  • Sunday's Best Bets including big Saratoga play

YTD: -$59.50 after a solid hit on Saturday

Saratoga Race 2 Play #7 Yankee Doodle Boy
Drops in class from $40,000 claimers to $25,000 and stretches to a mile and a quarter, a distance most in here are suspect at. While he ran poorly for the higher claiming tag, he should benefit from the race over the track. Signifinantly, rider Prado stays aboard. Has won this year for both $35,000 and $25,000 claiming so he fits the class level. Play will look even stronger if #4 Happy Trails scratches as he is trained by our our horse's trainer's brother and might have been entered to make sure the race filled.

Saratoga Race 9 Gr. II Saratoga Breeders Cup Hcp. DOUBLE play on #6 Funny Cide
Makes long awaited first Saratoga appearance in hometown of several of the horse's owners. While he will take heavy betting action because he's the "hometown boy," he still presents value in a strong field. Ran two bang-up races in a row while just missing in each. Five solid workouts in a row for this, four of which are over the Saratoga track. Perfect pace scenario either on the lead or pressing The Lady's Groom. (This play should be bet at double the normal wager.)

Monmouth Race 8 Play #5 Frenchglen
Todd Pletcher trainee ships in from New York after failing against much tougher in graded stakes in Florida. Previous two races got huge speed figures. 3-for-4 lifetime at six furlongs, the distance of today's race. Wet track would help but not needed.

Del Mar Race 9 Play #3 Four Checker
Huge drop in class from a $94,000 Claiming Crown stakes in Minnesota to $20,000 claimers here. Only 5-for-42 lifetime but meets a field he towers over. Trainer 14-for-37 win or place at Del Mar this year. Just missed against similar field two back after breaking very slowly. Is a deep closer but may be closer to the lead today.

Opinion only: I like #6 Total Impact to upset Pleasantly Perfect, Perfect Drift and unbeaten Choctaw Nation in the $1,000,000 Pacific Classic at Del Mar (Race 8). Almost made it a best bet but several are sitting on huge races here. Should be a sensational race and Total Impact will go off at at least 5-1.

All bets rated at $10 to win and place, except Funny Cide who will be rated at $20 to win and place.

    Recap

An aggravating day as Yankee Doodle Boy was disqualified from the win at 3-1, costing my bankroll $40, as Edgar Prado failed to control the horse in the stretch. He would have won anyway. Grrr. He did pay $3.60 to place as small consolation. Funny Cide, under another iffy Prado ride, finished second, paying $3.00 to place on my double play. Frenchglen stunk it up finishing fourth and the Del Mar horse scratched. (This is written before my "opinion only" horse runs in the Pacific Classic).
