SANTA ANITA -- Race #1 -- BOURBON PARTY (#4)
__________________________________________________ __________________
The 1st race today is a $10,000 claiming route at 1-1/16 miles. Par is 100. BOURBON PARTY (5-2) is a clear cut choice in here and should get the day started off right. BOURBON PARTY has won 2 of his 4 attempts at this 1-1/16 mile distance (in fact those are his only 2 lifetime wins) but has spent most of his time sprinting instead. A quick look at his last 3 sets of figures from his route races shows a win up at Bay Meadows with figures of 104-105-99, a 2nd in a strong race at Del Mar with figures of 102-103-92+, and a 3rd place last time in a huge race at the $12,500 level with figures of 90-95-102. The winner of the last race went about 4 lengths faster than the expected par, and BOURBON PARTY's 102 was actually a little faster than the typical 101 par at that level. Today he drops a level to the 100 benchmark and easily has the best last race figure. Trainer John Sadler looks like he has kept the horse sharp since the races at Del Mar and solid jockey Rene Douglas takes the call. If BOURBON PARTY runs his typical race I don't see anything else in here that could match it.
The difficult part of this race is deciding on which horse is logical to finish 2nd. JINK WILLIAMS (7-2) may get some betting but is not one of my candidates to run a good race. He has not been much of a factor beyond a 1/2 mile in most of his races at this level and distance. TALIANO (7-2) is coming off a sharp looking 2nd place finish in a sprint at Fairplex and seems to be on an improving pattern. He is my main candidate to couple with BOURBON PARTY. Smaller chances go to GOLD BIDDER and CHORY FOUR. GOLD BIDDER has a lot of 2nd place finishes and is coming off a weaker placing in an $8,000 race at Fairplex so he may be able to clunk in for 2nd. CHORY FOUR is never much of a factor in races but if BOURBON PARTY blows the race open and wins by open lengths he could pick up the distant pieces.
BOURBON PARTY is the spot play win bet and key in a main quinella to TALIANO. He usually comes from off the pace but in today's race without a lot of pace he should stalk close and then motor away from the field on the far turn. Smaller quinella keys with GOLD BIDDER and CHORY FOUR may also be used. Good luck.
