DEL MAR -- Race #4 -- UNION TRAIN (#7)

The 4th race is a maiden claiming $80,000 sprint for 2 year olds at 5-1/2 furlongs. Par is 98. UNION TRAIN comes out of a monster race from July 15th at Hollywood where he ran 2nd with figures of 97-99 but could only get within 5 lengths of the powerful runaway winner. The turn time (1/4 mile to top of the stretch 1/2 mile) was phenomenal in that race and UNION TRAIN was able to gain 2 positions and holding his position. Trainer John Dolan drops the colt from open straight maidens into maiden claiming today but an $80,000 price tag isn't exactly a giveaway so the drop should only help his chances.
Any other colt in the race that has flashed a pace figure in the high 90's (FLYING ELVIS, BEAU and FREE AMERICAN) followed the pace figure up with disappointing final figures while UNION TRAIN actually increased his final figure to 99 after the 97 pace. That should make UNION TRAIN hard to beat. FLYING ELVIS has a right to improve in his 2nd lifetime start and first on dirt but doesn't look like he has trained as well after moving to Southern California as he did up North. He is from one of the top NorCal trainers and Art Sherman has had some success with his first 7 starters at the Del Mar meet. Most of his horses have shown speed and I wouldn't be surprised to see FLYING ELVIS show a lot better speed today. I will use him in my exotics.
UNION TRAIN is the spot play win bet and key to exotics today. I am tempted to use him on top of FLYING ELVIS, BEAU and OLY's OAK as the main backups. Good luck.
