Mahoning Valley and Laurel Park February 01, 2016

Mahoning Valley Race Course Race 7 for Monday, February 01, 2016

Post: 3:32pm - Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,600 Class Rating: 76

      Rating: 3.5 Golden Dollars

      #8 BAYOU ST JOHN (ML=3/1)
      #6 DAVID'S BREW (ML=15/1)

BAYOU ST JOHN - Dropping down in class figure points from his January 19th race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. Based on that data point, I will give this horse the edge. DAVID'S BREW - This gelding should give a strong account of himself in today's race.

      Vulnerable Contenders: #3 FALSE POSITIVE (ML=7/2), #5 PONTUAL (ML=9/2), #2 RECONDO (ML=5/1),

FALSE POSITIVE - This colt almost certainly won't be right there at the wire. PONTUAL - Last ran on Jan 24th at Turfway Park, finishing fifth. Not likely to advance off of that try today. RECONDO - Could be tough for this thoroughbred to beat this group off of that last speed figure. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the likely underlays list.

      STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #8 BAYOU ST JOHN to win if you can get at least 7/5 odds

      EXACTA WAGERS:
      Box [6,8]

      TRIFECTA WAGERS:
      None

      SUPERFECTA WAGERS:
      Skip

      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Track: Laurel Park Race: 2/1/2016 - Race 7

Monday's 7th race (3:18pm ET) from Laurel Park is an Optional Claiming event for fillies and mares traveling one mile on the main track.

#2 Lady Sebago (5-1) had a very productive juvenile campaign in 2014 but lost her way and went winless in five starts last year. The fresh filly drops out of the stakes ranks and reunites with the only rider to win with her (Trevor McCarthy, 6 for his last 14). She would not mind a wet track and this looks like a good spot to get her career back on track.

      #2 Lady Sebago

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #1 - Post: 12:45pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $7,000 Class Rating: 66

            Rating: Four Golden Dollars

O'BANNON BOY - Getting a weight break of 5 pounds from last race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour on January 19th. Certainly could make the difference in this race. WOSSAMOTTA U - Has found a soft spot today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 WEST TERRACE (ML=9/5), #4 RISING CREEK (ML=3/1), #9 IMAGE OFA PRINCE (ML=4/1),

WEST TERRACE - This morning-line choice may be out of shape without any recent morning drills. RISING CREEK - Earned a quite unimpressive speed rating last time out in a $5,000 Maiden Claiming race on Jan 19th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that number. IMAGE OFA PRINCE - Doubtful that the speed fig he recorded on January 19th will be good enough in this event.

            STRAIGHT WAGERS:
#3 O'BANNON BOY is going to be the play if we are getting 3/2 or better

Turf Paradise Race 2 3:08 pm ET from Turf Paradise is a Maiden Optional Claiming event for 4-year-olds and up traveling seven and one-half furlongs on the turf course (rail at 28 feet).

            Rating Three Golden Dollars

#1 Scat City (6-1) stalked and weakened (9th by 25) in his $20k Del Mar dirt sprint bow and showed marked improvement (3rd by 4) in an $8k synthetic sprint at Golden Gate second time out. The runner-up from his last returned to score and Scat Daddy is a 15% first turf sire.

Gulfstream Park Race 3 for Wednesday, February 03, 2016

              Gulfstream Park - Race #3 - Post: 1:35pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 86

              Rating: Four Golden Dollars

              #4 CURLIN'S GEM (ML=7/2)

CURLIN'S GEM - Sub-par try in the last race at Gulfstream Park was due to the off-going (he finished sixth). Will do better in this event with the benefit of a fast track. The addition of blinkers should keep his mind on business today. SPRING ACTION - This horse could be tough in today's contest, especially since Gaffalione rode last race out and now should be acquainted with this one. This jock and handler's horses have been producing a favorable return on investment. Sub-par effort in the last race at Gulfstream Park was due to the off-going (he finished ninth). Have to give a better effort today on a fast track. The addition of the 'hood' should keep his mind on business today.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #5 MONGOLIAN CHROME (ML=3/1), #2 STEVARINO (ML=4/1), #3 MATCH UP (ML=5/1),

MONGOLIAN CHROME - This morning-line favorite ran on January 6th and hasn't had a work since then. Have to put a question mark next to the most recent fig since it was attained on a track listed as good. STEVARINO - Hasn't been close to winning at all of late. MATCH UP - Difficult to put your cash on the win end of any entrant that finishes second and third as often as this one does. This gelding hasn't been showing me anything in the last couple of outings. Should be difficult for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class figure, so put him on the possibly overvalued equines list.

              STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Have to go with #4 CURLIN'S GEM on the win end if we get at least 7/5 odds

Gulfstream Park Race 1 for Thursday, February 04, 2016

                    Gulfstream Park - Race #1 - Post: 12:35pm - Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 88

                    Rating: Four Golden Dollars

                    #1 ARELLA PRINCESS (ML=4/1)

ARELLA PRINCESS - A horse coming back this promptly after a solid effort is a good sign. Filly took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. SOLFATARA - Jock hops up aloft after getting to know the horse by riding last race out. That's always a big time angle. I think Bates is making a good move here. This filly can only benefit from the shorter distance.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 BEARS REFLECTION (ML=2/1), #6 STARSHIP LISA (ML=3/1), #5 MOCHIMA (ML=6/1),

BEARS REFLECTION - 2/1 is not pegged at the proper price for any horse in a sprint of 7 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a short distance race lately. All types of crazy early speed entered for this event. Little chance for this speedy one. STARSHIP LISA - This filly hasn't had any recent accomplishments in sprint races. No picnic to bet on her in this race. Don't feel this entrant will make an impact in today's event. That last speed rating was disappointing when compared with today's Equibase class figure. MOCHIMA - This filly finished out of the money on October 7th and wasn't even close last race out either. Tough to like the downward spiraling flow (87/81/46) of speed ratings.

                    STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Play #1 ARELLA PRINCESS to win if you can get odds of 7/5 or more

                        Turfway Park - Race #3 - Post: 7:13pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $5,100 Class Rating: 60

                        #1 HUGHHOOFNER (ML=4/1)
                        #4 HUNDREDS (ML=8/1)

HUGHHOOFNER - This thoroughbred coming off a good performance in the last 30 days is a contender in my humble opinion. With a big class drop in Equibase class figure points from his March 4th race at Turfway Park. Based on that key piece of info, I will give this one the edge. That 65 fig this gelding recorded in his last event tells me he's a main player this time out. Connelly enters this animal in a spot where he should fit well based on his last two speed figures. HUNDREDS - Trainer Kobiskie moves this one down the class ladder to face a less competitive field. Look for a solid race with this class drop. Have to give this colt a chance. Ran a good race in the last race within the last month.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #11 RUMLAD (ML=7/2), #5 ROBERTS ROGUE (ML=5/1), #8 NOTMUCHTOLOOKAT (ML=5/1),

RUMLAD - Doesn't look to be worth 7/2 in today's event. Pass on him this time. ROBERTS ROGUE - The finish of fourth in the last event shows me that this horse may be going out of form. NOTMUCHTOLOOKAT - This animal hasn't shown much effort in the last couple races.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - HUGHHOOFNER - Put a prime wager on this gelding. At the top in earnings per start and has a lot more to offer as well.

                        STRAIGHT WAGERS:
#1 HUGHHOOFNER is the play if we get odds of 9/5 or better
