    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Odds to make the Final Four this season:

    -$140— Kansas

    -$110— Baylor, Gonzaga

    +$150— Dayton

    +$250— Duke, Kentucky

    +$300— Louisville, Maryland

    +$350— Florida State, Oregon

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a busy Thursday…….

    13) From ESPN.com: Los Angeles Angels fired their longtime visiting clubhouse manager after an internal investigation confirmed suspicions that he was providing ball-doctoring substances to opposing pitchers. Brian Harkins had been with the Angels for 30 years, was providing illegal sticky substances in the visiting clubhouse that aided pitchers’ abilities to grip the baseball.

Trevor Bauer recently told Real Sports that 70% of pitchers use some sort of substance — be it pine tar or Firm Grip or a homemade concoction — to enhance their grip, which could ultimately provide greater movement and velocity.

Baseball has had a very rough offseason; they need real games to start. Soon.

    12) Hal Mumme is a 67-year old football coach, the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Vipers in the XFL; 20 years ago, he was head coach at Kentucky. He is a tough guy.

Last weekend, Mumme was on the sidelines at the Houston-Dallas game when a RB ran out of bounds and knocked Mumme over- that happened in the second quarter. Mumme got up and coached the rest of the game. No big deal.

Turns out he broke his leg in the collision, so he stood there for more than half the game and called plays, with a freakin’ broken leg.

He’ll be coaching from the booth this week, when the Renegades play New York.

    11) Terence Ross is in his 8th year in the NBA, his 4th with the Orlando Magic; he scored 35 points in 34:11 in the Magic’s 116-113 loss to Miami Wednesday.

What makes this unusual is the rest of Ross’ line score:
Zero rebounds, zero assists, zero steals, zero blocks, one turnover, two fouls.

It is really, really odd for a guy to score 35 points with no rebounds, no steals.

Ross is averaging 14.6 ppg in 27.2 mpg; he’s taken 738 shots, has 69 assists.

    10) Utah State 75, New Mexico 70— Merrill scored 29 points to bail out the Aggies, who led by 13 early on, but then trailed 11 with 9:15 left. Utah State is barely on right side of the bubble, so this win was necessary. Winning tonight might be necessary, too.

    9) Washington 90, Arizona State 83— Huskies get first Pac-12 road win this season, hand ASU a horrific home loss that could haunt them on Selection Sunday. Sun Devils lost their last three games, after a 7-game win streak.

    8) San Diego State 73, Air Force 60— Aztecs are 29-1, but they’ve trailed at halftime in their last four games; they caught a break though, when UNLV got upset, so they won’t have to play the host team in Friday’s semifinal, they play Boise State instead.

    7) Upsets:
    — Wyoming (+10) 74, Nevada 71
    — Lipscomb (+8) 73, North Florida 71
    — Washington (+6) 90, Arizona State 83
    — Alcorn State (+5.5) 80, Prairie View 71
    — Bucknell (+5) 64, American 59
    — UMKC (+3.5) 61, Utah Valley 59

    6) Four of five teams in NL Central have season win totals of 82.5 or more wins, which is bad news for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the fifth team in the division, whose over/under is 69.5.

    5) Pirates are projected to have the lowest Opening Day payroll in baseball, roughly $57M; the players union has filed grievances against the Pirates the last two years for not spending their revenue sharing money to increase their payroll. Go figure.

    4) Late night TV is great this month, with replays of college hoop games and spring training games all night, every night. Baseball should show late night replays all season long.

    3) Tim Duncan coached the San Antonio Spurs Tuesday, in their 104-103 win over Charlotte, subbing for an absent Gregg Popovich.

    2) Chicago White Sox signed their young star, 2B Yoan Moncada, to a 5-year. $70M deal.

    1) Coronavirus is a huge problem for the cruise ship industry; in mid-January, Royal Caribbean stock was $136/share; at the close of business Thursday, it was $65.78/share. Oy.

ST. LOUIS BLUES AT NEW JERSEY DEVILS
              DEVIL OF A TIME SCORING

The New Jersey Devils’ offense has dried up, having only scored 10 goals in their last five games as well as having two or fewer goals in five of their last eight outings. It won’t get any easier this Friday when they face the defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues.

The Blues are allowing a league-low 1.9 goals against over their last 10 games and have surrendered just three goals in their last three road games - all victories. We like the Blues to throttle the Devils’ offense and will be taking the Devils’ team total Under 2.5 goals as St. Louis sits in the Top-4 in save percentage, scoring chance save percentage, and expected goals against over the last 10 games.

              WASHINGTON CAPITALS AT PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
              RUBBER MATCH MATINEE

Two of the best teams in the Metro Division will have their rubber match on Saturday afternoon as the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Washington Capitals at 1 p.m. ET. The previous two matches were both played in February with each team earning two points and a total of 15 goals being scored. Leading up to the game, the Over has hit in three straight Pittsburgh home games as the Pens haven’t had a divisional game at home since January 31.

The Capitals are usually a better Over team at home but with their current goaltending (.896 save percentage over the last 10 games), putting your magic beans on any Washington Over is a profitable bet. The Over has cashed in five of Washington’s last seven games and seven of its last eight divisional matchups. Take the Over 6.5 goals on Saturday afternoon.

              MONTREAL CANADIENS AT FLORIDA PANTHERS
              FLOODING FLORIDA WITH GOALS

The Montreal Canadiens have played the Florida Panthers three times this year and Les Habitants have put up some staggering offensive numbers. The Canadiens are averaging 4.66 goals per game and have scored at least four goals in all three contests against the Panthers - two wins and a loss. Florida has done nothing to give Montreal backers any doubts, as the playoff-sliding Panthers are allowing 4.13 goals against per game at home since February 6 - a span of nine games.

Montreal is also sitting fifth overall in goals per game since February 16 at 3.57, despite a Bottom-10 powerplay unit. Montreal goalie Carey Price has also shone in the Saturday spotlight, going 10-5-2 which is great considering Price has a record of 27-23-6 on the year. We are looking for a good price on the Montreal team total Over 2.5 but have confidence in the Montreal moneyline or the team total Over 3.5.

LAS VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS AT CALGARY FLAMES
              SCHEDULE SPOT SUNDAY

Sunday brings us a great schedule spot to fade the traveling Vegas Golden Knights on the frontend of a back-to-back. Vegas plays in Winnipeg on Friday, visits the Calgary Flames on Sunday, and then rip North to Edmonton on Monday before two full days off ahead of their game in Minnesota. Calgary could offer great value against a team just in town for a short night and possibly thinking about the Oilers, who are just two points back for the top spot in the Pacific as of Friday.

The home team has won each of the last nine matchups with Calgary outscoring Vegas 20-6 in the last three games in Alberta. In fact, the home team is a cool 8-1 ATS in those nine matches. We’re riding the home team who kicked off its five-game homestand with a gutsy 3-2 win against the Blue Jackets on Wednesday after trailing 2-0 with under 10 minutes in the third. We like the Flames on the moneyline.

GOALIE PROFILE: MARTIN JONES, SAN JOSE SHARKS

After posting a 3.70 GAA with an .874 save percentage across 11 starts in January and February (1-10 SU), “Rolling Jones” has risen from the California ashes. A winner in three of his last four starts, Jones has allowed just seven goals in his last four games, helping the Sharks win as +140 and +150 underdogs this month. It’s been a rough season for the Sharks, but this team is still undervalued ahead of its Saturday game against the Senators and Sunday's match against the Avalanche.

Jones is 7-3 SU on Saturday nights with a sub-2.00 goals against on the year. If he does start the Saturday slot, then we will look to play the Under 2.5 on the Ottawa Senators’ team total. If Jones starts Sunday, we will look to take the Under 6 on the full-game total.

INJURY UPDATE: JOHNNY BOYCHUK D, NEW YORK ISLANDERS

The slumping New York Islanders, who are on the playoff bubble, will be without defenseman Johnny Boychuk for an undisclosed amount of time after the rearguard needed 90 stitches to close up a cut on his eyelid from a skate on Tuesday night. It’s not an easy image to erase from your mind.

The team’s struggles are mainly on offense, as it’s scoring the second-lowest amount of goals per game in its last 10, but its 3.17 goals against per game isn’t an impressive number at all either. Losing Boychuk for any length of time is a massive loss for a team looking for consistency. We’ll be staying away from the Islanders on Overs and moneylines, but will have no problem betting against them.

              HAT TRICK TRENDS

              • Fenwick is a hockey metric that measures total unblocked shot attempts at even strength. This is a better measure of a team's total shots at the net than the regular shots stat which doesn’t include shots that narrowly miss the net or hit the post. Over the last five games, the Predators, Knights, Canucks, Penguins and Jets lead the league in Fenwick For while the Blackhawks, Avalanche, Devils, Rangers and Senators lead the league in Fenwick Against.

              • The Philadelphia Flyers are 8-2 O/U on first-period totals across their last 10 games. Other teams who are hitting first-period Overs at 80 percent or better in the last 10 are the Blue Jackets, Senators, Wild, Sabres Canucks and Golden Knights.

              • Looking to play an Over but need a little push? The Canucks, Oilers, Kings and Flyers are scoring on the powerplay at better than 33 percent since February 20. Conversely, The Senators, Blue Jackets and Rangers are all allowing shorthanded goals at a rate higher than 33 percent since the same date.
