Preview: Pirates (12-11) at Cardinals (16-6)
    Game: 3
    Venue: Busch Stadium
    Date: May 03, 2015 2:15 PM EDT

Michael Wacha was effective last season for the St. Louis Cardinals, but it took him 19 starts to get to five wins. Things are balancing out.

The right-hander will go after his fifth win in as many starts Sunday against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates as the streaking Cardinals try for a three-game sweep and sixth straight win.

Wacha (4-0, 2.42 ERA) would be the first St. Louis pitcher to win his first five starts in a season since Lance Lynn won his first six in 2012 and the first under age 24 to do so since Fred Frankhouse in 1927.

The latest, though, had more to do with run support than mastery on the mound. The 23-year-old, who had eight wins in 28 starts coming into the season, allowed four runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings of Tuesday's 11-5 home win over Philadelphia. He'd allowed three runs in 20 1-3 innings winning his first three starts.

"My command just wasn't where I wanted it to be," said Wacha, who is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in three games against Pittsburgh. "But those guys putting together great at_bats made my job easier."

The Cardinals (17-6) have thus far provided Wacha with a 6.58 run-support average, which is among the top 20 in the majors.

It hasn't been there in the first two games of the series, but after Saturday's 2-1 win in 11 innings, St. Louis has a pair of wins on four runs in 21 innings. The bullpen pitched five scoreless innings, extending its streak to 21, and trimmed its NL-best ERA to 1.41.

While run production hasn't followed for the last two games, the Cardinals have a .379 on-base percentage on the streak.

The Cardinals have won five straight over the Pirates (12-12), as well as 14 of 16 in St. Louis, with Pittsburgh scoring two runs or fewer in nine.

"When that's the case, you have to honestly self-evaluate why you came up short," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle told MLB's official website. "But is this place getting into our head? It's not in my head. We approach each game individually, but as they mount up, they can paint a picture. We fight to get in these positions (to win the game), get to the tipping point - and aren't able to tip it in our favor."

The Pirates left 18 runners on base Saturday for the first time since May 27, 2006, and went 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position. They're 2 for 18 in the series after entering with a .305 average.

Andrew McCutchen was 1 for 5, but that actually bumped his average to .198. The 2013 NL MVP has gone 18 games without a home run and is 2 for 17 in his last four games against St. Louis.

Wacha's opponent, Vance Worley, has been on the opposite end of the run-support spectrum with 2.63 per outing.

Worley (2-2, 4.50) will face his fifth straight division rival and seventh dating to last season after beginning the season with two starts against Milwaukee and two against Chicago. At home, the right-hander has been effective with two wins and a 1.54 ERA. Away, he's 0-2 with a 7.30 ERA after surrendering four runs and nine hits in six innings of Monday's 4-0 loss to the Cubs.

He has no decisions in three career starts against the Cardinals with a 4.96 ERA. Matt Carpenter (5 for 6), Jhonny Peralta (4 for 7) and Jason Heyward (6 for 12) have all given Worley trouble.

Preview: Brewers (5-18) at Cubs (13-8)
      Game: 3
      Venue: Wrigley Field
      Date: May 03, 2015 2:20 PM EDT

Although their young lineup has fallen on difficult times, the Chicago Cubs won't need a big day offensively if Jason Hammel can build on his best outing of the season.

The right-hander looks to continue his dominance of the league-worst Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday and help the Cubs avoid losing consecutive home games for the first time.

Since hitting .289 with runners in scoring position and averaging 5.5 runs during a four-game winning streak, Chicago (13-9) has gone 1 for 14 in those spots and totaled three runs while dropping two of three.

Only one of the Cubs' five hits in Saturday's 6-1 defeat went for extra bases and they struck out 18 times - their most since 2011. Rookie sensation Kris Bryant struck out in all four of his at_bats and has gone 0 for 9 with eight strikeouts over his last three games.

Anthony Rizzo was a bright spot by supplying the only scoring with a sixth-inning solo shot. The All-Star first baseman has reached safely in 11 consecutive contests, going 15 for 38 (.395) with seven walks for a .531 OBP.

Hammel (2-1, 3.55 ERA) is coming off Monday's gem, when he allowed four hits and struck out seven over eight innings in a 4-0 home win over Pittsburgh. He's had outstanding command in four starts, fanning 23 with only one walk over 25 1/3 innings.

"It all comes off the fastball," Hammel told MLB's official website. "If you can't locate the fastball, you're going to be in big trouble. For me, it's especially important. I have to use my tall frame and use the downhill plane - sinkerballers, we have to establish a strike zone first and then you get swings early after that."

Hammel has pitched particularly well at Wrigley Field, going 5-1 with a 2.39 ERA in nine career starts. He's never faced the Brewers there, but is 5-0 with a 1.85 ERA in six meetings dating to his time with Colorado.

Khris Davis and former Cub Aramis Ramirez are a combined 2 for 14 off Hammel, but Ryan Braun is 5 for 13 in their matchups. Adam Lind is 4 for 9 with two homers versus Hammel since 2013.

Milwaukee (6-18) ranks near the bottom of the majors with a .225 average and 3.2 runs per game, though Braun is providing a spark with four home runs and eight RBIs over his last four games.

Carlos Gomez had an RBI single and stole two bases in his first game back from a 15-game absence because of a strained right hamstring, while Ramirez should be back after sitting Saturday due to left hamstring tightness.

Jimmy Nelson (1-2, 4.03) allowed a total of three earned runs over his first three starts, but he's looking to rebound after giving up seven runs and a career-high five walks over 2 1-3 innings in Monday's 9-6 loss at Cincinnati.

"I'm going to learn from it, flush it, and get ready for my next one," the right-hander said.

Nelson has yielded eight runs over 10 1-3 innings while losing two career starts versus Chicago - both in September. Chris Coghlan has gone 4 for 6 with a home run and two doubles in the matchup.

The Brewers haven't gone this late in the season without a series win since 1972.

Preview: Athletics (10-14) at Rangers (7-15)
        Game: 3
Venue: Globe Life Park in Arlington
        Date: May 03, 2015 3:05 PM EDT

Sonny Gray got his season off to a stellar start by outpitching Yovani Gallardo on opening day.

That was at night and things have been difficult in day games for his Oakland Athletics.

Gray will try to improve to 4-0 in Arlington and get the best of Gallardo and the Texas Rangers once again Sunday while helping the Athletics earn their first day victory.

Gray (3-0, 1.98 ERA) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in an 8-0 home victory over Texas on April 6. He allowed two baserunners before Ryan Rua led off the eighth with a single for the only hit off Gray.

The right-hander helped spoil the Rangers debut of Gallardo (2-3, 4.05), who was charged with four runs and two wild pitches over four-plus innings to fall to 0-2 with a 8.10 ERA in two career starts versus the Athletics.

Gray undoubtedly enjoys pitching at Globe Life Park, the only stadium where he has made multiple starts and won them all. His two career complete games were shutouts in Arlington last season, and he yielded one run over 6 2-3 innings in his other start there.

It's not surprising that Rangers hitters have some ghastly averages against Gray, particularly Leonys Martin (.100), Adrian Beltre (.111), Rougned Odor (.143) and Robinson Chirinos (.077), while Prince Fielder is 0 for 9. Rua has enjoyed the most success with four hits in nine at_bats, though he is on the disabled list.

A poor offensive effort by the Rangers would put more pressure on Gallardo, who has allowed eight runs over 11 innings in losing consecutive starts. The right-hander has faced Ike Davis more than any Oakland hitter, holding the slugger hitless in 10 at_bats with five walks and four strikeouts.

Gray yielded two runs in eight innings to earn Tuesday's 6-2 home victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Oakland (10-15) is 0-8 in day games - the only winless team in the majors. Nineteen of its 20 homers have come at night.

These teams have split the first two in a three-game series that has featured two big innings for the Athletics. Oakland scored seven runs in the eighth inning to rally for Friday's 7-5 victory and plated six in the seventh inning Saturday to take a four-run lead before the Rangers rallied for an 8-7, 10-inning win.

'At the end of the day,' A's manager Bob Melvin said, 'we had a 7-3 lead and we couldn't hold it.'

Shin-Soo Choo and Kyle Blanks each homered and combined for six hits and six RBIs as Texas (8-15) ended a four-game slide. Choo hit a tying three-run homer in the seventh inning and scored the winning run in the 10th on Odor's single.

Adrian Beltre is 10 for 29 during a seven-game hitting streak, going 4 for 9 in this series. Fielder is 4 for 8 in the series with three runs scored.

Oakland wasted a huge effort Saturday from Josh Reddick, who went 3 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs. Reddick is 17 for 34 with 13 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak.

Preview: Angels (11-12) at Giants (10-13)
          Game: 3
          Venue: AT&T Park
          Date: May 03, 2015 4:05 PM EDT

Brandon Crawford's offensive improvement coincides with the San Francisco Giants' turnaround.

The shortstop has been particularly effective at home.

Crawford and the Giants go for a sixth straight home win in Sunday's series finale with the Los Angeles Angels.

San Francisco (11-13) has won eight of 12 with 3.5 runs per game and a .276 batting average after averaging 1.9 runs while hitting .189 during an eight-game losing streak.

Crawford is batting .333 in the last 12 and is 8 for 22 (.364) with two homers while the Giants have gone 6-1 at home over that stretch. He hit a solo homer for one of his two hits as the Giants won their fifth in a row in San Francisco with Saturday's 5-4 victory.

Crawford, though, is still struggling to solve right-handers, hitting .204 in 54 at_bats compared to going 7 for 21 versus lefties.

"I wish I knew what it was; I'd try it against right-handers," Crawford said. "It's a lot of work against left-handers in batting practice and focusing on staying up the middle."

Crawford is facing a right-hander in Jered Weaver (0-3, 5.83 ERA). Weaver, though, is trying to end his worst start to a season and avoid matching his longest single-season win drought. He went six straight games without a victory in 2010 and '11.

Weaver was hammered for five runs - three on a homer - in the opening inning Tuesday, gave up a solo shot in the sixth and left after the seventh of a 6-2 loss at Oakland.

"If he was throwing the ball as well as he could and hitting spots and had everything going, and was getting hit, we'd be a little more concerned," manager Mike Scioscia told MLB's official website. "But you can still see the upside with Jered. This guy just knows his way through a game. He knows what he's doing. He will figure this out.

"His stuff is not that far away from when he won 20 games."

Weaver tossed six scoreless innings while winning his only career meeting with the Giants in 2012, and this will be his first outing at San Francisco. The veteran is 8-1 with a 1.93 ERA in 15 games at NL parks - the lowest ERA among 59 pitchers who have made as least 15 interleague road starts.

Los Angeles (11-13) had won five of seven prior to this series and is trying to avoid being swept for the first time since April 10-12 to Kansas City.

Mike Trout is 7 for 14 with two homers, three doubles, four RBIs and six runs in the last four. He had a solo shot Saturday, while Albert Pujols had one of his own after missing two games with a hamstring injury.

"It's my job to be out there as much as possible but you don't want to do something stupid," said Pujols, who has homered in the same game as Trout 18 times, ranking only one behind Baltimore's Chris Davis and Adam Jones for the most by teammates in the majors since 2012.

The Giants are turning to Tim Lincecum (1-2, 3.27), who is trying to rebound from his shortest outing of the season. All four runs the right-hander allowed came in the third inning Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers and he was pulled after the fourth in an 8-3 road loss.

"I was missing over the middle of the plate too much. And regardless of the ball being down or up, I'm missing on the sides of the plate that I shouldn't be missing on," said Lincecum, who allowed eight hits and three walks.

Lincecum lost his only meeting with the Angels in 2009.

Preview: Rockies (11-11) at Padres (12-12)
            Game: 3
            Venue: PETCO Park
            Date: May 03, 2015 4:10 PM EDT

Continued home success against the Colorado Rockies has San Diego feeling confident.

The Padres will try to complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Rockies, who look to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat Sunday.

San Diego (13-12) dropped seven of eight and was fresh from being swept in a three-game home set by surging Houston before taking the first two against Colorado. One night after breaking out for their second 14-3 win over the Rockies (11-12) this season, the Padres received six solid innings from Brandon Morrow and two RBIs from Justin Upton in Saturday's 4-2 victory.

'That was a good team win,' Padres manager Bud Black said.

"These are the types of games you have to win."

San Diego has won four of the first six meetings this season with the Rockies, who have hit .218 and averaged 2.4 runs while losing 12 of their last 15 at Petco Park.

Upton is 4 for 8 with four RBIs in the series while Derek Norris is 11 for 23 with seven doubles versus Colorado this season.

James Shields (2-0, 2.90 ERA) has enjoyed a strong start to his Padres' tenure, lasting at least six innings in each of his five starts and ranking among the major league leaders with 41 strikeouts.

The right-hander allowed one earned run, fanned 12 and walked one over six innings of a 9-4 home loss to Houston on Monday. That came five days after he yielded a homer to Corey Dickerson and two other runs over six in a 5-4 loss at Coors Field.

Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez are a combined 10 for 19 with three home runs versus Shields, but 3 for 13 in this set.

Colorado's Kyle Kendrick (1-3, 8.36) went seven strong innings to begin his Colorado career with a 10-0 victory at Milwaukee on April 6, but is 0-3 with an 11.14 ERA in four starts since. He allowed eight runs for the second time in 2015, along with 10 hits, including two more homers, in 4 1-3 innings of Tuesday's 12-5 loss at Arizona.

After giving up 25 home runs with Philadelphia in 2014, the right-hander has yielded eight in 2015.

He gave up solo homers to Wil Myers and Yangervis Solarte and two other runs over seven innings while not factoring in the decision in the victory that came opposite Shields last month.

Upton is batting .308 with two home runs versus Kendrick, who was moved up a day to give Tyler Matzek some extra rest after the left-hander left his previous start due to cramping in his left hamstring.

Colorado held a 30-9 run advantage while winning its first six road contests, but has been outscored 63-22 in losing seven of its last eight away from home. The Rockies already lost five in a row overall from April 17-21.

"We need to continue to expect to win," catcher Nick Hundley told MLB's official website. "Not saying that we aren't, but if our mindset on a daily basis is to expect to be better than the team that we are playing, we'll be in really good shape."

Preview: Yankees (14-9) at Red Sox (12-11)
              Game: 3
              Venue: Fenway Park
              Date: May 03, 2015 8:05 PM EDT

Joe Kelly had one of the best outings of his career when he faced the New York Yankees three weeks ago, taking advantage of a lineup getting off to a slow start to the season.

He could be challenged plenty more this time around.

The Yankees look to complete their first sweep of at least three games at Fenway Park in more than nine years when they face Kelly and the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night.

New York dropped to 1-4 after Kelly gave up one hit - Chris Young's solo homer in the second - while striking out eight over seven innings of an 8-4 win April 11 in the Bronx.

The Yankees avoided a sweep with a 14-run outburst the following day that began a 14-5 stretch during which they're averaging 5.21 runs. Alex Rodriguez tied Willie Mays for fourth on the all-time list with his 660th homer in Friday's 3-2 victory over the Red Sox before Brett Gardner had three RBIs in Saturday's 4-2 victory.

New York hasn't won six straight on the road since June 3-17, 2012, and it hasn't swept a series at Fenway of at least three games since winning all five - including both ends of a doubleheader - from April 18-21, 2006.

The Yankees have won six of the last seven meetings in Boston.

"Now that you've won the first two, you want to win that third one," Gardner said. "It's hard to do, especially on the road. These games matter just as much as the games at the end of September. Hopefully we can keep playing well."

Kelly (1-0, 4.94 ERA) will look to shut down the Yankees again after a couple of inconsistent starts. He struck out a career-high 10 in Boston's 6-5 win over Toronto on Monday, but allowed five runs for the second straight outing.

The right-hander, who has won all three of his starts against New York with a 3.43 ERA, also walked three. His velocity has been solid, though, despite starting the season on the disabled list due to right biceps tightness.

"Up and down is exactly how you put it," Kelly said. "My arm felt good."

That's also how things have gone for the Red Sox (12-12), who are 6-6 at Fenway after dropping three of five to begin a nine-game homestand.

Daniel Nava is 2 for 29 over his last 13 contests and hasn't been in the lineup for the last three. He's 6 for 11 with a homer and three doubles off Alex Warren, who opposed Kelly three weeks ago.

Warren (1-1, 4.35) gave up one earned run in 5 1-3 innings in that contest before allowing eight runs over 9 2-3 in his next two starts. He bounced back to strike out six while giving up one run in 5 2-3 innings of the Yankees' 4-1 win over Tampa Bay on Monday.

The right-hander had made only three starts prior to this season and pitched exclusively out of the bullpen in 2014.

"It's still new to me in some ways," Warren said. "I'm just trying to learn as much as possible and learn on the fly."

The Red Sox have placed Ryan Hanigan on the 15-day DL with a broken right pinkie suffered while catching in the series opener.

Preview: Diamondbacks (10-12) at Dodgers (14-8)
                Game: 3
                Venue: Dodger Stadium
                Date: May 03, 2015 4:10 PM EDT

Joc Pederson is making his hits count for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pederson seeks to homer in his fifth consecutive start Sunday and help the Dodgers complete a three-game home sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The last four hits by Pederson have left the ballpark, including a tying solo shot in Saturday's 6-4 victory. His six homers tie him for the major league lead among rookies with Toronto's Devon Travis, and his .447 on-base percentage ranks fifth in baseball.

Los Angeles (15-8) has won the last four games started by Pederson, who has eight of his 15 RBIs in that span.

'It's about winning ballgames,' Pederson said. 'We're playing great baseball and it's fun to be a part of. I don't feel that anyone needs to put the team on their back. If someone doesn't do the job, the next person behind them will pick them up. That's part of being a great team.'

The Dodgers have taken nine of their last 10 at home against Arizona (10-13), including five straight. They rallied in the seventh inning Saturday when Pederson tied the game and Howie Kendrick singled in the go-ahead run.

Diamondbacks relievers have yielded six runs over 5 2-3 innings this weekend.

"Our bullpen is going to have to figure out what it takes to get these guys out," manager Chip Hale said.

Arizona slugger Paul Goldschmidt homered for the third time against Los Angeles this year. He has 12 hits in his last 22 at_bats and ranks eighth in the majors with a .440 on-base percentage.

The pitching matchup between Brett Anderson and Chase Anderson is a rematch of an April 10 contest between these teams that marked the first time in 15 years that starters with that last name faced each other.

It last happened Aug. 13, 2000 - when the Diamondbacks' Brian Anderson met Pittsburgh's Jimmy Anderson.

Both of these Andersons are Texas natives who allowed three runs in the first meeting, a 4-3, 10-inning victory for Arizona in which Brett lasted six innings and Chase pitched five.

The all-Anderson affair was the first game in which both starters had the same last name since Seattle's Felix Hernandez outpitched Cleveland's Roberto Hernandez in a 5-1 win Aug. 21, 2012.

Chase Anderson (0-1, 4.24 ERA) gave up five runs over 5 1-3 innings in Monday's 5-4 loss to Colorado. The right-hander went 0-1 with a 3.27 ERA in two starts at Dodger Stadium last year as a rookie.

Adrian Gonzalez is 3 for 7 against him and Yasmani Grandal is 3 for 8. Grandal is 6 for 16 with five runs scored against Arizona.

Brett Anderson (1-1, 5.49) has failed to last past the fifth inning in his last two outings, yielding three runs over 4 2-3 on Monday in an 8-3 victory over San Francisco. The left-hander is allowing left-handed hitters to bat .414 for the worst mark by an NL southpaw.

Goldschmidt is 3 for 6 with a homer against him and Mark Trumbo is 4 for 14 with one homer.

Dodgers infielder Juan Uribe is batting .324 during an 11-game hitting streak, though he has yet to play in this series.

                  Sunday's Tip Sheet

                  May 2, 2015

                  Wizards at Hawks (-4 ½, 198 ½) – 1:00 PM EST – ABC
Game 1 – Eastern Conference Semifinals

Washington is back in the second round for the second straight postseason, as the Wizards were one of three teams to pull off a sweep in the opening round. The Wizards took all four games from the Raptors, as Randy Wittman’s club covered all four times, including a 125-94 pounding of Toronto in the series-clinching Game 4 at the Verizon Center. Now, Washington has a bigger hurdle to clear, facing the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

The Hawks received an unexpected test from the eighth seed Nets in the opening round, as Atlanta eliminated Brooklyn in six games. Following a split through the first four contests, the Hawks finished off the Nets with a pair of double-digit victories in the final two games, capped off by a 111-87 rout at Barclays Center on Friday night to cash as five-point favorites. Atlanta extended a six-point halftime lead into a 26-point advantage after three quarters following a 41-point spot in the third, as Kyle Korver, Paul Millsap, and DeMarre Carroll all scored at least 20 points in the win.

The Wizards dropped three of four regular season matchups with the Hawks, including a pair of losses at Philips Arena. Atlanta won at Washington in late November as four-point underdogs, 106-102, as the game went ‘over’ the total of 200 ½ thanks to 28 combined points in the final two minutes. The Hawks improved to 7-5 with the victory, which came one month prior to that 19-game winning streak. During that long hot streak, Atlanta throttled Washington at home, 120-89 on January 11, as the Hawks opened things up in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Wizards, 33-12. The Hawks drilled 16 three-pointers in that victory, including five from Korver, while all 10 starters in the game scored in double-figures.

The lone win for Washington over Atlanta came at the Verizon Center in the final week of the season, as the Hawks sat all five of their starters in a 108-99 loss. John Wall and Bradley Beal combined for 41 points in that victory, even though Wall turned the ball over 10 times. Wall averaged 20 points per game in the three losses for the Wizards, while Beal averaged 16 ppg in those defeats, as the win over the Hawks last month is hard to include with all of their top players sidelined.

VegasInsider.com NBA analyst Chris David says the rest for the Wizards may hinder them in the opener, "The rest vs. rust factor is very tough to handicap but something you should be aware. It’s rare for NBA teams to catch long breaks during the season, the norm is three days and that doesn’t happen often. Washington played five games this year with at least three days off between games and it went 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS. The worst loss came on Feb. 20 to the Cavaliers and the Wizards were coming off a break of nine days due to the All-Star break. Sunday’s game is a seven-day layoff and even though Washington looked impressive against Toronto, don’t be surprised to see them come out flat in Game 1."

Washington owns a terrific record as an underdog in the playoffs since last season, posting a 7-1 SU and 8-0 ATS mark, including outright ‘dog wins in the first two games of the Toronto series. The Hawks failed to cover the first four games of the Brooklyn series, but grabbed ATS wins in the final two victories. Since the 2013 playoffs, Atlanta has compiled an 0-4 ATS record in its last four as a home favorite, while the Hawks are 10-2 to the ‘under’ since 2012 in the postseason at Philips Arena.

                  Grizzlies at Warriors (-10, 197 ½) – 3:30 PM EST – ABC
Game 1 – Western Conference Semifinals

Golden State has been resting for a week since sweeping New Orleans in the first round, as the Warriors look to keep up that momentum heading into the conference semifinals. Following a pair of home wins as double-digit favorites in which the Warriors failed to cover, Steve Kerr’s squad erased a 20-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter of Game 3 to shock New Orleans in overtime, 123-119. Golden State finally picked up an ATS win in the Game 4 close-out in the Big Easy, stomping the Pelicans, 109-98 as 6 ½-point favorites.

Memphis needed one more game than Golden State to advance to the second round for the first time since 2013. The Grizzlies knocked out the Blazers in five games, even though their point guard Mike Conley was knocked out of Game 3 with a facial injury. Conley didn’t play in Game 4, a 99-92 setback at Portland, while sitting out the series clincher at home in Game 5, a 99-93 victory as six-point favorites. Memphis beat Portland eight of nine times this season, while hitting just one three-pointer in 14 attempts in Game 5 as Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 26 points and 14 rebounds.

Conley traveled with team to Oakland but will likely sit out the opener as his eye continues to heal from the elbow he took in the Portland series. The Grizzlies dropped two of three regular season matchups with the Warriors, as the lone victory came at home back in mid-December, 105-98 as 3 ½-point favorites. The loss snapped a 16-game winning streak for Golden State, as Stephen Curry shot just 1-of-10 from beyond the arc, while Gasol and Zach Randolph dominated the Warriors’ frontcourt by combining for 41 points.

In their next meeting in late March at FedEx Forum, Curry turned things around by hitting 8-of-12 three-point attempts in a 107-84 blowout of the Grizzlies as 3 ½-point favorites. Curry scored 38 points, while backcourt mate Klay Thompson put up 28 points, as the two All-Stars combined to knock down 14 treys in the victory. In the final matchup at Oracle Arena last month, the Warriors held off the Grizzlies, 111-107 even though Golden State had nothing to play for with the top seed in the West locked up. Golden State failed to cover as eight-point favorites, thanks to the Grizzlies outscoring the Warriors in the fourth quarter, 41-18. Thompson lit up a banged-up Grizzlies’ squad for 42 points on 15-of-20 shooting from the floor.

David breaks down this matchup from the total standpoint, as he doesn't expect a shootout, "As far as the total goes, the oddsmakers are expecting a slugfest compared to the regular season affairs and I can’t disagree with them especially with Conley being out for Memphis. The Grizzlies know they don’t have the horses to run with the Warriors and I believe they’ll try to shorten this game and hope for a close margin entering the fourth quarter. Golden State has improved immensely on defense under Kerr and are ranked first in defensive efficiency, which is measured by the number of points a team allows per 100 possessions. Memphis is ranked second and even though some don’t like using analytics in their handicapping, you can’t ignore all of them."

Since the 2012 playoffs, the Grizzlies have put together an 11-7-1 ATS record as an underdog, including 1-1 ATS in this postseason. Memphis hasn’t been listed as a double-digit ‘dog this season, as the largest number the Grizzlies have received is 9 ½ points, which came against the Clippers in a 96-84 loss back on March 11. The last Memphis played in the second round back in 2013, the Grizzlies covered all five games against the Thunder, including all three as a road ‘dog.

The Warriors haven’t been a reliable home favorite of at least 10 points since the start of April, putting up a 1-5 ATS record. Prior to April, Golden State compiled a 14-8-1 ATS mark as a double-digit favorite at Oracle Arena, while the Warriors last lost at home back on January 27 to Chicago in overtime. In the Curry/Thompson era, the Warriors have won 8 of 11 home playoff games, but are just 1-3 ATS when listed as a home favorite.

Grizz, Warriors ready to meet in semifinals

                    May 2, 2015

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Golden State Warriors waited a week to play another playoff game, and they're still not exactly sure who they're facing in the Western Conference semifinals.

Sure, they know they'll host the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 1 on Sunday. They just have no idea whether Mike Conley can play after having surgery to repair broken bones in his face or how Memphis will adjust without its point guard.

''I'm not ruling him out until I don't see him on the court in Game 1,'' Warriors center Andrew Bogut said. ''He's got a week to prepare. These pills these days do wonderful things. We're preparing like he's playing. You never know what's going to happen. They could make him an Iron Man mask. Who knows?''

Conley traveled with the team to the Bay Area and is listed as doubtful for the series opener. Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger said after Saturday's short practice at Oracle Arena that Conley has been fitted for a clear, plastic protective mask but still needs to be cleared by the medical staff.

When that happens is anybody's guess. This much is certain: the Grizzlies are among the NBA's most formidable and physical teams regardless of who's on the floor.

''We believe we can get it done,'' Joerger said.

These two teams spent most of the season atop the West standings and many thought they might not meet until the conference finals.

The top-seeded Warriors won a franchise-record 67 games before sweeping New Orleans in the first round. They've been almost unbeatable on their raucous home floor, going 41-2, including winning their past 20 games.

Memphis slipped to the fifth seed in the final week of the regular season before dispatching the short-handed Portland Trail Blazers in five games. The Grizzlies are in the conference semifinals for the third time in five years, and their playoff-tested pedigree gives them reason to believe they can overcome Conley's absence if needed.

''I have confidence in my teammates,'' Grizzlies center Marc Gasol said. ''I know we have talent. We have competitiveness. I have no doubt in my mind that we can win against anybody in this league.''

The Grizzlies gave Golden State fits the past few years, but the Warriors shifted the matchup under new coach Steve Kerr this season. They went 2-1 against Memphis, winning once at home and once on the road, though both teams were missing key players in each game.

''Whether it's a flashy up-tempo game or whether it's an 87-83 game, we feel like we have enough pieces and versatility to win all sorts of ways now,'' Warriors point guard and MVP candidate Stephen Curry said. ''Our defense is going to show up. That's what we're going to bank on for the whole series.''

Here are some other things to look out for in the series:

REPLACING CONLEY: If Conley can't play, the Grizzlies' reserves will be under a lot of pressure to perform. Memphis handled Conley's absence the past two games by starting Nick Calathes and bringing Beno Udrih off the bench. They'll need to play better than they have all season against a Warriors team that starts Curry at point guard and has one of the league's deepest benches.

PHYSICAL FRONTCOURTS: The series features two of the most physical frontcourts in the league. Golden State's Andrew Bogut and Draymond Green ranked in the top five in defensive efficiency this season to pace the league's top-rated defense. Gasol won defensive player of the year in 2013 and power forward Zach Randolph is as crafty as they come inside. ''It's going to be an ice-bath series,'' Bogut said.

SPLASH BROTHERS: The league's highest-scoring offense flows through sweet-shooting Curry and Klay Thompson. Curry surpassed his NBA record for most 3-pointers in a season, finishing with 286 from beyond the arc, where he shot 41.7 percent in the opening round. Thompson ranked second in the league with 239 3-pointers and shot 48.5 percent from long range in the first round. Grizzlies guard Tony Allen is one of the league's best perimeter defenders, but it'll have to be a team effort to slow down Golden State's dynamic duo.

THE LEE FACTOR: Grizzlies guard Courtney Lee struggled with a right hand injury through the end of the regular season, scoring in single digits in nine of the final 14 games. But he looked healthy in the opening round, shooting 66 percent (31 of 47) from the floor and 54.5 percent (6 of 11) from 3-point range. Memphis needs outside shooting to keep Golden State from collapsing onto Gasol and Randolph.

SPEAKING OF GASOL: The man nicknamed ''Big Spain'' is coming off possibly his best playoff series. He tied his playoff high with 26 points to finish off Portland, and he has at least 15 or more points, seven or more rebounds and a block in each of his first five games this postseason.

Grizzlies' D to be tested by Warriors

                      May 1, 2015

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - To the Memphis Grizzlies, it's simply grit and grind. Harass opponents from one end of the court to the other, frustrating players into missing shots and forcing turnovers until they lose their offensive rhythm.

Tony Allen calls it shutting off the water.

Now they will try to slow down the NBA's top-scoring team when they meet the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference semifinals, and they may have to do it without one of their best defenders. Point guard Mike Conley is recovering from surgery Monday to repair broken bones in his left cheek.

Conley will travel with Memphis to Golden State, but his playing status is unclear. He has defended the likes of Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook and Tony Parker, and would defend Stephen Curry if he plays.

''Expect the worst, and if something better happens, then woo-hoo,'' Joerger said Friday.

The Grizzlies know any chance of reaching their second Western finals in three years depends on defense starting Sunday with Game 1 at Golden State.

''It's as simple as that, defense and defensive possessions with rebounds,'' All-Star center Marc Gasol said. ''It's always our key. That's the only way we know how to win and it's the only way we can win. We are not going to score a team high of 120 points or 115. I mean, it might happen one time but we definitely can't win a series doing that.''

The Grizzlies have ranked among the NBA's best defensive squads each of their past five seasons advancing to the playoffs. This season they ranked second in fewest points allowed during the season (95.1). Conley's value to their defense never was more stark than in their opening series against Portland.

With Conley, the Grizzlies held the Trail Blazers in the 80s through the first two games in the playoffs, well under their scoring average of 102.8 points during the season. Then CJ McCollum's elbow caught Conley in the face in Game 3. Without Conley, Portland scored in the 90s in the final two games with Nick Calathes and Beno Udrih trying to replace him.

''Mike Conley is as tremendous of an athlete as you'll ever see, and he has a big heart,'' Joerger said. ''He's able to stay in front of speed guys as well as anybody in the league. The guys that give him problems are the bigger and stronger guys like Westbrook and guys like that. Especially against speed guys, he can match speed for speed with anybody.''

Conley has plenty of company playing sticky defense.

Gasol was the league's defensive player of the year in 2013, and he ranked among the league's best shot blockers (1.62) this season. Allen has been on the All_defensive team three times and finished seventh in voting for the defensive player this season. He ranked third with 2.05 steals per game behind only Kawhi Leonard of the Spurs and Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook.

Allen said coming together without Conley obviously is motivation for the Grizzlies.

''We have to hold down the fort until he gets back,'' Allen said. ''You have to pull in as a unit. It can't be one guy who can take over what Mike can do. We have to do it as a committee. We're hoping he gets better and has a speedy recovery.''

Memphis also had the top three defensive players in the NBA this season based on points allowed per 100 possessions led by Calathes (92.9), Kosta Koufos (94.8) and Allen (94.9 points) among those playing in at least 55 games.

Zach Randolph, known more for his double-doubles than his defense, helped hold LaMarcus Aldridge to 37 of 112 shooting in their opening series with Portland.

Even with Golden State leading the NBA scoring 109.7 points per game, this series could feature some good defense all around. The Warriors led the league in defensive efficiency and are anchored by Draymond Green, who got more first-place votes for defensive player of the year than anyone else.

The Grizzlies are expecting Conley to rejoin them, even if they don't know when.

''One thing about Mike, he's a warrior, and he's trying to play as soon as he can,'' Randolph said. ''He's not going to just sit down. He's going to play if he can play.''

Hawks have swagger back going to Round 2

                        May 2, 2015

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Hawks seem to have their swagger back.

Just in time for the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Coming off their most complete performance of the postseason, the top-seeded Hawks faced a quick turnaround before hosting the Washington Wizards in Game 1 on Sunday.

Atlanta struggled at the end of the regular season, largely because it didn't have anything to play for, and then endured five tougher-than-expected games against eighth-seeded Brooklyn before wrapping up the opening-round victory with a 111-87 blowout Friday night.

''When we are playing the right way,'' Hawks forward DeMarre Carroll said, ''we can beat anybody.''

Washington will be playing for the first time in a week, getting an extended break after sweeping Toronto in the first round. While that disparity could give the well-rested Wizards an early edge in the best-of-seven series, Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer is hoping his team can ride the momentum from its dominating win over the Nets.

''The fact that we've been playing, we've been in a rhythm every other day, if you can make that an advantage, then it's to our advantage,'' he said. ''You try to turn everything into a positive.''

The Wizards, who finished 14 games behind the Hawks during the regular season, certainly feel good about their chances after beating up on the Raptors. John Wall is still dealing with a slight shoulder sprain, but otherwise Washington is good to go.

''We're just playing more confident,'' Wall said.

Turnovers have been an issue against the Hawks, who won three regular-season meetings before losing at Washington in the final week with all their starters resting.

''They're just great with their hands,'' Wall said. ''When you get into the paint, they're all using their hands to swipe down on the ball. They feed off their defense to get them going in transition.''

Here are some other things to watch for when the Hawks take on the Wizards:

STAYING ON POINT: This series matches two of the league's best point guards. Wall is a dynamic player who not only directs the Washington offense, he provides the Wizards with their top scoring threat (17.6 a game during the regular season). Atlanta's Jeff Teague showed his versatility over the final two games against the Nets. With the series tied 2-2, he took control in the fourth quarter of Game 5 on the way to scoring 20 points in a 107-97 victory. Then, in the series clincher, he didn't score a single point but doled out 13 assists, providing the spark for a dazzling third quarter that blew the game open.

BATTLE OF THE BIG MEN: The Wizards hope to take advantage of their size advantage on the inside with Marcin Gortat and Nene. The 6-foot-11 twin towers dominated the paint against the Raptors, and Washington's chances may largely depend on taking advantage of the one glaring weakness in Atlanta's game: rebounding. The undersized Hawks hope center Al Horford and forward Paul Millsap can use their quickness to draw Gortat and Nene away from the basket, which could free up more chances to slip inside for offensive rebounds. But the Hawks are willing to get beat on the boards, putting their main focus on transition defense.

JUNKYARD DOG: While Carroll was the only one of Atlanta's starters who didn't make the All-Star Game, he was the Hawks' best player in the opening round. The player known as the ''Junkyard Dog'' led the team in scoring at 17.5 points a game, while hitting 14 of 30 from 3-point range. Known mainly for his defense - he is often being assigned to the other team's top scoring threat, and figures to get Paul Pierce in this series - Carroll has given the versatile Hawks yet another go-to scoring threat.

HAWKS DEPTH: Atlanta shortened its bench during the opening round of the playoffs, as teams tend to do at this time of year, but depth is a major reason the Hawks went 60-22 during the regular season. Lightning-quick Dennis Schroder gives the Hawks another weapon at the point behind Teague, while Kent Bazemore provides a high-energy style and solid perimeter defense. When the big men need a rest, Pero Antic and Mike Scott are two more inside-outside threats at Budenholzer's disposal.

ROAD WARRIORS: The Wizards aren't likely to be intimidated about playing the first two games in Atlanta. Washington has a 7-1 road record in the playoffs over the last two seasons. For Randy Wittman, it's the best postseason start on the road for any coach in NBA history.

Preview: Flames (45-30) at Ducks (51-24)

                          Date: May 03, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

Bob Hartley declined to risk putting talented yet diminutive rookie Johnny Gaudreau on the ice for the third period of Game 1 with the Calgary Flames getting pummeled by the Anaheim Ducks in more ways than one.

Corey Perry beat up the Flames on the scoreboard and with his physical play. If Calgary can't figure out a way to stop him, it might be more of the same in Game 2 on Sunday night.

Perry had two goals and two assists in Thursday's 6-1 victory, giving him an NHL-best 11 postseason points. He becomes the first player with two four-point games in the playoffs since Philadelphia's Keith Primeau in 2004.

"You can see it on Corey Perry's face, how much he wants to score and how much he wants to be the guy that does the damage," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "That's probably why he gets into a lot of trouble with other players more than other guys. He can be an antagonizer and an instigator as well as a great player."

That's part of the reason the 5-foot-9, 150-pound Gaudreau observed the final 20 minutes from the bench. He wasn't happy with the decision, but Hartley simply was trying to protect one his top contributors.

Gaudreau, a finalist for the Calder Trophy after scoring 24 goals and adding 40 assists in the regular season, scored twice and had four assists in Calgary's six-game win over Vancouver. He played 14 1/2 minutes Thursday despite forwards Jiri Hudler and Micheal Ferland leaving early with undisclosed injuries.

Both are questionable for Game 2.

"Johnny wants to be on the ice, but my job as head coach of the Calgary Flames is to do what's best for the organization in those times, and what was best was to keep him on the bench," Hartley said. "He's a big-time player for us."

The Flames haven't won at Honda Center since Game 3 of their 2006 first-round series against the Ducks, dropping 20 straight there. Jonas Hiller won 100 regular-season and playoff games in Anaheim as the club's goaltender for seven seasons before signing a two-year, $9 million deal with Calgary in the offseason.

But Hiller allowed three goals on 14 shots before being pulled early in the second period Thursday. Hartley also yanked Hiller after he gave up two goals on three shots in Game 6 against the Canucks.

Karri Ramo stopped 18 of 21 shots after entering in Game 1, and Hartley will give Ramo his first career playoff start in this contest. He's 2-1-0 with a 3.20 goals-against average in three starts and two relief appearances against the Ducks.

He last started when he suffered a lower-body injury 58 seconds into the Flames' 4-0 win over Edmonton on April 4.

"It's a great challenge for me," Ramo said. "It's definitely easier, always, to start than (to enter in the) middle of the game. It's not the first time I've done it, so I'm sure I'm ready."

Anaheim doesn't care who's in net for the Flames. It has scored 22 goals while going 5-0 in the playoffs with 11 different players scoring. Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and three assists in Game 1, giving him five goals and four assists during a four-game point streak against Calgary.

Frederik Andersen has a 1.97 GAA in the playoffs and lost his bid for his first career playoff shutout when Sam Bennett scored halfway through the third in Game 1.
