Preview: Padres (17-16) at Mariners (14-17)
    Game: 1
    Venue: Safeco Field
    Date: May 12, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

After adding the league's top home run hitter to a largely unchanged 87-win team, the Seattle Mariners hoped for better than a sub-.500 record nearly two weeks into May.

With continued improvement from their rotation, that shouldn't take long to turn around.

James Paxton is next in line for the Mariners, who open a two-game series Tuesday night with the visiting San Diego Padres.

Seattle's staff has produced a 2.84 ERA over its last six starts, striking out 37 batters in 38 innings. That effort proved insufficient in one-run losses to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday and Thursday, but the bats caught up over the weekend as the Mariners (14-17) totaled 15 runs in sweeping three games from Oakland.

"To bounce back after tough losses in Los Angeles, I though that was critical this homestand," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "It shows the resiliency of this club. There's a lot of baseball to be played and, I say it all the time, talent will play out.

"Talent will come to the top. I believe we have enough talent to be a winner."

Nelson Cruz is doing his part. The slugging outfielder leads the majors with 14 home runs and although Cruz has not gone deep in his last five games, he is 7 for 19 in that span.

Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager have also excelled lately, combining to hit .333 (13 for 39) with eight runs and seven RBIs in the past five. Both infielders drove in a run Sunday to support Felix Hernandez, who pitched seven innings and allowed two runs in a 4-3 victory.

Paxton (0-2, 5.08 ERA) also surrendered two runs through seven last Tuesday - his second straight start with that line after allowing 16 runs over 13 2-3 innings in his previous three starts.

He'll oppose another pitcher enjoying an upswing, San Diego's Ian Kennedy (2-1, 5.03). Kennedy had one of the worst outings of his career by allowing eight runs in 4 1-3 innings against the Dodgers on April 25, but has a 2.08 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in his last two appearances.

"Ian has been a proven major league starter as far as durability," manager Bud Black told MLB's official website. "So hopefully when we look up at the end of the year, at maybe 29, 30 starts, the numbers will be Ian Kennedy-like."

Kennedy's numbers on the road have been considerably better than at home dating to the midway point of last season. He's posted a 2.65 ERA in nine starts away from Petco Park since July 7, while his home ERA in that stretch is 4.70.

The Padres (17-16) have won three of their last seven games despite getting shut out on three occasions. Andrew Cashner was the latest recipient of a tough-luck loss, falling 2-1 to Arizona on Sunday to give the Diamondbacks a series split.

Only Pittsburgh has been shut out as many times as San Diego (five).

Paxton hasn't faced San Diego and Kennedy has never pitched against Seattle - the Mariners are the only team he's never faced - but Seth Smith is 6 for 20 with a homer and four doubles against the Padres right-hander.

Preview: Nationals (18-15) at Diamondbacks (14-17)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Chase Field
      Date: May 12, 2015 9:40 PM EDT

The Washington Nationals were relieved after learning Stephen Strasburg's injury scare didn't require anything more than a trip to the chiropractor.

With a red-hot offense backing him, Washington hopes he can turn around a disappointing start to 2015.

Strasburg tries to guide the Nationals to a sixth straight win Tuesday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Washington pushed Strasburg (2-3, 4.73 ERA) back an extra day after he left last Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Miami after three innings with a shoulder ailment. Strasburg visited a chiropractor and said he felt fine following a bullpen session Saturday.

"All indications are that he is feeling much better," manager Matt Williams told MLB's official website. "That's a positive sign for us."

Strasburg's performance has left much to be desired, however, and he hasn't been the strikeout artist of years past. The right-hander entered the year averaging 10.27 strikeouts per nine innings for his career but is down to a career-low 8.91 this season. Strasburg's stuff may not be as overpowering as it was - his 15.9 swing-and-miss percentage is nine percent less than his previous low for a season.

He's also been the victim of some bad luck, with opposing batters hitting a major league-high .398 on balls in play.

Strasburg is 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA in six career starts versus Arizona, splitting two matchups last season. He's also 5-1 in his last seven road starts.

The Nationals (18-15) have backed him with one or no runs in three of his six starts, though that won't be an issue Tuesday if Washington's recent offensive surge is any indication. They won Monday's series opener 11-1, scoring 10 runs in the first two innings, and have taken 15 of the last 18 meetings. Washington had 15 hits and was 6 for 12 with runners in scoring position, improving to 18 for 39 during a five-game winning streak.

"We've had some games where we've created some opportunities early and got one, maybe two," manager Matt Williams said. "Tonight we got big hits."

Yunel Escobar went 5 for 5 for the second time in seven games and is batting .577 in that span. Denard Span and Ryan Zimmerman homered, and Zimmerman has eight RBIs in his last three.

Wilson Ramos extended his hitting streak to 14 games and improved to 7 for his last 11 with runners in scoring position, including 4 for his last 4.

Bryce Harper didn't have an extra-base hit for the first time during a five-game hitting streak, but drove in a run. He has 14 RBIs while going 11 for 20 in the streak.

Arizona (14-17) was held to six hits, with Jordan Pacheco hitting a sixth-inning homer after entering for Paul Goldschmidt at first base in the fourth. The Diamondbacks have dropped seven of 11 at home.

"A tough one to watch," manager Chip Hale said. "I feel bad for the fans. It was over early, but it just counts for one loss."

Goldschmidt, who has a team-high 27 RBIs while starting all 31 games, is 5 for 12 with two doubles versus Strasburg.

Rubby De La Rosa (3-2, 4.38) comes in with a 10-inning scoreless streak and has been stellar in his last two home outings, limiting Pittsburgh and San Diego to one run and seven hits over 14 innings with 15 strikeouts. He has never faced Washington.

Preview: Red Sox (15-17) at Athletics (12-22)
        Game: 2
        Venue: O.co Coliseum
        Date: May 12, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

Boston Red Sox starter Justin Masterson has never won in six starts at Oakland.

The Athletics, however, can't feel too confident since they've lost six in a row and have dropped five straight starts by Drew Pomeranz.

Both pitchers look to buck those trends when this three-game set continues Tuesday night.

Masterson (2-1, 5.18 ERA) is 0-5 with a 7.02 ERA as a starter in Oakland, losing his first five outings there before he went seven innings on opening day last year for Cleveland in a 2-0 victory.

The right-hander has fared well against a number of Athletics regulars, including Billy Butler (.209 against him), Josh Reddick (.217) and Eric Sogard (2 for 11).

Boston (15-17) has lost three straight starts by Masterson. In last Wednesday's 5-3 defeat to Tampa Bay, he gave up four runs over a season-low 4 1-3 innings.

Oakland (12-22) is enduring its longest losing streak since a nine-game skid May 22-June 1, 2012. It's very possible it won't end Tuesday since Pomeranz (1-3, 5.12) is 0-3 with a 6.57 ERA in his last five outings.

The left-hander gave up six runs over a season-low 4 1-3 innings in Thursday's 6-5 defeat at Minnesota, matching a career high with five walks.

Pomeranz has never started against the Red Sox, making two relief appearances against them. The Boston hitter he has faced the most is Shane Victorino, who is 4 for 6 against him.

Victorino went 0 for 4 on Monday after he was activated from the 15-day disabled list after being out since April 22 with a strained right hamstring.

The Athletics continued their woes in close games with a 5-4, 11-inning defeat in the series opener. They are 0-6 in extra innings, 1-11 in one-run games and one of two teams yet to win a game in their final at-bat along with Cleveland.

'It's the same story here," manager Bob Melvin said. "It's getting tough to explain. It seems like we've played this game so many times this year that it's a little bit surreal. But we have to come out tomorrow and try to break through.'

Boston's hero was a familiar face in the Bay Area, as former San Francisco slugger Pablo Sandoval homered leading off the 11th inning for the eventual winning run. Sandoval made his return to the region a triumphant one after receiving his latest World Series ring from Giants manager Bruce Bochy the night before at the hotel.

'It's exciting and emotional getting the ring and hitting the homer to win the game,' Sandoval said. 'It was a big day for me.'

The Red Sox can match a season-high three-game win streak from April 9-11. They saw a familiar face Monday when Oakland reliever Edward Mujica made his club debut with a perfect inning two days after he was dealt by Boston to the Athletics.

Oakland slugger Ike Davis' status is uncertain after he left in the bottom of the fourth with a strained left quadriceps muscle.

Center fielder Coco Crisp is hitless in 21 at_bats to begin 2015.

These teams have the AL's worst records in May, with Boston at 3-7 and Oakland at 3-8.

Preview: Marlins (15-18) at Dodgers (21-10)
          Game: 2
          Venue: Dodger Stadium
          Date: May 12, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

A year after the Los Angeles Dodgers hoped Dan Haren would strengthen the back end of their rotation, he's become the Miami Marlins' top arm.

Haren makes his return to Los Angeles looking for his longest winning streak in almost four years Tuesday night.

Haren (4-1, 2.68 ERA) signed a one-year, $10-million contract with the Dodgers prior to last season and he went 13-11 with a 4.02 ERA, while his 186 innings triggered an option for a second year at $11 million.

The Dodgers instead sent him and Dee Gordon to Miami in a seven-player trade in December.

The move is paying off for the Marlins (15-18) - Gordon leads the majors with a .425 average while Haren tops the team in wins, ERA and WHIP (0.92) after putting to rest reports he would retire if traded away from the West Coast.

"This guy's prepared. He studies hitters," manager Mike Redmond told MLB's official website. "The four days he's not pitching, he's figuring out how to beat the next team. He's a great competitor. I've seen that really his whole career. He just doesn't make a ton of mistakes out over the plate. He doesn't give in."

Haren has won his last three starts with a 2.00 ERA, and he last won four straight with the Los Angeles Angels from June 24-July 10, 2011.

He yielded two runs and eight hits in seven innings Thursday and also helped himself with two hits, including a two-run double in a 7-2 win at San Francisco.

"I just try to do my thing," Haren said. "I haven't struck out too many guys this year. I've been fortunate with the great defense that we have to turn balls in play into outs."

Haren is 2-3 with a 3.49 ERA in eight starts as a visitor to Chavez Ravine, losing his last visit with Washington on May 14, 2013.

Miami has dropped six of nine following a 9-1 stretch, and closer Steve Cishek is having major problems. He served up a three-run walkoff homer to Scott Van Slyke in Monday's 5-3 loss to the Dodgers (21-10), one day after giving up two runs in the ninth of a 3-2 loss at San Francisco.

Cishek's four blown saves are the most in the majors and match his total in 43 opportunities last year.

'It's just very disappointing. All I needed to do was get the last three outs of the game, but I continued to let the team down,' Cishek said. 'I mean, this is about as low as I can get."

Gordon is also looking for a bounce-back performance after going 0 for 4 with a walk to end his 13-game hitting streak. He was also thrown out trying to steal second by Yasmani Grandal.

Grandal, who went 0 for 2 with two walks Monday, is 13 for 21 with three homers and 11 RBIs in his last seven games to raise his season average 120 points to .299.

The Dodgers own the best home record in the majors at 14-2 after winning five straight there.

Van Slyke has helped by going 13 for 27 with two homers, five doubles and 12 RBIs in his past nine home games after collecting three hits Monday.

Mike Bolsinger (0-0, 1.59) is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City for a spot start. The right-hander allowed one run and five hits with five strikeouts in 5 2-3 innings of a 3-2 loss in 10 at San Francisco in his only game this season April 23.

He went 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in 19 innings over four starts with Oklahoma City.

            Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Brad Crawford of Saturdaydownsouth.com ranked the six best QBs in the SEC:

            6) Kyle Allen, Texas A&M-- Could get competition from Kyler Murray.

            5) Brice Ramsey, Georgia-- Brian Schottenheimer is Dawgs' new play-caller.

            4) Jeremy Johnson, Auburn-- Should fit right in with Malzahn's offense.

            3) Joshua Dobbs, Tennessee-- Vols are a team on the rise.

            2) Brandon Allen, Arkansas-- This will be his third year as starting QB.

            1) Dak Prescott, Mississippi State-- Should have a big senior season.

            **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

            13) Tom Brady gets four games off, Patriots lose two draft picks, one in first round, they get fined $1M, but this isn't going away quickly-- wouldn't be too surprised if this case wound up in the US Supreme Court.

            12) I guess Robert Kraft won't be getting an apology from the league.

            11) These are the Patriots' first four games:
            -- Week 1: Steelers
            -- Week 2: at Buffalo
            -- Week 3: Jacksonville
            -- Week 4: bye
            -- Week 5: at Dallas

            10) Only a conspiracy theorist would point out that the Patriots' fifth game, the one Brady is now expected to return for, is in Indianaapolis, against the Colts, on a Sunday night on NBC, against the same team that was involved in the DeflateGate game in January. Surely a coincidence.

            9) Joe Sheehan of Sports Illustrated pointed out something; Brady doesn't get paid for four weeks, Patriots get fined $1M, but Brady makes a lot more than that in four weeks of play, so the Patriots actually make money on the deal.

            Elsewhere in the world.........
            8) Hooters Casino in Las Vegas sold for $53.8M last week; it had the smallest sportsbook I've been in- new owners are expected to change the name, but the Hooters restaurant inside the casino is expected to stay.

            7) Houston Astros promoted their big shortstop prospect Carlos Correa to AAA, which makes you think he might get to Houston before starting SS Jed Lowrie's thumb heals sometime in July.

            6) Disappointed to hear Monday that CBS cancelled the TV show CSI after 15 years on the air- its one of my two favorite TV shows of all-time.

            5) Baltimore Orioles scored in first inning in eight of 11 games in Camden Yards this season, only four of 19 games away from home.

            4) Every day this week is the same backwards as it is forward; for example.....
            5/10/15 is 51015 backwards.....5/11/15 is 51115 and so on.......

            3) Rumor has Florida State as the favorite to land Everett Golson as its new QB, as they try and replace Jameis Winston.

            2) If you're wodering why the Rockets were fouling DeAndre Jordan all the time in Game 4, this is why: Clippers are +76 with Jordan on the floor, -8 when he is off the floor in their four games with Houston so far. Rockets were hoping 18 missed foul shots would get Doc Rivers to sit Jordan, but it did not.

            1) NCAA has too darn many rules; Jim Harbaugh donated a signed helmet, jersey to a family who lost a child to suicide- the items were auctioned off to help fund a scholarship in the young person's name-- but that is a secondary violation of NCAA rules, a minor violation but it against the rules and that is pretty damn sad. Shrink the rulebook, people.

                        Tuesday's Tip Sheet

                        May 12, 2015

                        Who’s Hot:

Nationals – In late April, Washington was riding a six-game losing streak and sat near the bottom of the NL East. All of the sudden, the Nats have turned things around by winning 11 of their past 13 games, including five straight following Monday’s 11-1 rout of Arizona. Washington has won six of its previous seven contests away from Nationals Park, while cashing the ‘over’ in each of its past five games overall.

Stephen Strasburg has won just one of three road starts this season after Washington compiled an 8-8 record in 2014 when the right-hander started on the highway. Strasburg performed well in the desert in his career, winning two of his last three starts, even though he dropped a 3-1 decision at Chase Field last season.

Dodgers – Los Angeles is turning it on right now after beating Miami with a walk-off homer last night to improve to 21-10. The Dodgers have won five straight games at Chavez Ravine, while owning a 12-3 record in its past 15 games in the favorite role. Don Mattingly’s team has opened up a five-game advantage over the Padres in the NL West heading into tonight’s action, while the Dodgers are 4-1 to the ‘over’ in Game 2’s of a series this season.

Los Angeles sends out right-hander Mike Bolsinger to the mound, as he picked up a no-decision in his Dodgers’ debut on August 23 in a 3-2 loss to San Francisco in spite of allowing one earned run in 5.2 innings of work. Dating back to last season, Bolsinger is winless in his last eight starts, which includes an 0-7 team record with Arizona since April 29, 2014.

                        Who’s Not:

Rockies – Colorado began the season on fire at 7-2, but that seems like a long time ago as Walt Weiss’ is currently on a 4-15 slide the last 19 games. The Rockies have dropped nine straight, including a 1-8 record away from Coors Field since beginning the campaign with an incredible 6-0 road record. Seven times during this nine-game skid, Colorado has allowed at least five runs, as the ‘over’ has cashed six times in this stretch.

Kyle Kendrick tossed seven scoreless innings on opening day at Milwaukee in a 10-0 victory. Since then, the Rockies are 1-4 in Kendrick’s last five starts, while allowing at least six earned runs four times. The ‘over’ has profited in Kendrick’s outings, going 5-1, including a perfect 4-0 mark away from Coors Field.

Athletics – Is the “Moneyball” concept working in the East Bay anymore? Oakland has lost six consecutive games, including a 5-4 defeat to Boston on Monday night in extra innings. To make matters worse, the A’s have dropped eight of their last nine games at O.Co Coliseum, while hitting the ‘over’ in 12 consecutive home contests.

Drew Pomeranz is winless in his last five starts for Oakland after not allowing a run in seven innings of his season debut against Seattle. The Athletics’ southpaw hasn’t lasted past the fifth inning in his past five trips to the mound, but four of those losses came on the road, while each of his last three have come by one run each.

                        San Diego at Seattle

                        Total Notes - Teams

Oakland has watched the ‘over’ go 24-8 (75%) this season, which includes a 13-1 record at home. The Athletics host the Red Sox on Tuesday and the total is set at 8 runs.

                              Tuesday, May 12

Cavaliers got 14-13 points off bench from JR Smith in splitting pair in Chicago- James was 10-30 in Game 4 but hit winning shot after coach Blatt almost screwed things up by trying to call timeout he didn't have. Bulls shot 36% from floor, led by 11 but lost chance to go up 3-1 in the series. Bulls won 10 of last 14 games overall with six of last nine staying under total; Chicago made 10-18 from arc in Game 1, only 22-62 in last three games. Cleveland had only four fast break points in Game 4.

Heart-check time for the Rockets, who lost by 25-33 points in pathetic showing in LA over weekend; do they want to keep playing? Didn't look like they did while being outscored 43-25 in third quarter Sunday, with Clippers blowing them out badly. Will Houston keep fouling Jordan, who is +76 in this series (Rockets are +8 when he is off floor)? This game is a simple one; how badly does Houston want to compete, if at all? Seven of last eight Clipper games went over the total.

Chicago’s Derrick Rose banked in the decisive shot in Game 3 and Cleveland’s LeBron James answered with the game-winner in Game 4 to tie the series at two games apiece.

James sprained his left ankle in Sunday’s game but won’t miss any time while point guard Kyrie Irving continues to be hampered by injuries – first a sore right foot and then being diagnosed on Monday with tendinitis in his left knee. Irving plans to play despite being an inferior shadow of himself while the Bulls will likely be without power forward Pau Gasol (hamstring) for the second consecutive contest. Chicago missed a big opportunity to take a 3-1 lead when it struggled in the fourth quarter and Cleveland rallied for the victory. “We just got to be a lot smarter with the lead,” Bulls forward Taj Gibson told reporters. “Going into the fourth we had a good margin. We just blew it.”

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Cavs as 5-point faves but have since moved that number to -5.5.

INJURY REPORT: Chicago - T. Gibson (questionable), P. Gasol (doubtful). Cleveland - K. Irving (probable), L. James (probable), K. Love (out for playoffs), A. Varejo (out for playoffs).

ABOUT THE BULLS: Chicago led by 11 points late in the third quarter of Game 4 before falling apart on the offensive end and letting the game get away. “Just too many duds for offensive possessions,” forward Mike Dunleavy told reporters. “We’ve had issues with that all year. Especially here in the playoffs, our ball movement has been slowing us down, and we kind of get stagnant.” One guy thriving is Rose, who has scored 30 or more points in back-to-back games and is averaging 25 points in the series.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: Irving is 5-for-23 shooting over the last two games, and his 30-point performance in Game 1 seems like it happened ages ago. “I’d rather give 30 percent, 40 percent rather than give none at all,” Irving told reporters. “I just literally can’t do it. I can’t sit on the bench and be hurt and be OK with that. And still, I still know I can be effective.” James expressed surprise that he was able to finish Game 4 – a contest that concluded with him overruling coach David Blatt’s plan to have him in-bound the ball on the play and instead receiving the ball and knocking down the decisive shot.

                                TRENDS:

Los Angeles Clippers at Houston Rockets (+2.5, 219)
                                Clippers lead series 3-1

The Los Angeles Clippers look to advance to the Western Conference finals for the first time in franchise history when they visit the Houston Rockets in Game 5 of the semifinal series. Los Angeles has pounded Houston by an average of 29 points over the last two games to take a 3-1 lead while thoroughly demoralizing the Rockets.

Houston has no answer on the defensive end as the Clippers are averaging 119.5 points in the series after posting a 128-95 victory on Sunday. “This is the ultimate adversity right now,” Rockets guard James Harden told reporters. “We’ve got Game 5 back at the house and it’s really win or go home. Our backs are against the wall and we’ve got to show up.” The Clippers are the first team to win back-to-back games in a playoff series by at least 25 points since the Los Angeles Lakers in 2001 and are rolling on all cylinders. “I think we realize as a team what we’re capable of when we play the right way,” power forward Blake Griffin told reporters. “It’s just a matter of coming out and playing the right way.”

LINE HISTORY: The Rockets opened -1 but have hopped the fence to +2.5 as of this writing.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS: The hamstring injury to Chris Paul was thought to be a deterrent to Los Angeles winning the series, and it split two games without him before dominating the two he has played. Paul has only had to play an average of 24.5 minutes due to the two routs and now coach Doc Rivers is less than concerned with his point guard’s health and more interested in his team continuing its strong play. “I think right now, honestly, they just have great focus,” Rivers told reporters. “They’re not thinking about a lot of stuff, but doing their jobs and trying to win the game.”

ABOUT THE ROCKETS: Standout guard James Harden scored a quiet 21 points in Game 4 and has failed to be a difference-maker despite a 24.5 average in the four games. The runner-up in MVP balloting has been bottled up for long stretches by the Clippers and is growing more and more frustrated as the scores get out of hand. “We’re not really moving,” Harden told reporters. “We’re not really moving on the offensive end. We’re pretty much stagnant, so it makes it easier for them to kind of load up and play their normal defense.”

                                TRENDS:

*Over is 10-2 in Rockets last 12 home games.
*Over is 5-0 in Clippers last 5 overall.
*Clippers are 16-4-1 ATS in their last 21 road games.
