DEL MAR -- Race #2 -- AMA RAY (#7)

Today's second race is a $25,000 claiming route for fillies and mares. Par is a 100. This event looks like a two filly race between SMOKETTE (3-1) and AMA RAY (9-2). These two fillies seem to be very sharp at the moment and have earned figures that should be competitive at today's level.
SMOKETTE earned recent figures of 102-102-97+ versus cheaper $12,500 company. The jump in class from the 96 par level to today's 100 could cause SMOKETTE's figure to drop a bit. I like the confident bump in claiming price which tells me the trainer is very happy with his filly. I just think SMOKETTE is going to be facing a tougher field this time around and may not be able to duplicate her most recent effort.
I will give the nod to AMA RAY as today's spot play since she looks to be a much more solid fit at this level. AMA RAY beat $25,000 claimers two starts ago with figures of 104-101-99 at Hollywood Park. AMA RAY was jumped to the $32,000 level most recently and seemed to feel the class hike. Trainer Steve Knapp drops her back in with her friends today which should trigger another solid effort. I wouldn't mind if AMA RAY would try to stalk the early pace rather than getting caught up in a speed duel. A pace pressing trip from the outside might be the best option for AMA RAY today.
I will place the straight wager on AMA RAY and play just one exacta combo to the very sharp SMOKETTE. Good luck!
