Del Mar carryover hits nearly $1 million
By JAY PRIVMAN
DEL MAR, Calif. -- There has been no rain this summer at Del Mar, but on Wednesday, it's the perfect storm. No one hit the pick six on Monday, the second straight day it was missed, which yielded a gigantic carryover of nearly $1 million – $993,898 – for Wednesday's closing-day card.
Because Wednesday is closing day, there will be a mandatory payout, which should make the pick six even more attractive. And since it follows a dark day on Tuesday, and since there is no racing in New York on Wednesday to siphon off dollars, bettors figure to be vying for an enormous pool that will attract players from across the country.
There is a 10-race card at Del Mar on Wednesday, with first post time at 2 p.m. Pacific time. The pick six is on the final six races, races 5-10. Post time for the fifth race will be a little after 4 p.m.
It is an extremely challenging pick six, much as was Monday's. There are 10 horses in the fifth race, 10 betting interests in the sixth, 14 in the seventh, 12 in the eighth, 13 in the featured ninth race -- the Del Mar Futurity -- and another 10 in the finale.
