    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Royals-White Sox game was suspended at 2-2 in 8th inning Friday night; it will be resumed Saturday, before the regularly scheduled game.

-- Mariners 2, Twins 0-- Two complete games; no walks, 18 strikeouts.

-- Rockets 130, Mavericks 128-- Houston was 13-24 from arc, Howard grabbed 26 rebounds in a game that didn't have that many missed shots.

    -- Spurs 100, Clippers 73-- LA starters were a combined minus-130. Oy.

-- Rangers 2, Penguins 1 OT-- Four of five series games ended up 2-1.

-- Five of the eight NBA playoff series are 3-0. No bueno.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

    13) Why would the Rangers trade for Josh Hamilton? They shed themselves of his issues and huge contract, now they're going back down that road, while at same time letting a division rival off the hook from a bad situation.

Am very curious to see how much the Angels are going to eat of the $83M that Hamilton is still owed on that contract.

    12) How come I didn't know The Rock and Billy Bob Thornton were in a movie together? Faster, a 2010 movie that was on cable the other night. Not bad.

    11) Could we put in a rule that if an NBA playoff series was 3-0, it was then declared over? Teams down 3-0 are now 0-110 in NBA playoff series, all-time.

Hear me out; think how much better a Game 3 would be if the home team was down 2-0; not only would they be trying to stay alive in Game 3, they'd be buying themselves at least two extra games with a win-- if they stayed alive in Game 3, then it is 2-1 in a best-of-7 series. Would make things more interesting.

Its kind of like ping pong, where you play to 21 but if its 11-0, then its over.

    10) Royals-White Sox had a near fracas in Thursday's game, during which Sox TV announcer Hawk Harrelson went off on the air, saying Yordano Ventura "....was going to get his fanny beat". Harrelson is in his 70's; he was a hothead in his playing days and hasn't cooled down too much in the broadcast booth.

    9) Why did the Red Sox give Rick Porcello $20M a year? He is 77-65, 4.34 in 183 career starts for a very good Detroit team- thats worth $20M a year?

    8) Glad to see Providence guard Kris Dunn is coming back to school next season; kids who come back will become better players and improve their draft stock in the long run. Friars will need Dunn to score more next year.

    7) The Governor of Colorado is named John Hickenlooper. Unusual name.

    6) Gambling can be fun; it can be frustrating; if you bet the under in last night's Houston-Oakland game, the gambling gods owe you one. Game was 0-0 after nine innings, but the bullpens imploded and Houston wound up winning 5-4, going over the total by two runs, after being scoreless thru nine innings.

    5) One of the new owners of the Atlanta Hawks is Grant Hill.

    4) Friend of mine was in San Antonio couple weeks ago; he is on elevator in his hotel and who gets on but Rockets' coach Kevin McHale. Glad to report McHale is a good guy, just like he seems to be on TV.

    3) If you're not old enough to remember the old ABA, they played very fast-paced basketball; just picture last night's Houston-Dallas game, except with a red, white and blue basketball. 130-128 happened all the time back then.

    2) There were more than 100 people lined up outside a sneaker store in Las Vegas Friday, waiting to buy the new Flight 23 sneakers. I mean they're not going to run out of sneakers, why wait on line for them? Lot of money in the sneaker industry, which is why athlete endorsers make so much $$$$

    1) Tampa Bay Lightning were down 2-0 with 6:00 to play in Detroit in Game 4 of their series; a loss would've left them in dire straits, but Lightning scored twice in 1:14, then won in OT and their radio announcer Dave Mishkin was very happy, as in really, really happy.

Padres RHP Kelley lands on 15-day DL

The San Diego Padres placed right-handed reliever Shawn Kelley on the 15-day disabled list Friday and recalled right-hander Kevin Quackenbush from Triple-A El Paso.

Kelley has a strained left calf and will be eligible to return May 8.

Kelley is 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA in six relief appearances (5 1/3 innings).

"It's probably something that's not going to take too long or very serious, but the nature of our games, they need us out there every night," Kelley told U-T San Diego. "I'm going to take advantage of it to continue working on what I've been working on and get my calf healed up. When that's good to go, I'll get in some games and get back."

Quackenbush has a 1.50 ERA in five games with El Paso.

"I'm happy to be back. This team's playing great. I'm looking forward to being part of it," Quackenbush said.

MLB roundup: Yankees end Mets' winning streak

NEW YORK -- Right-hander Michael Pineda pitched effectively into the eighth inning and first baseman Mark Teixeira homered twice Friday night, leading the New York Yankees to a 6-1 victory over the New York Mets, who had their 11-game winning streak snapped.

Pitching in frigid conditions with a game-time temperature of 46 degrees and while wearing short sleeves, Pineda held the Mets to one run and five hits over 7 2/3 innings. Pineda struck out seven without a walk and pitched into the eighth for the fifth time in his 45 career starts.

While Pineda (3-0) pitched effectively, it took three swings for the Yankees to grab control and win for the eighth time in 11 games.

Teixeira had his 38th multi-homer game and first since July 9 at Cleveland. He hit two-run home runs in the first and third inning against Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom (2-2).

Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury hit a solo home run and second baseman Stephen Drew lifted a sacrifice fly for the Yankees, who won a home game against the Mets for the first time since June 10, 2012.

          Indians 13, Tigers 1

DETROIT -- Brandon Moss drove in seven runs -- five with a pair of home runs plus two with a double -- and Danny Salazar struck out a career-best 11 batters in seven innings to help send Detroit to its fourth straight loss.

The right-handed Salazar (2-0) allowed six hits and walked three in his second start since being recalled from the minors.

Detroit scored 25 runs in a three-game sweep of Cleveland April 10-12 but has scored just 31 in 11 games since.

The Indians packed their lineup with left-handers against right-hander Shane Greene, who suffered his first loss.

          Rays 12, Blue Jays 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- James Loney hit a two-run homer and a double in his return from the 15-day disabled list to lift the Rays.

Catcher Rene Rivera and designated hitter Tim Beckham also hit two-run homers as the Rays (9-8) won their third consecutive game.

Reliever Jose Dominguez went 1 2/3 innings to get his first career win and Matt Andriese notched his first career save.

          Phillies 1, Braves 0

PHILADELPHIA -- First baseman Freddie Freeman's ninth-inning error allowed the game's only run to score.

Freeman's miscue, his second of the game and the fourth by the Braves, made a winner of Philadelphia reliever Ken Giles (1-0). Jim Johnson (1-2) took the loss for the Braves, who have dropped four straight.

Shortstop Freddy Galvis, who went 3-for-4, led off the ninth with a single. Pinch hitter Cesar Hernandez, batting for Giles, sacrificed him to second. Galvis took third on a passed ball by catcher A.J. Pierzynski, and with the infield in, left fielder Ben Revere bounced a ball to Freeman. He was unable to field it cleanly, and Galvis scored.

          Marlins 3, Nationals 2

MIAMI -- Third baseman Martin Prado hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the eighth inning to lead Miami to its third straight win and send Washington to its third straight loss.

Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria started the winning rally with a lead-off double, advancing to third on second baseman Dee Gordon's infield single. Prado then went the other way and delivered the game-winner on a liner to right field.

The Nationals lost despite two RBIs by right fielder Bryce Harper, who went 2-for-2 with a walk.

          Red Sox 7, Orioles 5

BALTIMORE -- Brock Holt hit a tie-breaking three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to lead Boston past Baltimore, which lost its fifth straight game.

With the game tied at 4-4, pinch-hitter Allen Craig hit what looked like an inning-ending grounder to third baseman Manny Machado with two outs in the eighth, but the third baseman missed it.

That put runners at first and third, and Holt hit his three-run blast off right-hander Darren O'Day.

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz hit a three-run homer in the fifth and left fielder Hanley Ramirez followed that with a solo homer.

          Cardinals 3, Brewers 0

MILWAUKEE -- Jayson Heyward and Jhonny Peralta each hit his second home runs of the season and Carlos Martinez pitched seven shutout innings to lead St. Louis.

Peralta was 3-for-4, and Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter had two hits extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

Martinez improved to 2-0, limiting Milwaukee to four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

          Cubs 7, Reds 3 (11 innings)

CINCINNATI -- Jonathan Herrera's RBI single drove home the go-ahead run, sparking a four-run 11th inning to lift the Cubs in the opener of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park.

Catcher David Ross added a two-run double in the 11th inning off Burke Badenhop (0-1), who gave up four runs on four hits in an inning of work.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo and left fielder Chris Coghlan homered for Chicago (9-7) off Reds starter Mike Leake.

          Mariners 2, Twins 0

SEATTLE -- Felix Hernandez threw his first complete game, and his first shutout, since 2012 to give the Mariners (7-9) their second consecutive win and their fourth in six games.

Hernandez scattered six hits while striking out nine. He threw 102 pitches to record his first complete game since beating the Twins 1-0 on Aug. 27, 2012.

Solo home runs by Nelson Cruz and Logan Morrison provided all the offense Hernandez would need.

          Rockies 6, Giants 4

DENVER -- The Rockies fell behind three times, but they came back to get their

third straight win and end the Giants three-game winning streak.

Eddie Butler (3-1) allowed four runs in six innings but ended up the winning pitcher when the Rockies chased Giants starter Chris Heston (2-2) during their three-run sixth that put them on top 6-4.

Right fielder Carlos Gonzalez broke an 0-for-16 slide in the sixth with a leadoff double. Pinch hitter Rafael Ynoa had a two-run double in the inning, and right fielder Corey Dickerson added a run-scoring single.

          Pirates 4, Diamondbacks 1

PHOENIX -- Pittsburgh right-hander Gerrit Cole gave up one run in 7 2/3 innings, and third baseman Josh Harrison had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Pirates

Cole (3-0) has won his last seven decisions since Sept. 7, 2014, the most victories in the major leagues in that stretch. He gave up seven hits, struck out seven and walked two.

          Angels 3, Rangers 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- David Freese's two-run home run off reliever Keone Kela in the seventh inning lifted the Angels past Texas.

Freese's homer made a winner of Angels starting pitcher Garrett Richards, who gave up two runs and three hits in seven innings, but stood to lose the game if not for Freese's big hit.

Angels reliever Joe Smith pitched a scoreless eighth, and Huston Street did the same in the ninth for his sixth save.

          Dodgers 3, Padres 0

SAN DIEGO -- Behind the stellar pitching of Zack Greinke, the Dodgers ended a three-game losing streak.

Greinke (3-0) limited the Padres to four hits and three walks while striking out seven over seven innings. Three Dodgers relievers pitched the final two innings, with Yimi Garcia earning his first major-league save in two chances this year.

The Padres have lost three straight and have not scored in 14 consecutive innings.

          Astros 5, A's 4 (11 innings)

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Left fielder Robbie Grossman hit a tie-breaking, two-run single in the top of the 11th inning, and the Astros held on for the win.

Grossman hit off Eric O'Flaherty that gave Houston a 4-2 lead, and George Springer added a run-scoring single off Fernando Abad, making it 5-2

The A's, who had pulled even with two runs in the bottom of the 10th, nearly did it again in the bottom of the 11th.

Shortstop Marcus Semien hit a two-run home to make it 5-4, and the A's then got a runner to second with no one out, but failed to score the tying run.

White Sox 2, Royals 2 (suspended)

CHICAGO -- A steady rain made conditions at U.S. Cellular Field unplayable, stopping the game in the top of the ninth inning with the score tied 2-2.

Play will resume 2:10 p.m. EST Saturday before the originally scheduled game, which will begin shortly after the conclusion of Friday night's game. Rain is expected throughout the day.
