Eleven entered in Preakness

BALTIMORE - Eleven horses were entered Wednesday morning for Saturday's 129th Preakness Staktes at Pimlico. The only mild surprise was Song of the Sword, who finished 11th in the Kentucky Derby.
Smarty Jones, the Derby winner, heads the field. Others in the race are Borrego, Eddington, Imperialism, Lion Heart, Little Matth Man, Rock Hard Ten, Sir Shackleton, The Cliff's Edge, and Water Cannon.

Posts for the Preakness will be selected Wednesday evening during a one-hour telecast on ESPN, beginning at 5 pm.

Smarty Jones was scheduled to arrive by van Wednesday afternoon after training this morning at his base at Philadelphia Park.

Eddington was traveling by van from Belmont Park. Borrego, Lion Heart, and Rock Hard Ten were flying here from Kentucky.

Selection Process :

Info is from the Thoroughbred Times Racing Almanac ...

The Preakness limits to 14 horses. If oversubscribed, they pick the first 7 by lifetime graded stakes earnings. The next 4 come from lifetime earnings in unrestricted stakes. The final 3 come from lifetime earnings in all races. There is also a provision that any horse getting a check in the Derby is automatically in.

The Belmont limits to 16. If oversubscribed, the first 8 are selected by earnings in graded stakes of 1 mile or over. The next 5 are based on earnings in all unrestricted stakes. The final 3 are based on earnings in all races. Any horse getting a check in the Derby or the Preakness is automatically included in the first group of 8.
