    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Astros have won 10 games in a row, have a 7-game lead in AL West.

-- Brewers fired manager Ron Roenicke, replaced him with Craig Counsell.

-- Chris Paul (hamstring) probably won't play in Game 1 tonite in Houston.

-- A's are 10-5 in games decided by 3+ runs, 1-10 in games decided by 1-2 runs.

-- Golden State hasn't lost at home since January 27 (Bulls).

-- Wizards won their last four Game 1's that were on road; they're first NBA team ever to do that, win four straight Game 1 road games.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a busy weekend..........

    13) NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has apparently gotten a lot of notes from youth basketball coaches asking him not to outlaw "Hack-a-Shaq" (fouling bad foul shooters intentionally) because they want to show kids that not making your foul shots can negatively affect your playing time.

    12) Astros have won ten games in a row, lead AL West by seven games; how long before they get a game on ESPN?

    11) Speaking of Houston, they opened at -$205 against Texas Monday, the first time they've been that big a favorite in any game since 2008.

    10) Florida State had 29 football players drafted the last three years, coming up two short of the record (Texas had 31 drafted from 1982-84).

    9) Mets lost 1-0 the last two days, first time since 1990 they lost to the same team 1-0 on consecutive days- last time it happened at home was 1973. Mets are 3-7 since their 11-game winning streak ended- they're also playing without their third baseman and catcher, who are on the DL.

    8) Heard this a while ago, then again this weekend; it is bad form for catchers to yap at umpires about called strikes when they're batting, since they want those pitches called strikes when they're behind the plate.

    7) Gonzaga lands Nigel-Williams Goss, a Pac-12 level PG who transferred out of Washington and will have two years left to play. Great get.

    6) Ole Miss football coach Hugh Freeze, who uses NASCAR terms to describe the paces of his offense, drove the pace car at Talledega Sunday.

    5) Texas Rangers have to be concerned with P Yovani Gallardo, who induced zero misses on 38 swings Sunday against Oakland; it is very rare for a pitcher to pitch 6.2 innings and not get a single swing/miss. The 30 starting pitchers Sunday averaged 7.8 swing/misses.

    4) Lot of people grade the NFL Draft the day after it happens, which creates a lot of page visits I guess, but draft grades don't mean squat for 3-4 years, when you evaluate everything that actually happened.

    3) Great clutch shot by Chris Paul Saturday nite to win Game 7, but my lasting impression of Paul will always be this: he was very close to his granddad, who was murdered at age 61 the day after Paul declared to go to college at Wake Forest partially because his granddad loved the Deacons- the cap he put on at his news conference was his granddad's Wake Forest cap.

A few days later, Chris Paul scored 61 points to honor his granddad, then he collapsed on the sideline in inconsolable grief when he was taken out of the game. It is one of the saddest and heart-wrenching things I've ever seen.

    2) Classy of San Antonio fans to greet the Spurs at the airport when they came home after losing a great Game 7 Saturday night.

    1) Many thanks to the fine people at VA Hospital in Albany; my dad just spent four weeks there-- the kindness and professionalism of the workers will never be forgotten. My dad is in a rehabilitation place now, trying to get back on his feet-- any prayers you could offer him would be appreciated.

Surging Yankees continue AL East swing

BOSTON -- It's early, but things are going very well for the New York Yankees.

After starting the season 3-6, the Yankees have reeled off 13 wins in their last 16 games, 10 in their last 12. Sunday, they completed a sweep of a three-game series against the rival Red Sox at Fenway Park.

First baseman Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer in the first inning and left fielder Brett Gardner drilled a three-run shot to make it 8-0 in the sixth.

The Yankees, who won three out of four against the Tampa Bay Rays at home before coming to Boston, are 5-1 so far in a run of 17 straight games against the American League East. They now lead the division by three games as they head into Toronto.

Slumping Mets trying to hang onto division lead

NEW YORK -- The good news for the New York Mets is they've lost only one game on their division lead over the last 10 days. The bad news is that's the good news.

The Mets continued eroding the margin for error they built for themselves in April by dropping another 1-0 game to the Washington Nationals at Citi Field on Sunday, It was the second straight 1-0 loss for the Mets against the Nationals and New York's seventh loss in its last 10 games since a team record-tying 11-game winning streak from April 12-23.

Despite the skid, the Mets still lead the NL East by 3 1/2 games over the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves. Their lead was 4 1/2 games on April 23.

            Pirates' offense continues to sputter

ST. LOUIS -- When you boast the second-best ERA in the majors after 25 games, you should have a better record than 12-13.

But the Pittsburgh Pirates left St. Louis a game under .500, thanks to an offense which continues to struggle to hit and score runs. Sunday's 3-2, 14-inning loss was simply the most gut-wrenching of a weekend where the Pirates were the Cardinals' equal, until it came time to win the game in extra innings.

The Pirates are outscoring their opponents by 15 runs despite batting only .231 and drawing a paltry 51 walks in 25 games. Mainstays like 2013 National League Most Valuable Player Andrew McCutchen (.193), 2014 NL All-Star Josh Harrison (.188) and Starling Marte (.258) are hitting well below par.

The team is also doing a poor job of hitting to situations. It stranded 31 runners in the series' last two games, going 1-for-20 with runners in scoring position.

Braves' Minor may not return this season

ATLANTA -- It is a legitimate possibility that Mike Minor won't pitch another game for the Atlanta Braves this season.

The club moved the veteran left-hander from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL on Saturday because of the lack of improvement in his left shoulder. The procedural move gives the team more flexibility with roster moves.

"We don't see him coming back any time soon," Atlanta general manager John Hart said. "We felt this was the right move for the organization and the right thing for Mike, because he's not close to being out there ready to go."

Minor's troubles began in spring training when he was shut down for a couple of weeks because of inflammation in his throwing shoulder. He did not make an appearance during spring training.

Minor had his rehabilitation stifled three weeks ago when he was throwing off a mound and felt some pain.

Minor has undergone several MRIs, which reveal no structural problems.

CHICAGO BULLS (54-34) at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (57-29)

                NBA Playoffs
                Eastern Conference - Semifinals
                Tip-off: Monday, 7:05 p.m. ET
                Sportsbook.ag Line: Cleveland -4.5, Total: 194

The Cavaliers and Bulls will meet at Quicken Loans Arena on Monday for Game 1 of what is a highly anticipated series. The Bulls head into this series after being pushed by a young Bucks team in the first round. Milwaukee took Chicago to Game 6, but the Bulls dominated them 120-66 as 4-point favorites in Milwaukee that game.

The Cavs, meanwhile, swept the Celtics in the first round and covered in three of those contests. Cleveland has not lost since Apr. 12 and will now have home court advantage against a Chicago group that it beat SU in three of the four meetings between the teams.

The key to this series for Chicago will be PF Pau Gasol. Gasol averaged 16.3 PPG, 11.8 RPG and 2.3 BPG in the opening round and now faces a Cavaliers team that is without PF Kevin Love (Shoulder) for the rest of the playoffs. He’ll need to use his size and craftiness to take advantage of a much smaller PF Tristan Thompson. If he can give the Bulls an edge at the power forward position then Chicago has a great chance of advancing.

For the Cavaliers, C Timofey Mozgov is a player to watch. He must avoid foul trouble against C Joakim Noah or the Bulls will get far too many second chances on offense and the Cavs won’t have enough size to bang with the Bulls inside. One trend that stands out for Game 1 is that the Bulls are 48-31 ATS when revenging a loss versus an opponent over the past two seasons. They’re also facing a Cavaliers team that is not only without Love, but also SG J.R. Smith due to a 2-game suspension.

LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS (60-29) at HOUSTON ROCKETS (60-27)

                NBA Playoffs
                Western Conference - Semifinals
                Tip-off: Monday, 9:35 p.m. ET
                Sportsbook.ag Line: Houston -6.0, Total: 212

The Clippers travel to Houston on Monday for Game 1 of their series with the Rockets. Los Angeles enters this series after an emotional Game 7 victory over San Antonio on Saturday. The Clippers won that game 111-109 as 2.5-point favorites and showed some serious toughness, beating the defending champs despite being down 3-2.

The Rockets, meanwhile, beat the Mavericks 103-94 as 8-point favorites in Game 5 on Apr. 28. They will be well-rested heading into this series after dominating Dallas.

The Rockets and Clippers met four times this season and the teams split wins both straight up and against the spread. Los Angeles is, however, 8-3 straight up and 7-4 against the spread versus Houston over the past three seasons. PG Chris Paul is going to the most important player for the Clips in this series. He hurt his hamstring against the Spurs in Game 7 and Los Angeles will not win this series if he is not performing at a high level.

SG James Harden will need to play as well as he did during the regular season if the Rockets are going to win this series. The Clippers are weakest defensively at the shooting guard position and he should be able to find a way to dominate. One thing going in the Rockets’ favor is that they are 29-15 against the spread in home games this season. They are, however, beaten up with PF Donatas Motiejunas (Back) and PG Patrick Beverley (Wrist) out for the season.

                  Monday's Tip Sheet

                  May 4, 2015

                  Bulls at Cavaliers (-5, 194) – 7:05 PM EST – TNT
Game 1 – Eastern Conference Semifinals

Following a week of rest, the Central Division champion Cavaliers are back on the court minus several key pieces in their second round opener against the Bulls. Kevin Love is out for the remainder of the playoffs after suffering a dislocated left shoulder early in the first round series clincher against Boston, while guard J.R. Smith will miss the first two games of the Chicago series as he is suspended for a flagrant foul against Boston’s Jae Crowder.

The Cavs cruised past the Celtics in the opening round with a four-game sweep, while limiting Boston to less than 95 points in the final three victories. Cleveland covered in three of four wins, as LeBron James averaged 27 points and nine rebounds per game to lift the Cavs to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2010. Kyrie Irving turned in an impressive series in his postseason debut for Cleveland, topping the 24-point mark three times, while Love averaged 18.3 points per game prior to his setback in Game 4.

The Bulls built a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Bucks in the opening round before Milwaukee forced a Game 6 with a pair of underdog victories. Chicago didn’t mess around as a four-point road favorite, blasting Milwaukee 120-66 to grab the series, 4-2, as the Bulls built a 65-33 halftime lead and never looked back. The Bulls knocked down 39 three-pointers in the three games at BMO Harris Center, including 15 in the series clincher, as Jimmy Butler averaged nearly 25 points per game in the series.

VegasInsider.com NBA analyst Chris David isn’t overly concerned that one of Cleveland’s Big Three is out for the series, “I think the Cavaliers will miss Love in the playoffs but his absence is a tad inflated. Cleveland went 3-1 against Chicago in the regular season and Love did miss the loss but in the wins, he shot a combined 12-of-37 (32%) against the Bulls. The bigger loss is Smith for the first two games because I would assume he would check Butler on the defensive side.”

The Cavaliers won both home meetings with the Bulls this season, as Cleveland held off Chicago in the previous matchup on April 5 in a 99-94 triumph. The Bulls cashed as eight-point underdogs, as Smith lit up Chicago by knocking down 8-of-17 shots from three-point range, while Irving scored a game-high 27 points. Derrick Rose sat out that loss for the Bulls, as Mike Dunleavy stepped up with a 24-point effort and Aaron Brooks dropped in 17 points in place of Rose.

Tom Thibodeau’s team owned a 10-10 ATS record as a road underdog this season, as the Bulls are receiving points in the postseason for the first time. Chicago is facing Cleveland in the postseason for the first time since 2010, when the top-seeded Cavaliers knocked out the Bulls in five games. In all three games played in Cleveland, the Bulls were listed as double-digit underdogs each time and lost, but covered twice.

David hands out his prediction for tonight’s Game 1, “Even without Love and Smith, I’d lean to Cleveland in the opener and the long layoff doesn’t bother me as much with the Cavaliers. They went 4-2 on rest of three days or more and their longest period was eight days, which occurred at the All-Star break and the Cavs posted a 37-point win in that spot.”

                  Clippers at Rockets (-6, 212) – 9:30 PM EST – TNT
Game 1 – Western Conference Semifinals

Houston waited and waited for its opponent in the second round after taking care of Dallas in five games. The Clippers and Spurs kept the Rockets on pins and needles until Saturday night, when Los Angeles eliminated the defending champions in an epic Game 7 at Staples Center to return the conference semifinals for the second straight postseason. However, the task to slow down this uptempo Rockets’ team will be a challenge if the Clippers are without their All-Star guard in Game 1.

Chris Paul hobbled his way to the second round by banking in a shot over Tim Duncan in the final seconds of Saturday’s 111-109 victory over San Antonio. Paul suffered a left hamstring injury in the first half of Game 7, but managed to score 27 points, while knocking down 5-of-6 three-pointers in the win. Although the Clippers didn’t cover as three-point favorites, Los Angeles shot 52% from the field and helped out Houston, as the Rockets lost three of four regular season matchups with the Spurs.

The Rockets covered all three games at the Toyota Center against the Mavericks, while taking advantage of a Dallas team that played the final three games without Rajon Rondo and Chandler Parsons. Although James Harden fell short of the league MVP to Golden State’s Stephen Curry, Harden proved his value against Dallas by averaging 28.4 ppg, while Dwight Howard put up 16.6 ppg and 13.8 rebounds per game for Houston.

The Rockets and Clippers split four games this season, as each team won once at home and once on the road. Los Angeles blew out Houston, 102-85 in late November at the Toyota Center, as the Rockets were without Howard and forward Terrence Jones. In their next meeting in mid-February at Staples Center, the Rockets shot a dreadful 9-of-45 from three-point range, while Harden was limited to nine points in a 110-95 defeat as three-point ‘dogs.

Houston claimed the next two matchups, starting with a 110-105 home triumph two weeks following the 15-point setback in Los Angeles. Harden struggled again from the floor (4-of-13), but managed to score 21 points, while Blake Griffin missed both February matchups with Houston due to an elbow injury. The final matchup took place in mid-March at Staples Center as the Rockets held off the Clippers, 100-98 as five-point underdogs. Harden didn’t shoot well with a 7-of-16 performance from the floor, but managed to knock down 17 free throws to score 34 points, while Howard sat out all four matchups against Los Angeles.

Paul played in all 82 games in the regular season, as there are no numbers to provide on the Clippers playing without their top player this season. Last season, Los Angeles put together a 1-4 ATS record as a road underdog when Paul was sidelined, while the Clippers have won six of the past eight matchups with the Rockets.

The Clippers have listed Paul as questionable for the opener, even though head coach Doc Rivers may err on the side of caution and rest the point guard. David predicted the Clippers would knock out the Spurs in the last round and is high on Los Angeles again, but just not tonight, “I believe the Clippers will win this series but I’m taking the Rockets in Game 1 just based on the Paul injury and the letdown factor. It’s hard to see L.A. getting up for this matchup after Saturday’s Game 7 win over San Antonio. Houston is rested and should be ready to go for the Clippers and probably happy they’re not facing the Spurs.”

From a totals perspective, this number is inflated due to Houston scoring at least 109 points in each of the five games against Dallas. “If Paul doesn’t go, I’d lean ‘under’ for the first game knowing that the Rockets had trouble scoring against the Clippers in the regular season. The ‘under’ cashed in all four of those encounters and this line seems too high for playoff basketball,” David says.
