BEST BET: Bailey’s Yodeler (3rd race)

    First Race:1.Apollo Treasure 2.Modern Design 3.Dancing Fairy

APOLLO TREASURE looks like the one to beat in this rather dreary opener for bottom-level maidens. She’s 0for-1, but she does have six seconds and three thirds on her resume. Five of those seconds have come in her past five starts, and she’s improved her Beyer in each of the past three starts. Her biggest drawback, besides her expected low value, is her style that includes no speed at all.MODERN DESIGN makes her third start of the year. She sat just off the pace before fading in the lane and finishing behind the top pick when favored in her route debut last time. She has a decent work since and will be much tighter today.DANCING FAIRY tries two turns for the first time here. She had an excuse last time when bumped at the break.Though never a factor in the race, she did finish nicely to be third.

    Second Race:1.Go Niner 2.Catzzene 3.Fancy Begining

GO NINER is fairly consistent at these lower levels. She beat better two races back and ran all right in a contentious heat last time. The winner of that race stepped up and suffered a tough beat, while she drops a notch today. She has a pair of maintenance drills for young trainer Selwyn LaGrone, who gets the most out of his limited running opportunities.CATZZENE seems to have a perference for turf, but she has run all right on dirt in the past.Toss the last one when she was thrown to the proverbial wolves.FANCY BEGINING had excuses last time when she finished behind the top pick. She stumbled at the break and was eliminated from the get-go. Expect improvement in her third start off a layoff.

    Third Race:1.Bailey’s Yodeler 2.Bold Beat 3.Ole Don

BAILEY’S YODELER has done nothing wrong in two career starts. He won his debut and was claimed in his second start when he was outfinished late after taking the lead in the lane. He appears to have a pace advantage here, but there is a red flag as trainer Art Sherman, who wins 28 percent and shows a $2.82 flat-bet profit first off a claim, runs him back for half of the claiming price with only one three-furlong work in nearly five weeks. You’re playing race-track poker with Sherman, but this looks like the one they’ll have to catch.BOLD BEAT has a pattern similar to the top pick.He broke his maiden, ran well in his debut against winners and has his claiming price cut in half here.Perhaps both are trying to qualify for starter allowance races.OLE DON returns to a sprint today. He graduated at this distance and has decent fractions while routing in two starts since. He is a must-use in exotics.

    Fourth Race:1.Scher Bold 2.Inquisitive Flirt 3.Bongo Kitty

SCHER BOLD gets the nod in the fourth straight intriguing race from a handicapping perspective. She has won two straight, going wire-to-wire at this level last time. She got away with soft splits that day but showed in her previous start that she can stalk and win. She’s 2-for-2 in her career here as well.INQUISITIVE FLIRT has the best last-race Beyer by a substantial margin when she suffered a tough beat at even money on the drop. She moves up a notch here, but note that she trailed the top pick two back.BONGO KITTY comes off a brief freshener and has a steady series of drills, including a bullet in her final blowout. She fits nicely at this level and can’t be overlooked.

Fifth Race:1.Bolted Heart 2.Bay Street Boy 3.Notorious One

BOLTED HEART makes his turf debut today, stepping up a notch off a victory in which he overcame early trouble when forced to steady into the first turn. The distance is perfect for him, and his breeding indicates he should be able to handle the turf. Only two of his rivals have ever been on grass, and BAY STREET BOY has the only turf victory in the field. He broke his maiden at Turf Paradise on the grass and did all right in his debut against winners despite seeming to duck away from the whip in the lane. His turf breeding is modest at best, but he’s the only one here with any success on the surface. NOTORIOUS ONE has won two straight since stretching out. He climbs the claiming ladder here and makes his turf debut. He has speed and will be a pace factor throughout. Ill Naab the Win looked good winning his debut, but now he’ll meet winners for the first time, will try two turns for the first time and switches surfaces.

    Sixth Race:1.Priest River 2.Highly Justified 3.Doc N Jag

PRIEST RIVER was re-claimed by the high-percentage Steve Miyadi barn last time out. It was the second time Miyadi has claimed him. He’s a solid runner who has hit the board his past six starts. There’s a jockey switch today, and he gets in light against older rivals, but young Hector Romero has been riding well, so the move could be significant.HIGHLY JUSTIFIED looked good winning a bottom-level maiden claimer. The barn took a shot in his first start against winners, but this appears to be a more realistic level. He should be closer early and can be a factor in the lane. DOC N JAG is 1-for-26 and is winless here as well as winless the past two years. There have been signs of improvement, however, and he could offer some value in exotics as he moves up today.

    Seventh Race:1.Con Quixote 2.Spy Me Not 3.Operatic

Former stakes winner CON QUIXOTE is a game performer as he showed last time even though he lost a photo to SPY ME NOT when the odds-on pick.He has speed and was pressured on the lead last time.Today, with the presence of Twentythreejaybird, he’ll bet a more comfortable stalking trip and draws outside Spy Me Not, who breaks from the rail here. There may not be appropriate value in a tough spot, but he’s a game competitor who always runs his race and likes this track.Spy Me Not changed tactics a bit last time to put more pressure on the top pick, and it paid off.The position switch is not a positive for him. OPERATIC turned in a good try in his comeback against the top pair last time and should be improved here.He gets a good draw and will stalk nicely. He has enough talent to win. Attack Force is another who is always right there and cannot be dismissed.

    Eighth Race:1.Feel the Gold 2.Czarist 3.Seedoubleyoubee

FEEL THE GOLD has run all right and has shown improvement in recent starts. He may offer a bit of value in a wide-open race that closes what should be a day of interesting handicapping challenges. CZARIST had no excuses when second as an odds-on choice last time. He stalked nicely but made no impact in the lane. Check Highly Justified’s efforts in today’s sixth race to get a handle on how good that last race may have been. SEEDOUBLEYOUBEE faded badly against better last time in his first start off a claim. He’d been gone seven weeks and need that race and has worked well since.Trainer Genaro Vallejo is off to a good start with three wins from his first eight starters with three more hitting the board.
