (67%) in save chances. Huston Street (2.55 ERA, 14 saves) continues to impress and has pitched six straight scoreless innings with two hits allowed and an 8:0 K/BB ratio coming into this game.

The Red Sox grabbed Porcello with high hopes and thus far it has been a mixed bag with his four most recent showings being impressive. In that time he has pitched 25.2 innings, allowing six runs on 23 hits with a 21:5 K/BB ratio. Boston was 4-0 during that time and signs are looking good for the 26-year-old as he is striking out a career-high 7.8 batters per nine innings and continues to show solid control (2.3 BB/9). He’s had 11 starts against the Angels in his career, going 4-4 with a bloated 6.52 ERA (1.53 WHIP), but did great in two outings against them last year, totaling 14 IP and giving up two runs (1 ER) on 10 hits in that time.

OF Mike Trout (5-for-15, 1 HR, 6 RBI) has hit the righty hard, but SS Erik Aybar and OF Matt Joyce have combined to go a mere 7-for-38 (.184) with seven strikeouts. The relievers for the Sox are a combined 7-5 with a 3.62 ERA (1.32 WHIP) and have successfully converted 10-of-16 (63%) of saves. Koji Uehara (2.08 ERA, 10 saves) has just one of the blown saves and has given up one run on two hits with a 9:2 K/BB ratio in his last 8.2 innings of work.

                    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Six things you may or may not know about the movie My Cousin Vinny.......

-- The movie screenwriter wanted Robert Deniro to play Vinny, but was talked out of it by people who thought Deniro wasn't funny enough- whoops.

-- Joe Pesci actually learned the card trick he does early in the movie, so it would look better than if they edited the trick into the movie.

-- Fred Gwynne played the judge; he is best known for playing Herman Munster in the 60's TV comedy The Munsters.

-- There is a lawyer somewhere who failed the bar exam 13 times before he passed.

-- Prison guards in the movie weren't actors, they were actual prison guards.

-- The phrase "the two yutes" which is in one of the best courtroom scenes actually came up in a conversation between Pesci and the movie's director- they decided to utilize it in the movie.

                    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.......

                    13) If you live in the Albany area and you like high school basketball, there is an excellent tournament this weekend; the Gym Rat Challenge, held at various locations in the Albany area-- it used to be held mostly at Siena College, but the NCAA put the kibosh on D-I schools hosting events like this, which is just another example of their over-bloated rule book.

This is a really well-run event; lot of good players. Here is a link to the event's website-- like I said, its very well-run.

                    12) There was sentiment to move 2-point conversions in the NFL to the 1-yard line, but they'll stay at the 2-yard line this year. if more teams are going to try for two with PAT's now 32-yard tries, they'll need a running style QB and the Eagles might look smart for having Tim Tebow around.

                    11) At one point this year, the A's were 8-8; now they're 14-29, so this has been a disasterous month for them, marked by a hideous bullpen and putrid infield defense, especially on the left side, so they made a move this week, bringing back Ron Washington as an infield instructor.

Washington is a great infield coach (Eric Chavez gave him one of his Gold Gloves) so his presence can't hurt. If only he could hit lefties......

                    10) Oakland is 1-9 vs lefty starters; they traded Cespedes/Donaldson, yet their payroll is the same as it was last year. Not good.

                    9) People in Texas are nuts about high school football. Former NFL QB Jon Kitna recently got hired to coach a team in Texas, earning $95K a year- some of his assistants are making as much as $70K, even though the entry-level salary for teachers in that district is $44K. Not everyone is happy about this.

                    8) Tim Lincecum has more strikeouts than Carl Hubbell? Wow. Hubbell had 1,677 strikeouts in 3,590.1 IP. Lincecum has 1,680 in 1,615 IP.

                    7) Too many college basketball players transfer; things aren't great right off the bat, so they bolt for greener pastures. Frank Kaminsky started two games in his first two years at Wisconsin, but he stayed the course and was a great player his last two years in college. More kids should follow his example.

                    6) Damn, the centerfield fence at Comerica Field in Detroit is 420 feet from home plate, even farther than in Miami (418) although CF fence in Miami is higher. It takes quite a poke to hit the ball out in CF in those two parks, which is stupid for the Marlins, considering they have Giancarlo Stanton.

                    5) Mike Babcock took less money fron the Maple Leafs than Buffalo offered him, which doesn't happen a lot. I mean, his family will still be able to put food on the table, but usually the highest bidder wins these things.

                    4) If you ever wondered what Archie Manning was like as a player, he was a right-handed version of Steve Young, even wore #8. Archie was nothing like his sons are, immobile pocket passers- he could run and throw and he played for terrible Saint teams so he got pummeled more often than not.

                    3) If you care about such things, Minnesota Twins have scored in first inning in eight of their last ten road games, so they're doing good video review on opposing pitchers. You can wager on that you know, whether a team will score in the first inning or not. Our baseball page has all that info every day.

                    2) Cubs ended their 3-man catching logjam by dealing Wellington Castillo to Seattle, bad news for Mike Zunino's fantasy owners.

                    1) The end of last night's Houston-Golden State game is why coaches like to strangle end-game situations with timeouts- they don't trust players to make the right play. I was stunned James Harden didn't get to the baskt on the last play-- Golden State dodged a huge bullet by not blowing that game.

Indians and White Sox cash Under bets in 14th-straight meeting

Well, we hope you've been paying attention.

After the Cleveland Indians' 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox Thursday night, the teams played to the under for the 14th consecutive time when facing each other.

The under is also a crazy 22-3 between the AL Central rivals dating back to last season.

After cashing Under tickets in all four games this past series, the Indians begin a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds, while the Sox host the Minnesota Twins for three games.
