Blues to start Allen in goal in Game 1

          April 15, 2015

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Blues are riding the hot hand in goal into the playoffs. There was never a doubt who'd be minding the nets for the Minnesota Wild.

Blues coach Ken Hitchcock ended the intrigue on Wednesday, a day ahead of the opener of the best-of-seven series, choosing rookie Jake Allen over veteran Brian Elliott.

''It was a week ago I said one guy's had a great season and one guy's had a great last six weeks, and we opted to go with the guy that's had the great six weeks,'' Hitchcock said. ''Either way, it's a decision that we couldn't be wrong with, to be honest with you.''

The Wild counter with their own rising star. Devan Dubnyk started 39 of the last 40 games and keyed the franchise's rise from fourth worst in the Western Conference to a wild card spot pitting them against the Central Division champions.

Dubnyk had a 1.78 goals-against average with Minnesota, second-best in the NHL. In mid-January, getting the 28-year-old backup from the Coyotes cost the Wild only a third-round draft pick. Dubnyk had 41 saves in a victory in St. Louis in March during the Wild's NHL record-tying 12-game road winning streak.

''Yeah, that's a big game and I think that's a good one to hold onto, too,'' Dubnyk said.

Just like Wild coach Mike Yeo, Hitchcock wants to stick with one goalie in the playoffs. But there are no assurances for Allen past the opener.

''Everything's game to game at this time,'' the coach said. ''Day to day. The whole world. If we've got to make a change, we'll make a change.''

The 24-year-old Allen was 5-1-1 with 1.32 goals-against average and .950 save percentage in his last eight games. The deciding factor likely was his stout play in a pair of 2-1 victories over the rival Blackhawks.

''You always want to play. It doesn't matter if you play five games all year or 75 games, you want to get the net,'' Allen said. ''It's going to be a fun test for me.''

Besides the recent track record, Allen is better handling the puck than Elliott and more proactive about stopping pucks behind the net, which should lead to a better transition game.

''He's not a Marty Brodeur, who's kind of getting out of the net any chance he can get,'' All-Star defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk said. ''We can peel off and offer him a good passing option if he needs it.''

The Wild finished with 100 points, nine behind the Blues, but took the season series 2-1-1. Things to watch for in the series that begins Thursday in St. Louis:

          ROAD TESTED

Rather than go all-out for a record 13th straight road victory in the season finale in St. Louis on Saturday, the Wild dialed it back - just like the Blues - and Dubnyk came out after two periods of a 4-2 loss. During the streak that began on Feb. 18, Dubnyk never allowed more than two goals. He also won twice in Nashville and also in Chicago.

''We're certainly not worried about the last game of the year; that didn't count much,'' Dubnyk said.

          WATCHING AGAIN

The 30-year-old Elliott didn't appear in the playoffs last year after the Blues acquired Ryan Miller, then flamed out in a first-round loss to Chicago. He was 26-14-3 with a 2.26 goals-against average and five shutouts but played just twice in the last six games, including the finale.

          CENTRAL DOMINANCE

The division was the strongest in the NHL with four 100-point teams, and defending champion Colorado didn't make the playoffs. The Blues surged past Nashville with a 13-6-3 finish while the Wild was an NHL-best 26-8-2 after the All-Star break.

          READY TO ROLL

Shattenkirk was among the regulars rested by the Blues in the finale, in order to get more healing time from abdominal surgery that sidelined him from early February to late March.

''It's key coming into a time when I'm not going to have any rest,'' Shattenkirk said.

The Wild are deep at forward since the early return of Jason Zucker from a broken collarbone and the March acquisition of former Blues winger Chris Stewart. Zucker, who was third on the team with 21 goals, missed the playoffs last season with a knee injury.

''It was tough, it was definitely very tough,'' Zucker said. ''It's part of the business, and that's behind me and I'm just ready to go this year.''

Crashing Penguins face poor matchup in Rangers

The Pittsburgh Penguins are limping into the playoffs, with just one win in their past six games, and may be facing off against the last team they've wanted to see in the New York Rangers.

The Pens have dropped six of the last seven against the Broadway Blueshirts, while being outscored 26-11. The slumping Pittsburgh offense has only averaged 1.7 goals per game over their past 15 games.

The Penguins are currently +155 when they travel to Madison Square Garden Thursday.

Important stat to predicting Stanley Cup winner

              Apr 15, 2015

Though many will say ride the hot goalies come the Stanley Cup playoffs, there is one stat that has proven to be a solid indicator as to who ends the NHL season with the chalice.

In the past 21 years only one team has entered the playoffs with a negative shot differential and win Lord Stanley's Cup. Compare that to 90 percent of the winning teams finishing the season in the top 10 if shot differential.

Below is a breakdown of shot differential for all the NHL Playoff teams:

              1. New York Islanders (+5.5)

              3. St. Louis Blues (+3.7)

              4. Chicago Blackhawks (+3.7)

              5. Nashville Predators (+3.6)

              7. Minnesota Wild (+3.1)

              8. Pittsburgh Penguins (+2.4)

              9. New York Rangers (+2.0)

              11. Tampa Bay Lightning (+1.7)

              12. Detroit Red Wings (+1.3)

              16. Anaheim Ducks (+1.1)

              17. Winnipeg Jets (+1.1)

              19. Vancouver Canucks (+0.1)

              21. Ottawa Senators (-1.2)

              23. Montreal Canadiens (-1.7)

              24. Calgary Flames (-1.7)

Mets put David Wright on 15-day DL

                April 15, 2015

NEW YORK (AP) - Mets captain David Wright is being put on the 15-day disabled list, a day after straining his right hamstring.

Wright was injured during Wednesday's game against Philadelphia.

New York said Thursday that infielder-outfielder Eric Campbell is being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League.

Nats place Stammen on 15-day DL

                  April 15, 2015

BOSTON (AP) - The Washington Nationals have placed right-hander Craig Stammen on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with right forearm stiffness.

To take his place on the roster, the club recalled 26-year old right-hander Taylor Jordan from Triple-A Syracuse.

The 31-year old Stammen appeared in five games - all in relief - without allowing a run in four innings.

Manager Matt Williams said Stammen told him ''he was sore'' when he checked in with his pitchers as he usually does.

Jordan made one start for Syracuse, allowing two hits in six scoreless innings. It's his first time in the majors this season.

                          Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Miami Heat played four starters 48 minutes last night; I've never seen that before in an NBA game. Fifth starter played 41 minutes; one sub played 7:00. Weird.

-- In their first nine games, Phillies are 0-8-1 in first five innings.

-- Orioles scored in first inning in seven of their first nine games.

                          -- Houston is 4-0 when Keuchel/McHugh start, 0-5 otherwise.

-- Pelicans made NBA playoffs, supposedly saving Monty Williams' job, which is kind of sad, one game of 82 determining his fate.

-- How happy is Derek Fisher that this nightmare of a season is over?

                          **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

                          13) Chicago 4, Nashville 3 OT-- Not often a winning goalie in an NHL playoff game is a non-starter; Predators led 3-0, blew the game, now Chicago has home ice in this series. Nashville has only won two playoff series in franchise history this is no way to win #3.

                          12) How great is overtime in playoff hockey? Nothing else like it in sports.

                          11) USA Network has NHL playoff games for first time in 30 years, when Al Albert (now is Phoenix Suns' announcer) and former coach Gary Green did the games. Why doesn't ESPN have any NHL games?

                          10) NFL Draft is in two weeks in Chicago; 26 players will be there, but neither of the top two picks, QBs Winston/Mariota will be there. You would hope their agents will at least make them available for TV interviews that night.

                          9) There is a guy who travelled to see all 82 Knick games this year, at his own expense, and now he wants to write a book about it. If nothing else, he should get a free pass into a mental ward for doing this.

                          8) Brooklyn Nets have to pay $11M in luxury tax, most of any NBA team. At least they got into the playoffs-- ironic that Lionel Hollins got into the NBA playoffs when his old team the Grizzlies knocked Indiana out last night.

                          7) Lance Stephenson made 18-105 (17.1%) from arc this season, the worst %age ever for an NBA player who took 100+ 3's in a season.

                          6) We live in an impatient society; Boston Bruins fired their GM Wednesday, four years after they won the Stanley Cup, one year after they had the best record in the NHL's regular season. No one has patience anymore- they missed out on the playoffs by a game and now heads have rolled. Doesn't seem fair.

                          5) Atlants Hawks went 60-22 this season, despite no player scoring 30+ points in any game this season. Elias says that has never happened before for any team that won 50+ games-- the Hawks won 60 games!!!!

                          4) All three of VCU's incoming recruits begged out of their letters of intent after Shaka Smart bolted for Texas. New coach Will Wade has his work cut out for him mantaining the Rams' talent level in the near future.

                          3) Bad week for the Arkansas Razorbacks, with Portis/Qualls both going pro; Mike Anderson hasn't had to deal with early departures very often. Anderson's system is dependent on depth and talent; these departures greatly reduce both.

                          2) Flames 2, Canucks 1-- Calgary scored with 0:29.6 left to upset Vancouver 2-1 and grab home ice advantage in their first round series.

                          1) Houston Rockets got the #2 seed in the West; James Harden got a triple double last night in their 117-91 win over the Jazz Wednesday.
