HOLLYWOOD PARK -- Race #3 -- BROKE THE SLUMP (#7)
__________________________________________________ __________________
The 3rd race today is a $25,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at 7-1/2 furlongs on dirt. Par for the level is 101. BROKE THE SLUMP has several things going for her today and is a clear spot play here. First, she is coming off a nice effort at this exact distance when she earned a 96-101-101+ at the $32,000 level. That figure is much the best of the recent figures in this field. BROKE THE SLUMP also looks like the only filly with an inclination to lead and if you let a filly with the best figure also control the speed then you have a winning recipe. Last, she's out of the strong barn of Doug O'Neill and is ridden back again by John Court who is picking up good horses and racking up wins lately.
BROKE THE SLUMP was in a slump for a long time and after clearing a Cal-bred N1X allowance race back in 2002 she looked like she was on her way to bigger and better things. However, after a lifetime best of 98-103-106 in a stakes race something must have gone wrong with her and she missed all of 2003. She was brought back early this year at Santa Anita and didn't have any spark so was sent to the bench again. When she came back at a mile on turf in April she showed speed until the 2nd call (6 furlongs) and ran a much improved figure of 94-97-94+. Add in the fact that the improved race was on turf where she's had no wins in 6 lifetime starts and you could easily have predicted an even better effort from her when she switched back to dirt last time and moved to Hollywood where she has always run well. That was the move that keyed the big effort from her last time and makes her the spot play today. She chased a runaway winner but was moving well at the end and handily beat a few of the others in this field.
AMA RAY, TIDY STEP and LORI M'LOVE are all capable of showing some speed but none of them consistently push a normal pace figure of BROKE THE SLUMP so I'm not sure it would be a good idea for any of them to lead this. I do like the winning figures for that strong $32,000 race at this distance on June 3rd that several of the entrants are coming out of (including BROKE THE SLUMP, LORI M'LOVE, SORRYTOTELLYOU and LA PERFECTA). That race may be key to providing the exacta here and of the others it looks like LORI M'LOVE is my main exacta horse. She gets a rider switch from Martin Pedroza to Victor Espinoza and ran pretty well for 2/3rds of the race while making a move to get even with BROKE THE SLUMP before that one put her away and cleared off for a 2nd place finish. I'm looking for a bump of improvement from LORI M'LOVE to finish on the board today.
BROKE THE SLUMP should be tough to beat in here. She is the spot play win bet and key to LORI M'LOVE and LA PERFECTA in the exotics. Good luck.
****MMM**** real busy time of year for me...a/c contractor down here in florida...tough to get time to post but the real action starts soon....good luck...mike
