    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Odds to win the Super Bowl:

    2-1— Baltimore

    3-1— Kansas City, San Francisco

    8-1— Green Bay

    15-1— Seattle

    18-1— Minnesota

    35-1— Tennessee

    40-1— Houston

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

    13) Mississippi State hired Mike Leach as its new football coach; with Lane Kiffin signing on at Ole Miss, the SEC will be more interesting than normal next year, and thats saying something.

Big week for Miss State football; Bulldog alum Joe Judge was the surprise choice to be the new coach of the New Jersey Giants- he was introduced to the NY-NJ media Thursday.

    12) 76ers’ star Joel Embiid will have surgery Friday morning to fix a torn radial collateral ligament in the ring finger of his left hand; he is expected to miss at least two weeks.

    11) Oregon 74, Arizona 73 OT— Outstanding, March-like game; Ducks trailed by 11 in the first half, but rallied for win behind Pritchard, who had 18 points, six assists, and played the whole 45:00. Arizona’s Max Hazzard bolted from Cal-Irvine to Tucson, but he played only 8:00 in this game. Sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side.

    10) Michigan 84, Purdue 78, 2OT— Zavier Simpson scored 22 points, had nine assists; he was on floor for 49 of the 50:00, going 8-8 inside arc. Purdue had 15 offensive rebounds.

Williams had 36 points, 20 rebounds, first time a Purdue player did that since 1971.

    9) Wichita State 76, Memphis 67— Shockers were +8 (18-10) in turnovers, in foul-filled game (both teams took 30+ FT’s). Wichita never trailed in this game, despite shooting only 32.8% from the floor.

    8) Saint Mary’s 87, BYU 84 OT— BYU’s star big man Childs got hurt in practice, missed this game; senior G Haws scored 29 in a losing cause here.

Saint Mary’s lost a 4-OT game Saturday, then played another OT game here. If the WCC does not get three NCAA bids, the BYU-Saint Mary’s games become a lot bigger.

    7) College basketball upsets:
    — Tex-San Antonio (+6.5) 89, Louisiana Tech 73
    — Montana (+6) 90, Eastern Washington 63
    — Hofstra (+4) 74, Northeastern 72
    — Eastern Kentucky (+4) 77, Eastern Illinois 74
    — Arizona State (+4) 82, Oregon State 76

    6) Stanford 61, Washington 55— Cardinal ends game on 14-1 run; Washington lost its poise down stretch. Why did they lose their poise?

Huskies’ PG Quade Green is academically ineligible; freshman G Marcus Tsohonis will be pressed into action as a backup. Washington had hoped to redshirt Tsohonis this season. Losing your point guard at midseason is like losing your QB; not good.

Green was scoring 11.6 ppg, giving out 5.3 assists/game while making 44.7% of his 3’s.

    5) Northern Colorado 65, Weber State 64— Bears get their first-ever win in 14 visits to Ogden; Kai Edwards scored a basket with 0:03.5 left for the win.

    4) Siena 61, St Peter’s 58— Peacocks were only 4-22 on arc, were outscored 14-4 on foul line.

    3) The last time that a Western Conference team made the NBA playoffs with a losing record was 1996-97, when the 36-46 LA Clippers got in, but that streak could end this year; right now, the 16-20 San Antonio Spurs are holding down the #8 spot in the west.

    2) St Louis Cardinals traded OF’s Jose Martinez and Randy Arozarena to Tampa Bay for lefty pitching prospect Matt Liberatore and a Class A catching prospect.

    1) Cavaliers 115, Pistons 112 OT— John Beilein really needed this week, after a bad week for him and his team, off the floor. Cleveland is 11-27; losing is stressful. Beilein was a great college coach; you wonder if he is regretting his move to the more player-friendly NBA.

          THE FUN IS DONE

The Arizona Coyotes offense was hot, having scored 18 goals in four games before getting blanked Thursday night versus the Lightning, 4-0. A big reason for their recent offensive production is an unsustainable shooting percentage on scoring chances at 25 percent which indicates that their scoring may be in for a big regression.

Arizona plays the back end of a back-to-back on Friday and have to travel to Carolina to take on the Hurricanes who have been resting since Tuesday. The Coyotes are 2-6 SU on the second game of a back-to-back this year (5-3 O/U) and are in the middle of stretch that will see them play seven games in 12 days.

With the schedule and unsustainable stats, we are riding the Hurricanes on the 3-way Money Line (win in regulation or -0.5), even with the juice.

          MATINEE SATURDAY

Looking for some action on Saturday afternoon? Take a look at the Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres game at 1 p.m ET. Vancouver played in Tampa Bay on Tuesday, Florida on Thursday and will travel to Buffalo on Saturday, before stops in Minnesota on Sunday and Winnipeg on Tuesday. That’s as big as an East Coast road trip gets.

Vancouver had won seven straight games but have now lost both games to start off its road trip by a combined score of 10-4. Buffalo has a great 9-4-3 record against Westeren opponents and is no stranger to the Saturday afternoon game as Buffalo goalie Linus Ullmark is 3-0-1 in afternoon games this year. Jump on the Sabres moneyline for this siesta.

          UNDER THE WEATHER

Saturday will give us this year’s third installment of the Senators and Canadiens as Montreal takes its eight-game losing streak to Ottawa who is riding a five-game losing streak (as of Friday morning) of their own. Both team’s split an overtime decision early this year with the Under hitting on both. The Under might be the right play for this Hockey Night in Canada match (no Leafs Saturday) as both offenses have struggled since the calendar turned to 2020.

Montreal sits in last since in goals per game at 1.8 since January 1, while Ottawa is not doing much better scoring 2.3 goals per game which is the 6th-lowest mark. Both team’s have combined for just 12 even strength goals in 10 games while both their power plays are a combined 2-for-25 (eight percent).

We hate playing Unders but think there is some value here as both Ottawa and Montreal’s opponents of late have been scoring. Because of this, we might get a total of 6, which would be much better than 5.5. Take the Under 6 as neither team has seen a total of 5.5 more than three times all year.

          THE WEEK IS OVER

The Toronto Maple Leafs took a rare Saturday off and will instead visit the Florida Panthers on Sunday night. As of Friday, Florida and Toronto are a combined 11-7 O/U in their last 10 games as the Leafs are averaging 6.6 combined goals since the beginning of the month while the Panthers sit at 6.2.

At home this year, the Panthers are 14-6-2 O/U which is the second-highest mark in the league. The Leafs counter with the third-best Over record on the road at 14-9.

Leafs goalie Fredrick Andersen has yet to play a Sunday game this year as his team is accustomed to playing on Saturday nights. Hopefully the unfamiliar territory will take the Leafs’ backstop off his game because we are playing the Over 6.5 on Sunday night.

GOALIE PROFILE: BRADEN HOLTBY, WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Capitals’ No. 1 goalie had to be reminded of his lead on the starting gig earlier this week as backup Ilya Samsonav has been stealing starts and playing better than the three-time 40-game winner.

Holtby has allowed three or more goals in five straight starts, all of which have hit the Over. We expect Holtby to get the start on Saturday against the New Jersey Devils as the Caps’ goalie is 17-3 lifetime against the Devils with a sub-2.00 goals against, but those numbers are close to meaningless as long as Holtby can’t stop teams from putting up big numbers.

The Devils will be huge road underdogs, but they have earned more points in the new year than Washington, making them a sneaky play on the moneyline.

INJURY UPDATE: F LOGAN COUTURE, SAN JOSE SHARKS

Just when the Sharks thought they were turning a corner to their poor 2019-20 season, they will be without the services of their leading scorer in Logan Couture for possibly the next six weeks with a fractured ankle. The Sharks are scoring just 2.64 goals per game on the season which is good for sixth-last.

Their power play has struggled this year too as it is scoring at the seventh-lowest rate over the year and the second-lowest since November. The Sharks host the low-scoring Dallas Stars on Saturday and we don’t expect the Sharks to roll without their best scorer. We are taking the Under 5.5, but hoping it will open at 6.

          HAT TRICK TRENDS

          • Looking for a hot Over team. The New York Rangers are 11-1-2 O/U in their last 14 heading into the weekend. The team is currently rostering three healthy goalies as the Rangers try to get their young talent some reps. The Rangers face the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.
          • Like betting live odds? Look no further than the Dallas Stars heading into a third period when trailing. In their 17 games when trailing after two, the Stars have managed seven wins which is the most in the league. Third-period moneylines on the trailing team offer big odds.
          • The New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins have been destroying the Overs on first-period totals over their last 10. The Rags and Pens are each 9-1 O/U in their last 10 which is a mark that hasn’t been reached much this season at all. The Yang to their Ying are the Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks who are just 2-8 O/U in 1P totals in their last 10.
