    DEL MAR -- Race #8 -- BLACKDOUN (#3)
    __________________________________________________ __________________

Today's 8th race will be heat 2 of this year's Oceanside Stakes. This race is for three year old non-winners of a sweepstakes of $50,000 in 2004. We have assigned a par level of 108 for Del Mar's Opening Day turf stakes race.

As we look over the speed figures report, it becomes clear that the locals just don't seem to cut it. QUIET CASH has earned the best final figure of 108 in the Pasadena run on March 17th. QUIET CASH came back to post an ugly 106-105-97+ against N1x company. I can't forgive an effort like that no matter how much trouble he may have had.

TERROPLANE (5-2) and LUCKY PULPIT (5-1) have the next best set of figures from California. Neither runner comes into this race off a very solid effort, so I will have to keep looking.

Spot play honors will have to go to the import BLACKDOUN (7-2). We don't have any figures for this colt but we do have great human connections with some very impressive stats. For starters, Julio Canani continues to hit at a very high percentage here at Del Mar. Last year, Canani and top rider Nakatani combined with 35% winners from 23 starters. That combo was even better than Canani and P Val. BLACKDOUN doesn't have to be a super horse to beat this sub par group. BLACKDOUN brings an impressive record (at today's mile distance) to a race which lacks quality milers. As second choice on the morning line, BLACKDOUN looks like a very solid play.

I will place a WIN/PLACE wager on BLACKDOUN since I really can't stand behind any of our locals. Good luck and welcome to Del Mar!
