Chung, I think Calvin Borrel blew that race. Made his move way too early on Mine That Bird, just like Mike Smith made his move in the Preakness too late. I know this is a stretch but had Smith and Borrel given Mine That Bird a different ride in the Preakness and Belmont we may have had a Triple Crown Winner.

the trainer said that also,but sometimes a horse just gets into the bit and you use more energy holding them,than letting them go // borel is very patient,i would tend to think the horse was just a little gung ho,maybe the toil of those 3 tough races in 5 weeks took some life out of the dude also,he was leading in the stretch,and thats the only race where we saw him get passed in the stretch // on another note,i really thought dunkirks race was huge,busting those hot fractions then holding 2nd,dunkirk might have been part of the problem also,might have been scared he was getting too far away-that was really a big race the kirkmeister ran !!

also the track was playing very kindly to front speed,as always in horse racing,lots of variables involved !!

just my humble opinion but i do not think a perfect trip would have beat summer bird,the horse was fresh,ready to fire,and got a dream set-up when dunkirk softened the rest of the field up with those fractions,but i think he probably could have got second with a little better timing. ps-thats a two hundred thousand dollar jump.
