    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

    Pac-12 basketball standings:

    4-1— USC, Stanford

    4-2— Oregon

    3-2— Arizona, Colorado

    3-3— Washington State

    2-3— Arizona State, California, UCLA

    2-4— Oregon State, Washington

    1-4— Utah

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

    13) Chiefs 35, Titans 24:
    — Mahomes’ 27-yard TD run with 0:11 left in first half is one of the great runs in playoff history.
    — Tennessee’s first three drives: 32 plays, 191 yards, 14 first downs, 17 points.
    — Tennessee for rest of game: 27 plays, 111 yards, 6 first downs, 7 points.

    12) 49ers 37, Packers 20— Ugly, one-sided game; 49ers ran ball for 285 yards, led 27-0 at the half. Garoppolo threw only eight passes the whole game (6-8/77 yards).

    11) They said on ESPN2 Friday night that last year, 29.1% of returning college basketball players wound up transferring- thats a staggering number, one that goes a long way to explain why the quality of play in college hoop is way down. Total lack of continuity, lot of kids sitting out.

    10) Three of the four NFL teams who played Sunday didn’t make the playoffs last year.

    9) Clemson’s star RB Travis Etienne surprisingly passed on entering the 2020 NFL Draft to return for senior year with the Tigers- he must like college. Lot of pundits had him listed as the best running back in this year’s draft.

    8) Before Sunday, last time the Chiefs beat Tennessee was six years ago; Alex Smith was Kansas City’s QB, while Ryan Fitzpatrick.started for the Titans.

    7) Dayton 78, Saint Louis 76 OT— Had great fun watching this game Friday night, an excellent game with two good teams. Kid on Dayton drained a 3 with less than a second left- the Flyers will be a very, very popular (too popular??) sleeper team in March.

Dayton led for only 5:18 of this 45:00 game.

    6) Jason Garrett signed on to become the Giants’ OC, which adds intrigue to next year’s Dallas-Giant games.

    5) There is language in Kyler Murray’s rookie contract with the Arizona Cardinals that forbids him from taking part in any baseball-related activities, but he is talking like he still wants to try it someday. Oy.

    4) Omar Vizquel played in the major leagues for 24 years, for six different teams; he was a good fielder, made it to three All-Star Games, but had a career .688 OPS. Not once in all the times I saw Vizquel play did I think, “Hey, this guy could be in the Hall of Fame someday.”

But now Vizquel is on some writers’ ballots for the Hall of Fame. Amazing.

    3) Davidson doesn’t have a graduate school, so they can’t poach grad transfers the way a lot of other D-I basketball programs do.

    2) Philip Rivers and his family are moving to Florida; Tom Brady is moving away from Boston, will listen to other teams in the free agent market. NFL could look an awful lot different when next season starts.

    1) Opening line on the Super Bowl: Chiefs, -1 (53)

Bonus List of 13: College knowledge on a winter day

    13) Big 14:
    — Michigan State leads at 6-1; surprising Illinois is 5-2
    — Ohio State lost five of its last six games.
    — Home favorites of 5 or less points are 7-3-1 ATS

    12) Big X:
    — Looks like four teams in NCAAs, with Oklahoma off the bubble a little.
    — In five years at Texas, Shaka Smart is 33-40 in conference games.
    — Home favorites of 4+ points are 13-3 ATS

    11) Big East:
    — Seton Hall leads at 6-0, Villanova is 4-1
    — In his third year at Georgetown, Patrick Ewing is 16-26 in conference games.
    — Home favorites of more than 5 points are 5-2 ATS

    10) ACC:
    — Louisville, Florida State are both 6-1; Duke is 5-2.
    — North Carolina lost 8 of last 9 games, is 1-5 in ACC.
    — Single digit home favorites are 7-16 ATS.

    9) SEC:
    — LSU is 5-0…..Kentucky/Florida are both 4-1
    — Vanderbilt fired Bryce Drew LY after his PG got hurt and the team fell apart; this year. Vandy’s best player is hurt, the Commodores are 0-4 in SEC. Is the coach’s job safe?
    — Favorites of 3 or fewer points are 4-6 ATS. Road favorites are 5-6.

    8) Pac-12:
    — Stanford, USC are both 4-1; Oregon is 4-2.
    — Washington lost three of four games since its PG became ineligible.
    — Home favorites of 7 or fewer points are 8-2 ATS

    7) The last six years, Stetson went 22-68 in Atlantic Sun games; this year, under 1st-year coach Donnie Jones, the Hatters are 3-2 in A-Sun- they’ve won their last four road games, including a win at South Carolina. Much improved team.

    6) American:
    — Houston/Tulsa are 4-1; Memphis is 3-1, three teams are 3-2.
    — UCF was #21 experience team LY, went 24-9; this year, they’re 11-7, 2-4 in AAC
    — Favorites of 8+ points are 2-5 ATS; road favorites are 4-7 ATS.

    5) Atlantic 14:
    — Dayton/Duquesne are both 5-0; could Flyers be an at-large team?
    — Why did St Joe’s fire Phil Martelli? They’re 4-14, 0-5 in conference.
    — Road favorites are 7-4 ATS.

    4) WCC:
    — Gonzaga is 6-0; five of the other nine teams are 3-2.
    — A 4-OT loss at Pacific will make Saint Mary’s nervous on Selection Sunday.
    — Favorites of 7 or fewer points are 9-3 ATS.

    3) Mountain West:
    — San Diego State is last unbeaten team in the country.
    — Utah State lost four of last five games after a 13-2 start; New Mexico lost a couple players for off-court reasons; they stopped trying at the end of the UNLV game Saturday.
    — Road favorites of less than 7 points are 6-1-1 ATS.

    2) Missouri Valley:
    — Northern Iowa is 5-1, Loyola is 4-1, Bradley 4-2.
    — Evansville upset Kentucky Nov 12, then they lost their coach for off-court reasons; now they’re 0-6 in Valley games.
    — Home favorites are 14-6 ATS this season.

    1) Mid-American:
    — Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green are all 4-1 in this one-bid league.
    — Eastern Michigan is 0-5 in MAC, turning ball over 22.4% of time, making 22.9% of 3’s.
    — Home favorites of 6+ points are 1-9-1 ATS.

        PANTHERS POWERED BY POWERPLAY

The Florida Panthers have ripped off four straight wins heading into Monday’s road game against the Minnesota Wild. Florida has been scoring with ease of late as it leads the league in goals per game (4.2) over its last 10 games and its best chance of beating the Wild will be with their special teams.

Florida is scoring at a clip of 30 percent on the powerplay in the new year and will get to work against a Minnesota penalty kill that sits second-last with a 65-percent success rate. Minnesota is also struggling to find consistency between the pipes as Alex Stalock (2.83 GAA .902 SV%) and Devan Dubnyk (3.35 GAA .892 SV%) are both getting starts as it tries to find a clear No. 1.

We are starting the week off by taking the road dog Panthers on the moneyline.

        LIVING OUT OF A SUITCASE

Since changing their coach after losing four straight, the Vegas Golden Knights have collected three points in the two games with Peter DeBoer behind the bench. The Knights travel to Boston to take on the Bruins who are coming off two hard-fought games versus the Pittsburgh Penguins with the most recent contest seeing the B’s blow a 3-0 lead in a 4-3 loss. Both teams will enter their five-day break ahead of the All-Star weekend and will want to get a win before the long layover.

Vegas has been on the road for the last seven days and will be underdogs against a Bruins team that has collected nine out of a possible 12 points in its last six home games and is 9-3-3 against Western Conference opponents. Boston also knocked off the Knights 4-3 in Vegas back in October.

We like the home team here against a well-traveled team with a break on the horizon. Take the Bruins on the moneyline.

        OVER BEFORE THE BREAK

Both the Chicago Blackhawks and Florida Panthers will play their last game before the break Tuesday in the Windy City. Chicago has scored 17 goals in its last four games are 3-2 O/U in its last five and 4-1 O/U in its last five at home.

Florida has been an Over machine this year going 28-16-3 and is 4-1 O/U over the last five games. They will also be on the backend of a back-to-back and could be starting backup goalie Sam Montembeault who has allowed five goals in three of his last five games.

We are taking the Over 6 for this Tuesday evening tilt.

        BLUE JACKETS BANDWAGON

The Columbus betting bandwagon is filling up and with good reason. The Blue Jackets are 8-2 SU over their last 10 and have won as an underdog six times during that stretch. A lot of the team’s success has to do with the play of goalie Elvis Merzlikins.

The King is 8-2 SU since taking over the starting duties and the Latvian has picked up three shutouts along the way. Merzlikins has been padding Under backers’ pockets as the Under has hit in eight of his last 10 starts, including his last five.

The Jets travel to Columbus on Wednesday before the league heads to the All-Star break. Winnipeg is 9-10-1 versus the East this year and 4-6 SU in its last 10 road games. We like the Jackets to continue their winning ways and also love the Under.

GOALIE PROFILE: PHILIPP GRUBAUER, COLORADO AVALANCHE

The Avs No. 1 goalie seems to have gotten his mojo back as his January has been his best month statistically — 2.50 goals against and .910 save percentage. After a winless stretch that spanned six games, Grubauer has wins in four of his last six. Even with the good performances though, the Avs and Grubauer are hitting the Overs more times than not.

The Over has hit in five of his seven starts in January with an average combined goals of 7.8. On Monday afternoon, Colorado hosts the Detroit Red Wings who are 3-3 O/U in their six and are averaging just 1.8 goals for and 3.4 goals against in their last 10.

INJURY UPDATE: D DOUGIE HAMILTON, CAROLINA HURRICANES

The Carolina Hurricanes will be without their best defenseman for an extended amount of time as the team’s leader in ice time suffered a broken leg. Hamilton was having a Norris Trophy-type season as he was third in points and second in assists on the team. The loss is a big hit to the Canes’ powerplay that Hamilton quarterbacked and led in ice time.

Carolina has the worst powerplay since January 1, scoring just 8.3 percent so the absence of Hamilton could make a bad situation even worse. Without Hamilton, they have scored just five goals in three games while also hitting the Under in six straight. Look for the Canes to continue to struggle on offense and look to hit the Under on Tuesday when Carolina hosts the Jets.

        HAT TRICK TRENDS

        • The Columbus Blue Jackets own the best Under record at home with a 7-19 O/U record. They have also hit the Under in seven straight games. The BJs will finish up the games before the break on Wednesday as they host the Winnipeg Jets. On the year, the Jets are 12-12 O/U on the road.

        • Looking to play some back-to-back trends? Only two teams will play B2B this week. The Florida Panthers play on Monday and Tuesday and the Winnipeg Jets play on Tuesday and Wednesday. Florida is 4-5 SU and 4-5 O/U in the frontend of B2Bs this year and 6-3 SU and 4-5 O/U in the backend. The Jets are 4-1 SU and 2-3 O/U on the frontend of their B2Bs and 2-3 SU and 4-1 O/U in the backend.

        • The Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators have scored the most first-period goals this month while the Vegas Golden Knights and Philadelphia Flyers have allowed the most first-period goals. Florida is 5-2-1 SU in the first frame since January 1 and the Knights are 2-5-1 SU in first-period moneylines this month.
