    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Washington 2, Rangers 1-- Joel Ward scored in last two seconds for the win.

-- Anaheim 6, Calgary 1-- Flames are 1-23 in last 24 games in Orange County.

-- Bulls 120, Bucks 66-- Ugly end to a promising season for Milwaukee.

-- Clippers 102, Spurs 96-- Road team won four of six series games.

-- Royals 8, Tigers 1-- Kansas City is now 8-0 in series openers.

-- Nationals 8, Mets 3-- Last six Washington games went over the total

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Happy May Day, everyone...........

    13) After months and months of speculation, Round 1 of the draft was marked by the expected happening-- not many surprises at all Thursday night. Makes you wonder why so many media outlets pay so many people to speculate on whats going to happen, when nothing out of the ordinary happens.

Then again, Round 2 is tonight and the rest of the draft is Saturday; could be some wheeling and dealing then, or is this draft a little talent-shy, so people aren't willing to take a chance on a big trade?

    12) ESPN has a new star in Louis Riddick, who is excellent on TV; he only got on because Ray Lewis begged out after the problems in Baltimore, but they are idiots if Riddick doesn't become a big part of their pregame show.

    11) There are more than 3,000 hats stored backstage at the draft; all 32 teams in every size. Merchandising is big business.

    10) Odd but true: since he came into the NFL, Matt Ryan has made more money than Tom Brady- go figure.

    9) Only two trades last night; San Diego traded up to get RB Melvin Gordon, which will boost their offense- they gave up a lot to move up two slots.

    8) Speaking of the Chargers, Mrs Philip Rivers is pregnant with the couple's 8th child-- San Diego was wise to hang onto the veteran QB.

    7) Washington Huskies were only team to have three kids drafted last night, which I'm sure makes coach Petersen happy-- good ammunition for when he goes out recruiting for the next year.

    6) One of those three players was CB Marcus Peters, who Petersen tossed off the team LY after an series of arguments with assistant coaches. Kansas City scouts talked with Petersen's staff and with former coach Steve Sarkisian, and they must've found Sarkisian more convincing- they drafted the kid.

    5) Saints are going to run the ball more; why else would they draft 6-7, 313-pound Andrus Peat in the first round?

    4) Marc Trestman will be Baltimore's fourth OC in four years; his QB coach is Marty Mornhinweg, who somehow keeps getting NFL jobs, despite showing nothing that would distinguish him as an assistant or head coach.

    3) Hard to believe, but when the Giants drafted Ereck Flowers, he was the first Miami Hurricane drafted in first round since Kenny Phillips in 2008, also by the Giants. Before that, Miami had gone 14 years in a row with a first round pick.

    2) Interesting hearing NFL Network guys saying that Leonard Williams was "the best player in the draft." More than one guy said that. Jets got themselves a good deal.

    1) Elsewhere, Billy Donovan left Florida for the NBA-- big story next week will be who gets the Florida job and how many dominos does that create, job-wise?

              Friday, May 1

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              May good month/bad month pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of May. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in April, winning 33 percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify, pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s May list.

              GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

              Bailey, Homer • 12-6 (7-0 H)

The Reds right-hander will start the month on the DL with a with a right elbow ligament sprain. This is coming off September surgery that repaired a torn flexor mass tendon in the same elbow. When right, Bailey has two good fastballs he can work either corner and go up or down the ladder. His splitter is one hitter’s will chase with two strikes.

              *Buehrle, Mark • 15-2 (8-1 H)

The Toronto lefty continues to pitch well early in the season when he’s at his strongest now that he’s 35 years old. Buehrle has never thrown hard and his best fastball today might reach 85 MPH on a hot day, but he’s a craftsman working both sides of the plate.

              *Cain, Matt • 12-2 (6-1 A)

The former ace of the San Francisco staff began playing catch on April 28th as he works his way back from a flexor tendon strain in his throwing arm. Cain has not pitched since spring training, and had an injury-plagued 2014 season come to an end with August elbow surgery to remove bone chips. His return is unknown.

              *Cobb, Alex • 7-3 (3-1 A)

The 27-year-old right-hander has been sidelined with forearm tendinitis since March 17 and late in April tossed 21 pitches with no problem. He will continue rehab and if all goes well could be back later in May.

              Lynn, Lance • 12-5 (8-2 H)

Lynn has inconspicuously become one of the best No. 2 starters in the National League. His trade skill is pounding the strike zone and he cuts his fastball to RH hitters. His big looping curveball will freeze opposing batters.

              Sale, Chris • 10-1 (5-0 A)

Only 25, the White Sox left-hander has a herky-jerky delivery, hides the ball expertly and dives towards batters at the end of his delivery. His low to mid-90’s fastball commands both sides of the dish and varies the speed of his slider. A tough customer to face.

              *Scherzer, Max • 13-4 (8-2 A)

The high-priced Washington ace has not been quite as advertised just yet, but has been known to heat up like the weather. In today’s world Scherzer is a workhorse and intelligently uses his variety of pitches to be able to confound opposing hitters even their third or fourth time at bat.

              * Vogelsong, Ryan (12-4 (5-1 A)

At 37, Vogelsong’s best days are behind him, but with the Giants scrambling for starting pitching, he will again fit nicely in the back of the rotation. As long as the Charlotte native keeps the ball low, a quality start is possible.

              Weaver, Jered • 10-2 (5-1 A)

Like Buehrle, Weaver lacks the big fastball, but survives on guile and knowing how to pitch, which is actually his best trait. When spots the fastball all his off-speed pitches are that much more effective.

              BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

              *Chacin, Jhoulys • 1-10 (0-5 A)

Was surprisingly cut by Colorado in April and signed a minor league deal with Cleveland on April 24th. Could be brought up in May or June if Indians need a warm body to start.

              Correia, Kevin 5-11 • (2-5 H)

With San Francisco starting pitching woes, signed minor league deal in early April and could be called up if effective or if the Giants need a fifth starter.

              Haren, Dan 6-12 • (3-8 A)

Haran used to throw low 90’s, not anymore and his off-speed breaking pitches and splitter are flatter compared to years gone by. They are all among the reasons his May record is terrible and his career is heading south at 34.

              *Jackson, Edwin • 3-12 (1-8 A)

Moved to the Cubs bullpen and will be available as a spot starter. Would have been traded but current contract is unworkable for suitors.

              Kennedy, Ian • 5-11 (2-6 A)

For Kennedy to be effective his mechanics have to be right or he tends to keep everything up in the zone. With already one trip to the DL this campaign, it is hard to imagine when the righty will rediscover his ability to keep the ball down.

              Lincecum, Tim • 6-12 (4-8 H)

The two-time Cy Young winner has lost five MPH on his fastball and breaking pitches since 2011, which is precisely why he’s not the same pitcher he used to be. Unfortunately, getting your haircut does not make you throw harder.

              *Lohse, Kyle • 5-11 (3-7 A)

Lohse is more of a feel pitcher and past May’s have shown he has not felt well. It has been even worse this season to date with gargantuan 7.28 ERA to start this month. Rest assured, playing for this Milwaukee bunch will not lead to more success.

              *Nolasco, Ricky • 6-12 (3-7 A)

Been on the DL since April 9 with right elbow inflammation but pitched five innings, giving up one unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts on April 27th. The Twins management will decide the plan for Nolasco going forward and if he'll need another rehab start. Should be with Minnesota soon but not near the pitcher he was in Miami.

Tillman looks to continue dominance over Rays

The Baltimore Orioles have seen the wins come easily when Chris Tillman gets the start against division-rival Tampa Bay. The O's are 4-0 in Tillman's past four starts against the Rays dating back to the start of last season.

Tillman has only surrendered five runs in those four starts and have held the Rays to just 16 hits, an average of four hits per game.

Yankees have lost Sabathia's past seven starts

If C.C. Sabathia has been anything for the New York Yankees, it's a bad luck charm. In the large lefties past seven starts, four this season and three last season, the Yankees are winless.

Sabathia is allowing nearly four runs per outing in those past seven starts. So far on the season, Sabathia is 0-4 with a lofty 5.96 ERA.

MLB roundup: Reds' Leake beats Braves

ATLANTA -- Cincinnati Reds right-hander Mike Leake took it upon himself to make sure he finally got his first victory of the season.

Leake allowed just two singles over eight scoreless innings and hit the fifth homer of his career as the Reds defeated the Atlanta Braves 5-1 Thursday night at Turner Field.

Leake, who went at least seven innings in each of his previous three starts, retired the final 12 batters in faced. He struck out three, walked two and faced just two batters over the minimum thanks to a double play and caught stealing.

Tucker Barnhart, Todd Frazier and Billy Hamilton also homered for the Reds. Joey Votto had two doubles and an RBI.

                Blue Jays 5, Indians 1

CLEVELAND -- Toronto was held scoreless on three hits for eight of the nine innings, but it scored five runs on four hits in the fourth, and that was enough for a victory over Cleveland.

Danny Valencia and Russell Martin had RBI hits in the decisive inning, and Kevin Pillar hit a two-run double.

Michael Brantley and Ryan Raburn each had three hits for the Indians, who lost for the 13th time in 18 games.

                Nationals 8, Mets 2

NEW YORK -- Wilson Ramos had the go-ahead RBI groundout in the fourth inning and added an RBI single in the sixth as Washington became the first visiting team to win this season at Citi Field.

Ryan Zimmerman also had two RBIs -- via a fourth-inning sacrifice fly and a sixth-inning infield single -- and Bryce Harper hit a three-run double in the ninth for the Nationals, who came back from an early two-run deficit to win their third straight.

The Mets lost for the fifth time in seven games since a 10-0 homestand from April 13-23.

                Cardinals 9, Phillies 3

ST. LOUIS -- Matt Carpenter, Matt Holliday and Matt Adams took turns pounding Philadelphia into submission, leading St. Louis to an easy win.

Carpenter doubled home the Cardinals' first run in the bottom of the first inning and scored three runs, drawing walks his next two times up and scoring. Holliday delivered a pair of RBI doubles and scored twice, while Adams went 3-for-5, clouting a two-run homer in the third to snap a 3-3 tie.

St. Louis reliever Carlos Villanueva (2-1) pitched 3 2/3 perfect innings after starter Tim Cooney picked up only seven outs in his major league debut.

                Angels 6, A's 5

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Garrett Richards pitched six solid innings, and Los Angeles survived Oakland's furious ninth-inning rally.

Richards (2-1) allowed one run and four hits, struck out five and walked three as the Angels beat the A's for the second straight time to take two of three in the series.

The A's trailed 6-2 entering the bottom of the ninth but rallied for three runs on four hits. With the bases loaded and two outs, Ike Davis hit a deep fly to center off Huston Street, but center fielder Mike Trout made a leaping catch near the fence for the final out.

                Twins 12, White Sox 2

MINNEAPOLIS -- Powered by a seven-run third inning, the Minnesota rolled over the Chicago White Sox at Target Field.

The Twins did most of their damage off Chris Sale, who allowed more runs -- nine -- than he had in any of his previous 89 major league starts. Trevor May was the beneficiary of the offensive support. May wasn't great, allowing 10 hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings, but he limited the damage to two runs. He struck out four.

Joe Mauer had three hits and knocked in two runs, and Brian Dozier added two hits and four RBIs to lead Minnesota.

                Royals 8, Tigers 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon each drove in two runs and Danny Duffy pitched seven-plus solid innings as Kansas City pounded Detroit.

Duffy did not allow a run until Jose Iglesias tripled to start the eighth inning and scored on Rajai Davis' single. Duffy was removed after that, throwing 67 strikes in 101 pitches.

Every Royals player had at least one hit, and Jarrod Dyson went 3-for-4. Gordon, Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez each stroked two hits.

                Astros 3, Mariners 2

HOUSTON -- Jose Altuve notched his eighth consecutive multi-hit game and posted his first career walk-off hit, stroking a one-out single in the 10th inning to score Marwin Gonzalez and lift Houston over the Seattle at Minute Maid Park.

Altuve finished 3-for-5 with a run while Luke Gregerson earned the win in relief.

The Mariners' James Paxton had retired nine consecutive batters before the sixth.

Kentucky Derby betting horse-by-horse preview and picks

Saturday’s 141st running of the Kentucky Derby is one of the most anticipated in years loaded with potential superstars. Here’s a horse-by-horse look at the field for the Run for the Roses:

                    1. Ocho Ocho Ocho (Jockey - Elvis Trujillo, odds - 50-1):
Tiny colt won the first three races of his career but there’s too much speed in this field for him to be a true contender and you don’t win this race from the rail.

                    2. Carpe Diem (John Velazquez, 10-1):
Texas Red, who was believed to be a big Derby threat before being injured is the lone horse to beat this one in five career starts but Carpe Diem’s times haven’t been that great. A contender but one with question marks.

                    3. Materiality (Javier Castellano, 12-1):
Is unbeaten in three career starts and ran a 110 speed figure, the highest in the field, in winning the Florida Derby. Unraced as a two-year-old, which generally raises the white flag, and wants to run from the front, which is a bigger concern against these.

                    4. Tencendur (Manny Franco, 30-1):
Last race, a second in the Wood was his best yet, but even that won’t get the job done here. Pass.

                    5. Danzig Moon (Julien Leparoux, 30-1):
Wowed the clockers in a work on April 18 at Churchill Downs but has just one win in five starts and seems destined to finish in the middle of the pack.

                    6. Mubtaahij (Christophe Soumillon, 20-1):
Irish import won at Dubai and will be the wise guy’s pick but these foreigners never seem to run well here. Should be able to get the distance.

                    7. El Kabeir (Calvin Borel, 30-1):
Seems to be going backward and is a step below these. Borel always seems to make some noise but even he seems to be near the end of his great career.

                    8. Dortmund (Martin Garcia, 3-1):
The giant colt, a son of Big Brown, enters the race not only undefeated in six career starts but with gritty victories in his last three outings including the Santa Anita Derby where he lost his shoe at the start and still won by 4½ lengths. His biggest drawback is the fact he likes to run from the front and there is better early speed in here which could cause the Bob Baffert charge to alter strategy.

                    9. Bolo (Rafael Bejarano, 30-1):
Finished third to Dortmund in last two starts and is trained by Carla Gaines who looks to become the first female conditioner to win the Derby. Expected to be better on the turf.

                    10. Firing Line (Gary Stevens, 15-1):
Stevens returned from retirement in 2013 and will try to win the Derby at age 52. Firing Line rolled in the Sunland Derby and if you like Dortmund you have to believe this one can pull the upset.

                    11. Stanford (Florent Geroux, 30-1): Stanford was scratched Thursday afternoon and replaced by No. 21 Frammento.

                    12. International Star (Miguel Mena, 15-1):
Has won three straight and earned the most qualifying points in the field but his lone run at Churchill Downs was a stinker as was his lone Grade I event.

                    13. Itsaknockout (Luis Saez, 30-1):
Will serve as hunch bet on the day of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight; finished second in the Florida Derby but was moved to first after winner, Upstart, was disqualified.

                    14. Keen Ice (Kent Desormeaux, 50-1):
Just 1-for-7 lifetime but his closing style gives him an outside shot to make a bit of noise in the deep stretch if he’s not too far back by then.

                    15. Frosted (Joel Rosario, 15-1):
Tapit colt will take some money at the windows but his best races have been at New York and the Wood field was soft. Does have closing ability if a speed duel develops.

                    16. War Story (Joe Talamo, 50-1):
Tends to start slowly which is a death-knell in a big field. Speed figures are also far behind the top choices.

                    17. Mr. Z (Ramon Vazquez, 50-1):
Highly-touted yearling but he hasn’t won since his debut 12 races back and is a proven notch below the top contenders.

                    18. American Pharoah (Victor Espinoza, 5-2):
Some questioned the soft field and fractions in the Rebel win but he came back to crush a good group in the Arkansas Derby that was more impressive than anything that Dortmund has ran. Bob Baffert trainee is not only the choice here but his dynamic works also make one feel that he is in such razor-sharp form that he is a legitimate Triple Crown threat.

                    19. Upstart (Jose Ortiz, 15-1):
A true contender at a nice price and one has to like the fact that he breaks just outside of the favorite. Upstart ran wide the entire Florida Derby finishing second, has never been worse than third in seven career outings and could mount a big charge down the stretch.

                    20. Far Right (Mike Smith, 30-1):
Had a successful meet at Oaklawn but was no match for American Pharoah in last outing, the Arkansas Derby, despite finishing second. Always tries hard so he is a threat to hit the board. How about an 18-19-20 trifecta?

                    21. Frammento (Corey Nakatani , 50-1):
Drew into the field after Stanford was scratched. Decided longshot with no speed figures to merit consideration but trainer Nick Zito likes to have an entry in this race.

                    Also Eligible:
Tale of Verve (Brian Hernandez Jr., 50-1).

                    Picks:
                    1. American Pharoah. 2. Upstart. 3. Dortmund. 4. Firing Line.
