    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Odds on NBA first round playoff series

    -- Chicago -$750 vs Milwaukee +$500

    -- Cleveland -$3,500 vs Boston +$1,500

    -- Toronto -$190 vs Washington +$165

    -- Atlanta -$1,500 vs Brooklyn +$800

    -- Houston -$330 vs Dallas +$265

-- San Antonio -$185 vs LA Clippers +$160

-- Golden State -$5,000 vs New Orleans +$1,800

    -- Memphis -$165 vs Portland +$140

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

    13) Cubs finally brought Kris Bryant up to big leagues; he stayed in minors for 12 days, meaning the Cubs keep him until club control for an extra year, which is a terrible rule. Its also against the rules for Cubs to do that, but they did it.

    12) Odd thing is that Bryant never played a home game this year in AAA; his team won on road in Memphis/New Orleans. Wonder where all his stuff is? He has gone from spring training to AAA and now to the big leagues.

    11) NHL has done an excellent job miking its players, showing locker room scenes after games, doing NFL Films-type stuff. Well done. Playoff hockey is first-class entertainment.

    10) If you care about such things, there are 3,073 names on the Stanley Cup.

    9) One last hockey note: the St Louis Blues made the Stanley Cup finals their first three years in existence (1968-70), went 0-12 in those three series but have not been back in the finals since.

League expanded from six to 12 teams in 1967; all six new teams were in the Western Conference, meaning one of the new teams would be in the finals every year. St Louis was the best of those teams, but their fans have had a very long wait to win a Stanley Cup.

    8) There is a Senator from Oklahoma named James Lankford; I know nothing about the guy, but I'm hearing him on TV as I type this-- he has a tremendous voice. He could make a fortune doing voiceovers on commercials.

    7) Adrian Peterson was re-instated by the NFL; next question is, will he stay on the Vikings, or get traded somewhere else (Dallas???)?

    6) There are four NBA teams who finished in the top 10 this year, in efficency on both offense and defense: Spurs-Hawks-Warriors-Trailblazers.

    5) High school athletes sign with the college head coach more than they do with the college itself; Dominic Green signed with Arizona State last fall, but he has re-opened his recruitment, with Herb Sendek getting fired. Green shoots it well, is considered a top 150 recruit.

    4) UNLV is having a very good week; Stephen Zimmerman signed with the Rebels this week- he is a local 7-footer who played for Dave Rice's brother in high school at Bishop Gorman. Nigel Williams-Goss may also go to UNLV after transferring from Washington- he would be a tremendous get for the Rebels, and he has two years left in college.

I'm told that when local boosters were clamoring for Rice's head right after the season ended, Zimmerman's mom sent UNLV's AD an e-mail that said her son wouldn't play for the Rebels if Rice got fired. Take that, boosters.........

    3) There will soon be a college basketball tournament in the Cayman Islands, much like the event in Atlantis every November. More basketball is good!!!!

    2) Do you think these NFL prospects get tired of all these interviews they do with teams? They're only going to play for one team, but half the league has been picking their brains. Has to be tiring for a young person.

    1) If NFL Network ever wants to do a great reality show, they should show us an inside peek at how the schedule is made up every year. This year's schedule hasn't been finished yet and it looks like it will be released later than usual.

Can underdogs dominate NBA Playoffs betting like last year?

NBA betting underdogs were unleashed in Round 1 of the NBA Playoffs last year, going an incredible 32-19-1 ATS (with one pick’em game) and covering the spread at a near 63 percent rate.

And that was the story for most of the 2014 postseason as well, as NBA underdogs finished the playoffs with a 52-36-1 ATS mark (57.8 percent). That Round 1 trend bled over into the conference semifinals, where underdogs finished 14-9 ATS, then went south in the conference finals (3-9 ATS) before showing up a bit in the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs (3-2 ATS).

So, will basketball bettors see similar success blindly betting the underdog when the 2015 NBA Playoffs start Saturday?

“With the Western Conference, it’s a lot closer than the Eastern Conference this year,” Mark Tomita, assistant manager at the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas tells Covers. “The West looks pretty wide open this year.”

Tomita does expect the public to come in heavy on the notable favorites, like Golden State and Cleveland, but says early money has already taken San Antonio, which is a 1.5-point pup at the Los Angeles Clippers Sunday.

As for which playoff teams hold the most underdog value, here are the top NBA underdog bets this season:

New Orleans Pelicans - 26-13 ATS
      Boston Celtics - 31-17 ATS
      Milwaukee Bucks - 29-20-1 ATS
      Atlanta Hawks – 12-9-1 ATS
      Houston Rockets - 16-12 ATS
      Memphis Grizzlies – 13-10 ATS

In a cruel twist of this trend, NBA bettors should beware of double-digit NBA Playoff underdogs. Since the 2003 NBA Playoffs, when Round 1 went to a best-of-seven format from best-of-five, double-digit dogs are just 29-42-3 ATS (6-68 SU) in the postseason - covering just 41 percent of the time.

There are a pair of double-digit underdogs on the board for this weekend’s games: New Orleans +11 at Golden State, and Boston +11 at Cleveland. Those two teams, as shown above, just so happen to be the top underdog bets in the NBA this season.

Underdog-heavy results are a double-edged sword for sportsbooks. While the general public gravitates towards the big-name favorites, the sharp bettors tend to take the points in the NBA Playoffs. This is especially true with some of the earlier weekday postseason time slots – the 7 p.m. ET starts – which are on at 4 p.m. in Nevada.

These weekday afternoon games in Las Vegas don’t get much walk-in traffic from tourists and conference goers, which leaves the books to go one-on-one with the wiseguys in the opening round of the NBA Playoffs, with little money from the betting public to limit liability.

“The midweek people aren't getting engaged until after 5 p.m. and it makes the late games much more attractive, since they can come in and place a bet and have a beer,” Jay Rood, vice president of race and sports from MGM properties in Las Vegas, told Covers last April. “That leaves us going head-to-head with sharps in the early games. So if the underdogs are covering in those early midweek games, it’s not good for us.”

Last year’s early underdog trend did pull a fair share of public bettors away from the favorites. Rood said that NBA regular season games will see an 80/20 split of money on the favorite and underdog but that difference drops to 75/25 in the postseason.

As for the regular season giving any hints of how the playoffs could lean, oddsmakers did their job handicapping the games. Favorites and underdogs split, each going 601-601-27 ATS on the year.

The truth behind betting the Zig-Zag Theory in the NBA Playoffs

In NBA betting circles, Zig-Zags are trendy applications that have been profitable moneymakers during the playoffs. The premise is simple: Bet a team off a playoff loss in its very next game.

The theory is that in a short series involving imminent elimination, a team in more inclined to bounce back with a good effort off a losing performance than it is to continue its losing ways.

How have these plays held up of late? You might be surprised. Here are pointspread results of NBA Playoff Zig-Zags from 1991 through 2014.

        Game On, Dude

        Overall: 786-693-37 • 53.1 percent
        Game 2: 195-153-13 • 54.7 percent
        Game 3: 195-159-6 • 55.1 percent
        Game 4: 159-163-8 • 49.4 percent
        Game 5: 128-121-6 • 51.4 percent
        Game 6: 79-70-2 • 53.0 percent
        Game 7: 30-27-2 • 52.6 percent

The strength of NBA Zig-Zags appears to be in Game 3 where they become a better than 55 percent pointspread play on the blind.

        Burn baby burn

Like all things that are popular, though, they eventually burn out and revert back to the norm.

A combination of the law of averages and an adjustment by the oddsmakers has seen the NBA Zig-Zags go up in smoke since 2001.

That’s confirmed by the fact that these plays slipped dramatically the last 14 years (2001-2014), going 475-444-27– or 51.6 percent - overall as opposed to a 311-249-10 mark – or 55.5 percent - in games played from 1991-2000.

That’s a decline of nearly four full percentage points. Talk about a buzz kill.

        Round ‘em up

Here is a breakdown of how the Zig-Zags have fared during each round of the NBA Playoffs since 1991:

        Round 1: 377-330-21 • 53.3 percent
        Round 2: 235-205-7 • 53.4 percent
        Round 3: 116-108-6 • 51.8 percent
        Round 4: 58-50-3 • 53.7 percent

While it appears there is no discernable edge between rounds, it should be noted that home teams off a double-digit loss in Round 2 have delivered the largest profits, as they are 80-51-3.

        Planting the seed

Here is a breakdown of how the Zig Zags have fared by seed during NBA Playoffs:

        No. 1 Seeds: 110-101-5 • 52.1 percent
        No. 2 Seeds: 107-86-4 • 55.4 percent
        No. 3 Seeds: 91-80-9 • 53.2 percent
        No. 4 Seeds: 79-71-1• 52.7 percent
        No. 5 Seeds: 72-68-2• 51.4 percent
        No. 6 Seeds: 62-55-2• 53.0 percent
        No. 7 Seeds: 42-61-4• 40.8 percent
        No. 8 Seeds: 62-44-5 • 58.5 percent

Note these results are since the 1996 season, when our database first began charting seeds.

Note the disparate results that abound between No. 7 and No. 8 seeds.

        Rocky Mountain high

So when is it we can still expect to catch the best possible result when firing up with these with NBA Zig-Zags these days, you ask?

Simple. Look to back double-digit underdogs when they are off a SU and ATS loss. They’ve stood the test of time, going 33-18-2 ATS since 1991. That’s a pretty high 64.7 percent winning percentage when you think about it.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB betting cheat sheet: Small ball producing big results for A’s
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for this weekend’s major-league schedule:

A’s get an A for batting average

Not a single Oakland Athletic has left the yard more than once through 10 games. Billy Butler and a handful of others are leading the team with all of one home run. But a whopping five regulars—including Butler at .359—are batting .300 or better. As such, the A’s have scored 56 runs and are 7-3 O/U. Next up is a three-game slate with the Kansas City Royals (5-3 O/U).

              Here come the Dodgers

Since starting the 2015 campaign 2-3 (3-2 O/U), the Los Angeles Dodgers have won four in a row (3-1 O/U). Adrian Gonzalez is batting a ridiculous .528 with five homers and nine RBIs. With Gonzalez on fire and a weekend series against the Colorado Rockies upcoming, L.A. has to be feeling good. In the most recent series between the two NL West rivals last September (also in L.A.), the Dodgers swept by a combined score of 23-14 (3-0 O/U).

              They’ve got his number

Something will have to give when Ubaldo Jimenez pays a visit to Fenway Park for a date with the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Jimenez gave up only one hit and no runs while striking out eight during his first start of the season, a 7-1 blowout of the Toronto Blue Jays last Saturday. But in three outings vs. Boston in 2014 he went 0-1 with a 6.60 ERA in three starts, including a 7.00 ERA in two appearances at Fenway.

              Pitching Notes

              * David Price is getting the start on Friday afternoon. That is great news for the Detroit Tigers and terrible news for the Chicago White Sox. That’s because Price has not given up a single run in 14.1 innings this season and boasts 0.84 WHIP to go along with his perfect ERA. The Tigers are 8-1 so far (5-4 O/U) and 2-0 (1-1 O/U) when Price starts. The southpaw is 1-4 O/U in his last five outings dating back to last year.

              * It has been open season on Milwaukee Brewers’ starter Kyle Lohse in 2015. The 36-year-old is 0-2 with an 11.17 ERA after allowing 18 hits and 12 runs in 9.2 innings. Not surprisingly, Milwaukee is 2-0 O/U when Lohse takes the bump and 5-3 O/U in Lohse’s last eight dating back to 2014. The veteran’s next outing is Saturday at the Pittsburgh Pirates, against whom he went 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts last season.

              Hitting Notes

              * The Boston Red Sox are tied for the major-league lead in runs scored (56) and they are first in runs per game. Thank you, Hanley Ramirez. The left fielder is batting .278 with four home runs and nine RBIs. No team has gone over the total with more consistency than Boston (8-1 O/U). It has an upcoming weekend series against AL East rival Baltimore (6-2-1 O/U).

              * Is it Panik time for the San Francisco Giants? The defending World Series champions are 3-7 (4-6 O/U) and have crossed the plate only 26 times, third fewest in the National League. Second baseman Joe Panik is hitting .176 and shortstop Brandon Crawford has a .152 average. They have combined for four RBIs in 67 at-bats.

              Totals Streak

Houston Astros (2-7 O/U): The under is no better than 5-3 with any other team in Major League Baseball as of Thursday afternoon, but it is 7-2 in games involving the Astros. They have scored only 23 runs, tied for third fewest in the entire league. Dallas Keuchel (1.29 ERA, 1.07 WHIP), who is scheduled to take the mound on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels, is 2-9 O/U in his last 11 starts dating back to last season.

              Injury Notes

              * New York Mets’ third baseman David Wright suffered a strained right hamstring while stealing a base on Tuesday and went on the disabled list the next day. Eric Campbell was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas and is expected to be the Mets’ everyday third baseman while Wright is out. In eight games with the veteran all-star, New York was 5-3 O/U.

              * The Kansas City Royals are 7-0 (5-2 O/U) with Alex Rios (.321, 1 HR, 8 RBI) in the lineup and 0-1 (0-1 O/U) without him. They will have to get used to Rios being absent, because the right fielder sustained a fracture in his left hand on Monday and will miss three to six weeks.

Overs a scorching wager in Mets-Marlins meetings

In the past 11 contests between the Mets and Marlins the Over has cashed 10 times, with a push on one occasion.

The two teams have plated an average of 10.5 runs while tallying 19.5 hits per game dating back to Jun 22, 2014. Seven of those 11 contests happened in NYC and Citi Field, with all seven of those going over with the Mets giving home fans a show and averaging 6.5 runs.

The Marlins are expected to start David Phelps on the mound, which may provide some added bang for the Mets lineup. Phelps has yet to start this season, but despite very limited exposure, has posted a 36.00 ERA. Bartolo Colon (2.77 ERA) is slated to get the ball for the Mets.

Philadelphia is expected to start Sean O'Sullivan in Game 2 of their series with the Nationals Friday.

Under goes 3-1 on Blue Jays' new AstroTurf

It has been well documented that the new turf in Toronto's Rogers Centre could be a treasure trove for Under bettors, and the results from their first series of the season look promising.

The Under went 3-1 in four games with the Tampa Bay Rays in town to break in the new AstroTurf.

The Jays host the Atlanta Braves for a weekend series beginning Friday. Oddsmakers have the opener tabbed with a total of 8.
