Nice write up by a web site of some picks for Del mar
Christopher Ado’s Del Mar Handicap
August 5th, 2006 HorseHats.com picks
Today’s Action from Del Mar: I will highlight and play races 4, 7, 8, and 9.
In addition, I will put together $48 into the Pick 4 (Races 7-10).
Race 4: Starter Allowance, 6-½ Furlongs, Three year olds and upward LIMITED CREOLE (#5, 4-1) must deal with the presence of other front runners
such as Senator Matty and Hot Tizzy but those two pace rivals most likely
will be dueled into defeat once this son of Cactus Creole leaves the mid way
point of this race and heads for home as this lightly raced bay is strictly
the speed of this field and must be caught as he makes a significant but
realistic drop from California bred Allowance N1X into a restricted starter
allowance event. After only one race as a two year old where he managed to
cross the wire ahead of only one horse, he returned from an eight and half
month layoff as a first time gelding for new trainer Peter Miller on June 25
and came back as a new horse returning $34.40 mutual earning a Beyer Speed
Figure of 65 which is well below the typical average winning Beyer Speed
Figure for this class level (Beyer par 85), but the manner in which he
earned this victory makes it legitimate win as he overcame a less than ideal
trip to win by diminishing length and a quarter. In that race, he broke from
the rail and did not break quickly but quickly rushed up along the rail to
battle for the lead with his pace rival, Girvan, as those two were length
and half clear of their nearest pursuer through a 21.42 second opening
quarter. He dueled Girvan into submission through enervating 44.35 half mile
as the latter could not keep up through that very fast second quarter as he
tired to finish twelfth beaten 30-½ lengths. Limited Creole opened up a
large five length lead turning for home and drifted out in the drive while
understandably staggering through the drive to hold off the deep closer
Echezeaux to win by length and a quarter. His excellent early speed through
quick early fractions after a slow start impressed me that he deserved a
look at this class level in his next start, but his connections decided to
return him in a California bred Allowance N1X in his next start and he ran
very well under the circumstances to hold third in a race that set up for
the closers as the first and second place finishers rallied from seventh and
eighth. In that race, he broke from the disadvantageous rail and was pushed
away from the gate to duel with second choice, Shootist, through a quick
21.50 second opening quarter. He began to gradually inch away from the
latter he opened up a clear lead through a snappy 44.01 second half mile and
appeared as if he was home free at mid stretch before the earlier efforts
took its toll as he gradually began to tire to hold third in a highly rated
Allowance N1X for California breds (92 Beyer) earning Beyer Speed Figure of
80 which is within scope of par. What was so impressive about his defeat was
that his early splits were the fastest of the five sprints on the card which
would have easily won the starter allowance race run five races earlier on
that July 23 program. He is reeled back in thirteen days as he reunites with
Martin Garcia who has been aboard for 3 wins from his last 8 mounts for this
barn in the past two months and more importantly gets off the rail. Four of
the ten races at this distance were won by horses on the lead after the
initial half mile and that is where Limited Creole will be as takes this
group gate to wire as our BEST BET on today’s pride laden Del Mar program.
Wagering Strategies: Play the (5) LIMITED CREOLE to WIN (Minimum fair odds of 9-5 or better) Main Exactas: 5-1 and 5-2. Small reverse for each.
Race 7: Maiden Special Weight, 1-1/8 Miles Turf, Three year olds and upward DADSALITTLEUNUSUAL (#10, 15-1) is my co top choice with FALCON SCOTT as I
have been eagerly awaiting this bay three year old to switch over to the
turf since arriving here to Del Mar last month. In three starts, this home
bred owned by David Abrams & Tom Roberts has not hit the board in each race
but he has had legitimate excuses and merits strong consideration as he
switches to the turf for the first time for the prolific turf sire, Unusual
Heat. He made his debut in a open $40,000 maiden claiming event on May 29
where he was sent off as the longest shot on the board at 57-1 and he ran to
his odds finishing eighth and last beaten nineteen starts but he was never
given a fair chance to show his ability as he broke slowly and took up at
the start to lose whatever chance he had at the break. He did not run return
to the races for two months when he returned on July 20 at Del Mar as a new
gelding off a blistering half mile work in 48 3/5 from the gate five days
before that race showing signs that route on the turf could be in his
immediate future as National Turf’s Andy Harrington stated that he was
“ taken in hand from the get to going in 24 3/5, 37 2/6 was only let run a
bit late, finishing like a shot in 48 3/5 (11 1/5 last furlong). Looking
very nice down here.” He made his second start in a restricted $40,000
maiden claiming event and was given a race illustrating signs that he is not
a sprinter. Jockey Alex Bisono took a firm hold of him leaving the gate as
he was not asked early trailing his field early. He commenced a mild wide
rally around the turn to pick up momentum and that continued in the stretch
as he managed to cross the wire ahead of three others splitting his field in
a improved performance where this race proved to be used a prep for a two
turn route race six days later as he stretched out to mile and sixteenth for
the first time and finished a better than looked sixth beaten 6-¼ lengths
where his late run was hampered by a spill at the top of the stretch. He
breaking from post position nine in a ten horse field, he was able to come
over and save ground into the backstretch. He came out three to four wide
around the far turn to began to pick up momentum when he had to steadied as
Esroh broke down nearing the quarter pole unseating Ricardo Jaime forcing
Victor Espinoza to steady his mount away from that incident past the quarter
pole losing his best chance. He is being reeled back in only ten days and it
is great sign to see the meet’s leading rider, Victor Espinoza, remain in
the irons as his sire, Unusual Heat, has had plenty of success with his
progeny trying the turf for the first time in the past year having won 16%
clip. Add Heat (January 27, $92.20), Evrybdyluvsdaheat (August 13, 2004,
$19.80), and Heated Rebel (April 12, $17.80) were just some of the examples
of horses switching to the turf for the first time by Unusual Heat and
coming out victorious at very nice mutual prices. Trainer Barry Abrams has
shown a healthy profitable return of investment in the past year with his
horses switching from dirt to turf and trying turf for the first time.
Though he is poorly drawn, the success of his sire’s progeny trying turf for
the first time, the fact Victor Espinoza remains aboard, his trainer’s
success with progeny of Unusual Heat and his work out on July 15 are all
signs that he is capable of handling his new surface as the price will more
than compensate for the risk.
Wagering Strategies:
Play the (10) DADSALITTLEUNUSUAL to WIN (Minimum fair odds of 12-1 or
better)
Play the (9) FALCON SCOTT to WIN (Minimum fair odds of 6-1 or better) Main Exactas: 9-1, 9-6, and 9-10 Main Exactas: 10-1, 10-6, and 10-9.
Race 8: G3 Sorrento, 6-½ Furlongs, Two year olds Fillies SHAWKLIT SUNDAE (#7, 4-1) could not foresee anyone else in this field
getting a better trip than this daughter of Mr. Shawklit who has drawn
towards the outside in this seven horse field allowing jockey David Flores
to see what develops in this first eighth of a mile leaving the chute and
using this fillies tactical speed to his advantage at what could be a hint
of a price. She received plenty of wagering support in her debut going off
as the 3-1 second choice and was absolutely given a race by trainer Adam
Kitchingman in what has returned to be a highly rated and productive maiden
race. In that race, she was not quick, not asked for run early allowing the
eventual winner, Little City, a two length head start. She raced green and
was climbing early while third to last saving ground into the turn,
maneuvered towards the rail into the turn and put in a strong move to get
closer and finished evenly towards the rail while 6-¾ lengths clear of the
rest of the field finishing only a length behind the winner in a final time
of 51.32 seconds which was the fastest of the seventeen races at four and
half furlongs during the Hollywood Park spring-summer meeting in what has
turned out to be a productive “key” maiden race. The fifth place finisher,
Shes Got Skills, came back to break her maiden on June 25 in a five and half
furlong race on the turf and the third place finisher, Outofthepast, came
back on July 3 to break her maiden by two lengths. She was reeled back in
only fourteen days and broke her maiden a lot easier than her diminishing
three quarter of length margin of victory over subsequent next time out
winner, Company Secret. She right in front leaving the gate to lead early
and immediate found herself on an uncontested lead without any pace pressure
early, and won by a measured three quarters without being asked for her best
in what resulted to be a paid work out. She returned three weeks later in
the Landaluce Stakes where crossed the wire fourth but was disqualified and
place fifth for lugging in and forcing the post time favorite, Thru N Thru,
to steady sharply at mid stretch. Despite that effort, that incident was a
result of more of her inexperience than anything else in this troubled
effort. She was pushed away from the gate to stalk the favorite from the
inside down the backstretch, she came off the rail into the two path and
moved up to battle with the favorite around the far turn, she took over the
lead turning for home when she lugged in badly when hit with the whip
almost putting the pacesetter over the fence at the eighth pole, steadied,
and lost all chance in a race that fell apart for the closers as the horses
that were seventh-fourth-third after the first quarter of a mile were
first-second-third crossing the wire. Since that race thirty five days ago,
she has come back with three works including a five furlong work in 59 2/5
that National Turf’s Andy Harrington stated that she “worked fine enough
here in 35 2/5, 59 4/5 riding leading on her late; nothing to knock,” as she
comes into this race in good form. Her career best 76 Beyer Speed Figure
earned in her debut makes her a perfect fit in this race and can either sit
just off the pace if a battle for the lead ensues or prompt the pace as her
outside post position gives jockey David Flores plenty of options as eight
of the ten races at this distance were won either gate to wire or by horses
no more than length and half off the lead after the initial half mile. Her
tactical speed is a big asset to the score the mild upset over vulnerable
morning line favorite, Untouched Talent, and second choice Company Secret in
a race where I feel it is strictly a two horse affair between our top choice
and Outofthepast.
Wagering Strategies:
Play the (7) SHAWKLIT SUNDAE to WIN (Minimum fair odds of 5-2 or better) Main Exacta Box: 6-7.
Race 9: Allowance N1X, 6-½ Furlongs, Fillies and mares, Three and up YODELADYTOO (#1, 10-1) has drawn the rail which has seen only one winner
from ten races at this distance this meet and after twenty two starts where
he was winless, trainer Bill Spawr finally visited the winner circle
yesterday with post time favorite, Axiomatic, and with eight seconds or
thirds, it is time for this barn to began to heat up and this Swiss Yodeler
filly can began in that trend as she cuts back to a distance where she has
yet to taste defeat in two tries and has an adaptable running style where
she can lead, press, or even stalk the pace which she has used in all four
career victories. After being given a race in her first start off a two
month layoff on May 4 going five and half furlongs on the turf she returned
to her preferred main track surface parlayed ideal trip en route to a three
and half length victory earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 86 which is close to
average winning Beyer required to win at this level (Beyer par 90). Catching
a field with very little early speed, she broke running to set a measured
early pace, came under pressure leaving the backstretch and around the far
turn as the post time favorite, Dance of the Year and long shot Miss Bobble
Quick applied the pressure. She shook off both of those challenges as they
tired to finish fifth and fourth respectively, kicked clear again into the
stretch, and won going away as she was ridden out towards the wire in this
close to par performance. She was claimed for $32,000 by trainer Bill Spawr
who elected to give this filly almost two months off when she returned in a
Allowance N1X where she could not be claimed and stretched her out an
additional eighth of a mile to mile and a sixteenth for the first time where
she tired in the final furlong to finish third beaten 2-¾ lengths to the
$77.80 upset winner Donerella. Despite blowing a length and a half lead at
mid stretch she verified that her previous speed figure was complete
legitimate as she had to run hard early, middle, and late in that mile and
sixteenth race where she ran the best race. She was sent to the front and
vied for the lead with Lake Marina as those two opened up a two and a half
and two length lead through enervating splits of 22.90 and 45.84 seconds.
After battling with that rival, she put that rival away into the far turn as
she tired to finish seventh beaten 6-½ lengths and immediately faced
challenges from the perfect trip stalker and favorite Kelly Mac and She’s
Nobel around the far turn. She turned away those challenge, opened up into
mid stretch, and was collared by the closers as the first-second-fourth
place finishers rallied from eighth-ninth-fifth after the first quarter of a
mile in a race where this chestnut filly was best. She remains protected in
this Allowance N1X off a tough beat which is positive sign and both of this
fillies wins this year occurred with Jon Court in the irons who remains in
the irons. Though she lead en route to her May 21 victory, she successfully
rallied from fourth to win at this distance back in February at Santa Anita.
She should have plenty of foundation on the cut back figures for a ground
saving pace prompting or stalking trip at what could be a healthy over laid
price.

Main Ticket: 9-10 / 6-7 / 1-3-6 / 1-4-6-8 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 4 x $1 = $48
Ticket 1: 1-6 / 6-7 / 1-3-6 / 1-4-6-8 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 4 x $1 = $48
Ticket 2: 9-10 / 2 / 1-3-6 / 1-4-6-8 = 2 x 1 x 3 x 4 x $1 = $24
Ticket 3: 9-10 / 6-7 / 7 / 1-4-6-8 = 2 x 2 x 1 x 4 x $1 = $16
Total Investment: $136
These are my planned Pick 4 plays for today. For those on a budget, please
focused on the $48 main ticket. Tickets 1-3 are my backup tickets centering
around our main and backups. This structure works best as two things are
accomplished. Firstly, you show your opinion for a horse by separating them
to main and backups. Secondly, you save $56 by following this structure than
if you played a 4 x 3 x 4 x 4 combination which would cost you $192.

Guide
