    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Rockets 115, Clippers 109-- Houston was 42-64 from foul line. LA was 25-32; they outscored Rockets 41-21 in second quarter but still lost.

    -- Cavaliers 106, Bulls 91-- Chicago's starting guards were 11-34.

-- Tampa Bay 2, Montreal-- Lightning is up 3-0 in series; they've won Stanley Cup more recently than the Canadiens.

-- Washington 2, NY Rangers 1-- Rangers scored once in last two games.

-- Chase Utley sat out last night; he is batting .103 this season.

-- Angels 4, Mariners 3-- Last two nights, 52 of 60 starting pitchers got decisions in their games, an unusually high number.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

    13) Some Las Vegas sportsbooks took the Week 1 Steelers-Patriots game off the board after the DeflateGate report was released; others lowered the spread from 6.5 to 3.5. This just in; Tom Brady is worth more than three points.

Roger Goodell makes a fortune as commissioner, but he's going to earn that cash with this decision. He'll get crushed by the media if he doesn't suspend Brady for at least a game, even if it is on NBC.

    12) LA Clippers are the only team of the eight still playing in the NBA playoffs that doesn't have a Florida Gator alum on their squad.

    11) Dylan Ennis (9.9 ppg last year) transfers from Villanova to Oregon, where he will be eligible to play immediately.

    10) Bryce Harper hit three homers yesterday; Joc Peterson has six homers in his last seven games, Mike Trout does awesome stuff every night. Would be nice if some of these guys got to play on Sunday Night Baseball, instead of ESPN showing the Bronx Bombers every week.

    9) Ernie Johnson won a Sports Emmy the other night, but he gave it to the late Stuart Scott's children, because Johnson is a classy guy and someone for all of us to look up to.

    8) Houston Astros were on a 10-game roll coming into this week, until Texas swept them three games in a row- Astros scored five runs in the three games. They still have a five-game lead in the putrid AL West.

    7) I'm curious how sabermetricians view the Red Sox pinch-running for David Ortiz when he was at second base with the tying run in the bottom of the 8th inning? With leftfield being so short in Fenway, I'm thinking it lessens the amount of times a faster runner could score from when second when Ortiz could not. Anything off the Monster you and I (and Ortiz) could score on- I'm just curious, thats all...........

....especially because Ortiz' spot came up in the order in the last inning and he wasn't in the game to tie or win the game. You know the math guys have figures on all this, just wish I knew what those numbers said.

    6) Don't think I've mentioned this yet: ESPN re-designed their website and I don't like it-- the new layout isn't easier to navigate, not at all.

    5) Unintended impact of instant replay: in the Met game, they were going to pinch-hit for the pitcher with a guy on second after the previous batter hit a double. The pinch-hitter was announced into the game, but in meantime, the play got changed from a double to a home run, meaning the bases were empty, so they let the pitcher hit, but Baltimore objected, saying the pinch-hitter was announced, so the pitcher had to leave the game. They lost that argument and the game. One of the cool things about baseball is these obscure rules pop up and they've never had to be dealt with before.

    4) A's are a very disappointing 12-17; they've allowed 15 runs in the 12 wins, have been outscored 120-56 in their 17 losses- they're 1-11 in games following a win-- that not good.

    3) The Knicks hired Isiah Thomas to run the WNBA's NY Liberty, which is amusing on numerous levels. Incompetence, sexual harassment; not totally sure which one is worse, but he has both of those covered, so good hire!!!!

    2) Oklahoma City had 7.98 inches of rain in a 24-hour period this week, setting the city's record for most rain in a 24-hour period. Bad week for car washes. Hope everyone stays safe; tornadoes are scary stuff.

    1) When you look up "leading by example" in the dictionary, there should be a picture of Mike Conley. How can one of his teammates not dive for a loose ball or go all-out for a rebound? The guy is playing with a broken face.......

Orioles SS Hardy expected back Thursday

NEW YORK -- The Baltimore Orioles are about to get their starting shortstop back.

J.J. Hardy, who has been on the disabled list all season with a left shoulder strain, played in his third rehab game for Double-A Bowie on Wednesday night and went 1-for-4.

Earlier Wednesday, prior to the Orioles' 5-1 loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field, Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said Hardy had "passed every (test) physically" and could rejoin the team Thursday and be activated prior to the opener of a four-game series against the New York Yankees.

Pitching continues to be trouble spot for sliding Rockies

DENVER -- After getting swept 13-7 and 5-1 by Arizona in a doubleheader, the Rockies are in a serious slide. They have lost a season-high seven straight games and have been outscored 65-25 in those defeats.

During that tailspin, Colorado's starting pitchers are 0-7 with a 9.46 ERA (34 earned runs, 32 1/3 innings). Tyler Matzek, who has been flirting with danger in previous starts due to spotty command, couldn't avoid trouble in the first game. He threw a career-low two innings, matched his career high with six walks and threw just 20 of 58 pitches for strikes. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Matzek's 34.5 strike percentage is the lowest in a game since the start of the 2000 season (minimum of 50 pitches).

Matzek was lifted after facing two batters in the third, making it eight straight starts of five innings or less for Colorado's starters. Jordan Lyles did pitch seven innings in the second game, just the third time in 26 games that the Rockies' starter had worked seven innings.

The Rockies swept the Giants in San Francisco from April 13-15 to improve their record to 9-2. They are 4-13 since then and have been outscored 124-62 in that span.

The Rockies are off Thursday and will play a weekend series with the visiting Dodgers. After facing former teammate Brett Anderson on Friday, the Rockies will face Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke in the final two games of the series.

Rays just keep going under totals, extend streak to 11

We hope you've been paying attention, because the Tampa Bay Rays just keep going under totals.

Topping the Boston Red Sox 5-3 Wednesday night with a total of 8.5, makes 11 consecutive games where they have gone under, giving the Rays' the third longest such streak since 2010.

The key to the streak is that while the Rays can't score any runs, they aren't allowing many either. Tampa Bay is plating just 2.64 runs per game, while allowing 2.45 runs per game during the streak. The run has also made the Rays the best under play in baseball at 10-18 over/under.

Tampa Bay begins a four game series with the Texas Rangers Thursday. The Rangers are 12-3-1 O/U this season.

Chris Archer (1.64 ERA, 1-5 O/U) gets the call for the Rays, while the Rangers counter with Nicholas Martinez (0.84 ERA, 4-1 O/U). The total for tonight's game currently sits at 7.0.

                    Thursday, May 7

Wind blowing in at Target Field Thursday

According to weather forecasts, wind will be blowing in from right field at around 17 miles per hour at Target Field when the Minnesota Twins host the Oakland A's Thursday afternoon.

Furthermore, there is possibility of thunderstorms throughout the day before, during and after the game.

Dogs, under have good day on the diamond

Underdogs and the under were the trends to back in Major League Baseball action Wednesday, with both going 10-6.

It's a great night for dogs, who were cashing just 38.71 percent of the time over the past week and 45.79 percent for the season.

Meanwhile, the under is 180-208 on the season, coming through 46.39 percent of the time.

Kluber, bigs worst money pitcher, looking for first win

Cleveland Indians pitcher and last year's Cy Young winner, Corey Kluber has had a rough start to the season, with his team losing all six games he has started leaving him as the major's worst money pitcher at $-828.

That number has him over $300 worse than the next closest pitchers, with the Phillies David Buchanan at $-500 and the Red Sox Clay Buchholz at $-496.

Kluber will try to improve that number Thursday when he visits the Kansas City Royals Thursday afternoon. He and the Tribe are slight -102 dogs.

Marlins are hot at San Francisco's AT&T Park

The Miami Marlins head into Thursday's game with the San Francisco Giants with a 12-3 record in their last 15 meeting in San Fran's AT&T Park.

The Marlins took two of four games in the Bay last season and three of four in 2013.

The Fish and Giants open a four-game set Thursday evening. Dan Haren is the probable starter for the Marlins (+116) while the Giants (-126) are slated to counter with Tim Hudson.

Mariners now the worst $ team after disappointing start

It has not been the start to the season the Seattle Mariners envisioned, now sitting in last place in the AL West at 11-17 and are the worst money team in baseball at -$944.

A big problem for the Mariners is they have struggled in games where they are moderate favorites, going just 3-7 this season when listed between -110 and -150.

Also what was expected to be their strength, starting pitching, hasn't been so, with Mariners starters posting a 4.92 ERA this season.
