Are you kidding me? Politicians could put a tariff on outsourcing to keep more jobs here, but they don't because it would hurt their campaigns and re-elections.
The government put heavier import taxes on China not too long ago, because I believe it had something to do with China selling weapons or dealing with Iran in weapon making.
So the government puts a tariff on to keep jobs local. Now tee-shirts are all made in the USA. These tee-shirts now cost twice as much. Tee shirt sales go down b/c of price. Tee shirt companies lay off employees b/c no sales. Higher unemployment, less money in economy, and now material providers are losing jobs b/c they can't sell product to make shirts, truckers lose jobs b/c no tee-shirts to deliver, cashiers lose jobs b/c nothing to ring up. Is that correct?

One single event. The War in Iraq, has cost this country untold billions. This is where the surplus has gone. Whether we should be there or not is a different argument. Reagan was in office during the end of the Cold War, Bush Sr. during the 1st Gulf War and now Bush Jr. I don't agree with alot of what Bush has done, but I do not think it's appropriate to blame him for budget deficits largely as a result of defending this country.

Originally posted by cd329Yes Tony my theory is a nice dream, but your idea is not a good one either, because what you are basically saying is that the American worker should work for less, so we can compete with other countries. We in America have differnt values and want more things in life then people in other countires want. You would have to change every person in society. Poeople in other countries are content with not having much in life and are happy if they can just put a meal on the table. Thats how people in other countries have been raised, we are not like that in America, so unless you are gonna completely change what America has been about, its not going to work.
What it appears you want to happen is that American workers work for such low wages, that they can no longer afford thier own homes, 2 cars in the driveway, t.v.s in every room, play stations and xboxes for the kids etc etc. Because in order to compete with other countries, you will need to convince all of us that we shouldnt have all of these things. So who in society will have the houses and nice things then? The rich will, because what you are suggesting is that America should just become a counrty of 2 classes of people rich and the poor. Its already happening and in 50 years,am sure the middle class will be wiped off the map.
Honestly after reading some of the posts in this thread, am convinced some of you would love to live in a country with a dictator, you would be in your glory, but only if you could be part of that dictatorship. This thread has really depressed me and have lost a little respect for some members of the human race.
you make an awful lot of assumptions of what i think.....I do not think anything...I am simply stating basic economics of a free market....And you sound like a pig heade american....Other people want what we want...Do not kid yourself....I deal with folks all over the world...They also want computers, houses and the like...>So you are saying just because we want something we should have it....Well that is not how a free market works.....You got lucky....You were in the fire union and had a good pay and pension.....Do you really think Americans can really afford those things...Most people are weak....They buy shit they can not afford because their neighbors have it....They buy cars they can not afford them, but think since they work hard they are entitled to it....Well that is fine because when their house values went up, they borrowed against it...Well you know what, that type of thinking and borrowing to get "things" will bite people in the ass....A simple way to succeed in this life is this, "Live below your means"...."buy what you can afford" and "save at least 10% of your pay"......Life was better when all us kids had 1 toy and a ball glove....Were we any less happy? Hell no>.. We did not need a million toys to be happy......I say the way we/you view things is tilted......It is all right to want things....but people must be able to afford them....Because like i said before...life is about options and if you are over leveraged...you have no options......Being successful (whether you work for someone or not) takes discipline and sacrifice.....
Every fucking kid has a car....a cellphone.....and it is on credit....
So maybe some of our problems lie right here in how we over-consume things...that we can not afford in the first place.....
Are 10 pairs of $200 sneakers necessary for high school kids????

Winner,
I dont know if you own a business or work for a company.
My guess is you own your own business and thats why you think workers dont deserve a raise.
Because if you work for a company, am sure in 7 years you and your fellow workers have gotton a raise and if so why did you take it? What makes you deserve a raise over a minimum wage worker?
Your comment about why the minimum wage is what it is because the government says thats what it should be, could be one of the stuipdiest comments i have ever read. Duhhhhhhhhhh, no kidding the government tells us what its going to be, but who is really telling the government what they want it to be? Friggin big business is, thats who. The politicians are just passing the laws that they want passed, which help their profits.
7 years ago the minimum wage worker working 40 hours a week at 5.15 an hour earned 206 bucks for the week.
Today he is still earning the same 206 bucks, only theres a big difference that 206 bucks is no longer worth 206 bucks, its probably only worth 150 or less. So really in all honesty how can you sit here and say, to bad thats what he deserves to make. The minimum wage workers pay has basically gone down.
Tomorrow why dont you go into your bosses office and tell him you want to take a cut in pay, for the good of the company.
I know exactly why alot of you have the thoughts you do about this, its because you arent a minimum wage worker and probably will never have to be in that spot, but am sure if you were, each and every one of you would be here singing a way differnt tune.
Some of you need to learn the phrase do onto others as you would do onto yourself.Last edited by cd329; 06-27-2006, 03:46 AM.

on many products no....But when i was in the promotion business when we sold to unions they had to have American Made hats and T's and they would whine because they had to pay $15.00 vs $5.00 on the hats and $16 vs $5.50 on the T's.......Then they want us to discount it........how can we when their union brothers sell it to us for double what an imported t shirt cost???? It was not our problem the price was high....We made no more.....It was the Union shop.....
Electronics we can not buy.....among other things....

BC,
You obviously are an entrepenurial (sp) person to have started this site. Also, you have banner ads for advertising to recoup your (or some) of your expenses. If you decided to start charging people, the market would dictate that price, if any, that you receive. If too high, people will jet. If just right, people will pay. The market should decide. But if you had a staff, and the govt forced you to pay more to people, how would you deal with it? Either lay people off, charge more for subscriptions or ads, or make less money yourself. Free market should dictate all of it.
