Play all at equal amounts to win and place

Churchill Downs Race 6 Play #3 Steds Pirate
This horse ships in from Arlington where he faded to sixth in a longer race. Nonetheless, his speed figure was faster than any other horse in here ran in its last race. He drops from 1 1/16 to seven furlongs and goes from a 1x allowance to a conditioned claiming race. That's a pretty big drop and the cutback in distance helps too. This is the likely favorite but the price should be okay because of the large 12-horse field, most of which consists of bums.

Churchill Downs Race 9 Gr. III Bashford Manor Play #6 Ascot Hall
This is the major stakes of the Churchill Downs meet for two year old colts and it comes up rather soft. I'm looking for an upset with a horse that ships in from Belmont after winning his career debut. The speed figure was poor but the trainer must expect major improvement or he wouldn't come all this way for a graded stakes race. The price should be solid thanks to the presence of two horses from Asmussen.

Hollywood Park Race 3 Gr. I Vanity Hcp. Play #1 Nashoba's Key
This filly has won all four of her lifetime starts and should get her Grade I win today. There are only four horses in here and she beat two of them last time out in a race over this track. the stretchout in distance, if anything, helps. Strong workouts. This might be the best older filly in the country by end of summer.

    Opinions only:

#6 Anamato in the Grade I American Oaks at Hollywood (Race 10)
#4 Her Majesty to score the upset in the Gr. I Prioress at Belmont (Race 8)
#4 Fabulous Strike to nip #7 Smokey Stover in the Gr.II Smile Sprint at Calder (Race 12)

      Clark: What's steroids?
Richie: Something that makes your pee-pee smaller.
Clark: There must be steroids in macaroni!

A small loss on the day ($7 based on $10 to win and place) as I went one-for-two. Nashoba's Key won, paying 4.20 and 2.40 while the Churchill horse broke poorly and was never in it.
