Preview: Brewers (12-23) at Mets (20-14)
Game: 1
Venue: Citi Field
Date: May 15, 2015 7:10 PM EDT
The New York Mets have often used their pitching to overcome inconsistent hitting but couldn't keep that trend going in the final four games of their road trip.
Bartolo Colon looks to become baseball's first seven-game winner as the Mets try to rebound in their return home Friday night against the Milwaukee Brewers, owners of one of the game's meekest lineups.
The Mets won 20 of 31 despite ranking 21st or worse in the majors with 3.87 runs per game, a .239 average, a .356 slugging percentage and a .305 on-base percentage. In that period, their rotation had an MLB-leading 2.99 ERA and they were second overall with a 2.86 mark.
New York had a 1.16 ERA in its first seven games this month but couldn't maintain that dominance beginning with Colon's latest outing Sunday. The right-hander gave up four runs in six-plus innings of a 7-4 win in Philadelphia.
That victory put Colon (6-1, 3.30 ERA) in a tie with Seattle's Felix Hernandez for the MLB wins lead. He also extended his streak of innings without a walk to 40 1-3, leaving him 7 1-3 shy of matching Brett Saberhagen's franchise record from 1994.
The rest of the Mets pitchers weren't so fortunate in a four-game sweep to the Chicago Cubs, posting a 4.45 ERA while the lineup batted .214 with 10 runs. New York (20-15) had 10 hits in Thursday's finale but blew a four-run lead in a 6-5 loss.
Anthony Recker hit two homers but his passed ball in the seventh allowed the go-ahead run to score. Michael Cuddyer went 1 for 12 in the final three games, dropping his average to .233.
"To be honest, that's why some of those big guys are out there. This is when they need to step up," manager Terry Collins told MLB's official website.
The Mets, who are 13-3 at home, will get to face a team that has one of baseball's lowest batting averages (.228) and on-base percentages (.285). The Brewers (12-23), averaging 3.8 runs to the Mets' 3.7, showed some promise by hitting .286 and scoring 31 runs while winning three of four.
They then totaled four runs and 10 hits in back-to-back losses to the Chicago White Sox, falling 4-2 on Wednesday.
Colon is facing Milwaukee for the second time since the end of 2002. He won 6-1 in his latest matchup June 5, 2013, while with Oakland.
Craig Counsell, who is 5-5 since taking over for Ron Roenicke, will experience his first road trip as a manager with this 10-game trek.
"I love going to New York," Counsell said. "It's a big-game atmosphere every game. It's a fun place to go."
Kyle Lohse (2-4, 7.03) will try to kick the trip off by earning his first road win over the Mets after going 0-4 with a 6.08 ERA in his first seven starts.
The right-hander is 0-2 with a 6.92 ERA in two road outings this season and failed to last beyond the fifth inning in each of his two on the homestand while totaling 210 pitches. Lohse, though, beat the Cubs 12-4 on Saturday after giving up four runs and striking out seven.
Aramis Ramirez may return to the Brewers' lineup after missing six games due to back stiffness, and the Mets are hoping Juan Lagares can come back this weekend from a strained muscle on his right side.
The Brewers have won 12 of their last 15 visits to Citi Field.
