I'm avoiding Saratoga because of uncertainty over condition of both the grass and main track after Friday's debacle. Still, there's a lot to like today including a great card at Arlington.
Arlington Park Race 6 Play #4 Cherokee Queen
Bet $25 to win and place
This horse drops from the Grade 3 Virginia Oaks to a softer listed stakes. The cutback in distance helps. John Velazquez rides.
Arlington Park Race 8 Gr. 1 Secretariat Stakes Play #2 Winchester
Bet $25 to win and place
This horse was outclassed in the Irish Derby but drops in class and cuts back in distance. Breeding, out of Theatrical, is perfect for 1 1/4 miles on American grass. We could get 6-1 because of the presence of an Aidan O'Brien horse (he's the world's hottest trainer) and overrated Tizdejavu who has benefited from soft paces in shorter races.
Arlington Park Race 10 Gr.1 Arlington Million Play #1 Archipenko
Bet $50 to win and place
There is no trainer in the world better at pointing for a race than Michael de Kock (he cleans up every year on Dubai World Cup day) and this horse has been aimed for this race all year. He won a Grade 1 in Hong Kong this spring and won a shorter race at Ascot last month in a prep for this. (This is my strongest play of the day.)
Arlington Park Race 11 Play #11 Sher Win Forest
Bet $25 to win and place
This is just an Illinois-bred allowance but my horse figures at a fat price. He's second off the claim and ran very well at this level last out despite trouble at the break.
Del Mar Race 9 Gr. 2 La Jolla Handicap Play #1 Tangled Tango
Bet $25 to win and place
This horse was flying late despite being way wide in the Oceanside three weeks ago. He gets a much better post and more pace to run at.
Presque Isle Downs Race 3 Play #7 Causin' Havoc
Bet $25 to win and place
This horse took a lot of money in his career debut at Keeneland and resurfaces against a much softer field four months later. I don't hold his lousy debut against him as he blew the break (common for a first starter). the morning line is 8-1; there's no way we get that but 7-2 is possible.
