DEL MAR -- Race #5 -- DRAKE'S VICTORY (#3)
__________________________________________________ __________________
Today's 5th race is a turf mile for three year olds and upward. This first level allowance race is restricted to California breds and has a par level of 104. Based on our speed figures report, there are three contenders with competitive ratings in relation to today's par. ULTIMATO (5-1), DRAKE'S VICTORY (6-1) and LEGAL LOGIC (7-2) have all earned sharp recent figures and are deserving of spot play honors. Since each horse has a very solid trainer and jockey, our selection will have to offer good value with likely upside potential.
ULTIMATO actually comes off the strongest figures race which was a $40,000 claiming event with a 106 par. ULTIMATO utilized his front running tactics in brave fashion. ULTIMATO finished a close third (by a neck) with figures of 106-107-104+ at odds of 12-1. I never like to feel I'm chasing the numbers in this game. The odds were very high in that last race and ULTIMATO ran his career best figures to finish third. I'm also a bit nervous in his wire to wire style. Turf races usually come down to the "final say", which is why ULTIMATO will get bumped from spot play consideration.
My choice for spot play came down to the two Julio Canani runners. DRAKE'S VICTORY and LEGAL LOGIC look like a very strong uncoupled entry in this spot. LEGAL LOGIC actually has the slightly better figures but may not be the more likely winner of this race. LEGAL LOGIC is a four year old who appears stuck at this first level. His overall record is dominated by 6 second place finishes from his 10 career races. LEGAL LOGIC has burned the WIN bet players in each of his last three starts. I do like his chances for another exacta finish. But for spot play honors, I will have to side with his stable mate.
DRAKE'S VICTORY looks like a three year old on the improve. This son of Victory Gallop has a nice closing kick just like his dad had. DRAKE'S VICTORY broke his maide over the Hollywood Park turf course in only his second career start with figures of 90-99-101. For his first attempt at this N1x level, DRAKE'S VICTORY earned figures of 96-101-103+ while finishing third. For his most recent try, DRAKE'S had to face spot play winner Devil Badgett who earned better than par figures of 100-104-105+ for this same 104 level. DRAKE'S VICTORY earned "better than looked" figures of 93-99-103 while catching a wide trip for most of the race. He also lacked clear running for the stretch drive. With a cleaner trip, I expect DRAKE'S VICTORY to be right there near the wire.
I will play DRAKE'S VICTORY as the key straight bet and cover my wager with exactas to both ULTIMATO and LEGAL LOGIC. Good luck!
