    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Interesting college football games on this week’s card:

    — Florida State @ Wake Forest (-2)

    — NC State (-2.5) @ Boston College

    — Oregon (-3) @ Washington

    — Arizona @ USC (-9)

    — Florida (-5) @ South Carolina

    — Baylor @ Oklahoma State (-3.5)

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) Watching the Rams’ ugly performance in Sunday’s loss to San Francisco, it dawned on me that I should research how other teams have done the year after losing the Super Bowl.

From 2001-08, only one of eight Super Bowl losers made the playoffs again the next year, but from 2009-18, nine of ten teams did make the playoffs, even going 6-3 SU in their first playoff game that second season. Only one of those teams (NE 2018) got back to the Super Bowl.

We’ve talked a lot here about how competitive the NFL is, and lot of small things have to go in your favor for a team to have success; I’m guessing the schedule makers are also less forgiving to the conference champs. Success is fragile, that much we know.

    12) I’ll say this; enjoy success while you can. Detroit Lions won three NFL titles in the 50’s, but have never made it to a Super Bowl, and haven’t won a playoff game since 1991.

    11) If I was an NFL coach and my 3rd-string QB was making his first NFL start, I’d want my Hall of Fame QB (who is currently hurt) to go on that road trip, to help mentor the rookie QB.

But Ben Roethlisberger didn’t go to LA this weekend; coach Tomlin simply said “Injured players don’t make road trips”

    10) San Diego is the 8th-largest city in America; why did the Chargers leave there? It makes no sense to me; what happens if they don’t sell a decent amount of tickets in the new LA dome next year? Can they go back to San Diego?

Can’t be much fun for the Charger players, when fans at their “home” games are mostly rooting for the other team.

    9) Underdogs went 9-3 ATS Sunday; gambling is difficult.

    8) Jay Gruden said over the weekend that coaches without final say over his team’s roster have to manage different staff and roster dynamics; “That’s the hardest part of coaching in the National Football League, in my opinion.”

That from a guy who just got fired, so he would know.

    7) Back when I was in college 40 or so years ago, I got mononucleosis and was off the grid for 2-3 weeks; can’t remember how much weight I lost, but I do remember that I was 168 scrawny pounds when I went back to school, having probably lost around 20 pounds. Many moons ago, and if you know me, there was no problem regaining all that weight.

Was surprised to read that Sam Darnold only lost three or four pounds during his bout with mono. Protein shakes must do the trick; he played really well against Dallas Sunday.

    6) One thing the NFL need to fix is how over-officiated their games are; former refs are TV stars now, pass interference instant replay is a joke (they almost never overturn a PI call/non-call), there is a flag thrown on most every kick return. Stop throwing so many flags!!!!

One thing bugs me a lot; stop calling taunting penalties!!! Or if you call them, just throw a flag, call it on both sides as a warning for guys to STFU, and move on. Coaches will tell guys to shut up and the game can go on. No one pays to watch the officials.

When Carson Wentz blew his knee out two years ago, it happened on a drive that should’ve ended three plays earlier, but the ref called a taunting penalty on a DB after a failed third down play. Eagles would’ve kicked a FG had the taunting penalty not been called, and Wentz wouldn’t have gotten hurt.

    5) Quarterbacks and guys who run with/catch the ball get all the credit, but if your offensive line isn’t strong, your offense has no chance, especially if the QB isn’t mobile. When an OL struggles, people are quick to point fingers, but they’re reluctant to give credit in the good times.

    4) Couple of quick NFL trends:
    — Chiefs covered 11 of their last 13 AFC West road games.
    — Last 12 times Tennessee failed to cover consecutive games, they went 11-1 ATS in the third game.

    3) NFL TV ratings are up 6% so far this season.

    2) Philip Rivers’ career record against the spread:
    — As a favorite: 64-71-3
    — As an underdog or pick ‘em: 41-31-3

    1) Packers 23, Lions 22
    — Detroit got inside Packers’ 10-yard line on first three drives, scored 13 points.
    — Lions are 2-2-1 despite a +6 turnover ratio.
    — Loss ends Detroit’s 4-game series win streak.

    — Green Bay won despite a minus-3 turnover ratio (0-3).
    — Packers outgained Detroit 447-229, but scored only 13 points on four red zone drives.
    — Lions lost despite a 12-yard advantage in field position.

In the Crease - Week 3
      Joe Williams

      Streaky Teams

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak
Buffalo 5-0-1 past six games overall Anaheim Under 5-1 past six games
Carolina 5-1-0 past six games overall Arizona Under 4-0 past four games
Colorado 5-0-0 past five games overall Los Angeles Over 5-0 past five games
Edmonton 5-1-0 past six games overall Montreal Over 4-0-1 past five games
New Jersey 0-4-2 past six games overall Nashville Over 5-0 past five games

      West Coast Fair

The Carolina Hurricanes opened the season with a 5-0-0 record in their first five games for the first time in franchise history. They won their fifth game by a 5-2 score against the New York Islanders this past Friday, but fell 3-2 at home in the second end of a back-to-back against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Now, they'll head out on the road for an early-season west-coast swing.

If you ever wondered why it seems the Hurricanes are always on a lengthy road trip to begin the season, it's due to the North Carolina State Fair. PNC Arena and Carter-Finley Stadium, where N.C. State football plays, are right next to the state fairgrounds. The parking for the state fair uses the lots for Carter-Finley and PNC Arena, so the Hurricanes are on the road in the middle of October every season. They head to Los Angeles on Tuesday, San Jose on Wednesday and Anaheim on Friday before traveling to Columbus on Oct. 24 after six days off. Their next home game isn't until Oct. 26, a matinee battle against the Chicago Blackhawks.

      Looking Ahead

      Tuesday, Oct. 15

Tampa Bay at Montreal: The Lightning head to Bell Centre as slight road favories. They are ice-cold, going 0-5 over the past five as a road favorite, including a stunning loss at Ottawa over the weekend. The home team has come away with victories in four of the past five meetings in this series, with the 'under' cashing in four of the past five. That's a stark contrast to what's been happening for Montreal overall, as the 'over' is 4-0-1 in their five games overall, including 1-0-1 in two home outings. In fact, the Canadiens are averaging 4.3 goals per game while yielding 4.3 goals per outing.

Arizona at Winnipeg: The Coyotes and Jets meet in Winnipeg. The 'under' has connected in all four games for Arizona so far, as they have scratched out seven goals while allowing a total of seven. Four of the goals scored came in their win against Vegas on Oct. 10, so it's been mostly a power outage for the Coyotes on offense. In their two road games the Coyotes are 0-1-1, losing at Anaheim on Oct. 3 and Colorado on Oct. 12. The Jets started out on the road, splitting four games in the New York City area, and one game at Pittsburgh. They are coming off a 7-2 beatdown at the hands of the Penguins, as G Laurent Brossoit took one for the team. G Connor Hellebuyck will be in between the pipes against the 'Yotes.

Philadelphia at Calgary: The Flyers are on the second of a their three-game western Canada swing after falling 3-2 in Vancouver in a shootout on Saturday. The Flames have yet to hit their stride offensively, scoring three or fewer goals in all six games so far, while coughing up three or more goals in four of their six affairs. They're back home for the first time since Oct. 8, as they look to treat the home fans to a better result than the 4-3 overtime loss they saw against Los Angeles in the Saddledome last time out. The 'over' has connected in five of the past seven meetings in this series.

      Wednesday, Oct. 16

Toronto at Washington: The road team has connected in five of the past seven meetings in this series, so Toronto has that going for them. However, they have won just six of the past 20 in this series. Alex Ovechkin and the Caps just seem to have their number, and the favorite has connected in 20 of the past 28 in this series. They might be catching the Capitals in a good spot, however, as they have dropped four of the past five, including two in regulation and two in overtime. The last time out Washington was doubled up by Colorado on Monday by a 6-3 score. The 'over' is 3-1 in the past four for the Caps.

Buffalo at Anaheim: The Sabres head out to 'The Pond' to battle the Ducks. Buffalo will be looking to snap a four-game skid against Pacific Division foes. Anaheim has been solid when favored, winning four in a row. However, facing the Eastern Conference hasn't been kind to them lately, going 6-15 in the past 21. The road team has won five of the past six meetings in this series, too, while the 'dog has barked in four of the past five meetings. That might mean it's a good idea to fade Anaheim, with Buffalo a solid value on the road.

      Thursday, Oct. 17

N.Y. Rangers at New Jersey: The Devils are looking to avenge a 6-4 loss in Newark against the Panthers, 6-4. They'll face a familiar foe in the Rangers. The Blueshirts won three of the four regular-season meetings in this series last year, although New Jersey won 4-2 in the last meeting on April 1, no foolin'. The home team has won six of the past seven in this series between NYC Metro rivals. The Rangers have been so-so in their three games to date. However, the power play has been clicking, hitting at a 33.3 percent clip to rank fourth during the early going. The penalty kill ranks 13th at 83.3 percent.

Nashville at Arizona: The Predators skate into the desert to face the Coyotes, and Arizona actually won this season series 2-1 in 2018-19. The Preds avoided the season sweep with a 5-2 win in the Music City last Feb. 5, but Arizona won 3-0 in Nashville on Nov. 29 and 2-1 at home on Nov. 15 in the only meeting in the Valley of the Sun. The Coyotes have actually won five of the past six against the Predators in Glendale dating back to the 2014-15 when the Predators swept the three-game season series. Nashville has struggled early on, ranking 25th on the power play at 16.2 percent while going 18th on the penalty kill at 80.8 percent.

                ONE-SIDED RIVALRY

The Winnipeg Jets have shown no mercy on the Arizona Coyotes as they prepare to host the franchise that used to carry their name in a Tuesday night encounter. The Jets (2.0) have won 14 of the previous 18 meetings between the teams since the start of the 2014-15 season, including a 4-2 triumph in their previous showdown on April 7.

The Jets have another trend working in their favor in this one: the home team has prevailed in 10 of the last 13 games between the clubs. The Coyotes enter the week going 4-0 to the Under, having seen just 14 total goals scored in their first four games.

                OVER AND ABOVE

Bettors who took the Over on the period totals between the Colorado Avalanche and Pittsburgh Penguins last season might still be counting their winnings. Two of the most dangerous offensive teams in the league face off Wednesday night in Pennsylvania in the first of two regular-season meetings – and fans and bettors alike can only hope this year's games turn out a lot like last year's.

Each team secured a 6-3 home victory against the other, and five of the six periods in those two games featured three or more goals scored. Live betting the Over on a period goal total could be a worthwhile option in this one.

                LOADING UP

The odds might be the lowest of any player props you'll encounter this week – but it could pay handsomely to consider a trio of Edmonton Oilers skaters for Wednesday's home encounter with the Philadelphia Flyers. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and James Neal should all offer terrible payouts on the points prop, with McDavid and Draisaitl entering the week ranked 1-2 in league scoring and Neal having potted seven goals through the first five games.

With the Flyers playing in Calgary the night before and the Oilers enjoying home-ice advantage, all three are terrific plays on either their goal or point props.

                NARROW VICTORIES

You have to give it to the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers: when they square off, things are tense right up to the final minute of play. The Metropolitan Division (and geographical) rivals renew acquaintances Thursday night at Prudential Center in Newark having split their previous eight meetings overall.

Even more incredibly, six of those seven games were decided by a goal while three went to extra time. There are a couple of different directions bettors can go here; either by taking one team or the other to prevail via a one-goal margin, or to pick Yes on the extra-time prop.

GOALIE PROFILE: JONATHAN QUICK, LOS ANGELES KINGS

Could this be the end of Quick as a competent NHL netminder? It sure looks like it through the early stages of the season, with Quick ranking dead last among qualifies netminders in goals-against average (6.43) and save percentage (.793) entering the week.

Don't be surprised to see a lot more of Jack Campbell, who has won both of his starts while boasting much more respectable – though not exactly elite – statistics (3.48 GAA, .885 SV%) Until one of these guys hits his stride, the Over will continue to be a strong play in Kings games, with Los Angeles coming into the week a perfect 5-0 O/U.

INJURY UPDATE: D NIKLAS HJALMARSSON, ARIZONA COYOTES

We have one more reason to like the Jets in Tuesday night's encounter with the visiting Coyotes. Defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson suffered a cracked fibula last weekend and is expected to be lost for up to three months.

It's a devastating injury for the Coyotes, who have been one of the more defensively sound teams in the NHL – having given up just seven goals through their first four games of the season. But while an injury to a key defenseman might improve that team's Over chances the majority of the time, we still like the Coyotes as an Under play given that they've also scored just seven goals in four games entering the week.

                HAT TRICK TRENDS

                • Home ice wasn't much of an advantage at all last week. Home teams won less than half their games over the previous seven days, converting only 47.7 percent of the time (21-18-5). Things were just as dismal for home favorites, who won outright at a surprisingly low 47.1-percent pace (16-13-5) overall.

                • Over bettors who haven't been deterred by all those 6s and 6.5s have been rewarded handsomely so far, with the Over cashing 40 times compared to the Under at 35 conversions entering the new week. Last week saw 24 games end Over the total, with 19 games coming in below the number; extra-time games were actually 5-6 O/U for the week.

                • Four teams accustomed to being near the bottom of the league standings in recent years have been the best value bets of the season in the early going. The unbeaten Edmonton Oilers lead the way at +4.95 units overall, with the Buffalo Sabres coming into the week at No. 2 (+3.46). Detroit rounds out the top three (+3.37) with Carolina ranked fourth (+3.22).
