Race 9 Port of Trieste (#1)
The 9th race is a Md25000 race at 1-1/16 for fillies and mares. Par is a lowly 92. Horses dropping to this level for the first time always hit very hard at this level and PORT OF TRIESTE / BRITE LASSIE fit that profile. PORT OF TRIESTE is falling out of the open straight maiden ranks but posted figures in her last race of 91-93-92 and is the only one in this race to ever show a pace and final combination above 90. Her first lifetime start was a 7 furlong effort where she drew the rail position and then broke slow. Throw that race out - it's not a good indication of her true ability. She was then sent long on the grass and earned the solid set of figures even though she was never competitive and had no closing bid. Now that she's moving back to dirt and dropping to the bottom level today I would expect her to show a lot more speed and to be tough to beat.
BRITE LASSIE and SUMMER LEA come out of the same sprint last time out and both are dropping from the Cal-bred Md40000 to this level for the first time. It's really only a 1 level drop since they were facing restricted state-bred maidens in their last few starts but the drop will still work to their advantage. SUMMER LEA is hung on the far outside and actually may have the best early speed, but I would expect BRITE LASSIE to push her and eventually get rid of her. BRITE LASSIE is a Mike Mitchell trained filly who will be stretching out to this distance for the first time but is making only her 2nd start as a 3 year old and the 7 furlong sprint effort last time out was better than it looked on paper. Her 92-86 figures should improve with that prep race under her belt. She has shown more competitive efforts than PORT OF TRIESTE, but PORT was facing much better fillies so that has to be taken into account.
PORT OF TRIESTE is the spot play win bet today and key in exotics. She should use her rail position today to establish a forward position early behind SUMMER LEA and BRITE LASSIE and launch a move from there. BRITE LASSIE and MAGNIFICENT SUNSET look like the best of the remaining field. Good luck.
