    GAME # 2 OF DOUBLEHEADER

Preview: Reds (14-14) at White Sox (10-15)
    Game: 2
    Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
    Date: May 09, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

Carlos Rodon's highly anticipated first major league start will take place as scheduled Saturday but will now serve as the finale to a doubleheader after the Chicago White Sox's series opener against the Cincinnati Reds was rained out.

In the opener, Reds right-hander Johnny Cueto will try to continue his success in interleague play while Joey Votto serves a one-game suspension.

Rodon, the No. 3 pick in the 2014 draft, is getting a start because Jeff Samardzija is serving a five-game suspension for his part in a brawl April 23 against Kansas City. Even if the prized prospect pitches well, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said the left-hander might still head back to the bullpen.

"There's no guarantees that he's gonna stay in the rotation even if he has a good game," Ventura said. "I expect him to have a good game. The way it sits right now he would still be back in the bullpen and getting us some innings there."

Rodon (0-0, 2.84 ERA) has made three appearances since being called up from the minors April 20 and tossed three scoreless innings in his latest one last Saturday in Minnesota.

First, the White Sox (10-15) will try to hand Cueto a rare loss against an AL opponent. The Reds starter is 12-5 with a 2.48 ERA in 23 career interleague starts, giving him the most wins by an NL pitcher since the start of the 2008 season. He did not get a decision in his only start against the White Sox on June 20, 2009.

Cueto (2-3, 2.72) is coming off his least effective outing of this season, a 5-0 loss in Atlanta on Sunday. He gave up five runs - three in the first inning - and nine hits in a season-low six innings after recording a 1.95 ERA in his first five starts.

Votto will miss the first game because he made contact with home plate umpire Chris Conroy in Thursday's 3-0 win in Pittsburgh. The first baseman is batting .311 with seven homers and 18 RBIs in 28 games.

"I want to be back as soon as possible to help the team, and missing ... the fewer the games, the better," he said. "But I do feel like I have to pay a price for my actions."

Zack Cozart, batting .304 with five homers and 12 RBIs, might end a three-game absence for Cincinnati (14-14) because of wrist and hand injuries. Devin Mesoraco (hip) could return to the starting lineup for the first time since April 11 but likely as a designated hitter.

Jason Marquis (3-1, 5.22), who has been the beneficiary of a combined 28 runs of support in his prior three starts, will seek a fourth consecutive win in the finale.

The veteran right-hander gave up three runs in 6 1-3 innings in an 8-4 win in Atlanta last Saturday. He's 2-1 with a 9.00 ERA in four career starts versus the White Sox with the most recent June 21, 2008.

In the opening game, Chicago right-hander Hector Noesi (0-3, 6.75) will seek to snap a six-start losing streak that dates to Sept. 14. He gave up five runs in 4 1-3 innings in a 5-3 loss at Minnesota last Saturday and will make his first start against Cincinnati.

He was 1-1 with a 2.65 ERA in three interleague starts in 2014.

Preview: Cubs (14-13) at Brewers (9-20)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Miller Park
      Date: May 09, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

The Chicago Cubs might be off to a solid start, but they still have a ways to go to be consistently successful.

Nonetheless, the visiting Cubs look to build on their latest victory Saturday night against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Anthony Rizzo hit one of Chicago's four home runs and rookie Addison Russell extended his hitting streak to 11 games - the longest by a Cubs rookie since Mike Fontenot's 12-gamer in 2007 - during Friday's 7-6 victory. Though the Cubs (15-13) have won two of three following a four-game losing streak, they nearly blew a four-run lead after Ryan Braun belted a three-run homer in the ninth.

"It's nice to walk away with a win,' winning pitcher Jason Hammel said. 'I guess they're not always pretty.'

Expected to be improved after five straight losing seasons, the Cubs aren't without their issues.

A bullpen that posted a 2.70 ERA while Chicago won 12 of the first 19 games, has a 7.36 ERA during a 3-6 stretch.

The Cubs struck out a major league-leading 1,477 times in 2014, and after fanning 15 times Friday, again lead all teams with 278 this season. They have struck out 52 while splitting four games with Milwaukee (9-21).

Rizzo, however, has fanned six times while batting .417 with five home runs and 11 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak against the Brewers.

He's 10 for 21 with a home run and two doubles against Kyle Lohse (1-4, 7.01 ERA), who hardly looks like the same guy who tossed a three-hitter during a 9-0 home rout of the Cubs on June 1.

The right-hander has the third-highest ERA among all major league starters and his nine home runs allowed are among the most in baseball. Lohse allowed three runs and walked three while throwing 104 pitches over five innings to not factor in the decision of Monday's 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Craig Counsell's debut as a manager.

The Brewers are 2-3 since Counsell replaced Ron Roenicke and have allowed 21 runs while dropping two in a row.

Milwaukee could have a good chance for some success against Travis Wood (2-1, 4.40), who gave up 12 runs and 17 hits over 8 1-3 innings to lose both starts at Miller Park last season.

The left-hander was almost as bad during Monday's 10-9 loss at St. Louis when he yielded four of his six runs on a grand slam in the bottom of first after his teammates scored five in the top of the inning. Wood, who lasted five-plus innings, is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA in three road starts.

"Your team puts up five in the first, you can't give it back,' he said. 'That's all on me.'

Braun is batting .333 with two homers and four doubles in 27 at_bats versus Wood. Khris Davis, who homered for one of his four hits Friday, is 3 for 8 with a home run and double against him.

Counsell expects Carlos Gomez to play Saturday after missing the last two games with a mild right hip flexor injury.

"We just want him to take it easy," Counsell told MLB's official website. "The long term is important with him, for sure."

It's uncertain when teammate Aramis Ramirez will see action after he was scratched Friday due to lower-back tightness.

Preview: Astros (19-10) at Angels (13-16)
        Game: 3
        Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
        Date: May 09, 2015 9:05 PM EDT

Perhaps Dallas Keuchel will provide the answer the Houston Astros need to bounce back from their latest defeat.

Looking to help the visiting Astros avoid a fifth loss in six contests, the left-hander tries to extend his undefeated streak to 12 games Saturday night against the Los Angeles Angels.

Owner of the lowest ERA among major league starters, Keuchel (3-0, 0.80 ERA) has allowed four runs, 21 hits and no homers over 45 innings in his six starts.

"He's playing unbelievable," teammate Chad Qualls said. "To watch him pitch is pretty fun.'

The Astros had won 10 straight starts by Keuchel before Monday's 2-1 to Texas also ended the club's 10-game winning streak.

Keuchel, who is 5-0 with a 1.34 ERA over those 11 starts since losing to the New York Yankees on Aug. 21, gave up a run and struck out eight in eight innings against the Rangers - his third consecutive outing of at least eight innings.

"That type of outing is not uncommon for Dallas," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said.

Keuchel, who despite a 3.98 ERA is 3-0 in five starts at Anaheim, allowed two hits and struck out seven in six innings of a 4-0 home win over the Angels (14-16) on April 18.

'That's a talented lineup there, and I was lucky to get out of there with six innings,' Keuchel said.

The Astros (19-11) have held Los Angeles to four total runs while splitting the first two of this four-game set.

Jered Weaver tossed a six-hitter and struck out six without a walk to win his first game and rookie catcher Carlos Perez had an RBI as the Angels did all their scoring in the fifth inning of Friday's 2-0 victory.

'Weaver did a good job of really never giving in and never throwing the same pitch at the same speed for nine innings,' Hinch said. 'We didn't really have a counterpunch for him.'

Los Angeles has won three of four since losing four in a row.

It will hand the ball to Matt Shoemaker (2-2, 5.40), who has allowed three runs in four of his five starts. He did so via three solo homers and struck out 10 over 7 1-3 innings of a 3-2 loss to Seattle on Monday.

'I was very encouraged (Monday) until the seventh inning, but those few mistakes can cost you the game,' Shoemaker said. 'That's the frustrating part, when you're working that hard to execute pitches.

The right-hander allowed two runs and struck out seven in six innings of a 5-2 home victory over Houston on July 3.

Teammate David Freese is 3 for 6 in the series, and 8 for 14 with a double and a home run versus Keuchel. Mike Trout, however, is 5 for 22 with no extra-base hits and nine strikeouts against him.

Houston averaged 7.6 runs and hit .291 during that 10-game winning streak but has totaled eight while batting .167 to go 1-4 since.

Jose Altuve had three hits Friday after he went 2 for 17 in the previous five contests. He's 3 for 5 with a double against Shoemaker.

The highly touted Perez, who hit a game-winning homer in his major league debut Tuesday, is 3 for 10 in three contests.

Preview: Dodgers (19-10) at Rockies (11-16)
          Game: 2
          Venue: Coors Field
          Date: May 09, 2015 8:10 PM EDT

It may not be surprising that Clayton Kershaw has a higher ERA at Coors Field than at any other current NL ballpark.

That hasn't stopped him from beating the Colorado Rockies there.

The Los Angeles Dodgers ace has won his last four starts in Denver and six in a row against the Rockies, who have dropped eight straight heading into Saturday night's matchup.

Kershaw (1-2, 3.72 ERA) is 7-3 with a 4.58 ERA in 15 starts at Coors, posting a 2.00 ERA in winning his last four there. He has a 1.62 ERA during his overall win streak over the Rockies, which includes a 7-3 home victory April 17, when he gave up three runs - one earned - and struck out 12 over six innings.

The left-hander makes his fourth bid for his 100th career regular-season win after going 0-1 with a 3.10 ERA in his last three starts. He gave up three runs over 7 1-3 innings in Monday's 4-3 defeat at Milwaukee.

Kershaw, second in the majors with 51 strikeouts, has faced Troy Tulowitzki more than all but two hitters. The Colorado stalwart is a .255 hitter against him.

Carlos Gonzalez hasn't fared as well, going 5 for 30 with 17 strikeouts, while Wilin Rosario - called up from the minors Friday - is 7 for 23 off Kershaw.

The Rockies (11-16) are seeking to avoid their first nine-game losing streak since Sept. 15-23, 2012. Their ERA is 8.95 during this slide with starters losing every decision; the last Colorado starter to win - Tyler Matzek - was demoted to the minors Friday.

Los Angeles (19-10) seeks an eighth straight victory over Colorado after winning 2-1 in Friday's rain-shortened, three-game series opener that was called in the top of the sixth inning.

"This is a weird day," manager Don Mattingly said. "Sounds like they've been having a weird week, listening to Walt (Rockies manager Walt Weiss)."

The Dodgers face a potentially formidable mound opponent in Jorge De La Rosa, limited to three starts this year due to a stint on the disabled list with a strained left groin.

Though De La Rosa (0-2, 9.00) has lost more to the Dodgers than any opponent with 10 defeats, he is 5-2 with a 4.20 ERA in his last seven starts against them. The two losses, however, have come in the only starts in that span when he has opposed Kershaw.

Adrian Gonzalez is a .349 hitter off De La Rosa with three homers in 43 at_bats while Juan Uribe (.226) and Andre Ethier (.136) have struggled in this matchup.

The left-hander allowed three runs over five innings in last Saturday's 4-2 loss at San Diego.

Gonzalez continues to lead the majors with a 1.166 OPS and drove in his team-best 25th run Friday. Rookie Joc Pederson is not far behind with a 1.057 OPS for the Dodgers, who have won seven of nine.

Colorado's Nick Hundley is batting .432 during an 11-game hitting streak. He's 12 for 32 at home on the season.

Preview: Padres (16-15) at Diamondbacks (13-15)
            Game: 3
            Venue: Chase Field
            Date: May 09, 2015 8:10 PM EDT

The San Diego Padres have been feast or famine at the plate lately, and their latest big effort came without Yonder Alonso.

The Padres look for Wil Myers and Will Venable to pick up the slack again Saturday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

San Diego (16-15) has won five of the last eight games, a stretch dictated by its bats. The Padres are hitting .315 and averaging 8.2 runs in those victories compared to .098 while being shut out in each of those defeats.

They were three-hit in an 11-0 loss to open this series but bounced back with two homers among their 12 hits in a 6-5 victory Friday after Alonso was put on the disabled list with a deep shoulder bruise.

He leads the team with a .333 average, but Myers moved from center field to first base for the first time Friday in replacing Alonso. That didn't seem to be a problem as he collected a season-high four hits with one double and a solo homer.

He's 7 for 14 over the past three games, and that includes going 0 for 3 in the series opener.

Venable filled in for Myers in center and snapped out of his funk Friday, finishing a double shy of the cycle while going 3 for 5 and driving in the go-ahead run in the seventh. He had been 4 for 30 with two homers and four RBIs through his first 19 games after being moved into a reserve outfield role.

"You've got to be patient, and then when the opportunity does come you can't press too much," Venable said. "Everybody wants to play, but the situation is what you make it. We've got three outfielders out there that should be out there, and I understand the situation."

The Padres may need another strong performance at the plate since they're turning to Tyson Ross (1-3, 4.15 ERA), who is 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in his past three starts at Arizona (13-15).

The right-hander is 0-3 with a 4.37 ERA over his last four starts, but he couldn't be blamed for Monday's 2-0 loss at San Francisco. He allowed two runs in seven innings of a pitchers' duel with Madison Bumgarner, who carried a no-hit bid into the seventh.

Ross has had a tough time with Paul Goldschmidt, who has two homers and one triple among his five hits in 16 at_bats against him.

The slugger has been on a tear lately, hitting .467 with 11 RBIs in 10 games after going 6 for 13 with three homers and five RBIs over the past three.

David Peralta had a solo homer of his own Friday, and he's a .364 hitter in 15 career meetings with San Diego.

Chase Anderson (0-1, 3.38) takes the mound, and he's allowed three runs or fewer in four of his five starts. The right-hander is coming off perhaps his best outing yet, scattering two hits and striking out seven in six innings of Sunday's 1-0 loss in 13 to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Anderson has a 4.20 ERA while going 2-1 in three home starts against the Padres. He gave up two runs and eight hits in six innings while not getting a decision in a 3-2 road loss April 15.

Matt Kemp, Jedd Gyorko and Alexi Amarista are a combined 10 for 23 off him.

Preview: Marlins (14-16) at Giants (15-15)
              Game: 3
              Venue: AT&T Park
              Date: May 09, 2015 9:05 PM EDT

Dee Gordon wasn't available to spoil another dominant pitching performance from the San Francisco Giants, but his absence could prove brief.

The Miami Marlins second baseman might get the chance to add to his major league-best average and extend a 12-game hit streak while preventing Madison Bumgarner from winning a third consecutive start Saturday night.

Gordon was forced to sit Friday because of a sore right hamstring suffered in the opener at AT&T Park, a 7-2 victory Thursday. With Gordon and his .437 average on the bench, the Marlins (14-16) produced just three hits in a 6-0 loss.

The Giants (15-15) struck out 10 in their fourth shutout in the last six games, and Casey McGehee provided an early boost with a second-inning grand slam. San Francisco had given up a combined 16 runs and 33 hits in back-to-back defeats.

"His legs are such an important part of his game," general manager Dan Jennings told MLB's official website. "Let's err on the side of caution right now. Let's make sure they're not sore, and give him a day and get him back (Saturday)."

Gordon is batting .560 (28 for 50) during his streak and went 3 for 5 on Thursday. He's hitting .368 in his last eight games in San Francisco but is 3 for 13 in his career against Bumgarner with one hit in his last eight at_bats.

Bumgarner (3-1, 3.03 ERA) enters this game with a 1.25 ERA in his last three starts after putting up a 5.29 mark in his first three. He's yielded one run in 15 1-3 innings in his back-to-back victories and took a no-hitter into the seventh in a 2-0 victory over San Diego on Monday.

The left-hander finished with two hits and one walk allowed in 7 1-3 innings.

"Everything's coming together finally. Delivery feels good. All my stuff feels good. Command, everything," he said.

Bumgarner gave up one run in six innings and fanned seven in his only matchup with the Marlins last season, a 9-1 win July 18. He was 0-2 with a 5.09 ERA in his prior four meetings.

David Phelps (1-0, 3.24) will try to continue his string of effective outings in his first game against San Francisco. The right-hander is 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA in four starts since replacing an ailing Henderson Alvarez in the rotation and gave up two runs in 6 1-3 innings in Monday's 6-4 loss at Washington.

Only one current Giants hitter has faced Phelps, Nori Aoki (1 for 4).

Giancarlo Stanton is 8 for 13 with five doubles and one home run lifetime against Bumgarner, the best performance of any hitter who has faced him at least 11 times.

McGehee, who played for the Marlins last season, was batting .178 before Friday and had gone 8 for 56 with one RBI in his prior 18 contests.

"I've proven I can hit in this league, I've proven I can be productive in this league," McGehee said.

Brandon Belt had four hits Friday and is 12 for 22 in his last six games. He also has at least one double in each of those contests and is one shy of matching Jeff Kent (April 1999) for the longest streak in San Francisco history.

The Giants haven't scored more than six runs in any of their first 30 games, their longest streak since at least 1914.

Preview: Athletics (12-19) at Mariners (12-17)
                Game: 2
                Venue: Safeco Field
                Date: May 09, 2015 9:10 PM EDT

The Oakland Athletics are tied for the AL's worst record against left-handed starters and haven't fared well when the Seattle Mariners' J.A. Happ starts against them.

They will try to bounce back from a third straight loss when they seek to solve Happ and even this three-game road series Saturday night.

Oakland (12-19) is 1-4 against lefty starters to match Chicago's record among AL teams. That's a distinct advantage for Happ (2-1, 3.51 ERA), who is 1-0 with a 1.33 ERA in three starts against the Athletics.

Happ made his Seattle debut in Oakland on April 15, giving up two runs over 6 1-3 innings in a 5-4, 11-inning victory. Billy Butler is 5 for 13 off Happ and Marcus Semien is 4 for 6 with a homer.

Happ yielded one or two runs in each of his first four starts before being tagged for six over six innings Sunday in a 7-6 defeat at Houston.

Seattle (12-17) looks to ride the sudden power surge by Logan Morrison, who has four homers in seven games this month after hitting one in 21 April contests. Morrison batted .197 in the first month before hitting .385 in his last seven games.

He was the hero in Friday's 4-3 victory with a game-ending, leadoff homer in the bottom of the 11th inning. The Mariners won for the second time in their last eight.

"There is no pressure," Morrison said. "The only pressure that you have is the pressure you put on yourself and any outside influence shouldn't matter. We expect to be great, I expect to be great, everybody that goes out on the mound expects to be great."

Josh Reddick hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fifth inning for Oakland, which blew a 3-1 lead in the seventh when Brad Miller and Robinson Cano delivered consecutive RBI doubles.

'I've said this before, I love my guys. We've had some ups and downs but I think in the end talent will come to the top,' Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. 'It always does over the course of a 162-game schedule. I believe in these guys and I believe in what they can accomplish.'

Friday's contest marked the third straight between these teams to go to extra innings, with Seattle winning all of them. The Athletics are 0-5 in extra innings and 1-9 in one-run contests.

This series features the league's two most productive hitters. Seattle's Nelson Cruz leads the AL with a 1.130 OPS with Oakland's Stephen Vogt second at 1.037.

A's starter Jesse Hahn (1-2, 4.33) had a 2.86 ERA through four outings before giving up career highs of six runs and 10 hits over five-plus innings in Monday's 8-7 loss at Minnesota.

The right-hander is facing Seattle for the second time in his career, allowing four runs - one earned - in 5 2-3 innings in an 8-7, 10-inning home defeat April 12.

Preview: Lightning (50-24) at Canadiens (50-22)

                  Date: May 09, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Tampa Bay Lightning are 5 for 5 this year in Montreal. Now they need one more road win against the Canadiens.

The Lightning had a chance to sweep the Canadiens on Thursday night, but goaltender Ben Bishop was pulled in the second period of Montreal's 6-2 victory. Now the second-round series is headed back to Canada for Game 5 on Saturday night.

Tampa Bay has won each of its five games in Montreal in 2015, outscoring the Canadiens 18-8 in Bell Centre. It scored eight of the 11 goals in the first two games of the series at Montreal.

'We've had some success in their building and we played well there in the regular season, too,' Lightning forward Ryan Callahan said Friday. 'I think we're comfortable going in there.'

Montreal had six different goal scorers in its first win in nine games this season against Tampa Bay. It had struggled to score against the 6-foot-7 Bishop, who stopped 100 of 104 shots through the first three games of the series.

'We get as much pressure as we can on him and go to the net, score some goals, shoot a lot of pucks at him and it will pay off eventually,' center Tomas Plekanec said.

Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper lifted Bishop after David Desharnais' shot skipped off the goaltender's glove and into the net for the 5-7 forward's first goal of the playoffs. Bishop finished with 11 saves.

The Lightning still have a commanding 3-1 lead in the series, but a couple of the games could have gone either way. They won 2-1 in double-overtime in Game 1, and grabbed another 2-1 victory on Tyler Johnson's goal with 1.1 seconds remaining Wednesday night.

'We have to get back to our speed game, our transition game,' Callahan said. 'I think we're at our best when we move the puck up the ice and attack the other team. There hasn't been enough of that the last couple games.'

Cooper said he is confident his team will bounce back from the Game 4 loss.

'We have to put our best foot forward,' he said. 'Both teams know each other well, we just have to execute. We are a confident group. We have proven we can rebound from disappointing games.'

The Canadiens won their first three games of the playoffs against Ottawa, and then dropped their next two before eliminating the Senators with a 2-0 victory in Game 6 on April 26.

'It's always a comfortable lead when you're up by three, but on the other hand you've got to understand momentum can change quick,' Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. 'Momentum in hockey changes quick and breaks change quick.'

Max Pacioretty hopes to have found some momentum after getting a short-handed goal and two assists Thursday. The club's scoring leader during the regular season had only one point through the first three games of this series.

Defenseman Andrei Markov also registered just his second point of the playoffs after having 50 this season.

Tampa Bay had only allowed four goals over its previous 14 periods before Markov and Pacioretty scored in the first period Thursday. The loss ended the Lightning's five-game playoff winning streak during which Bishop allowed six goals.

Bishop is 13-2-2 lifetime against the Canadiens, including playoffs.
