DEL MAR -- Race #7 -- VAN ROUGE (#5)
__________________________________________________ __________________
Today's 7th race is a one mile turf event for three year olds and upward. This allowance N3x race has a par level of 108. Our benchmark for this level looks a bit out of reach for this group with the exception of VAN ROUGE (9-2). This five year old horse from the John Shirreffs barn has exceeded today's 108 par level three times over his last seven starts. VAN ROUGE cleared his N2x conditions at the one mile distance with figures of 103-108-110 for the 107 level. For his most recent start, VAN ROUGE posted figures of 107-108-108+ at this same 108 level. Anything close to a repeat of that race should get top honors versus this group.
This race has multiple runners with figures in the 106 to 107 range. WILD BABE (6-1), ROYAL PRICE (2-1) and YA LAJWAAD (3-1) all come off victories in their most recent start with a final figure of 106. Those final figures are still about two lengths below the par for this level. It may take a new personal best if one of these contenders wants to win this race.
The colt most likely to give VAN ROUGE the most competition late could be ROYAL PRICE. This Bobby Frankel runner looks to be on the improve. ROYAL PRICE finished a close third with figures of 97-99-107 for his second try at the N2x level. He was able to clear those conditions on his third attempt with figures of 104-105-106+ for the 107 level. Today's 108 level could still be a length or so out of reach. I do think that ROYAL PRICE would need a new personal best to win, as long as VAN ROUGE runs his "A" race.
I can see WILD BABE grabbing the early lead and taking this field as far as he can. VAN ROUGE should be sitting a perfect stalking trip just in behind the leader. If YA LAJWAAD doesn't bounce off his last effort, he could be a factor in the stretch. ROYAL PRICE should be the most feared from off the pace. I will play VAN ROUGE as today's spot play and use ROYAL PRICE as the most logical exacta mate. Good luck!
