Preview: Rays (20-16) at Twins (19-16)
Game: 2
Venue: Target Field
Date: May 16, 2015 2:10 PM EDT
The Tampa Bay Rays have pitched relatively well in their last eight games, but Alex Colome's most recent start was the lone exception.
Colome will try to get back on track Saturday while the Minnesota Twins' Trevor May will also attempt to rebound from a lackluster performance with another solid showing at home.
Tampa Bay (20-17) has allowed three runs or fewer in seven of its last eight, posting a 3.17 ERA and dropping its overall mark to 3.43. That ERA would be even lower if not for an 11-5 loss to the New York Yankees on Monday.
Colome (2-1, 5.63 ERA) was charged with eight runs - all on four homers - and 11 hits in his six innings. The right-hander hadn't given up more than four runs in any of his eight major league starts and had allowed a combined two in 10 innings in his first two since returning from a bout of pneumonia.
"We like what Alex has done. He's thrown the ball really well. Tonight wasn't maybe his sharpest, but he's had two really good starts before this," manager Kevin Cash said.
Colome will try for a better showing while helping the Rays bounce back from the end to a three-game win streak and just their fifth loss in 20 all-time games at Target Field. Danny Santana hit an RBI triple in the seventh inning Friday and scored the go-ahead run on Brian Dozer's sacrifice fly in a 3-2 victory.
Dozier also homered for the third time in six games on his 28th birthday and has hit safely in seven in a row.
"He's been swinging the bat well," manager Paul Molitor said.
May (2-3, 5.40) will try to lead Minnesota to its fourth straight home win and ninth in 10 games there by rebounding from an 8-2 loss in Cleveland on Sunday. The right-hander gave up a season-worst six runs in four innings after going 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA in his prior four outings.
May is 2-1 with a 2.60 ERA in his last three home starts and will see Texas for the first time.
In his first matchup, May will try to get through six innings for just the second time this season and first time in four starts.
"That's something that's been frustrating me (more) than anything is looking out in the bullpen and seeing a guy warm up in the fourth, fifth, sixth every single time I pitch," May said. "I don't see myself as that guy."
Torii Hunter is the only Minnesota regular to have faced Colome, going 0 for 3. The Twins outfielder is batting .316 with two homers in a nine-game hit streak against Tampa Bay.
Joe Mauer, who went 2 for 4 on Friday, is now hitting .372 in 51 career contests versus the Rays, his highest average against any AL opponent. He's batting .414 in a seven-game hit streak in the series.
Trevor Plouffe has reached base safely in 24 consecutive contests after going 1 for 4 on Friday. He's batting .344 in an eight-game hit streak against Tampa Bay.
