DEL MAR -- Race #7 -- NAVAJA (#5)
__________________________________________________ __________________
The 7th race is a 1st level allowance for fillies at 1-1/16 miles on the turf course. Par is a 102. NAVAJA (3-1) jumps right off the page as the spot play choice as she plots several lengths best off her 2nd place finish on August 18th. She earned a 101-105-104 in an allowance field that was much stronger than this one. She closed into a strong pace that day and was second in a tight group of 3 horses at the wire that included a sharp Mullins sprinter and a Drysdale filly that had already earned a high figure. The rest of that field was way behind those three.
That was her 2nd start in the U.S. after shipping in from New Zealand. Her first effort was a 94-96-98 on August 2nd and even though she was last early and troubled a bit down the stretch the figures are fairly competitive. She improved a ton in that 2nd start and those are the figures that put her on top of this field. Corey Nakatani is one of the best grass riders in Southern Calif. and is the regular rider of NAVAJA. Trust him to give her a relaxed position early and then get a strong rally from her late. She's not the smoothest horse to watch when it comes to switching her leads turning for home but it seems that she's learning and improving with each race and now could be all set for a win.
The rest of the contenders plot a few lengths back with a final figure around 100. SHADOW OF MINE (8-1) has not been effective against stakes fillies several times this summer but should run better in this easier spot. She earned an 89-96-98 with trouble in her first start of the summer and then followed it up with a 96-98-98+ in the Grade 2 San Clemente. Her connections keep jumping her into stakes company so they must be confident she has some quality. If she appreciates the drop back to allowance company in this 3rd start off the layoff she could be a good exacta horse at nice odds.
BALLISTIC ANGEL (7-2) will be trying for her 3rd win a row. She recently joined the Jeff Mullins barn and has suddenly looked like a win machine. The problem for her is that she was able to notch back to back wins with figures of 80-87-97 and 91-92-98. Last time out she beat a weak Cal-bred allowance field and now jumps up a bit to face open allowance horses. She's certainly sharp but with her iffy figures and far outside post it will be difficult for her to extend her win streak. A top effort may only be good enough to land her in the bottom slot of the exacta. The better figures, better post and better jockey are all on the side of NAVAJA.
NAVAJA is the spot play win bet for today and is also the key in exotics over SHADOW OF MINE and BALLISTIC ANGEL. Good luck.
