    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Odds to win the NBA title this year:

    3-1— Lakers

    4-1— Clippers

    5-1— Bucks

    8-1— Warriors, Rockets, 76ers

    12-1— Jazz

    15-1— Celtics, Nuggets

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

    13) Astros 6, Rays 1— Clock strikes midnight for the Cinderella Rays, who took Houston to the brink in this series, but Astros scored four runs in the first inning and that was that. ALCS will be New York-Houston, which should be very interesting.

    12) Astros’ ace Gerrit Cole had struck out at least one batter in 73 consecutive innings before he didn’t get a strikeout in the third inning last night; not only is that the longest such streak in the majors since 1961, the next highest streak was only 40 (Pedro Martinez, 1999).

    11) Patriots 35, Giants 14— New England scored TD’s on a blocked punt and a fumble return; Giants also scored a TD on a fumble return. Game was 21-14 with 9:00 to play.

Total yardage was 427-213 NE; Giants had 10 first downs, four turnovers (-2).

    10) South Point Casino in Las Vegas has interesting prop bets; what college team scores the first TD of the day, and then which team scores the most points.

    Favorites for first TD:
    7-1: Georgia, Oklahoma, Toledo
    8-1: Indiana, Michigan

Favorite to score the most points Saturday: Louisiana Tech 8-1

    9) Steph Curry scored 40 points in an exhibition game Thursday; Golden State has a much different roster as they open their new arena this fall- no Klay Thompson, Durant is gone, so there will be nights where Curry will have to go off for the Warriors to win.

    8) Villanova/Seton Hall are the favorites to win Big East basketball this winter.

UCLA is picked to finish 8th in the Pac-12, which seems weird to type.

    7) Over last 12 years, unbeaten NFL teams who are an underdog from Week 6 on are 7-6 ATS. 49ers fit that bill Sunday.

    6) Pittsburgh Steelers apparently had a full-contract practice Wednesday, with the team 1-4 and sinking fast; that is unusual in the NFL. Looks like their #3 QB gets his first NFL start against the Chargers Sunday, in a game between two struggling franchises.

    5) Phillies fired manager Gabe Kapler after two mediocre seasons where his players went in the tank on him in September both years. Oddly, the Phillies fired both trainers and their pitching coach, but invited all the other coaches back for next season.

If a new manager doesn’t get to pick his own coaches, that usually signals a bad job.

    4) No idea why, but the last three years, San Jose State’s leading scorer has transferred out of the program all three years, which is why the Spartans are 9-45 in Mountain West games during that time.

Over the last 22 years, San Jose State has never won half its conference games, though they were 17-16 overall in 2010-11. Seems like a school in California should have at least some success.

    3) UL-Monroe 24, Texas State 14— 3-3 WarHawks clinched the win/covered the spread with a TD with 1:46 left; Texas State completed 20-39 passes, but for only 92 yards.

    2) 30 or so years ago, had some problems with my teeth and as a result I gave up Snickers bars, switching to the softer Three Musketeers candy bars.

This week, I had my first Snickers bars since then; they still taste great!!!

    1) One of the best parts of coming to Las Vegas is meeting new people/making new friends, from all over the country. Thursday was a good day/night for that, making new friends from Ohio, New Jersey, Georgia and a few who live here in the desert. Overall, an excellent day.

          RATTLING SABRES

The Buffalo Sabres look every bit like a team ready to end a lengthy playoff drought – and Over bettors are reaping the benefits as the Sabres prepare to host the Florida Panthers on Friday night. Buffalo has won three of four to open the season and has been putting the puck in the net at a furious pace, having scored 18 goals through its first four games; that's a major reason why the Sabres are 3-1 O/U in that span.

With the Panthers having lost two of three to kick off the 2019-20 campaign while allowing 14 goals in those contests, there might be some value in the Buffalo/Over combo play.

          TOO TIRED TO SCORE

It's hard to look at Saturday's encounter between the New Jersey Devils and host Boston Bruins and not wonder if fatigue might come into play on both sides of the ice. The Devils will be playing their third game in four nights in their third different city after facing the Flyers in Philadelphia and hosting the Edmonton Oilers earlier in the week.

Things might be even tougher for the Bruins, who finally play their home opener after kicking off the campaign with road encounters in Dallas, Arizona, Vegas and Colorado. Don't be surprised to see goals come at a premium in this one.

          RUDE VISITORS

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators are on complete opposite ends of the competition spectrum – and there's another trend working in their favor as they trek to the Canadian capital for a Saturday meeting of 1992 expansion cousins. Not only have the Lightning won two straight and three of the past four meetings between the teams, the visitor has gone 5-1 SU in the past six head-to-head encounters dating back to February 2018.

Not only that, but these teams have combined to score seven or more goals in seven of their last eight tilts – so the Tampa/Over result and total is very much in play here.

          SPEAKING OF GOALS

The Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks don't waste any time getting on the scoresheet when they face off against each other. The Pacific Division rivals renew hostilities Sunday night having combined for an incredible 28 goals in their previous three regular-season meetings.

In particular, the first period has been a goal-fest of absurd proportions, with the teams scoring a combined 12 goals in the opening 20 minutes of those three contests. And that's no fluke; the teams have combined for three or more first-period goals in five of their last seven encounters overall, so consider the Over on the first-period total.

GOALIE PROFILE: CARTER HART, PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

Might the Flyers finally have their franchise goaltender after decades of frustration and futility? That's certainly the hope, as Hart has Philadelphia off to a great start (entering Thursday night) with wins in each of his first two games to start the season.

Even more impressively, the 21-year-old has posted a sparkling 1.50 goals-against average to go along with a .946 save percentage and a shutout of the New Jersey Devils. The Flyers have given him plenty of offense so far – scoring eight times in their first two games – but if he continues to play this well, he won't need it.

INJURY UPDATE: D JOSH MORRISSEY, WINNIPEG JETS

The Jets hope to have Morrissey back in the lineup soon after he was a late scratch for Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Morrissey suffered an upper-body injury during warm-ups Sunday night, and was given the green light to return in Pittsburgh but didn't feel ready.

he Jets ultimately didn't need him – they pulled out a 4-1 win over the Penguins – but a longer absence could make things difficult for the Winnipeg defense corps. And that could make the Jets an even stronger Over play moving forward, especially with the high-flying Penguins heading to Manitoba for a Sunday rematch.

          HAT TRICK TRENDS

          • A flurry of goals have made the Over the prevailing trend through the opening week of the NHL season. Overs have converted 25 times compared to just 20 Unders – and extra-time games have been the biggest catalyst, as you might expect, with overtime and shootout games going a red-hot 8-2 O/U.

          • While it isn't all that surprising that road favorites are winning at a decent clip, the more shocking thing might be that there haven't been that many away faves at all. A whopping 37 of the 46 games played through Wednesday night have seen the home team favored; those teams are converting at a 62.2 percent clip, with road faves coming in at 66.7 percent.
