  • One strong Monday Best Bet

YTD: -$87.00 after a fine Sunday. (All plays rated at $10 to win and place)

Saratoga Race 3 Play #2 I Love The Organ
Drops from $50,000 claimers eight days ago, where she ran a credible third, into $35,000 claiming today. She was a best bet for me in her last race and I like her even more in this softer spot. Trainer Chuck Simon has started five horses at the meet so far and has finished third with all five! His horses are obviously running well and he's due to break through with a win. Jerry Bailey, who rode the horse last race, stays aboard. Speed type faded under a hot pace last out but won from a little off the pace three races back at Churchill Downs. I like this play a lot.

Opinion only: I almost made a best bet on #6 Wallstreet Scandal in the second race at Saratoga. It's a two year old maiden race with the typical Saratoga field of horses that look like they all could become stars. Trainer Rick Violette annually wins several of these races and his Wallstreet Scandal seems in a good spot, but Violette is 0-for-8 at the meet and there's a Wayne Lukas trainee that looks strong. I still like the horse to win at a decent price but the two negatives keep me from making it a rated best bet.

          Recap

The thud you're hearing is me kicking my stiupid rear end. Wallstreet Scandal, on whom I made only a small play and didn't recommend as a best bet, won at a shocking 8-1, paying $17.80 to win and $5.70 to place. Grrr. On my program, that would have been a $93.50 profit. On the other hand, I Love That Organ didn't win (again), finishing second for a measly $2.50 to place.

Wagered: $20 (based on $10 to win and place)
          Cashed: $12.50
          Loss: -$7.50

          YTD: -$94.50

At least my handicapping is back on track after a two week cold spell. In answer to the question about where to place bets on horses, almost all offshore books now take horse wagers. Some have limits on bet size and have caps on the size of payoffs for exactas and trifectas but others do not. In addition, many states now allow legal phone betting with American racetrack companies. Among these are youbet.com (very good), PhoneBet (run by Philadelphia Park) and many others. Most allow wagering on the phone or by internet.

Hope some played the opinion and I apologize for not having the guts to make it a recommended best bet.
