    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Teams that rely the least on 3-point shots:

    353) Cleveland State 16% of their points on 3’s

    T349) Kentucky 20%

    348) Indiana 20.1%

    346) Illinois 20.2%

    345) Sacramento State 20.8%

    344) Southern Miss 20.9%

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

    13) Pelicans 138, Jazz 132 OT— Utah’s 10-game win streak ends in New Orleans, where the Jazz franchise started out a long time ago. Brandon Ingram scored 49 points for the Pelicans.

    12) Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry is first cousins with the great David Thompson, who led NC State to the national basketball title in 1974.

    11) Mets gave manager Carlos Beltran the boot, before he ever managed a game in New York. Never knew that banging on garbage cans could be such an expensive activity.

    10) Tim Hudson pitched in the major leagues for 17 years, winning 222 games; now he is going back to his alma mater Auburn to be the Tigers’ pitching coach.

Guys like Hudson made a fortune playing ball (Hudson made $121M+), but now they need something that gets them out of bed every day. Coaching college kids should be fun.

    9) Western Kentucky 71, Old Dominion 69— Hilltoppers trailed by 12 with 3:30 left but rallied for the unlikely win; WKU outscored the Monarchs 24-11 on foul line.

    8) Colorado 68, Arizona State 61— Solid road win for the 14-3 Buffaloes; this was Colorado’s first win in last seven visits to Tempe.

    7) Washington State replaced Mike Leach as football coach with Hawai’i coach Nick Rolovich, who went 28-27 in four years coaching the Rainbow Warriors.

    6) College basketball upsets:
    — High Point (+13.5) 68, NC-Asheville 66
    — Washington State (+9.5) 72, Oregon 61
    — Northern Arizona (+8.5) 75, Southern Utah 72
    — Charleston Southern (+7.5) 77, Campbell 62
    — Charlotte (+6) 77, Marshall 75
    — Stetson (+6) 54, North Alabama 49
    — Detroit (+6) 90, Milwaukee 84

    5) Laurent Hurtubise, who was born with one arm, got a hole-in-one on the 151-yard par-3 4th hole at the pro-am event at the PGA West Stadium Course in La Quinta, CA. Pretty cool.

    4) Win a bar bet: Comedian Bob Hope hosted the Academy Awards 16 times, more than anyone else has. Hope also owned a small part of the Cleveland Indians.

    3) If Kellen Moore is still going to call plays for the Cowboys, why did they fire Jason Garrett?

    2) Baylor Bears hired former LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda as their new head coach, so in three days, LSU has already lost its DC and QB coach, not to mention Joe Burrow and seven undergraduates to the NFL.

In other words, LSU’s coaches aren’t getting to enjoy the national title yet; they’re working their butts off recruiting for the next three weeks.

    1) I-AA Missouri State hired Bobby Petrino as its football coach this week; Petrino is a very good coach, but some off-field decisions have sabotaged his career.

He is 160-65 as a college coach, but while at Arkansas he wrecked his motorcycle while his girlfriend was riding it with him, which didn’t sit well in the conservative south, or with his wife.

He was 3-10 coaching the Atlanta Falcons, and quit before this first year there was over, so he can’t go back to the NFL, but he was also Lamar Jackson’s college coach, which carries some weight.

          GOOD GETTING BETTER

The worst team in the league is without its No. 1 goalie until after the All-Star break and the fourth-best team in the league has its captain back after missing over two months.

The Detroit Red Wings have conceded 13 goals in the two games without goalie Jonathan Bernier and were beaten 5-1 and 8-2 to teams which rank 16th and 20th in goals per game.

The Pittsburgh Penguins travel to Detroit on Friday having won eight of their last 10 games and just welcomed back Sidney Crosby, who notched one goal and three assists in his first game back. Crosby’s return boosts an offense that is scoring over four goals a game in its last 10 outings which sits second best in the league.

We’re taking the Penguins on the puckline (-1.5) as the Red Wings are 0-9 ATS in their last nine home loses and are in big trouble with goalie Jimmy Howard between the pipes after allowing 21 goals in his last five starts.

          TRIED AND TRUE

No team in the league has scored fewer goals per game since January 1 than the Montreal Canadiens.

The Habs are averaging 1.88 goals in 2020 thanks to having the worst powerplay since the calendar flipped. Defensively, they’ve played well as they sit sixth in goals against at 2.63 in that same span and have the third-best penalty kill. Put all this together and you get a Montreal team that is 1-7-1 Over/Under in its last nine showings.

The Canadiens will host the struggling Vegas Golden Knights (who fired their head coach earlier this week), who are 2-4 SU in their last six and are 10-11-1 O/U on the road this year. We have no problem dropping dollars on the unexciting Under which should be at a total of six, which would be much preferred over 5.5.

          CANADA’S BEST HOME TEAM

The Vancouver Canucks finally returned home on Thursday after a five-game eight-day East Coast road trip and beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-1, extending their home winning streak to seven games.

Vancouver owns the West’s third-best home record and has won 10 of its last 12 at Rogers Arena. The Canucks offense has put up 3.7 goals at home per game but are 10-10-1 O/U at home, meaning they’re getting some great support on the backend.

On Saturday, the Canucks welcome the San Jose Sharks, who have won just two of their last 10 road games and are scoring just two goals per contest over that stretch. The Sharks will also be without their leading scorer Logan Couture and are having trouble finding consistent goaltending as the team bounces back and forth between Martin Jones and Aaron Dell. We like the Canucks' moneyline for this Saturday night play.

          BACK-TO-BACK BEASTS

The Chicago Blackhawks will play the backend of a back-to-back at home Sunday versus the Winnipeg Jets, who last played on Friday. The second of back-to-back games usually offers terrible odds on the rested team, but we won’t be looking to take the Jets.

Chicago is 8-1 SU in the second game of a back-to-back this year and 4-0 SU when that game is at home. In those nine games, the Blackhawks have won as underdogs six times and beat the Jets in Winnipeg on December 19.

Chicago is also heading into the weekend riding a three-game winning streak and should return the services of Top-6 forward and No. 4 in scoring Dylan Strome. We’re grabbing the Blackhawks on the moneyline.

GOALIE PROFILE: BRIAN ELLIOTT, PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

The Philadelphia Flyers lost starting goalie Carter Hart to an abdominal strain for three weeks and will now have to roll with Brian Elliott. The veteran goalie has collected 10 wins this year with a 3.14 goals against average and a sub-.900 save percentage.

The Over is 5-1 in the goalie’s last six starts with his team going 3-3 SU. Elliott should face the L.A. Kings on Saturday - a team he saw earlier this year in a brief start as he made just 11 saves on 15 shots before being replaced.

We like the road team as an underdog after the Flyers struggled against Western Conference opponents this year, going 7-11-2.

INJURY UPDATE: D MORGAN REILLY, TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

The Toronto Maple Leafs have lost star defenseman Morgan Reilly for up to eight weeks with a fractured foot. This puts two of the team’s top-4 blueliners on the shelf, meaning there are a lot of minutes up for grabs for the Leafs’ young call-ups.

In the first game without Reilly, the Leafs cruised to a 7-4 victory but were anything but tough defensively down the stretch allowing three third-period goals.

With goalie Frederick Andersen not on his game, the new defensive talent could struggle with their inexperience turning games into shootouts. Toronto hosts the Blackhawks on Saturday in a game we will be wagering on the Over 6.5.

          HAT TRICK TRENDS

          • We have yet to suggest putting your money on a tie, but if we were it would most likely be a game that Ottawa Senators goalie Marcus Hogberg is playing. The Sens and Hogberg have gone to overtime in six of his eight starts this year, including his three most previous starts. Ottawa is 1-5 SU in each of those six overtime games. The Sens are at home to Calgary Flames on Saturday.

          • The home dogs were barking over the last seven days, winning 53 percent of the games outright and posting a 15-3 ATS versus the puckline. Over the last month home puckline dogs are 44-24 ATS and although there isn’t much value in taking the +1.5 puckline (due to the large juice attached to that spread), parlaying a couple can net betters values of +125 or better.

          • The New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks are all 9-1 Over/Under in their last 10 first-period totals of 1.5. Over bettors need to be careful of the Columbus Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks as both teams have hit the Over just twice in each of their last 10 first periods.
