DOROTHY'S DIAMOND - This gelding seems to run pretty good after a vacation. Last time around the track was at Mahoning Valley Race Cour in a race with a class figure of 93. Dropping significantly in class rating this time around puts him in a solid position in this field. I like the piece of information that this gelding's last speed rating, 74, is tops in this field. SPIRIT AMOUR - This gelding is in superb form right now. Ran third last time out and comes back quickly.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 SEVENTYSEVEN (ML=2/1), #6 MY BOY CHISUM (ML=9/2), #1 GAMBARU (ML=6/1),

SEVENTYSEVEN - Tough for anyone who saw this vulnerable equine in his last affair to wager on him today. This gelding recorded a speed figure in his last event which likely isn't good enough in today's event. MY BOY CHISUM - Didn't close at all on Apr 23rd. Hard to wager on in today's event at the expected odds. This runner ran a somewhat easily forgotten speed rating last time around the track. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will likely suffer defeat in today's event running that rating. GAMBARU - Not probable that the speed rating he registered on April 17th will hold up in this event.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - DOROTHY'S DIAMOND - This gelding is in the top spot in the bunch in earnings per start. I'm betting on this one.

MESSY MOON - This filly faced open company last time out. Moving into a restricted state bred today. Is well worth a look. Sub-par effort last out at Laurel was due to the off-going (she ran eleventh). Should do better today under normal track conditions. I believe this thoroughbred will be right there at the wire. Gets Lasix for the 2nd time, so Rawles must have confidence in her. MARSHMELLOWMADDNES - You always have to be on the watch for money making jockey/conditioner duos; we have it right here. First-timer has been working over this very track. I think that's a big plus in her favor. I know the barn is serious today. The filly gets Lasix for the first time.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 BROKEN BORDER (ML=8/5), #13 SPA DUCHESS (ML=7/2), #10 ALYSSA AND A LISA (ML=4/1),

BROKEN BORDER - The morning-line choice is suspect here with the lack of drills. SPA DUCHESS - Should have at least hit the board in the last sixty days in a sprint race to be worth the risk at small odds in a sprint. ALYSSA AND A LISA - The absence of early speed in the last one, a route race, is a bit alarming.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - MESSY MOON - Class figure today of 63. Taking a significant drop in the level of competition and should respond well to easier company. Worth a bet.

I'M HIGHLY RATED - Trainer, Cravens, has been deliberate with this gelding off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. Personally, I wouldn't worry about where he finished in his last race (sixth). Should improve today, with some decent odds. HEZA CITY SLICKER - Taking a class drop in Equibase class figure points from his Apr 22nd race at Lone Star Park. Based on that data, I will give this animal the advantage.

SONORAN PEGASUS - This chalk horse ran on Apr 22nd and hasn't had a blow out after that. SALTY HIGH - Hasn't hit the board in any short distance contests of late. Not likely to see him doing it today either. SPIRIT FLIGHT - You always believe this equine has a shot to be the victor, but he fails most of the time. Hasn't been close to winning at all of late.

WINKATDAWAT - Mason has this gelding in the right spot. Smart move here since this horse won a Starter Allowance race not too long ago. This one has shown the capability to win at multiple race tracks. Making the move from Keeneland for today's event, I have to believe he's ready to run. FOR GOODNESS SAKE - I undeniably see good luck for this steed right here. RUBLE - Finished out of the money last out at Fair Grounds, but was within 5 lengths of the winner. Opening at 9/2 makes me think he's got a chance. You probably should discount that last clash at Fair Grounds on the soft turf where he finished off the board. Should do well in this event on a non-sloppy track. A repeat of that recent performance on March 13th where he garnered a rating of 103 looks good enough to win in this clash.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 COUGAR RIDGE (ML=3/1), #1 POSEIDON'S WAY (ML=4/1), #1A WATCH MY SMOKE (ML=4/1),

COUGAR RIDGE - A bit of a less than stellar performance when this gelding finished fifth. POSEIDON'S WAY - This horse just hasn't looked ready recently. When examining today's class rating, he will have to garner a better speed figure than last race out to battle in this dirt route. WATCH MY SMOKE - Tough to support any thoroughbred that runs as well as he did and then lays up and doesn't workout at all.

MY GAL PAL - Difficult to put your dough on the win end of any racer that finishes second and third as frequently as this thoroughbred does. OPEN INTEREST - Usually I need a sprinter to have some success lately in short distance races in order to support her. Finished sixth in her most recent effort with a common speed rating. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this field. EMY NEY - Tough to play any racer to turn things around if there is no value to taking the chance.

TERRY BLOSSOM - Was in a $16,000 Claiming race at Penn National in the last race. That affair had a class figure of 78 and she is moving down in this race. A certain contender. This mare earned a nice speed rating of 72 in her last clash. That speed rating should be good enough to score this time out. Look at this pattern of improvement. 58/68/72 are the last three speed ratings.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 OUTWITHBIGDADDY (ML=6/5), #6 FIRST DANCE (ML=3/1), #4 GOLD VALUE (ML=6/1),

OUTWITHBIGDADDY - You should normally gamble against morning-line favorites that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last three weeks. Has been thwarted as the chalk the last two times. A repeat is probably in store. FIRST DANCE - The lack of morning drills has to make one concerned despite the nice performance in the last contest. This questionable contender ran a common speed fig last time around the track. She shouldn't improve and will probably lose in today's race running that rating. GOLD VALUE - No wager value on this participant at the likely odds of 6/1.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - TERRY BLOSSOM - One can surmise, given she finished off the board at Penn National last out, that this horse did not like the off track. I expect a chance at a big improvement with better footing today.

HIDEAWAY - This filly likes to be near the lead. Today's affair is a shorter distance and should help her likelihood of winning. Cartagena drops her down to this level. You don't need too much more handicapping knowledge to think this thoroughbred has a good chance at this level.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SIX DEGREE (ML=5/2), #4 BETAMERICA BABE (ML=7/2), #5 SENORITA TERESITA (ML=9/2),

SIX DEGREE - Didn't hit the board on May 3rd after the long breather. Be doubtful of this one in today's event. This filly hasn't been showing me anything in the last couple of races. BETAMERICA BABE - This horse doesn't have a champion's attitude. Repeatedly finishes close, but no cigar. Once you've got at least ten races at the oval and still have no triumphs, its tough to break through for a victory. SENORITA TERESITA - Won't be easy for this thoroughbred to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure close to today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the questionable challengers list.

#1 LASS CHANNEL (ML=5/2)


LASS CHANNEL - This trainer brings horses to the grass conditioned properly and ready to go, winning over 20 percent of the time under similar conditions. I expect a lot from this thoroughbred. His Equibase speed figs under similar conditions are tops in this bunch. Last time around the track was at Louisiana Downs in a race with an Equibase class figure of 71. Dropping significantly in class figure this time out puts him in a solid position right here. This gelding has a lot of ability on the turf. Could be long gone by the time they turn for home and hit the stretch. A definite class advantage goes to this horse. Pretty good indication he will be very competitive in this turf race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #10 ESPLANADE AMBITION (ML=3/1), #2 MENEWA (ML=7/2), #9 PRIMARILY GOLD (ML=8/1),

ESPLANADE AMBITION - Doesn't seem inspiring to me after the lack of any sort of closing response on December 5th. Don't think this mount will do much running in today's event. That last speed rating was disappointing when compared with today's Equibase class figure. MENEWA - If he goes off anywhere close to the morning line of 7/2, I'll have to pass. PRIMARILY GOLD - This gelding hasn't had any recent accomplishments in sprint affairs. I find it hard to wager on him in this contest.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - LASS CHANNEL - Having the best speed fig last race of 62 at Louisiana Downs on May 11th. This gelding has an excellent chance to win here.

AFLEET MARTINI - This gelding ran well in his last race but just couldn't catch the winner. Note that he was well ahead of the 3rd horse, and looks like a major contender in this field. The most recent speed fig of 84 is the highest last race speed rating in the field. HELIODORO - When this jockey and trainer join forces you have to take a look. Velazquez and Zito have been wonderful together.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 LUBSEN (ML=5/2), #9 HIGH I. Q. PETE (ML=7/2), #2 CZARMO (ML=6/1),

LUBSEN - Can't play this morning-line choice off the extended vacation. Showed very little in the last race. Really don't see any chance of any change today. When scrutinizing today's Equibase class figure, he will have to earn a much better speed figure than last out to be competitive in this dirt sprint. HIGH I. Q. PETE - I'd like to see more preferred recent efforts with M/L odds of 7/2. One should normally not wager on a mount in the next start after finishing off the board following a very long layoff. Doubtful that the fig he garnered on May 7th will be good enough in this event. CZARMO - Didn't perform too well last time out. Probably won't do much running today. Could be tough for this thoroughbred to beat this group off of that last fig. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the likely underlays list.

SECONDHAND ANGEL - Ran last out against much better company at Pimlico. The move to a lower class level should suit her well. I look for a chance at a big improvement today with the addition of Lasix for the second time. Forgive the off the board finish on the off track in the last race. Without the slop, has a good shot in this field. CHATTOLANEE - You'll be making money left and right by turning your bankroll onto this rider/conditioner combination. Jock hops back atop after getting to know the race horse by riding last time around the track. That's always a good thing. This horse didn't run well on a track listed as good in her last race around the track at Laurel. You should disregard that showing. Here is an appropriate handicapping angle that I've used many times before. Play a filly (like this one) getting Lasix for the 2nd time.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 BRITT'S FORTUNE (ML=8/5), #6 JACKSIE (ML=9/2), #3 DERWIN'S DECISION (ML=5/1),

BRITT'S FORTUNE - Don't believe this racer will do much running in today's event. That last fig was disappointing when compared with today's class figure. JACKSIE - Today's event is 6 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a short distance race in the last couple months. Not the greatest of indicators. Tough to bet on at 9/2 odds after the last two showings. DERWIN'S DECISION - Tough to wager on any thoroughbred in a short distance race at 5/1 when she hasn't shown any successful endeavors in sprints in the last couple of months. Didn't hit the board on April 8th at Laurel. Followed it up with another less than stellar outing.

SECONDHAND ANGEL - Ran last out against much better company at Pimlico. The move to a lower class level should suit her well. I look for a chance at a big improvement today with the addition of Lasix for the second time. Forgive the off the board finish on the off track in the last race. Without the slop, has a good shot in this field. CHATTOLANEE - You'll be making money left and right by turning your bankroll onto this rider/conditioner combination. Jock hops back atop after getting to know the race horse by riding last time around the track. That's always a good thing. This horse didn't run well on a track listed as good in her last race around the track at Laurel. You should disregard that showing. Here is an appropriate handicapping angle that I've used many times before. Play a filly (like this one) getting Lasix for the 2nd time.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 BRITT'S FORTUNE (ML=8/5), #6 JACKSIE (ML=9/2), #3 DERWIN'S DECISION (ML=5/1),

BRITT'S FORTUNE - Don't believe this racer will do much running in today's event. That last fig was disappointing when compared with today's class figure. JACKSIE - Today's event is 6 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a short distance race in the last couple months. Not the greatest of indicators. Tough to bet on at 9/2 odds after the last two showings. DERWIN'S DECISION - Tough to wager on any thoroughbred in a short distance race at 5/1 when she hasn't shown any successful endeavors in sprints in the last couple of months. Didn't hit the board on April 8th at Laurel. Followed it up with another less than stellar outing.

ATHENA GRANDE - Got an unlucky trip her first time out. Hitting the track today, should do better if she stays out of any issues. Hernandez was aboard this filly last time out and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. BIRD SENSE - Looking at this filly's running lines, I see she's almost always on the board. This front-runner should be aided by this contest's shorter trip. This filly's last speed rating is good enough to score here, I'll wager on her back again in today's event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 MISSSEVENTHIRTEEN (ML=2/1), #6 NORTHERN MICHIGAN (ML=5/1), #5 STARLIGHT EXPRESS (ML=6/1),

MISSSEVENTHIRTEEN - I don't normally play a chalk horse that hasn't been to the track in the last three weeks. NORTHERN MICHIGAN - This filly hasn't had any positive efforts in short distance affairs in the last couple of months. Could be tough for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed figure. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put her on the likely underlays list. STARLIGHT EXPRESS - This horse didn't go to the front end and didn't make up ground in the lane last time she ran. This filly recorded a speed figure in her last event which likely isn't good enough today.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - ATHENA GRANDE - Trainer puts this filly on Lasix for the second time in succession. Pretty good indication Tomlinson is putting her in to win in this race.
