    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six of the hardest schedules in country so far:

    13) North Carolina

    12) Michigan

    10) Tex-Arlington

    8) Georgia Tech

    5) Southern Miss

    2) Kansas

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday……

    13) Vikings 26, Saints 20 OT— New Orleans gets bounced from playoffs on last play of game for third year in row, second year in row at home.

Minnesota converted 10-18 on third down; Kirk Cousins gets his first career playoff win as the Vikings advance to San Francisco next weekend.

    12) Seahawks 17, Eagles 9— Seattle beat Philly twice this season, both by 17-9 scores; Philly scored one TD on 20 drives in the two games.

Carson Wentz got clocked in the head, was KO’d in first half; his durability has to be an issue going forward. Seattle plays the Packers at Lambeau Field Sunday night.

    11) Last time the Buffalo Bills won a playoff game was in 1995 over the Dolphins; that was Don Shula’s last game as an NFL coach. Coach Shula turned 90 years old Saturday.

    10) Speaking of the Bills, they said on TV Saturday that Buffalo didn’t throw a pass on 3rd-and-1 all season long, not even once.

    9) Best ACC regular season records the last seven seasons:
    Virginia: 92-19 (.828)
    Duke: 80-31 (.721)
    North Carolina: 80-31 (.721)

    8) Watching college basketball and there are two leagues (Big East, Big 14) where their TV guys are obviously coached up to say how great their league is and how there are no easy games.

In the Big 14, Nebraska/Northwestern stink this year; in the Big East, there are no easy games mostly because there aren’t any great teams in the league. Butler has probably been the best team in the league up to this point; no one is touting them for the Final Four.

    7) Sunday’s basketball upsets:
    — IUPUI (+11.5) 93, Green Bay 78
    — Oregon State (+8.5) 76, Colorado 68
    — Holy Cross (+4.5) 63, Navy 61
    — Bucknell (+4.5) 78, Lafayette 66
    — Fairfield (+4) 46, Canisius 42

    6) Duquesne’s basketball gym is being refurbished this season; the Dukes are playing home games at Robert Morris College, 17 miles away in Coraopolis.

    5) Nevada Wolf Pack football coach Jay Norvell played college football at Iowa; he was on the 1983 Hawkeyes’ team that had five assistant coaches who later became D-I head coaches; Bill Snyder, Dan McCarney, Barry Alvarez, Kirk Ferentz and Bob Stoops, one of the best coaching staffs in college history.

    4) There are currently eight tight ends in the NFL who went to college at either Princeton or Harvard, which is a little odd.

    3) Favorites covered three of four MAAC basketball games Sunday, after being 0-7 ATS up to this point in the season. Big Sky conference favorites are 3-10 ATS so far this season.

    2) A fan at the Texas-Baylor basketball game Saturday made a 54-foot putt from the backcourt into a hole on a little putting green under one of the baskets, which earned him $5,000. They said it was the first time any fan had holed a putt during the promotion, which they’ve been doing at Baylor home games for 16 years.

    1) Early betting lines for next week’s NFL games:
    — Vikings @ 49ers (-6.5, 45.5)
    — Titans @ Ravens (-9.5, 48)
    — Texans @ Chiefs (-9.5, 49)
    — Seahawks @ Packers (-3.5, 46)

          HABS SQUEEZING THE STICK

The start of the week has the Winnipeg Jets beginning a three-game road trip against the Montreal Canadiens who have struggled on offense recently. The Habs have managed just four goals over their last three games and have a shooting percentage of four percent. Montreal is 2-10 SU at home over its last 12 and are the East’s third-worst home team.

The Jets are 10-11 O/U on the road this year as goalie Connor Hellebuyck has stronger splits on the road, going 9-5 with a 2.65 GAA and .926 save percentage away from home. With Montreal losing its last five games, we are banking for the losing streak to continue and taking the road team as Winnipeg sits fourth in the West with 26 points in 21 road games to date. The Jets offer great value on the ML as underdogs.

          CROSS-CONFERENCE HEATERS

Tuesday will feature one of the East’s best teams in the Tampa Bay Lightning and the West’s top team over the last five games in the Vancouver Canucks. Tampa has reeled off seven-straight wins scoring 29 goals during that streak. The Canucks have been just as good, ripping off seven wins of their own and averaging 4.3 goals per game.

Over their last 10 games, the Bolts and Nucks are a combined 11-7-2 O/U as they both sit in the Top-8 in goals for and are allowing nearly three goals against, as well. We will be riding the Over 6.5 on Tuesday and hoping for more offensive fireworks.

          VALUE IN THE DOG

Looking for some value on a 12-game slate on Tuesday? The New Jersey Devils are almost always underdogs and will host the New York Islanders who have dropped back-to-back games and scored just one goal in those two.

A big reason for the Devils winning four of their last six is the goaltending of MacKenzie Blackwood. The Devils’ backstop has allowed two or fewer goals in seven of his last 11 games.

The Devils already beat the Islanders on January 2 as +180 underdogs. The Devils moneyline on Tuesday will fetch backers a plus-money play, one we think there is a lot of value to.

          PRIMETIME LAMP LIGHTING

Hump day brings us a three-pack of games, but our total-loving eyes are staring at the Washington-Philadelphia match. Heading into the week, the Caps have hit four-straight Overs, averaging a total of 8.25 combined goals for and against. No. 1 goalie Braden Holtby is in the midst of a rough patch, having allowed 21 goals in his last four starts.

The Flyers have tallied four-straight wins at home and scored four or more goals in each of those victories. That bodes well for the Philly offense as the Caps have given up three or more goals in all five of their most recent road games. The Capitals are 5-1 O/U in their last six road games while the Flyers are 4-2-1 O/U in their last seven home games.

Both teams have powerplays converting at 20 percent or better since the break, while their penalty killing units have been allowing goals at 30 percent or worse. This Wednesday tilt gives a great opportunity to sit back and enjoy some loose and exciting hockey on national TV. Take the Over 6.5.

GOALIE PROFILE: HENRIK LUNDQVIST, NEW YORK RANGERS

The No. 5 all-time winningest goalie has seen better days. Henrick Lungvists sits 24th (.910) in save percentage and 42nd in goals against (3.10) this year. Over the last two seasons, the future Hall-of-Fame goalie has seen his GAA push north of 3.00 for the first time in his career. The total has gone Over in four of his last six games as the New York Rangers have the most expected goals against since December 1.

The Rangers are 9-1-1 O/U in their last 11 games. On Tuesday the Rangers will host the Colorado Avalanche who are averaging nearly four goals a game over their last 10 games, the second-most in the Western Conference. Look to ride the Over trend on Tuesday and take the Over 6.5.

INJURY UPDATE: F CAM ATKINSON, COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

Cam Atkinson has been out since December 19 and all the Blue Jackets have done is go 5-3 SU and take 12 of a possible 16 points in his absence. The winger will likely be back in the lineup on Monday against the L.A. Kings.

Atkinson will resume his Top-8 role and help the team’s powerplay that scored at just 10 percent during his absence (3rd-worst). The winger’s return will boost an offense that has put up 11 goals in its last five games but still found ways to win with one of the league’s best defenses. Look to take the Jackets’ moneyline on the road Monday.

          HAT TRICK TRENDS

          • The Maple Leafs and Oilers both sit in the Top-6 in first-period goals since December 1. Edmonton has hit the first-period Over in eight of its last 10 while the Toronto has hit the 1P Over in six of its last 10. Take the 1P Over 1.5 when Edmonton visits Toronto Monday night.

          • Away favorites were up to their old tricks last week as they went 7-8 ATS for a winning week if you were backing them. That’s compared to just 30.6 percent of home favorites winning ATS over the last seven days. Teams winning on the puckline (-1.5) have won at roughly 36 percent all season, but away favorites are hitting at nearly 49 percent over the last month. Look for some road favorites on the puckline to cash in on this trend.

          • We hate Mondays as much as the next guy unless the next guy is an NHL head coach. Since December, the Over is 15-11-3 on Mondays as teams seem to be playing a little looser at the beginning of the week in the winter.
