Christopher Ado’s Del Mar Handicap
Spot Play Selections, Analysis, and Wagering Strategies from Del Mar Sunday August 13, 2006 By Christopher AdoToday’s Action from Del Mar: I will highlight and play races 5, 6, and 7. In
addition, I will put together $18 into a Pick 3 (Races 5-7)
Race 5: Claiming $25,000 to $22,500, 1-Mile, Three year old Fillies MUDD IN YER EYE (#3, 6-1) in three starts since shipping back from Iowa,
this Gilded Time dark bay filly has not hit the board in each start as he
has been beaten by a combined margin of twenty-four lengths. Despite the
lack of performance from this filly, she makes a drop into restricted three
year old fillies, has illustrated a running style that is indicative of a
filly that will enjoy the stretch out to two turns, and earned the field’s
top last race Beyer Speed Figure of 68 in a exceptionally strong Starter
Allowance field that has produced multiple next time out winners. After
finishing second in her lone start this year, he returned from two month
layoff returning to Hollywood Park for trainer Mike Harrington and managed
to split his eight horse field in a exceptionally strong and highly rated
Starter Allowance event (86 Beyer Speed Figure). In that race, she sat good
trio behind three horse battle for the early lead through quick early
fractions of 21.58 and 44.72-seconds along the rail. She made a nice run
along the inside through the far turn and into the stretch and though beaten
by ten lengths she was one paced grinding style through the stretch to be
part of a distant photo for third. The strength of that race was validated
when the winner, Get Back Time, won her next two starts before finishing
second in the $100K Fleet Street Stakes and the sixth place finisher, Belong
to Parfait, came back to win making it a productive “key” race. She was
reeled back in three weeks and delivered a disappointing performance without
a real excuse. She stalked the pace along the inside, continued racing along
the rail around the turn, and did not follow through in a puzzling
performance. Trainer Mike Harrington showed his confidence by returning her
at the same level four weeks later and ran like a filly that will enjoy the
stretch out to two turns. She was devoid of early speed racing along the
rail early, move up along the rail on the turn, split rivals through the
stretch, and finished evenly through the drive earning a speed figure that
is par for this class level (Beyer par 69). The strength of that win was
validated when the runner-up, Brendolyn, and the fifth place finisher, Dixie
Courage, both returned to win making it a “key” race. She has bounced back
with four more works for a barn that has won with 20% of his starters
stretching out from sprint to route since the beginning of last year and is
not a stranger to the Del Mar oval having broken her maiden at 20-1 in her
second start. She should get a ground saving stalking trip and once the
leaders began to tire produced that grinding one paced style that she has
shown in sprints that will be affective at this one mile distance and best
of all she should be a generous price.
Wagering Strategies:
Play the (3) MUDD IN YER EYE to WIN (Minimum fair odds of 3-1 or better) Main Exactas: 3-6, 3-7, and 3-8. Small reverse for each.
Race 6: Allowance N1X, 1-1/16 Miles Turf, Three year olds and upward COUSIN JOE (#2, 4-1) must deal with other speed such as Greedy Way drawn
directly outside of him and More Daylight, but this four year old Steinlen
gelding has proven time and time again his ability to withstand the battles
for the early lead and still win the way and with post position two under
super apprentice Martin Garcia this dark bay is strictly the one to catch at
a hint of a price. Prior to reeling off two straight wins where he won by a
combined seven and a quarter lengths, he was very unlucky not to graduate
with his diploma on May 31 where he won the battle only to lose the war to
$80.20 upset win by Opa. In that race, home bred Harris bred gelding battle
head and head for the early lead with It’s Who You Know through crisp early
fractions of 23.19 and 46.70 seconds. Those two continued in the battle for
the lead to mid way on the far turn where he finally disposed of his pace
rival who tired badly to finish eighth beaten ten and a quarter lengths,
opened up a length and half length lead at mid stretch and was caught by the
opportunistic closer who rallied from fourth in the perfect stalking
position. His consistency was rewarded when he came back three weeks later
to break his maiden by three widening lengths where he was able to win the
battle for the lead and still win the war in a visually impressive
graduation effort. In that race, he showed excellent early speed along the
inside while being pressured by Hand Some Michael K through much slower
early fractions of 23.16 and 47.00 seconds. He disposed of the latter as he
weakened to finish eighth, opened up around the far turn, and did not stop
to win by three widening lengths. This win prompted the green light to go as
he came right back versus winners three weeks later to defeat winners in a
visually impressive performance where he was much the best earning the
field’s top last race Beyer Speed Figure of 93 which is par for this class
level (Beyer par 94). In that race, he battled for the early lead along side
his pace rival Unusually Chic as those two battled through quick early
splits of 23.17 and 45.84 seconds. That faster second quarter weakened the
efforts of the latter as he tired to finish fourth beaten 12-¾ lengths, but
Cousin Joe did not tire as he opened up a three length win into mid stretch,
and won going away leaving his field well strung out, sign of a quality
victory. The strength of that win was validated this past Thursday when the
runner up, Buck Tuddy Buck, came back to win Allowance N1X here at Del Mar
in a productive heat. He has bounced back with two more works in the interim
that indicate he has held his form since last win he is comfortable at
today’s mile and sixteenth trip having broken his maiden at this distance
with two runner up efforts from three starts. He should be able to control
the pace from the outset, shake loose from his pace rivals, and have enough
left to hold off the closers through the drive at what could be a hint of a
price around his morning line price.
Wagering Strategies:
Play the (2) COUSIN JOE to WIN (Minimum fair odds of 3-1 or better) Main Exactas: 2-5, 2-6, and 2-10. Small reverse for each.
Race 7: Claiming $25,000 to $22,500, 6-½ Furlongs, Three year olds OPIMIAN (#4, 10-1) is an intriguing prospect that returns in for a claiming
price for the first since breaking his maiden two starts back at Hollywood
Park and his morning line is too high considering his speed figures on the
main track are par for this class level (Beyer par 77). He returned from a
two and half month layoff while trying wet fast sealed surface for the first
time on April 14 at Santa Anita and was an excellent second earning a Beyer
Speed Figure that is par for this class level and was best considering the
circumstances of the track surface. Breaking from post position six he was
force to race wide stalking the dueling leaders, made a strong wide move
into the teeth of a fast pace to loom to contention for the lead, and simply
was out run by the rail skimming winner Get Funky in a exceptionally highly
rated victory (85 Beyer Speed Figure) in which the winner returned to win in
his next start before running third in the Oceanside Stakes and La Jolla
Handicap in his next starts respectively. He was best when you consider he
was wide throughout versus a strong pro inside bias. After inconclusive try
on the turf course two weeks later, he graduated earning a par speed figure
on June 16 at Hollywood Park where he was much the best when you consider
the amount of ground lost throughout. He broke from post thirteen in a
fourteen horse field and stalked the pace widest of all down the
backstretch, continued losing ground as he moved closer into the far turn,
bid for the lead to take over the lead entering the stretch and kick clear
leaving his field well strung out in a race validated when the seventh place
finisher returned to graduate in his next start. He stepped up to face
winners for the first time three weeks later and had a troubled start that
hampered his chances. In that race, he broke slowly leaving the gate to be
about a length show, failed to show his early speed, made a nice run along
the inside through the far turn and into the stretch, and did not go on to
finish fourth earning another speed figure that is par for this class level.
He makes that all important drop to face restricted three year old only
claiming event only and has bounced back with two more works including an
impressive five furlong work out on July 30 at Del Mar where Andy Harrington
stated he was “best inside barn mate Vice Admiral finishing willingly while
under a light hold late in 37 flat, 1:01 2/5. Solid looking drill; holding
edge.” Jockey Luis Jauregui replaces Aaron Gryder as he has ridden 2 wins
from his last 7 mounts for this barn since the beginning of last year and
has enough tactical speed to be forwardly placed to either prompt the early
pace or stalk if someone decides to go and challenge morning line favorite
Honest Wager. With a low profile rider and coming off a off the board effort
versus Starter Allowance rivals makes him our best LONGSHOT bet on Sunday’s
Del Mar program.
Wagering Strategies:
Play the (4) OPIMIAN to WIN (Minimum fair odds of 6-1 or better) Main Exactas: 4-2, 4-3, and 4-5. Small reverse for each.
Del Mar Race 5 Pick 3
Race 5: (3) MUDD IN YER EYE, (6) Ask Kathy, and (7) Meet the Heat
Race 6: (2) COUSIN JOE, (6) Miracle Maker, and (10) Appointment
Race 7: (2) Honest Wager, (3) Li Bien, and (4) Opimian
Ticket 1: 3 / 2-6-10 / 2-3-4 = 1 x 3 x 3 x $1 = $9
Ticket 2: 3-6-7 / 2 / 2-3-4 = 3 x 1 x 3 x $1 = $9
Total Wager: $18
