DEL MAR -- Race #6 -- CHIKENDINNERWINNER (#2)
__________________________________________________ __________________
The 6th race is a starter allowance sprint for 3 year olds who have never won 2 races lifetime and broke their maidens for Md40000 or less. Par is 101. At this level we always concentrate on lightly raced horses who just earned their maiden victory in their previous start (preferably the ones who broke their maiden with a figure that was par or better than the maiden level). CHIKENDINNERWINNER (3-1) and AFFIRMED FEVER (8-1) both earned their maiden wins against maiden claimers in their most recent start and both did it with par or better figures. CHIKENDINNERWINNER earned a 98-100 for his victory at the 98 level on July 24th. I liked the fact that the win was here at Del Mar and the horse won with what seemed like another gear in reserve. The win was a huge improvement over his previous effort of 98-95+ and trainer Mike Mitchell seems to have this guy going in the right direction. There are 2 Del Mar workouts since the race and jockey Mick Ruis stays aboard. I think he's the horse to beat and is the spot play today.
AFFIRMED FEVER broke his maiden with 99-99 figures at the 99 level on July 15th at Hollywood. However, I didn't see any works since raced and now gets a so-so jockey switch to Kerwin John (Felipe Martinez rode him in the win but opts to ride REIGNING STORM in here). He fits the criteria of a good win against maidens last time out. I would like to think he's headed the right direction off the maiden win but I don't have any evidence of that so I'm tapping CHIKENDINNERWINNER as the spot play instead.
CHIKENDINNERWINNER drew the rail post today. He already has good early speed so I would expect CHIKENDINNERWINNER to be prominent and pushing the pace from the get-go. He showed a nice turn of foot to reel in the pacesetter last time out and should be tough again today. He stretches from 5-1/2 furlongs to 6-1/2 furlongs but I don't see that as a problem. I'm going with a win bet on him and keying him on top of some nice priced horses who ran well in their last starts. RED LEGEND (4-1), REIGNING STORM (15-1) and AFFIRMED FEVER (8-1) could make a nice exacta quinella with CHIKENDINNERWINNER. Good luck.
