sorry its so late...but hopefully its a winner
SANTA ANITA -- Race #6 -- AWESOME JET (#10)
__________________________________________________ __________________
Today's 6th race is a Maiden Special Weight route for three year olds. Par for this level is a 101. It looks like Bob Baffert is determined to find out whether or not he has any truly promising three year olds in this race. "Bullet Bob" will be sending out a "Three Headed Monster" in TICE (12-1), ONE SMART DEPUTY (5-2) and STANDING BRAVE (12-1). Based on our speed figures report, it would appear that ONE SMART DEPUTY may have the best chance among those three. His most recent figures of 96-97-102+ are clearly best of the trio. However, ONE SMART DEPUTY is far from a "lock" to break his maiden in this his fifth attempt.
Much like yesterday's Spot Play winner, we will stay with the "Any Kind" angle. A young three year old like AWESOME JET is what we mean by "any kind". This son of Awesome Again will be making only his second lifetime start while stretching out in distance for the first time. Awesome Again babies tend to really launch forward with the added furlongs. AWESOME JET looked like a three year old crying out for more distance in his one and only start. That day AWESOME JET earned figures of 91-97+ gaining every step of the way in a race slightly better than par. His fourth place finish included a final 5/16th just under 31 seconds. Today's 1 1/16 miles race should be much more to the liking of an AWESOME JET.
If today's spot play is truly any kind, I would expect AWESOME JET to win in style with P Val aboard. The main dangers would be ONE SMART DEPUTY, QUASIMODO and WANNAWINEMALL. Those three contenders come out of the common race run on January 30th. I really only like AWESOME JET so I may not want to spread too deep in the exotics. A straight wager will again be my focus. Good luck!
