SANTA ANITA -- Race #5 -- SIP ONE FOR MOM (#8)
__________________________________________________ __________________
The 5th race is a 1-mile route for Cal-bred 2 year old fillies. Par is a 96. SIP ONE FOR MOM just ran a good 2nd in a similar race at Del Mar on September 6th. The winning figure for that race was a 100+ for the 96 level and was earned by a very good looking Neil Drysdale first time starter. SIP ONE FOR MOM is a closer that was hurt by the very slow early pace in that race but finished well with an 83-87-95+ and very nearly ran par for that race except that the impressive winner ran 5 lengths faster than par. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see SIP ONE FOR MOM come back today and get to the winner's circle. Tyler Baze rode her last time and will ride her again today. I loved the way she relaxed professionally through the early parts of the race and then allowed Tyler to get her a ground-saving trip by guiding her through traffic up the rail. When he asked her to run down the stretch she responded. She'll have to deal with an outside post in here but should be able to let the others go and move over behind them nearer the rail. If she earns another final figure near par she will be tough to beat.
The biggest dangers in here would be the Golden Eagle Farm entry of PLANNING SURPRISES or DAILY FORECAST. Both of them will be stretching out in distance for the 1st time but are fillies by Event of the Year who seems to be siring youngsters that improve their numbers when they go longer. Baffert trains one and Mike Mitchell trains the other. They are the 8-5 morning line favorite and look solid but have to deal with SIP ONE FOR MOM who's already shown the ability to earn a figure near par going this distance.
SIP ONE FOR MOM is the spot play today. Bet her to win and in a quinella with GROOVY CROWN who comes out of the same last race and got a wide trip and the 1-1A entry of PLANNING SURPRISES and DAILY FORECAST. Good luck.
