    Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

    13) If you live in the Embassy Gardens apartments in London, you have access to a swimming pool that is elevated 115 feet in the air. The 82-foot-long heated pool, which stretches across two flat roofs of the Embassy Gardens’ Legacy buildings, has a clear floor— there is no freakin’ way I could stay in there very long. Looks like it is going to crash to the street any second now.

The pool utilizes an eight-inch-thick acrylic frame with a nearly 12-inch-thick base that’s just shy of 10 feet deep and weighs a whopping 50 tons- it ain’t crashing to the street.

And it looks really cool. Would still make me queasy though.

    12) Denver 147, Portland 140, 2OT:
    — Denver’s Jokic scored 38 points, had 9 assists, 11 rebounds.
    — Portland’s Lillard was 12-17 on arc, scored 55 points in an amazing losing effort.
    — Rest of the Trailblazers were 9-31 on the arc.
    — Portland’s Powell was +11 in 51:00; they were minus-18 in 7:00 he sat out.
    — Its not who starts, its who finishes: Denver’s Morris didn’t start, but scored 28 points in 41:00.

    11) Quote of the Day, part 2:
“They’re trying to play tough, push our guys around, talk shit, but we can do that too. We show them as soon as we came back here. We can push guys around too. ……..we can be physical, but we can win games as well. Now we’re coming to your home to win this game again. We’ll send you on vacation.”
Clint Capela, Atlanta Hawks, who lead the Knicks 3-1.

Memo to Clint Capela; don’t wake the sleeping bear. Series ain’t over. Its been five years since the Hawks won a playoff series.

The great football coach Paul Brown once said: “When you win, say nothing. When you lose, say less.” Sound advice.

    10) Monday night in Arizona, not only did Jacob deGrom throw six shutout innings, he also knocked in a run with a single, after Arizona walked the batter ahead of him intentionally to load the bases.

Before that hit, deGrom was 8-18 batting this season; he played shortstop in college, the guy can hit. Sketchy strategy loading the bases to pitch to him.

    9) Speaking of Mets-Diamondbacks series, Wednesday afternoon’s game isn’t on TV, it is on YouTube. Just put your phone/laptop on, and it is there for free.

    8) Quote of the Day, part 3:
“It’s only cheating if you get caught.”
Bill Cowher, talking about the Patriots’ SpyGate debacle.

    7) Padres’ SS Fernando Tatis left Tuesday’s game with an oblique issue; they say Tatis is day-to-day, but oblique injuries tend to linger.

    6) Florida Gators football coach Dan Mullen has a new contract extension; he will now get paid an average of $7.6M per season through 2026.

In the SEC, only Alabama’s Nick Saban ($9.1M) and LSU’s Ed Orgeron ($8.7M) make more.

    5) Phoenix 115, Lakers 85— Daytime talkshows will be buzzing after this beating; Lakers aren’t so good without Anthony Davis. Suns lead the series 3-2.

By the way, you can bet on almost anything; one prop bet was Lebron James’ total of points, rebounds and assists was 44.5 for this game.

James scored 24 points, had 5 rebounds, 7 assists— the under hit.

    4) Baltimore 7, Minnesota 4:
    — Orioles snap their 14-game losing streak.
    — Orioles snap an 0-16 skid against Minnesota.

    3) Colorado 3, Texas 2 (11):
    — Winning run scored on a wild pitch.
    — Texas has lost 13 consecutive road games.

    2) Time flies; Roger Goodell has been the NFL commissioner for 15 years already. Guy banks about $40M a year, so he ain’t going anywhere anytime soon.

    1) Went to a Wendy’s drive-thru the other day, for first time in 20 months or so; prices have gone way up, like 30% up. Burgers were still good, but fast food is supposed to be relatively cheap, and this wasn’t. It also wasn’t very fast.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

                13) 10-12 years ago, I read a book about college football called Meat Market, written by Bruce Feldman. It was mostly all about the recruiting period from December to Signing Day a few weeks later, and it dealt with the Ole Miss football program, then coached by Ed Orgeron.

After reading that book 10-12 years ago, if you had told me that Orgeron would making $8M a year coaching LSU in 2021, I’d have laughed at you, laughed loudly. I came away with two main questions after reading the book:

                — Why would this guy give any outsider access to his program?
                — Why would anyone, anyone hire this guy to be a head coach????

                12) But, 10-12 years later, Orgeron has won a national title at LSU and now makes $8M a year. Go figure. He is a GREAT recruiter, and the Brady/Burrow OC/QB combination hit the jackpot for him in 2019- they’re both in the NFL now.

This week, LSU fired its offensive line coach; this fall, they’ll have two new coordinators, a new passing game coordinator, and now a new OL coach, after last year’s 5-5 disappointment.

We will see if LSU’s success is sustainable; will they land Arch Manning, the prize recruit in Louisiana? I’ve heard the kid has some relatives who were good quarterbacks, but they all played at either Ole Miss or Tennessee.

                11) Dodgers 14, Cardinals 3— St Louis starter Carlos Martinez faced 12 batters; 10 of them scored. This was the most runs the Dodgers scored in the first inning of any game since May 21, 1952, when they whacked the Reds 19-1, in front of 11,580 fans at Ebbets Field.

                Some notes from that game:
                — Brooklyn’s pitcher Chris Van Cuyk went 4-5 in the game.
                — Gil Hodges, manager of the ’69 Mets, batted 7th for the Dodgers.
                — Rube Walker was the Dodgers’ catcher, and the ’69 Mets’ pitching coach.
                — Guy named Dick Williams subbed in for Duke Snider late in the game; he is better known as the manager who won two World Series for the A’s in the 70’s.

                10) Speaking of Dick Williams, my Mt Rushmore of Oakland A’s managers:
                — Dick Williams— Only 3 years, but 3 division titles, 2 World Series titles.
                — Bob Melvin— The current skipper is totally underrated, a great manager.
                — Tony LaRussa— Won three straight AL titles from 1988-90.
                — Art Howe— The movie Moneyball did him a huge disservice; he was an excellent skipper.

                9) My Mt Rushmore of Rams head coaches:
                — Dick Vermeil— Won Super Bowl XXXIV, the greatest football game ever.
                — Sean McVay— Four winning seasons, three playoff spots, hopefully lot more to come.
                — John Robinson— Restored team from dumpster fire status in the 80’s, had misfortune of coaching at same time that the 49ers had their great teams.
                — Chuck Knox— His Rams were perennial playoff teams in the 70’s.

                8) Mike Krzyzewski is going to retire as Duke’s basketball coach after this coming season; he’s been Duke’s coach since 1980, has won five national titles at Duke. Assistant coach Jon Scheyer has been named the next coach— good luck there.

                7) I won’t mention the guy’s name, because it is today’s trivia question on this site, but the poor bastard who replaced John Wooden at UCLA went 52-9 in two seasons, but it wasn’t close to being good enough— he left after two seasons, and started up a brand new program halfway across the country. Guy was a hell of a coach, though, but Wooden, just like Krzyzewski will be, was an impossible act to follow.

Some casino should run a prop bet: who replaces Jon Scheyer as Duke’s coach in 2024?

                6) There will be scapegoats; Danny Ainge is out as the head of basketball operations with the Celtics- Brad Stevens replaces him. Stevens will help choose his successor as head coach.

Random fact: Celtics have won one NBA title since 1986.

                5) Mavericks 105, Clippers 100:
                — Road team has won all five series games.
                — Luke Doncic had 42 points, 14 assists.
                — Dallas was minus-10 in the 5:00 Doncic sat out.

                4) Knicks, Wizards, Grizzlies all got eliminated Wednesday night.

                3) Two baseball games went over the total in the first inning Wednesday; Cards-Dodgers, and Mets-Arizona.

                2) Now there is a story that Colorado Rockies might be hesitant to deal free agent-t0 be Trevor Story, figuring they won’t get that much for him anyway, since the team will only have him for half a season or so.

Not sure the Rockies’ front office has any idea what they’re doing- they already fired the GM earlier this season. Bud Black is a very good manager, but players win games, managers put the players in position to win the games, but if the players aren’t good enough, forget about it.

Losing Story this winter without getting anything in return would be baseball malpractice.

                1) How baseball has changed; Game 1 of the 1974 World Series, A’s @ Dodgers. A’s lead 2-1 in the 5th inning, but starter Ken Holtzman struggles, and the A’s replace him with Rollie Fingers, their closer. They put their closer in the game in the fifth inning!!!!

Fingers threw 4.1 innings, gave up one run, before Catfish Hunter got the last out in a 3-2 win. The freakin’ closer got 13 outs in one game, so when you hear people say how modern closers are the best ever, consider that one for a second. Rollie Fingers was bleeping awesome.

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here……..

                      13) So you want to be a big league ballplayer?

Travis Blankenhorn was a 3rd round pick of the Twins in the 2015 draft; he didn’t get to AA until 2019, but he made it to the majors last year, getting three at-bats for Minnesota. He can play all over the field, which makes him more marketable.

This season, he’s been a very busy guy:
                      — He went 2-11 for the Twins’ AAA team.
                      — He scored as a pinch-runner in his only appearance for the big league Twins.
                      — May 14, Dodgers picked him up on waivers.

                      — He went 0-3 for the Dodgers’ AAA team.
                      — May 24, Seattle picked him up on waivers from LA.
                      — He went 6-20 for the Mariners’ AAA team.
                      — June 1st, the Mets picked him up on waivers.
                      — He’s played in two games for the big league Mets.

Today is June 3rd; this guy has already played for five teams this season.

                      12) Mets, by the way, have used 45 players this year, the most of any team.

                      11) Rays 9, New York 2:
                      — Tampa Bay’s first complete game in five years, 731 games (Ryan Yarbrough)

Michael Kay is New York’s TV play-by-play; he was a whiny baby during this game, crying about the home plate umpire not giving New York any calls. Now he knows how everyone else feels when his team gets all the calls in key spots (Jeremy Giambi was safe at home in 2002!!!!)

                      10) Oh yeah, that reminds me of Moneyball; why wasn’t the manager (Art Howe) included in the A’s organizational meetings, but Ron Washington (the 3rd base coach) was? And when Howe left the A’s, why wasn’t Washington named manager, instead of Ken Macha?

Washington had to go to the Rangers to become a manager; Texas is one of the A’s rivals, and they let him go there instead of naming him their manager. You wonder how much license the movie makers took when they made Washington such a big part of the film.

                      9) Suns 113, Lakers 100— Phoenix was up 29 in the first half; not a good look for the Lakers to go out so meekly. An injured Anthony Davis played five uneventful minutes. Devin Booker scored 47 points for the Suns.

                      8) Nuggets 126, Trailblazers 115— Denver advances in six games; Nikola Jokic had his usual 36 points. Jamychal Green was +22 in 23:00 off the bench.

                      7) Rockies 11, Rangers 6:
                      — Texas has lost 15 in a row on the road.
                      — Colorado may be 4-22 on the road, but they’re 9-2 in last 11 home games.

                      6) Brewers 7, Diamondbacks 4— Arizona has lost 14 in a row on the road.

                      5) Pirates 5, Marlins 3— Jacob Stallings hit a bases-clearing double in the 8th inning to score the game-winning runs.

                      4) Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL changed their name to the Edmonton Elks; they can keep the EE logo on their helmets. Smooth transition; who knew it was so easy?

Someone should tell this to Daniel Snyder, who didn’t have the good sense to switch from Redskins to RedTails, which also would’ve been an easy transition to make.

                      3) Someone should also tell the Cleveland Indians, who will be rebranding soon, but they’re taking the long way to a new name- their initial list of potential new names consisted of 1,198 names. Lot of names.

My suggestion; Cleveland Spiders- the hats would be awesome and back in the 1890’s, there was a team called the Cleveland Spiders, so it kind of makes sense.

                      2) New Jersey Devils/Philadelphia 76ers are owned by the same organization, which strikes me as a little odd, seeing how the Devils/Philly Flyers are rivals.

                      1) There are only three major league baseball games this Monday, and one of those is a makeup game. Sounds like the 2021 schedule was made before they moved the amateur draft to the All-Star break- Monday is the day when the draft was usually held.

                                Saturday’s Den: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

                                13) June 4, 2016, the White Sox acquired pitcher James Shields from San Diego; he went 16-35, 5.31 in 76 dismal starts for Chicago, after having been 114-90 up to that point in his career.

What makes it (a lot) more disturbing is who the White Sox gave up to get Shields; P Erik Johnson and a young outfielder, Fernando Tatis Jr.

                                Whoops.

                                12) I enjoy fantasy baseball, but it can be freakin’ baffling, especially if you have a pitcher from the Tampa Bay Rays on your team.

Josh Fleming is on my team, and I have zero idea, none, how they decide when to take him out of games:
                                — April 19, they took him out when he was throwing a 1-hitter in 6th inning (65 PT)
                                — May 16, they took him out when he was throwing a 1-hitter after 5 innings (53 PT)

Why do you take guys out when they’re on a roll?

Then last night in Texas, they leave him in to throw 100 pitches when he was giving up a lot of hits- he gave up five runs on 10 hits in seven IP. Yarbrough had thrown a complete game the day before, so their bullpen was fresh. No idea how they do things, not that they care what I think.

                                11) Only one major league pitcher has ever thrown a no-hitter on his birthday; George Mullin threw a no-hitter for Detroit on his 32nd birthday, way back in 1912.

                                10) So far this season, American League teams are 59-50 vs their NL rivals.

                                9) There have been 11 times where a player hit a walk-off homer in consecutive games; last time it happened was 2011, when Albert Pujols did it.

                                8) Clippers 104, Mavericks 97 (series 3-3):
                                — Kawhi Leonard scored 45 for the Clippers.
                                — Road team won all six series games.
                                — Clippers outscored Dallas 31-20 in 4th quarter.

This is the 9th series in Dallas history where they led 3-2 in games; they won the first eight series. We’ll see how they do in Game 7 Sunday.

                                7) Wish the NBA playoffs was all best-of-3 series until the Finals, which could be best-of-5; just think it would be more interesting if there was a better chance of an upset.

Understood that money rules, so the more games the better, but the shorter series would make it more like March Madness, and would likely increase TV ratings.

                                6) Portland Trailblazers fired coach Terry Stotts after nine years; he went 402-318 in the regular season, but 22-40 in playoffs- his Blazers made the playoffs the last eight seasons.

                                5) Royals 14, Twins 5— Kansas City led 13-2 in the 2nd inning. No bueno. Royals are quietly 29-26, only two games out of the 2nd Wild Card slot in the American League.

                                4) Padres 2, Mets 0:
                                — Blake Snell took a no-hitter into the 7th inning.
                                — San Diego has won its last 12 home games.

                                3) They’re going to bring the USFL back? Seriously? Back in the 80’s, the USFL was a good spring football league with some legit stars- Jim Kelly, Steve Young, Herschel Walker. It was good football, but off-field issues sabotaged the league.

Now they’re talking about a re-boot in 2022; the XFL is also supposed to be starting up again next year. Sounds like a busy spring/summer next year.

                                2) There are 43 bowl games scheduled in college football this fall; this week, I found a printout of spreads from the 1981 bowls- there were 15 bowls back then.

                                1) Mike Zimmer has been head coach of the Minnesota Vikings for seven years; he is the longest tenured coach in the NFL right now, who hasn’t been to the Super Bowl. He is 64-47-1 in regular season games, only 2-3 in playoff games.
