DEL MAR -- Race #2 -- AIRCOBRA (#7)

Today's second race is a bottom level maiden claiming route for fillies and mares. Par for this level is a 92. Former spot play CHANEL ISLANDS (8-5) figures to get all the wagering attention even though her last three efforts fall well short of today's par. I'm sure Craig Dollase wasn't too upset to lose this filly via the claim from a $40,000 state bred sprint towards the end of Hollywood Park. New trainer Mike Mitchell dropped CHANEL ISLANDS straight to the bottom in an effort to "shock" her into the winner's circle. The big drop could only produce a well beaten fourth place finish with figures of 93-88+ for the 94 level. CHANEL ISLANDS will more than likely be sent to the lead from her rail draw in a last ditch effort to steal this race. I expect her to be a major pace factor for much of the race. However, I will play against her at very low odds.
Today's spot play honors will go to the improving AIRCOBRA (6-1). This filly comes out of a very strong race for this level run on August 13th. The heavy favorite Redmeansgo drew off from her field by more than ten lengths with figures of 89-92-97 for this same 92 level. AIRCOBRA finish second with much improved figures of 87-86-86+ while racing two turns for the first time. I think this filly is deserving of another chance under these same conditions. I can't be sure about what caused AIRCOBRA's most recent improvement. She either loves this Del Mar surface or the new route distance. Whatever the reason, it looks like AIRCOBRA is heading the right direction.
My wagering strategy will focus on that August 13th mile. I will use COCO LADY (who finished third) as one of my exotics contenders with today's spot play AIRCOBRA. To hedge my bet, I'll toss the favorite into the mix out of respect for Mike Mitchell. The late running ICEMAN MISS would be my final contender with an outside chance. Even if the favorite runs in the money, this race still has very good value with AIRCOBRA ranking as my top choice. Good luck!
