    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- White Sox-Oriole game was postponed because of rioting in Baltimore.

-- Dodgers lose pitcher Brandon McCarthy for the year (torn UCL).

-- Last night was Tampa Bay's 20th game, but their first outdoor game; their road games had been at Toronto/Miami, both domed stadiums.

-- There is a baseball player at U of Iowa named Fenway Parks. Seriously.

-- James Winston threw 18 INTs last year, second-most in country. New Mexico State's quarterback was the only QB who threw more.

-- St John's-Arizona State at MGM Grand in Las Vegas December 22; couple of pretty famous coaches, Chris Mullin and Bobby Hurley.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) Looks like college basketball will have a 30-second clock next fall; I just don't think its going to make a huge difference, if thats the only rule change. It creates a few more possessions per game, but not really that many more.

    12) Part of the reason Texas Rangers took a shot with Josh Hamilton going to Arlington is their attendance is down 11,160 fans a game since 2012. If it is true that the Rangers will only pay Hamilton $5M a year, that means the Angels are paying Hamilton $20.4M this year and $54.8M over the next two years to play against them!!! That must go over great in the Anaheim clubhouse.

    11) Golfer Mikko Ilonen should buy Phil Mickelson a nice Christmas present this year; Lefty dropped out of the Match Play tournament this week, which means Ilonen gets in-- even if he loses in the first round, Ilonen bags a check for $50,000 or so.

    10) According to college football expert Phil Steele, Washington Huskies will play the hardest schedule this fall; U-Dub's opponents had a 101-56 record last fall- they play at Boise State Labor Day weekend.

    9) Next time Alex Rodriguez hits a homer, he ties Willie Mays with 660 in his career and banks a checks for $6M, but his employers are trying to cheap out and not play the $6M, since they can't cash in on ARod's milestone (buy your own commemorative bat for $299.95!!!!) due to his steroid history.

    8) Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas closes down for good this Monday, the end of an era, but it is sold out this weekend, with the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight a big ticket in town. Lot of the older casinos in Vegas are slowly going away.

    7) There is a beer sold at my local grocery store called Arrogant Bastard Ale; I'm not much of a drinker, but thats a tremendous name.

    6) The 2011 San Diego Padres had eight relief pitchers for most of the year; five of those eight guys are now relievers for the surprisingly good Astros.

    5) Why teams lose: when the Seahawks took Russell Wilson with the 75th pick in the 2012 Draft, Jacksonvile took a freakin' punter five picks earlier. Why does a team draft a punter in the third round?

    4) There have been a total of 73 runs scored in Bud Norris' four starts, with Orioles 2-2, outscored 37-36. In Chris Archer's last four starts, there were a total of only fifteen runs scored- Archer allowed one run in his last 26.2 IP.

    3) Boston has pitching problems; Buchholz/Porcello have at least finished the sixth inning in six of their eight starts, but the other three starters finished six innings only two times in nine starts- that creates too much of a strain on their bullpen. Boston has to trade for a quality starter and soon.

    2) Both the shortstops on my fantasy team got hurt last night; Jose Reyes has been hurt, but finally went on the DL- he has a broken rib but had been trying to play thru it, not batting lefty because it hurt too much.

Jed Lowrie hurt his thumb sliding into home (why can't anyone slide??); he is flying back to Houston today for an MRI, which sounds ominous. Waiver wire in our 16-team keeper league is amazingly weak at shortstop. Oy.

    1) Trevor Bauer pitches against the Royals tonight; last night, he had boxing gloves on (real ones) in the dugout during the game, a reference to the issues Kansas City has been having with other teams this month.

MLB roundup: Murphy's homer helps Mets win

MIAMI -- Second baseman Daniel Murphy hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning, leading the red-hot Mets to a 3-1 win over the Miami Marlins on Monday night at Marlins Park.

The game was played quickly, in 1:58. It was the fastest game in the majors in three years, according to STATS LLC.

New York got all its runs off of Marlins closer Steve Cishek (0-1). Center fielder Juan Lagares led off the ninth with a double on a fly that went over the head of Marlins center fielder Marcell Ozuna, who did not judge the ball properly.

After first baseman Lucas Duda walked and left fielder Michael Cuddyer popped out, Murphy pulled a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right-center, putting the Mets up 3-1.

Jeurys Familia record his major-league-leading ninth save. He has yet to blow a save this season, and he set a Mets record for most saves in April, breaking the mark previously shared by John Franco and Armando Benitez.

CINCINNATI -- Jay Bruce hit a two-run home run, and right hander Jason Marquis pitched eight strong innings, as the Reds held on for the victory.

Marquis (2-1) allowed two runs and seven hits over 113 pitches, helping Cincinnati (9-10) improve to 4-1 this season against Milwaukee.

The Brewers (4-16) issued a season-high nine walks and uncorked four wild pitches while losing for the ninth time in 11 games.

              Yankees 4, Rays 1

NEW YORK -- The Yankees moved into sole possession of first place in the American League East with their win. They are 9-2 in their last 11 games.

The Yankees received a solo homer from catcher Brian McCann and a run-producing double from second baseman Stephen Drew, both in the sixth inning.

Lefty Andrew Miller picked up his eighth save in as many chances.

Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 5

BOSTON -- The Red Sox opened a nine-game homestand against AL East opponents by rallying to defeat the Blue Jays with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Center fielder Mookie Betts lined a game-winning single off loser Miguel Castro in the ninth as the Red Sox (11-9) ended a two-game losing streak and handed Toronto (9-11) its fourth straight loss on its current 10-game trip.

Boston third baseman Pablo Sandoval had a two-run single and a solo homer but left the game in the sixth inning with a sore neck suffered when he dove face-first catching a popped bunt.

              Phillies 4, Cardinals 1

ST. LOUIS -- After announcing that Cardinals ace starter Adam Wainwright would miss the rest of the season with a torn Achilles, St. Louis couldn't solve Phillies ace Cole Hamels.

Hamels (1-2) fanned a season-high nine over seven innings, allowing just four hits and a run while walking four, one intentionally. Relievers Ken Giles and Jonathan Papelbon picked up the last six outs, with Papelbon registering his fifth save.

Philadelphia left fielder Ben Revere had a two-run double in the seventh inning.

              Royals 6, Indians 2

CLEVELAND -- The Royals broke open a close game with a three-run seventh inning, and reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber of Cleveland will go winless in the month of April.

Royals left-hander Jason Vargas (2-1) gave up five walks in five innings but allowed only three hits to get the win.

In 6 1/3 innings Kluber gave up six runs, including four earned, on 10 hits, with two strikeouts and five walks. In five starts in April, Kluber was 0-3 with a 4.24 ERA. Last year, Kluber was 2-3 with a 4.14 ERA in six April starts.

              Orioles-White Sox postponed

BALTIMORE -- Major League Baseball commissioner Ron Manfred announced less than one hour before the scheduled first pitch that Monday's game between the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles was postponed due to violence in the streets of Baltimore.

The Orioles called off the game in consultation with the Baltimore City Police Department, according to a release by the team. Manfred said it is possible the rest of the series could be played at another site, and he did not rule out Nationals Park in Washington.

              Mariners 3, Rangers 1

ARLINGTON, Texas -- In his first three starts this season, Seattle right hander Taijuan Walker racked up a 10.66 ERA. Against Texas' light-hitting lineup, he delivered the kind of stuff that made him the club’s top prospect just a couple years ago.

The 22-year-old mowed down the Rangers through seven innings and he outdueled his Texas counterpart Yovani Gallardo to earn his first victory of the season, in front of a sparse crowd that waited out a 55-minute rain delay before the game could get started at Globe Life Park.

The delay might have affected Gallardo (2-3), who surrendered a pair of runs in the top of the first while having to throw 34 of his 101 pitches.

              Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 4

PHOENIX -- Justin Morneau hit a three-run home run in the first inning, and Corey Dickerson added three hits and an RBI in Colorado's victory over Arizona at Chase Field.

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki doubled, walked and scored twice, and Tyler Matzek (2-0) remained undefeated despite leaving in the sixth inning due to a left hamstring cramp.

Morneau and Charlie Blackmon had two hits for the Rockies, who earned their fourth win in five games.

              Tigers 5, Twins 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- Detroit got three hits from Jose Iglesias and a quality start from left-hander David Price in a win against Minnesota at Target Field.

Iglesias finished a double short of the cycle, hitting his first homer of the season to get the Tigers on the board in the first.

Price got the win, improving to 2-1 on the season, allowing three earned runs on six hits and two walks over 6 1/3 innings of work. Both of Price’s wins this season have come against Minnesota.

              Dodgers 8, Giants 3

LOS ANGELES -- Joc Pederson and pinch-hitter Justin Turner homered, and Los Angeles rolled to a victory over San Francisco before 46,704 at Dodger Stadium.

Pederson went deep off reliever George Kontos in the sixth for his fifth home run this season. Turner added a three-run blast --- his first homer of the season --- in the eighth off Yusmeiro Petit for the final margin. Pederson also made a nifty grab of a drive to the wall in center by Giants center fielder Angel Pagan to double off Nori Aoki in the first inning.

Dodgers reliever Carlos Frias (1-0) worked 1 1/3 innings, helping the National League West-leading Dodgers capture their eighth in a row at home.

              Astros 9, Padres 4

SAN DIEGO -- Jed Lowrie, Jason Castro and Colby Rasmus hit home runs, and Houston defeated San Diego for its fourth consecutive win.

The Astros broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the eighth inning off reliever Joaquin Benoit (3-1), then added two more in the ninth on Rasmus' homer.

George Springer scored the go-ahead run in the eighth when catcher Derek Norris' throw to third on Springer's steal attempt sailed into left field for an error.
